Autograph letter card signed and autogr. poem signed. N. p., 23. X. 1959.

1959. Oblong 8vo. 2 pp. Poem: Small 4to. 1 p. 11 lines. To Viveka Heyman, in German: "A few days ago Prof. Valentin called me requesting information, and in the course of the conversation I learned that you had published a review of 'Flucht und Verwechslung' in the June/July issue. I had not received that issue. It was sent to me since, and I was blessed with the great happiness of finding myself so deeply, so uncommonly understood. Dear Viveka Heymann, where on earth may one feel safe and at home but there where two humans encounter each other at the utmost peak of experience [...]". - The 11-line pencilled poem, dedicated to Heyman, is taken "from the cycle, 'Still Death Does Celebrate Life'": as Nelly Sachs has noted in ballpoint at the upper edge, it was "written at the moment of greatest despair in Beckomberga Hospital".

"La Vraie Histoire du Jazz" - Autograph Book Manuscript

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Autograph manuscript of the influential French critic, historian, and record producer's book Histoire du vrai jazz (Robert Laffont, 1959), under its previous title of La Vraie Histoire du Jazz. Approx. 620 pp., of which 12 are typewritten with corrections, in 16 heavy paper folders, inside a very handsome custom archival box designed to resemble a parcel bound with string. 9 x 4 x 11.5 inches (23 x 10 x 29 cm). One dent and light shelf wear to the box; some light toning and foxing to the manuscript leaves; overall in fine condition.
Panassié traces the evolution of jazz, from its origins in New Orleans to the 1950's. A short introduction explains (translated from the French): "Why 'true'? Because so many articles and books have been written confusing authentic jazz with false jazz, and relating the history of jazz so inexactly, that it is important to get things straight. This book is not about the history of what too many badly-informed people believe to be jazz, which has only the most superficial connection to the music, but rather the history of true jazz, the music of black Americans. [...] Jazz is the musical language of another race. We others, whites, can understand it, even speak it, provided that we take pains to learn it, to assimilate ourselves. It was through contact with black people that I learned what real jazz is. My conception of jazz is theirs..." Throughout the manuscript, corrections and changes have been made to the text, frequently including alternate titles for the chapters. The first page shows several possible variations on the book's title: "Histoire du vrai jazz," "La veritable histoire du jazz," and "La vraie histoire du jazz." Each chapter's folder includes a small covering leaf in another hand, summarizing the chapter.
The work comprises the following chapters: I. Les Origines du Jazz; II. Naissance du jazz à la Nouvelle-Orléans; III. Où l'on voit le jazz grandir [several other possible titles struck through]; IV. Chicago; V. Louis Armstrong; VI. Harlem; VII.
An important manuscript from the the founding president of the Hot Club de France (1932), the man almost solely responsible for bringing jazz to France. In a changing world of jazz, Panassié was an ardent exponent of traditional jazz â?? strictly Dixieland â?? and famously dismissed bebop as "a form of music distinct from jazz." He harbored a particular love of style similar to that of Louis Armstrong from the 1930s and criticized West Coast jazz as inauthentic, partly because most musicians were white and also "sounded white." Despite his traditionalist views on the art form, his influence on the reception of jazz in France, and in shaping the cross-cultural dialogue between American and French musicians, cannot be overstated.

Ekonomicheskii raschet nailuchshego ispolzovaniia resursov [The Best Uses of Economic Resources]

First edition. Limited to 3.000 copies.Translated in English in 1965.L. Kantorovich (1912-1986) – prominent Russian mathematician and economist. He shared Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel with T. Koopmans in 1975 "for their contributions to the theory of optimum allocation of resources". In this work, L. Kantorovich developed his method of linear programming he first made public in 1939. L. Kantorovich started as great mathematician but interested in economics since 1939. He worked a lot and wrote a lot through wartime for economics. Amongst other works, he wrote this book in 1942.Kantorovich’s conclusions made about the role of prices in planned economy were very dangerous for his further academic career and possibly life in Stalin era. So he returned to study math after WWII was finished. Then he worked in Soviet nuclear project. After Stalin’s death, the role of economy in Russia was recognized more important than earlier. In 1958 Kantorovich founded first faculty for mathematical economics in Russia and in 1959 he published this work for the first time. It is just for this work L. Kantorovich became Nobel laureate.

Photograph signed ("C. G. Jung") and inscribed "Arcana publicata vilescunt". N. p., [1959].

1959. 225 x 185 mm. Framed and glazed. Showing him in conversation with Hugh Burnett, the plinth of a bust showing behind him, at a tea-table. - The haunting phrase "Arcana Publicata Vilescunt", which may roughly be translated as "secret knowledge when published is made profane", is to be found on the title-page of the first edition of the "Chemical Wedding" of Christian Rosenkreutz (1616), an alchemical allegory by the early Rosicrucian and later Silesian father, Johann Valentin Andreae, and edited by the aptly-named Johann Friedrich Jung. The teasing inscription on this photograph refers to the fact that it was Hugh Burnett's programme, "Face to Face", that brought Jung into contact with a mass audience for the first time. One of the viewers of the programme, Wolfgang Foges, contacted Burnett's interviewer, John Freeman, and asked him to contact Jung to sound him out about the possibility of writing a book explaining his views for the intelligent general reader rather than the specialist. Freeman conducted two interviews to this end with Jung, but was met with a firm but polite refusal. Jung then had a dream in which he was speaking in a public forum to 'a multitude of people who were listening to him with wrapt attention and understanding what he said'. When asked by Foges if he would reconsider, Jung agreed, on the condition that it consisted not just of his own writings but included essays by his closest followers, and was to be edited by Freeman. The result, which was to appear after Jung's death, was "Man and His Symbols", 1964 (cf. Deirdre Bair, Jung: A Biography [2004], pp. 619-620).

        Autograph letter signed. Paris, 20. I. 1959.

[...]". - On headed paper "Telegram"; small damage to edges, and slightly dust-soiled.

"Emmanuel Chabrier". Autograph manuscript, signed twice. N. p., 1959.

1959. Title page, 23 numbered pp. on 23 ff; half-title, pp. 24-78 on 55 ff. Blue ink on one-sided checked paper; proof reader's corrections in pencil. Spiral-bound cardboard wrappers, inscribed "Francis Poulenc I - Chabrier". Small 4to. One of only a few literary manuscripts by the eminent French composer, extremely rare in trade. In this paper, which appeared in 1961 at La Palatine publishers, Paris-Genève, Poulenc compresses, as he writes in the preface, "une véritable passion" that he felt from adolescence onwards for Chabrier's music, into a memorial full of warmth, enthusiasm, and linguistic beauty. - The present ms. comprises the preface, the introduction "Portrait de Chabrier", and Chapters I and II (cf. pp. 1-78 in the printed version); Chapters III and IV (in the book pp. 80-119) might have filled another, clearly thinner quarto issue, the whereabouts of which are unknown today and are not established by MGG or New Grove.

        'The Birthday Party' SIGNED

An exceptionally rare first edition of Pinter's second full-length play, published in limited numbers by Encore Publishing in 1959. This edition is signed on the title page by the author, with a personal dedication to the actress Margery Withers - the second actress to play the part of 'Meg' (and the first to do so on television). - - - - - - - - - - The Birthday Party was first staged in the spring of 1958 at the Arts Theatre in Cambridge, before playing in Oxford and Wolverhampton. It opened in London, at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, in May 1958 and infamously closed after only eight performances. It's failure is said to have caused Pinter to consider ending his ambition to be a playwright but subsequent revivals have cemented it's status as a classic. In 1959 the play received it's first such re-evalution when it was performed by the Tavistock Repertory Company at the Tower Theatre in Islington, London. This production provides the cover photograph of Encore's first edition. Pinter, who lived locally, saw the production and attended some rehearsals (although he was not directly involved in the production). The company, run by non-professionals, were the first to stage the play after it's 1958 opening. [Tower Theatre archive:] This copy of the book belonged to Margery Withers, the actress who played 'Meg' in the Tavistock Rep Company production. It is personally signed by Pinter with the following message: "To Margery, I shall always remember your wonderful performance as Meg. You were the one and only belle of the ball. Love Harold." It is dated, by Pinter, 'Dec. 59'. The quote 'the one and only belle of the ball' is taken directly from the play itself. - - - - - - - - - - In 1960 Margery was offered to reprise the role in the world's first television production of the play. At the time she was working at the BBC and could not get permission to appear in the ITV drama - emboldened and encouraged by Pinter she quit her job to become an actress full-time. She made her professional debut in the ITV television version of this play and subsequently appeared in numerous British television series and films over the next 40 years, including parts in Coronation Street, Z Cars, The Bill, Casualty and Mike Leigh's Secrets and Lies. She died in 1999. Harold Pinter went on to become one of Britain's most celebrated playwrights, screenwriters, actors, poets and theatre directors. In 2005 he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. He died in 2008. Condition: This was Margery's personal copy and has suffered a little wear to the edges. The front page with the signature has been secured to the front cover with sellotape at some point. This doesn't impinge on the signature and with a bit of careful restoration a better job could be made of this. There's also a small corner of the title page missing, but otherwise the book is complete with no other lose pages and no major defects. The binding now is tight. Pinter signatures from the 1950s are also incredibly rare. This is a first edition of Pinter's first published play, signed and dated by the author with a personal message to his leading lady.

The Birthday Party (Signed By The Author)

The First UK Printing published by Encore Publishing Co.Ltd. in 1959.This edition was published solely as a wraps edition. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition.A little creasing along the spine and a small crease at the upper front cover adjacent to the spine. The book remains tight and is free from erasures, inscriptions and markings. The book has been simply Signed without dedication on the title page by Harold Pinter. The Birthday Party was first staged in the spring of 1958 at the Arts Theatre in Cambridge, before playing in Oxford and Wolverhampton. A rare first edition of Pinter's second full-length play (Having only been preceded by a student production play in 1957), published in limited numbers by Encore Publishing in 1959. Pinter went on to become one of the 20th century's greatest playwrights and was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 2005. An exceptionally scarce title to find signed by the Nobel Laureate.
