        Rocket Summer. A musical outline

[New York]: Alert, 1958. Light toning to edges, old tape adhesion on front wrapper. 4to. 49 pp. Mechanically reproduced typescript, clean and unmarked. Original printed wrappers closed with three contemporary brass clasps. Based upon stories taken from Ray Bradbury's 'The Martian Chronicles,' the musical outlined here was never produced. This outline appears to be the earliest attempt to adapt Bradbury's story into a musical. Bradbury himself, along with seasoned screenwriter Sidney Carroll and Oscar-winning film director Leonard Rosenman, outline a proposed adaptation in detail. Attempts to make "Rocket Summer" into a musical thus took place earlier than previously thought. Lerner and Loewe famously were turned down in the 1960s when they asked Bradbury to adapt his story -- and it did not reach the stage until 2008, composed by Daniel Levy and with a libretto by Elizabeth Margid. This copy was that of screenwriter Sidney Carroll. An absolutely unique Bradbury item, with no other copies traced. Due the abandonment of the project, this copy retained by Carroll may well be the only copy extant.

        Il Gattopardo

Milan: Feltrinelli Editore,, November 1958. Octavo. Original yellow boards, titles to spine and front in black, illustration to front in brown. No jacket as issued. Contemporary ink gift inscription to front free endpaper. Covers a little dust soiled, internally a little toned around the margins, but a smart copy in excellent condition. Neapolitan bookseller's ticket to rear cover. First edition, first printing (one of 2,000 copies printed on 25 October but bearing the November date on the colophon). First printed in English in 1960, and the basis for Visconti's epic film starring Burt Reynolds, Alain Delon and Claudia Cardinale, this is the scarce first edition, printed in a relatively small edition a year after the author's death. Lampedusa failed to get his brilliant tragicomic satire of Sicilian aristocratic life during the Risorgimento published in his lifetime, and when it was published it was immediately attacked from both the Right (for his portrayal of aristocratic lassitude and decadence) and the Left (for his ruthless send-up of the Italian unification, and his depiction of the Sicilian proletariat in all their lumpenness: "They are coming to teach us good manners, but they won't succeed, because we think we are gods."). Before too long, however, the quality of the novel was acknowledged, and in 1959 it won Italy's most prestigious literary award, the Strega Prize.

Guide to Rockets, Missiles, and Satellites.

New York, Toronto, London: Whittlesley Hopuse, McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc.,, 1958. Octavo. Original yellow cloth. With the dust jacket. Diagrams and photographic illustrations in the text throughout. An excellent copy in the jacket, which is somewhat rubbed and creased around the edges with small chips to ends and corners. First edition, first printing, the author's own copy with his ownership inscription to the front free endpaper. Scarce. This layman's guide to rocket science, rocket warfare and the incipient space age comes from the library of the author, Dr Homer E. Newell Jr. (1915-1983). Newell was a mathematics professor and author who became a powerful US government science administrator, rising eventually to the third in command of NASA. In the early 1960s he controlled or influenced virtually all non-military unmanned space missions for the free world. He played a significant role in the negotiations which led to the creation of NASA, chairing a committee of rocket and satellite experimenters that drafted a consensus plan for a national space establishment which was presented to Eisenhower's science advisor, and advising the Senate preparedness investigating subcommittee... When the legislation establishing NASA was passed in 1958, Newell was given credit by his peers, including Van Allen, who called him "The Spark Plug" for a strong space science element in NASA. Newell joined NASA in 1958 (the year this book was published), and was successively assistant director for space sciences (1958-1960), deputy director of space flight programs (1960-1961), director of space sciences (1961-1963), associate administrator for space science and applications (1963-1967) and finally associate administrator of NASA, the third ranking position, from 1967 until 1974 (and as such overseeing the Moon Landing.) (1967-1974). In 1965, Newell was awarded the President's Award for Distinguished Federal Civilian Service. He was also commemorated in the Goddard Space Flight Center's Homer E. Newell memorial library, and asteroid 2086 Newell.

First edition, presentation copy inscribed by Albers, one of 500 copies printed, in the very scarce dust jacket. This copy has a rare inscription by Albers to front free endpaper, "Margaret Schaack, with pleasure my A." We must assume Albers was here incorporating his initial into a sarcastic "With pleasure my A[ss]". This bilingual edition of Albers poems, accompanied by full page drawings, "is the first time that Albers has authorised a collection of his poems, almost all of them unpublished, and to accompany them he has chosen the largest number of his drawings yet to be reproduced as a group" (Jacket front flap).

Continue. Stücke aus den Jahren 1958 bis 1964

1958. Collection of 73 sheets of black cardstock forming a file of ideas, with glued-down papers containing collage, montage, and 129 typed "pieces" from the important Fluxus artist covering the years 1958-1964, each sheet of cardstock reading "you can put each piece as a way of action for the rest of the pieces" along the top edge. Illustrated throughout, some with hand-coloring. Oblong 4to. Pale green linen-covered box with label mounted to lid, contents loose as issued. Berlin (René Block) 1972. From a limited edition of 150, signed by Köpcke to inside of lid. A self-taught artist, Köpcke created works across a variety of media, including literature, painting, object art, conceptual art, and action art. Although he was influenced early on by surrealism, Dada, and futurism, Köpcke discovered a community of like-minded individuals in the International Fluxus movement and turned to making work based on everyday life, the media, and consumerism. He incorporated written elements into his collages and montages, and then read the texts and released recordings of the readings. In 1957, Köpcke opened a gallery in Copenhagen which focused on Fluxus and avant-garde art, and took on a key role in bringing Fluxus to Denmark and to all of Scandinavia. Incredibly scarce; as of November 2015, WorldCat lists only a single holding in North America.
