        A Visit To Morin.

London: Heinemann,, 1959. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine gilt, green silk page marker. Spine slightly sunned, corners a touch bumped. An excellent copy. First edition, only impression, one of 250 copies only. Presentation copy, inscribed by Greene on the front free endpaper: "For Yvonne & Jacques Cloetta with every good wish for Christmas 1960, from Graham Greene." Yvonne Cloetta (1923?2001), whom Greene first met in 1959, would become one of the author's closest companion for the last thirty years of his life. Greene "moved to Antibes in the 1960s partly because he wanted to be near her home in Juan les Pins. Though she never left her husband, Jacques, she was almost always at Greene's side when he was in Antibes, and would usually spend holidays with him on Capri. He had a comfortable life with Mme Cloetta, who made few demands on him, and he was reasonably content in Antibes, where the local people left him alone and the authorities treated him with respect? [When] Greene finally left France in 1990 [he] spent the last year of his life at the village of Corseaux, outside Vevey, Switzerland, sharing an apartment with Mme Cloetta" (ODNB).

        Wild Raspberries

New York: Self-published (Printed by Seymour Berlin), 1959. Hardcover. Very Good. One of the 6 extraordinary artist's books which a young Andy Warhol created and self-published in the 1950s. This, "Wild Raspberries", was the last, the largest --and the most exuberant-- of the six. LESS THAN 100 COPIES WERE MADE AND THIS COPY IS INSCRIBED BY WARHOL IN A LARGE HAND IN PENCIL: "to Bobby and Susumu. Andy Warhol". (Susumu Ikata was a Japanese-American potter and ceramicist and a friend whose portrait Warhol painted circa 1960. Bobby is unknown). The folio consists of 19 offset lithographed plates (including title) of images by Andy Warhol and recipes in calligraphic lettering by Warhol's mother Julia Warhola. One of the plates is double-page, one handcolored. 7 raspberry-colored tissue-guards; minor stain on title. Original raspberry-colored boards; spine worn, boards faded and stained as usual. The coloring on the first illustration, "Salade de Alf Landon", may have been done by Susumu Ikata himself. The number of plates colored in each copy varies widely. "Apparently part of the edition was completely hand-colored, but most of the copies were hand-colored only in part, for the most part on the first pages" (from "Reading Warhol"). The book was exhibited at the Bodley Gallery in New York during Christmas, 1959 and was enthusiastically reviewed. The title is a coy reference to Ingmar Bergman's 1957 film "Wild Strawberries", which had just begun to show in New York in the summer of 1959. Warhol and Suzie Frankfurt (who concocted the outlandish recipes) tried to sell the book thru Bloomingdale's but sales were very flat. Now, all these years later, the book is a prized rarity, a highspot in 20th century artist's books and one of the most valuable "cookbooks" of the last 100+ years. (References: "Manet to Hockney", pg. 130, "Reading Warhol", pp. 118-124, 294).

New York: The Viking Press, 1959., 1959. First edition. First edition. Fine, bright copy in a fine bright dust jacket with a hint of wear to the head of spine. Dr. Montague, a scientific investigator of ghostly phenomena, has chosen to live for several weeks at Hill House, by repute a place of horror that will brook no human habitation. He selects three companions previously unknown to him. The two girls, Eleanor and Theo, are chosen because each has had a minor, accidental brush with the supernatural. The young man, Luke, is the heir to Hill House and more than anxious to participate in the program. This book is the basis for several films, most notably "The Haunting" (1963) directed by Robert Wise and starred Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, and Richard Johnson. Stephen King says that the book is one of the greatest horror books of all time. An exceptional copy.
