Fidel Castro, holed up in the Cuban mountains, writes a battle content letter about the last major push of the Revolutionaries: " A lot of bullets are going to be needed." Among the finest letters extant of the recently deceased leader.

Cuba, September 29, 1958. 4" x 5.5". "Six page letter, 4"" x 5.5"", on thin note paper consisting of three sheets written on recto and verso. Penned entirely in Castro's hand, with each page numbered at the top. Dated ""Sierra Maestro/Sep 29, '58"", and signed ""!Buena suerte! /Fidel Castro"". One 2mm intact tear to the top edge of one sheet outside of margins, expected center folds, paper lightly toned. Near fine condition.A profound and revealing letter, penned by Fidel Castro just months before his ""Movement"" of armed Cuban rebels ousted the authoritarian government of then President Batista. Writing while stationed deep within the Sierra Maestra, Castro emphatically reports the outcome of the latest raid to his head of the Revolutionary Air Force, Pedro Luis, (aka Pedro Luis Díaz Lanz), one of his key personal responsible for smuggling weapons and ammunition from Costa Rica and Florida into Cuba. To put the importance of Pedro in perspective, in 1959 Time magazine reported Pedro Luis as ""One of the authentic heroes of the Castro rebellion (who) was a beardless, unostentatious young flyer named Pedro Luis Diaz Lanz. He flew weapons from the U.S. to Fidel Castro, took Manuel Urrutia, the man who later became Cuba's President, into the Sierra Maestra, and served after the rebellion as Castro's personal pilot."" This stunning letter is written during the short period just after Castro's imprisonment when he was pardoned by Batista's government in 1955 ( the bizarre outcome of being considered no longer a political threat to Batista--needless to say a poor choice on Batista's part), and up to the period leading to Castro's overthrow of the Bastisa regime. This is during the period when Castro fled to the Sierra Maestra mountain range and built an army with his brother Raúl Castro and Juan 'Almeida"" Bosque to wage guerrilla warfare. The letter, written in Spanish is translated as follows with a prenote, quite possibly written in code, quoting a message from Zoilo. The letter also makes a direct reference to requiring Pedro to fly in more weapons and ""bullets"": ""Pedro Luis: Zoilo sent the following message: ""We try operation tuesday to thursday. Arrival seven thirty to nine night. Airplane same destroy. Mark direction landing field entrance. The rest condition to exaggeration same agree for operation cancel. Confirm urgest this code. Zoilo This arrived a little delayed where I am. They responded in the plant to come. I send you the paper right now at night, so you have time to prepare everything. Hopefully this time we have a little bit of luck. There is much need for your trips. There is a lot of fighting and the month of october will be of extraordinary activity. The combat at Cerro was heavy (Cerro is a borough of Havana). The two 87 mortars work with extraordinary precision. The encampment; tents, the command post, were direct targets of our mortar shots They defended themselves with cannons, machine guns 50, mortars and other weapons. The object of the attack was to impede the removal of troops from here to Camaguey and other parts. Although we could not make them surrender, the strategic purpose was accomplished and they were defeated - no great number of casualties. Our troop suffered five casualties. All were mortal wounds. The people all performed very well and were valiant. I am sorry you didn't get to see that. Almeida inflicted a defeat to the enemy causing them 25 casualties, occupying 10 weapons and 55 prisoners, among them the Lieutenant Colonel Nelson Carrasco Artiles, wounded and prisoner. A lot of bullets are going to be needed, Pedro Luis. You all can not rest in the coming weeks. Good Luck! Fidel Castro"" A fantastic letter written by Castro. The reader can literally feel like they are holed up in the mountains discussing guerrilla strategy to overthrow a government. The sheer complexity and duration of this 'movement' for the 'people' had been brewing for years going back to a time to when Castro was still a young attorney and first attempted to evoke change from authoritarian rule using his legal background and hoping the pen would be mightier than the sword. At the time, Batista antagonized the Cuban population by forming lucrative links to organized crime, becoming as brutal and vicious as any dictator in modern history and was completely indifferent to popular concerns. In early 1952, via a more peaceful attempt, Castro had first legally petitioned for the overthrow of Batista, whom he had accused of corruption and tyranny. However, his constitutional arguments were rejected by the Cuban courts. Castro was known to have remarked "" I am convinced more than ever of the dictatorship's intention, masked in many ways, to remain in power for twenty years, ruling as now by the use of terror and crime and ignoring the patience of the Cuban people, which has its limits"". After deciding that the Cuban regime could not be replaced through legal means, Castro resolved to launch an armed revolution; and with the support of the begrudged masses the path to change was forged."

Stuttgart, 1958, 1st edition. 365 pp, photos. In German. One of the most impressive Himalayan ascents of the last century was Austrian party of Marcus Schmuck, Fritz Wintersteller, Kurt Diemberger and Hermann Buhls 1957 first ascent of Pakistans 8,047 m Broad Peak.         White Line No 1. Photos. Digital graphic Wolfgang Schultheiß. Text John Wood. Deutsch - Englisch.

Facsimile of The Book of Urizen

Clairvaux, Jura, France: The Trianon Press for the William Blake Trust,, 1958. Tall quarto. Original red half morocco, marbled sides, top edge gilt. Housed in the publisher's marbled slipcase. Colour illuminated facsimiles thoughout achieved by collotype and hand stencil. Very slight rubbing to the tips, and some rubbing to the extremities of the slipcase, excellent condition. First edition thus, number 332 of 480 copies thus (this one of the 240 for the United States), from a total edition of 526 copies on Arches pure rag paper made to match that used by Blake, each page watermarked with Blake's monogram. Blake scholar Geoffrey Keynes (1887-1982), the brother of John Maynard, provides a commentary and bibliographical history: "The Book of Urizen contains the first part of Blake's conception of the universal myth. It recounts the story of the creation of the material world and of mankind, and so has to deal with the inherent problem of evil. Urizen, the God of reason, resembling the Hebrew Jehovah, is the Creator... Los, the poetic genius and symbol of time, is also introduced, since Reason cannot exist without Imagination; but from Los developed Pity, resulting in the division of his soul with the appearance of his Emanation, named Enitharmon, his female counterpart. The offspring of Los and Enitharmon is Orc, the Spirit of Revolt. Ultimately Urizen establishes religion, and mankind becomes entangled in the web of religion as civilisation emerges in Egypt.

Doctor Zhivago

Pantheon, (1958) Pasternak is best known as the author of Doctor Zhivago (1957), a novel which takes place between the Russian Revolution of 1905 and the First World War. Due to the novel's independent-minded stance on the socialist state, Doctor Zhivago was rejected for publication in the USSR. At the instigation of Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, Doctor Zhivago was smuggled to Milan and published in 1957. Pasternak was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958, an event which both humiliated and enraged the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, which forced him to decline the prize, though his descendants were...Believe to be First American Edition, 1958, stated Twentieth Printing. Translated from the Russian by Max Hayward and Manya Harari "the Poems of Yurii Zhivago" by Bernard Guilbert Guerney.Book in good condition, grey boards, no yelllowing or soiling, text and colors are vibrant.         The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1958 10th Impression in Original Dustjacket with Custom Slipcase

London: Allen & Unwin, 1958. 2nd Edition. Original Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. J.R.R. Tolkien. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Allen & Unwin in 1958. This book is in beautiful Near Fine condition, with beautiful bright clean and unmarked green boards. No previous owner names or any writing noted. No foxing or offsetting noted. The map endpapers are clean and bright, unmarked. The bright & clean boards are the original green cloth with dark blue stamping of Tolkien's own Mountains and Dragon design, with a couple of lightly bumped corners, and no fading of the bright green covers. The title verso has the full printing history up to this tenth impression of 1958. The original dustjacket is correctly marked the 10th impression, and would appear to be the original as both book and dustjacket are remarkably well preserved. In 1957 (Ninth Impression book) Houghton Mifflin ordered a number of sheet sets to be imported from A&U for the US 1957 Ninth Printing, however after A&U had already printed the full run, HM backed out of part of the order due to import costs and reduced their order by 1,000 sheet sets. So A&U assumed they would have 1,000 more UK books than originally planned and as such they had Jackets produced for this overrun. Subsequently, HM changed their mind again and took the 1,000 sheet sets they had canceled, thus leaving A&U with 1,000 extra Ninth Impression Jackets. They simply used those extra jackets on the 1958 Tenth Impression Books. So there should be 1000 copies of the 1958 UK Tenth Impression book with a Ninth Impression Jacket, which would make this even more scarce than the 3,500 copies of the Tenth Impression books in the Tenth Impression Jackets. The dustjacket is not price clipped and in Near Fine condition, with a tiny amount of rubbing to the tips of the folds, lacking any of the normal tears to the edges. Shows a line of soiling the the interior edges of the flaps. Edges of the text block are clean and unfoxed. A beautiful copy, of an early printing, of this much sought after children's classic. A custom faux leather slipcase included, featuring the JRRT Monogram to the front cover of the slipcase. Additional digital images are available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Near Fine / Near Fine.

ANGOLA AGRADECE A SALAZAR.

Playback.

London: Hamish Hamilton, 1958.. FIRST EDITION, ADVANCE BINDING, previously unrecorded. Octavo. pp.[6]; 208. In publisher's GREEN cloth tooled in silver to the spine, top edge tinted blue. Black dust-wrapper, designed by Patricia Davey. A crisp, fine copy of the true first printing of the final Philip Marlowe story, which precedes the US first by some 3 months. The present example is a previously unrecorded variant binding of green cloth with an alternative font and swelled rule blocked on the spine and with a different, smaller pictorial monogram device stamped at the foot. The book is trimmed a little shorter than the trade binding and given a blue topstain. We are in no doubt that this is an advance issue in a certified library binding using the Hamish Hamilton brasses with permission. It would not have been commercially available and is produced in-line with Heinemann's early binding for Graham Greene's 'The Heart of the Matter and Cape's advance bindings for several of Ian Fleming James Bond first editions. The material used is binder's cloth, the book is trimmed with a topstain and original tooling is used. Cape typically produced 300 advance bindings (Gilbert) and it is conceivable that Hamish Hamilton's figure would be similarly low. An important find.

Folio (10 by 13 inches), publisher's original full green pebbled morocco, marbled endpapers, uncut and largely unopened. $1500.Lavishly illustrated limited edition of Pirenne's renowned history of Europe, letter "M" of only 26 lettered copies printed on Vergé d'Arches paper. Only upon his death in 1935 did his son Jacques discover the manuscript and decide to publish it and continue the work his father began. Henri Pirenne's history constitutes the first volume of this four-volume folio set; Jacques added three more volumes to bring the history to the end of World War II and the beginning of NATO.         My Wife Marilyn (Original corrected typescript, with accompanying typed letter signed)

New York: Life Magazine, 1958. Arthur Miller's typescript draft of for his article, "My Wife Marilyn," signed for submission by the author and playwright. This edit for the final published version, which omits well over a third of the content present here, was published in "Life" magazine in its December 22, 1958 issue. Editorial corrections and (substantial) omissions are in holograph pencil, all by the magazine's proofreader/content editor. Together with a typed letter signed ("Arthur Miller") to "Life" magazine editor Ralph Graves, dated October 31, 1958, with original mailing envelope. Written to accompany Richard Avedon's portraiture of the actress in a spread headlined "Marilyn Monroe in a Remarkable Re-creation of Fabled Enchantresses," with a line-up including incarnations of Lillian Russell, Theda Bara, Clara Bow, Marlene Dietrich, and Jean Harlow. Miller's essay describes Monroe's "miraculous sense of sheer play" in channeling the past movie stars and her role as their successor. In this letter, Miller discusses the article and apologizes to Graves for initially writing far too much. In part: "It reads like a precis of the original, I'm afraid, much of the feeling having been removed. But it will do, I guess. If you've got something better to use please do so. I'm sorry, again, that the wires got crossed and I conceived it for a much greater length. In any case, the photos are still miraculous." The typescript shows increasing revisions, with the second half (pp. 6-11) almost entirely struck through. It examines in detail the nuances behind each pose and each portrait, exploring at length Monroe's approach to resurrecting the old Hollywood stars and the cultural milieux from which they emerged. In a partially excised passage, Miller writes: "I am quite conceivably prejudiced, but I think this collection is a wonder of Marilyn's wittiness. As Lillian Russell, Marilyn sits [on] the solid gold bicycle just inexpertly enough to indicate that she is, after all, a lady… Her hands lace around the bike handles so much more femininely than they grasp the fan as Clara Bow. And here again is the difference between imitation and interpretation, between making an affect and rendering a spirit." Though a few lines and one longer passage from the original manuscript were salvaged for the published version, most were cut. These include a comparison of Monroe's face to "a lake under a changing sky" and Miller's conviction that she is "the living proof that Boticelli was only painting the literal truth." Where the published essay is a polished description of the electricity of Avedon's set and Monroe's ability to capture the "spirit of an age" and document "a kind of history of our mass fantasy, as far as seductresses are concerned," this typescript reveals an unedited account of not only an inspired collaboration, but Miller's beguilement over his wife's many talents. Manuscript: 11 typescript leaves, rectos only; graph paper, ruled on three sides, lightly toned at margins, with staple holes to upper corners, final leaf creased; signed in ink "Arthur Miller" to upper margin of first page; revisions throughout in pencil. Typed letter signed: One leaf, recto only; original 9.5 x 12.5 inch mailing envelope, annotated in ink, "For Life Magazine / December 22, 1958," also present.

I Always Wanted to Be Somebody

New York: Harper & Brothers. (1958). First. First edition. Octavo. Corners bumped and a bit of wear on the boards, very good in slightly rubbed very good price-clipped dustwrapper with a tiny nick. The tennis star's candid autobiography Inscribed to her doubles partner.Gibson, born in South Carolina and raised in Harlem, learned to play paddle tennis there and eventually tennis. She was the first African-American to play in the U.S. Nationals (the precursor to the U.S. Open) in 1950. In 1956, Gibson became the first African-American to win the French Open, while also winning, with Angela Buxton, the doubles titles at both the French Open and Wimbledon. In 1957, she won the Wimbledon singles and doubles titles, as well as the U.S. Nationals singles and mixed doubles titles; in 1958, she again won the U.S. Nationals singles title and the Wimbledon singles and doubles titles. She retired to turn professional because (according to the autobiography), "my finances were in heartbreaking shape... you can't eat a crown." When professional tennis didn't pay the bills, Gibson became, in 1964, the first African-American woman to join the Ladies Professional Golf tour. This copy is Inscribed by Gibson in the year of publication to her 1956 doubles partner, Angela Buxton: "November 30, 1958. To: Angela, A Great Gal & Sincere Friend. Althea." Buxton, a British Jew, had her own obstacles to overcome in getting onto the tennis court, she retired due to a wrist injury after her 1956 championship wins with Gibson. Their victory at Wimbledon, after coming together as partners when no one else would play with either of them, was heralded in one British newspaper, in very small type, under the headline, "Minorities Win."The friendship between Gibson and Buxton would last a lifetime. In 1995, when Gibson was ill and destitute, she confided to Buxton that she was contemplating suicide. Buxton led a fund-raising campaign on Gibson's behalf that allowed Gibson to live out her remaining eight years in relative comfort. The title of the book comes from Gibson's quote: "I always wanted to be somebody. If I made it, it's half because I was game enough to take a lot of punishment along the way and half because there were a lot of people who cared enough to help me." An excellent association copy of a towering figure in the history of African-American sports, Inscribed to one of the people who cared enough, and helped. .
