? Kassette etwas fleckig und bestoßen.         North by Northwest (Original screenplay for the 1959 film)

Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM] / Loew's, 1958. Revised Shooting script for the 1959 film. Studio Vault copy, rubber-stamped on the front wrapper. Brief notations in holograph pencil throughout, and in ink and pencil on the front wrapper. Pre-production and production scripts of any Hitchcock film are rare, presumably because the director was known for having gone to extremes in order to preserve the mystery of their content--particularly those with surprise endings. Screenwriter Lehman's "Hitchcock picture to end all Hitchcock pictures," with a score by Bernard Herrmann and innovative title sequence by Saul Bass, featuring kinetic typography superimposed onto the side of a U.N. skyscraper, the film represents a change of pace for the director after his earlier film, "Vertigo" (1958), a dark, romantic thriller. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards, and ranks as one of AFI's ten best mystery films, even with Hitchcock's Freudian symbolism: a train speeding into a tunnel during a romantic scene, a scene the director himself called "one of the most impudent shots I ever made." A Hitchcock high spot, the last of four films the director made with Grant, the others being "To Catch a Thief" (1955), "Notorious" (1946), and "Suspicion" (1941). Set in New York, shot on location in California, Illinois, and South Dakota (Mount Rushmore). Blue studio wrappers, rubber-stamped copy No. 159, dated 8/12/58, with credits for producer Hitchcock and screenwriter Lehman. Title page integral with front wrapper. 180 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 179. Mimeograph, dated variously between 7/13/58 and 8/26/58, with pink revision pages throughout, dated variously between 8/22/58 and 10/27/58. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good, bound with two gold brads. National Film Registry. Grant, p. 468.

        Eloise at Christmastime.

New York: Random House, 1958. First edition of the third book in the wonderfully illustrated Eloise series. Slim folio, original pictorial red boards. Signed by the illustrator, Hilary Knight. Fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. A very nice example. Eloise has always had a rather festive air about her, but when Christmastime rolls around, well, it's "Fa la la la fa la la la lolly ting tingledy here and there," of course. The bunchy-bloused, spindly-legged scamp is speaking in rhyme this time, and in typical Eloise fashion, the verse simply can't be perfectly metered, for what would be the point? She rushes around New York's Plaza Hotel on Christmas Eve, jingling, spreading Christmas cheer, tying tassels on the thermostats, and writing "Merry Christmas" on all the walls.

Ink on paper. .......della terra. Signed and dated 1958 Framed and glazed.

Naples: Self-published., 1958. First edition. Paperback. Very Good. Ink and gouache on paper.Titled, signed and dated 1958 by the artist. In contemporary gilt frame, 810x610mm, sheet withoiut margin 690x490. Un-examined out of frame. In very good condition. Born in Naples in 1933, Guido Biasi studied at the Artistic High School and at the College of Fine Arts in his hometown. In 1954 he became a member of Movimento di Pittura Nucleare (Nuclear Painting Movement) and in 1957 he signed the Abisola Marina Manifesto with Colucci, Piero Manzoni, Sordini and Verga. The following year he took part in the establishment of "Gruppo 58" - with Luca (Luigi Castellano), Del Pezzo, Di Bello and Fergola. He wrote down the manifesto of the group. From 1959 on, he worked for the reviews "Documento sud" and "Linea sud". In 1960, he was in New York where he took part in the International Exhibition of Surrealism; "Surrealist Intrusion in the Enchanters' Domain", by André Breton and Marcel Duchamp. In the same year he moved to Paris where he remained. In the early years of his Paris life he attended the group "Phases"; he worked for the Homonymous review, and also for the review "Edda", published in Brussels. From 1968 onwards he would often go back to Milan, even for long stays. He dies in Paris in 1983. The list of his one-man exhibitions shows the great interest that galleries all over Europe had in his works since the early 1960s. He was in Basle, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Cologne, London, Paris. In 1964 he was in New York and again in Brussels, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Grenoble, Malmoe, Bourges, Château roux, etc. In Italy we remember his presence at the Biennale di Venezia (1972 and 1978), Quadriennale di Roma (1972). Very important was his presence at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (1969), at the invitation to the Biennale Internazionale in Sao Paulo, Brasil (1972) and the XXV Salone della Giovane Pittura di Parigi (1974). Some of the most qualified scholars have written about him in Italy. Among them: Barilli, Caramel, Crispol-ti, Fagone, Menna, Sanguineti, Schwarz and Varga.

Mon Oncle (Original French Film Program)

Gaumont, 1958. Original French program for the 1958 Jacques Tati film, "Mon Oncle," the director's second of four films featuring the inimitable "Monsieur Hulot." In this chapter, Hulot strays from his rather ordinary Paris neighborhood and into a modern, suburban one, where technological chaos reigns. A delightfully designed program, with four 5.5 x 4.25 inch color stills from the film tipped in amongst the text and line illustrations. Tall card wrappers in with a modernist die-cut at the bottom of the front panel that reveals the film's title, saddle-stitched, 8-pages, with a laid-in card reporting early reviews from the French press. 12 x 9.5 inches. Fine condition. A unique piece from the third of Tati's five masterpieces. Criterion Collection 111.

From the Terrace (First Edition, with TLS laid in)

New York: Random House, 1958. First Edition. First Edition. Laid in is a typed letter signed by O'Hara, addressed to "Bill and Frank," on stationery from Long Island, NY. The letter is dated June 20, 1960 (in pencil), and in it O'Hara expresses his dislike of the public remarks made by Mark Robson, the director of the 1960 film, though Robson's name is not mentioned. It seems Robson "sounded off" in the Long Island Tribune (June 19, 1960), and O'Hara took offense, and was soon "in touch with the studio to see what can be done about shutting him [Robson] up." O'Hara also invites the addressees to a private screening of the film. Very Good plus or better in a Very Good plus or better dust jacket. Spine ends lightly bumped, a few leaves with tiny corner creases, and lightly rubbing overall. A small chip at the jacket rear flap fold, and light rubbing overall, else Near Fine. Letter Near Fine. Jacket design by Philip Grushkin. An attractive copy with an interesting letter connecting the novel to the film.

Through The Years With Hef and Bunny (Small Archive of TLS From Hugh Hefner to Bunny Yeager)

Chicago, 1958. First edition. A small (3 item) archive of correspondence between Hugh Hefner and Bunny Yeager. (1.) Two page Typed Letter Signed, dated April 18, 1958, from Hugh Hefner to Bunny Yeager, on the old Playboy letterhead. Very good; some slight soiling, foxing. An interesting, behind the scenes glimpse at Hef as editor, planning photo shoots with his "favorite Playmate photographer" and giving some particularly detailed instructions for one photograph, from which it can be deduced Hefner knew what he wanted in Playmate photographs because of some previous consideration, to put it politely. Signed as "Hef" at the close. (2.) One page TLS, dated August 21 1958 on the updated Playboy letterhead. Hefner dispatches in brisk fashion several of Bunny?'s suggested contributions. Very good; light, scattered foxing, folded for mailing, else fine. Signed as ?"Hef?" at the close. (3.) One page TLS, dated August 30, 1994, on Hefner?'s personal letterhead, politely declining a submission from Bunny, but mentioning again one of Bunny?'s models, whom he mentions in the letter dated April 18, 1958. Very good or better; folded for mailing, else fine. Signed "Love, Hef" at the close. It seems that contributions from, and the importance of the great Bunny Yeager in the early days of Playboy magazine is overlooked and/or forgotten. A review of the early issues, however, shows she made a substantial impact as far as establishing the look and the brand of the Playmate. Then too, correspondence from Hefner does not seem to be particularly common in the marketplace, even as there must be a considerable amount of it somewhere; and correspondence in which Hefner reveals his thoughts on how to pose a particular Playmate is even less common.
