        Goldfinger (a James Bond novel).

London: Jonathan Cape, 1959.. FIRST EDITION. Publisher's black cloth with gilt-stamped 'skull'. Pictorial dust-wrapper by Richard Chopping. A lightly used copy which shows extremely well, with a little dustiness/spotting to top edge, no inscriptions or price-clipping, jacket with a few chips and tears now expertly restored. The seventh of author Ian Fleming's fourteen original Bond books which was was adapted as the third film (1964) in the EON Productions' 007 series and was the third to star Sean Connery as British Secret Service agent, Commander James Bond. To say it was successful is a little wide of the mark; it changed popular culture, being the first film to really capitalise on merchandising, and distracting a whole generation with glamourous espionage and international mystery as opposed to the bleak reality of the Cold War. Thunderbirds, The Avengers, U.N.C.L.E., Mission Impossible, Danger Man, Jason King, The Prisoner, The Persuaders et al, all begin here. Goldfinger was also the blueprint for the Bond movie franchise the next two decades; the plot, the sets, the villains and henchmen, the cars, the girls and the gadgets were all over the top, as was the budget- but nothing compared to the collosal box office returns!

        Lyrics on several occasions.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf,, 1959. A selection of stage & screen lyrics written for sundry situations; and now arranged in arbitrary categories. To which have been added many informative annotations & disquisitions on their why & wherefore, their whom-for, their how; and matters associative. Octavo. Original brown cloth backed boards, green cloth sides, titles and decoration gilt to spine and front, top edge dyed red. With the dust jacket. A really excellent copy with the dust jacket a little spine-tanned and a trifle rubbed at the corners. First edition, first printing, presentation copy inscribed on the front free endpaper, "For Louis Aborn - with all best - From Ira Gershwin". Louis H. Aborn (1912-2005) was the President from 1956 of Tams-Whitmark Music Library, the largest collection of printed and manuscript music then in existence. During Aborn's presidency Tams-Whitmark acquired rights in many of the most popular American musical stage plays and made those musicals available for presentation by schools, community theatres, and professional theatres throughout the world. He was also instrumental in developing a number of works for the musical stage including The Wizard of Oz, Meet me in St Louis, and Calamity Jane. He had close relationships to many of the great Broadway composers and writers of the 20th century, and his own presentation copy of Gershwin's lyrical anthology makes for a great association.

Possibly with a blank sheet of paper enclosed, by way of explanation," (p 107]. Dark gray cloth with gold on spine having minimal fading [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Arabian Sands

London: Longmans, Green and Co, 1959. First edition of the author's masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Wilfred Thesiger on the title page, with a contemporary signature. An excellent example in a near fine dust jacket with some rubbing to the extremities. Map unopened in the inside pocket of the rear pastedown. Though educated at Eton and Oxford, Wilfred Thesiger was repulsed by the softness and rigidity of Western life-"the machines, the calling cards, the meticulously aligned streets." In the spirit of T. E. Lawrence, he set out to explore the deserts of Arabia, traveling among peoples who had never seen a European and considered it their duty to kill Christian infidels. His now-classic account is invaluable to understanding the modern Middle East. "Following worthily in the tradition of Burton, Lawrence, Philby and Thomas, [Arabian Sands] is, very likely, the book about Arabia to end all books about Arabia" (The Daily Telegraph, London).

        Milano, Italia

Lerici, 1959. Prima e unica edizione. Direzione grafica di Giulio Confalonieri e Ilio Negri, schema di impaginazione di Giuseppe Trevisani. "At the time he made Milano Carrieri was associated with the italian neo-realist photographers, such as Cesare Columbo and Mario di Biasi, before he went on to become a distinguished photographer of sculpture. He made books of other cities, but none this extreme. Its concentration on the seamier side of life makes Milano one of the most important works of the neorealist tendency of the 1950s" (Parr / Badger). "Volevo produrre una città non riprodurla. Niente "battute fotografiche". Niente formalismo. Niente inchieste. Solo scelta di un linguaggio e di un racconto che stiano al di là della realtà oggettiva: e vengano proposte da una particolare regia, in immagini meno lente possibili. All'origine una sorta di rabbia nei confronti di ciò che è scontato. Il mito della metropoli. Rabbia di fronte alle parvenze e rabbia anche per ciò che già sapevo sulle "tecniche di ripresa" (dal risvolto di sovraccoperta). Parr / Badger, The Photobook: A History, I, p. 214. Italiano

        Ronald Knox.

1959 - First edition. Large 8vo., original blue cloth, dust jacket. London, Chapman & Hall. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: ?For Fr. Martin D'Arcy S.J., with deep affection from Evelyn Waugh, 8th October 1959? The inter-war years saw an extraordinary boom in the numbers of Catholic converts, and D'Arcy ?an unashamed tuft-hunter . [who] . faithfully followed the Jesuit tradition established in England of concentrating on the upper echelons of society, on the well-tried principle of the bigger the stone the bigger the ripple.? (Hastings), received Waugh into the Church in 1930: his ?fine, slippery mind? (Waugh), was the perfect foil for Waugh's doubts and certainties, and Waugh was to depend on his faith profoundly: Nancy Mitford once asked Waugh how he reconciled 'being so horrible with being a Christian. He replied rather sadly that were he not a Christian he would be even more horrible . & anyway would have committed suicide years ago'? (Hastings). D'Arcy ?so far from Ronald in mind, so near him in friendship? (Waugh) preached at his funeral in 1957. A near fine copy in dust jacket, preserved in a quarter leather Solander box.
