John Masefield Collection of ephemera (signed), books and photo, including signed carbon copy of "August 1914" poem

1958. . John Masefield Collection of ephemera include;• Signed mimeo or carbon copy typescript  (ND circa 1914 presumed] of Masefield's famous WWI historic and only war poem entitled "August, 1914". It was the first poem to see print after war was declared. It's a powerful, long and moving poem that connects seamlessly between the beauty of life in the Berkshire landscape and the sadness and tragedy of life in the trenches. The following is quoted from Wikisource John Masefield's Place In English Poetry;"One can think of no other poet since Chaucer so purely English in derivation and in spirit. His intense nationalism has no doubt contributed to the marking down of his talents in some critical quarters, for nationalism nowadays receives a cold scrutiny. Masefield's is of the kind that will not be stared down. Its basis is spiritual, in. . . the heartfelt things past-speaking dearTo unknown generations of dead men.Out of that nationalism of his came the noblest utterance in poetry that the War brought forth. If Masefield had written nothing else besides "August, 1914," his name would be remembered among the English poets. No blustering patriot, no facile glorifier of war, wrote those lines. If men died for love of England they also . . . died (uncouthly, most) in foreign landsFor some idea but dimly understoodOf an English city never built by handsWhich love of England prompted and made good. The mood in which Masefield watched the approach of war, as it is here recorded, is not the eager consecration to which young men like Rupert Brooke gave expression. Masefield's poem has lost nothing of its poignancy in the aftermath of disillusion, because it was written from an embracing vision. It does not ennoble war; it merely perceives it as the agency through which men reach down intoThe depths and sunken gold of being alive." • Issue of Harper's Weekly (12 September 1914) with the "August, 1914"poem. First American publication probably after the September 1 issue of The English Review.• Book with signed drawing of Masefield, 5 June 1931, matching the frontispiece sketch) and American ed. of (New York: Macmillan, 1914), both in very good condition in slightly chipped jackets, with the poem; • Book; English ed. of Philip the King and Other Poems (London: William Heinemann, 1914); • ALS to Mr. Cross, n.d., stating that he hopes to be at the Library on Wednesday and will have to leave after the reading.• ALS to Mrs. or Miss Packard, thanking her for the ticket and hoping to meet her when he comes to the Club (with news clipping of Masefield's poem on Queen Elizabeth's marriage). • TLS to Hilda E. Woodruff, 28 March 1929, in appreciation that his poems have been read by her class of students. • TLS with envelope, post-marked 19 May 1939, to John Chester Adams, Professor of English at Yale University, stating that he is "sending off a book to Mr. Wilcox, with a letter about the poem which you sent to me with your letter of the 2nd of May." • TLS to Mr. Blayney, n.d., thanking him for his letter and the setting of music ("Alas, I am not musical, and must send this back unheard.") and advising him to apply to the Society of Authors. • B&W photo of Masefield looking at a book and standing by a book shelf ("At Home with Poet Laureate in His Eighteeth Year"), Keystone Press Agency, [1958]. Books and documents housed in a light green cloth pictorial clamshell box.John Masefield (1878-1967). Laureate 1930-67. Born in Ledbury, Herefordshire, England, Masefield apprenticed to be a merchant marine officer. While training, he became ill in Chile, returned to England, then worked in factories and bars in the United States. In 1897 he returned to England, working on newspapers and his own writing (poems, stories, and plays). Masefield published his first volume of poems in 1902. He served during World War I in the Red Cross in France and on a hospital ship at Gallipoli. His simple and moving poems include the famous "August 1914"This collection is on consignment with LDRB.

        Lolita

Paris: Olympia Press. Very Good. FIRST EDITION of one of the most important novels of the twentieth century. WITH IMPORTANT PROVENANCE: From the Bureau Littéraire Clairouin, Nabokov's literary agency who was instrumental in its publication. "Vladimir Nabokov is an artist of the first rank, a writer in the great tradition ... [and] Lolita is probably the best fiction to come out of this country (so to speak) since Faulkner's burst in the thirties. He may be the most important writer now going in this country. He is already, God help him, a classic" (Critic Conrad Brenner, in 1958).Controversial since its conception, Lolita was rejected by American publishing houses until finally accepted by the avant-garde Olympia Press in Paris and published in a fragile two-volume format.First issue, with 900 Francs on rear wrappers and no evidence of later price sticker.WITH IMPORTANT PROVENANCE: with stamp of the Bureau Littéraire Clairouin, Nabokov's literary agency, on front free endpaper of each volume.Nabokov on the Bureau Littéraire Clairouin and the publication of Lolita:"Lolita was finished at the beginning of 1954, in Ithaca, New York. My first attempts to have it published in the US proved disheartening and irritating. On August 6 of that year, from Taos, New Mexico, I wrote to Madame Ergaz, of the Bureau Littéraire Clairouin, Paris, about my troubles. She had arranged the publication in French of some of my Russian and English books; I now asked her to find somebody in Europe who would publish Lolita in the original English. She replied that she thought she could arrange it. A month later, however, upon my return to Ithaca (where I taught Russian Literature at Cornell) I wrote to her saying I had changed my mind. New hopes had arisen for publication in America. They petered out, and next spring I got in touch with Madame Ergaz again, writing her (Feb. 16) that Sylvia Beach 'might perhaps be interested if she still publishes.' This was not followed up. By April 17 Madame Ergaz had received my transcript. On April 26, 1955, a fatidic date, she said she had found a possible publisher. On May 13 she named that person. It was thus that Maurice Girodias, [founder of The Olympia Press], entered my files…" (Nabokov in Strong Opinions).Paris: Olympia Press, 1955. Octavo, original green paper wrappers; custom box. Two volumes. A little edgewear and a few spots of soiling, usual spine creases. An excellent copy with an important provenance of the rare first issue.

        Autograph Quotation Signed.

      - This legendary R & B tenor hit the charts in the mid-50s with the Drifters and such hits as "Money Honey," "Such a Night" and "Honey Love" before going solo. AQS, 1p, irregularly-trimmed (roughly rectangular) 8" X 4½", n.p., n.d. [January 1958]. Very good. Yellowed tape stain at each corner and two more small tape stains along right edge, touching slightly upon a couple of words. Curious free verse poem or song lyrics -- whether to one of McPhatter's published songs is uncertain. "I want to walk in the shadow of your arms," it begins. "I want to live by the touch of your lips. I want to be in the River with you, while the sea's calm, I want to live and love I don't want to miss. I want to live with a love that's divine, I want to be with you and give you all my love. I want to say that you are mine. I want to ask faith from the one above." Boldly signed at the conclusion. An unheard-of McPhatter rarity, quite intriguing and exceedingly scarce -- and worthy of further research. The alcoholic McPhatter died of a heart attack at age 39, making his autograph material quite uncommon. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

LES AMERICANS: PHOTOGRAPHIES DE ROBERT FRANK

(FRANK, ROBERT). Frank, Robert & Alain Bosquet. LES AMERICANS: PHOTOGRAPHIES DE ROBERT FRANK. Paris: Robert Delpire, Editeur, 1958. First Edition. Oblong 8vo. Illustrated Boards. Photography Monograph. Very Good -/No Jacket - As Issued. 174pp, 83 b&w illustrations. Text in French. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "The Americans" is the iconic book that established transplanted Swiss photographer/filmmaker Robert Frank's reputation as one of the great socially conscious post-war essayists. Frank's images reveal America as an emerging cold war superpower wrestling with its past as it hurtles toward a decade of tumultuous change. This French edition - "Les Americains" - was published under the supervision of Robert Delpire the year before the American Grove Press, Inc. version, and is the first appearance of Frank's landmark classic in book form. It features a cover illustration by Saul Steinberg, and a lengthy text by poet Alain Bosquet in place of Jack Kerouac's later jaunty contribution. An internally bright, handsome example of the uncommon true first edition (cited on page 39 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II", pages 332-333 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", and pages 252-253 of "The Book of 101 Books") showing overall very light wear and handling to the glazed boards, a bit of trivial soiling on bottom edge of the textblock, and age-toning along the spine. Additionally, there is some starting of the top front hinge and laminate of the front cover with a tiny spot of fraying alongside at the head of the spine. All in all this is an unusually nice copy of a significant book that has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. Very Good with no dust jacket as issued. Slight lean, with light foxing to the page edges and endpapers, and some faint dampstaining to the page edges; interior pages and photographs unaffected. Roth 101, pp. 150-151. Parr & Badger Vol. 1, p. 247.

Guerillaführer, Arzt. Autor und Ikone der Kubanischen Revolution (1928-1967): Eigenh. Brief mit U. (A.L.S.).

Ohne Ort, 26. Piano-vocal score of the opera. Autograph musical manuscript signed in full and dated on the last page of music "Paris, 1958"

      - Sabbataï Zevi is the fourth of Tansman's seven operas. The opera received a concert performance on March 3, 1961, at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, but has apparently never been staged. Max Eschig, Paris, published a piano-vocal score in 1966. The choral score accompanying the present autograph was most probably created for the 1961 production of the opera. The composer considered Sabbataï Zevi the best of his operas. Like many of Tansman's later works it is based on a distinctly Jewish subject. ". Tansman was a French composer and pianist of Polish birth. Disappointed with his reception in Poland, he moved to Paris, giving a début recital in February 1920. Soon after his arrival, he became friendly with Stravinsky and Ravel, both of whom encouraged and advised him. Acquainted with many leading musical figures in Paris during these years, Tansman was part of the circle of foreign musicians, known as the Ecole de Paris, that included Martin , Alexander Tcherepnin, Conrad Beck and Marcel Mihalovici. While his music retained many distinctively Polish features, such as Mazurka rhythms and Polish folk melodies, and while he wrote collections of Polonaises, Nocturnes, Impromptus, Waltzes and other Chopinesque miniatures, neo-classical traits appear in works [from about 1925]. Although he never completely abandoned a diatonic framework, critics of the 1920s and 30s described his harmony at times as Scriabinesque and atonal. Tansman was quick to achieve international success. He settled in Los Angeles in 1941 where he became acquainted with Schoenberg, renewed friendships with other European émigrés, including Milhaud and Stravinsky, and composed a number of film scores. He returned to Paris in 1946." Caroline Rae in Grove Music Online."Tansman was as adept at writing in C major as he was at composing serially and he made use at different times of atonality and polytonality. The music of his opera Sabbataï Zevi (1953-9), which tells of the rise and fall of the 17th-century mystic, is post-tonal in style." Anne Giradot and Richard Langham Smith in the New Grove Dictionary of Opera. Folio (349 x 270 mm). Unbound. 6 signatures of 6 bifolia and 1 signature of 4 bifolia wrapped in another bifolium protected by onionskin paper, all wrapped in blank bifolium of 20-staff music paper. 1f. (title), [i] (second title, cast list, and contents), [i] (historical background), 180, [iv] (blank) pp. Notated in blue and black ink on pre-printed 16-staff music paper with blindstamp of Edition Max Eschig, Paris. Marks in blue ink written over (i.e., reinforced) in black ink in front matter and through p. 11; only blue ink from p. 12. Date to upper right corner of p. 1: "1957-58." Date and signature to end of score: "Alexandre Tansman Paris 1958." Durations marked throughout. The overall duration as given on the title (repeated on the second title and at the end of the score) is to be read as "2 hours 15 minutes." Autograph corrections, some major, in both ink and pencil. Directions to engraver in pencil. Performance-related annotations in various hands in red, blue, and graphite pencil. Cues for entrances of characters and chorus marked in red pencil.Slightly worn; occasional staining, especially to p. 162.Together with:Sabbataï Zevi, le faux Messie. Chœurs (chantés et parlés). [Choral score.] Large folio (375 x 278 mm). Stapled. 17, [iii] (blank) pp. Facsimile of autograph manuscript. Copyright note of Editions Max Eschig, Paris, dated 1961, to foot of first page.
