Roemsche historie oft gesten, . . . nu erstmael in onser Nederlantscher spraken ghedruckt.Antwerp, (colophon: printed by Jan Grapheus and sold by Jan Gymnicus), August 1541. Folio. With the title-page and each of the 3 part-titles in a frame built up from 4 woodcuts (part 2 with different blocks than the others), well over 200 woodcuts in the text (including repeats). Late 17th-century calf, richly gold-tooled spine.

      - Belg. Typ. 1958; BMC STC Dutch, p. 123; Funck, p. 401; Machiels L404; USTC 403306; not in Bibl. Belg. First Dutch edition of Livius's classic history of Rome, beautifully illustrated with hundreds of woodcuts, many measuring about 12×14 cm. Written about AD 10, it is the most extensive work to survive from classical antiquity, and the present translation for the first time acquainted a wider audience in the Low Countries with the "knightly, manly deeds" (as the title puts it) of classical heroes. The woodcuts provide a fascinating view of clothing, architecture, military and other equipment, boats and sometimes trades and other human activities. The view they provide is not of classical Rome, however, but of the early sixteenth-century, for the artists made very little attempt at historical accuracy. A few showing battles, sieges, councils, visitations, etc. are used many times to illustrate different events, but others more specifically reflect the subjects of the text. So we see a hundred-and-twenty-foot dragon, the death of Archimedes, the use of elephants in battle, the burning of books (very topical in 1541!) and many other lively scenes.Owner's entry on title-page, partly erased. Leaves *2-5 misbound, title-page and leaf 207 detached, water stains, affecting the text in the first and last few quires. Front hinge and head and foot of spine damaged. Overall in good condition. An influential and beautifully illustrated edition of a great classic.

        Things Fall Apart.

Walt Disney: the Art of Animation. The story of the Disney Studio contribution to a new art.

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1958 - Quarto. Original illustrated printed boards, grey cloth spine, illustrated endpapers. With the dust jacket. Housed in a black flat back cloth solander box with Mickey Mouse blocked to front. Mild bumping to corners, minor nick to tail of spine. An excellent copy in bright jacket with chipped and creased extremities, lightly stained rear panel, and a touch of foxing to flaps. Illustrations and photographs in colour and black and white throughout. First edition, first printing. Inscribed by Walt Disney on the verso of the front free endpaper, "To Vita Best Wishes Walt Disney." Additionally it is inscribed by Roy Disney and contains the signatures of more than 100 other people in the Walt Disney Studio, including seven of "The Nine Old Men" who were the key animators of the studio, this copy with the signatures of Eric Larson, Frank Thomas, Milt Kahl, Ollie Johnston, Marc Davis, and Woolie Reitherman. The signatures range from the studio nurse to directors of animation. This book seems to have been given as a retirement/going away gift from the studio to Vita Victoria, whom worked in the ink and paint department, which was at the time where the majority of females worked in animation, some artists refereed to it as the "Finishing School" of hand drawn animation. The paint and ink department was responsible for transferring drawings onto celluloids and giving them colour before being sent off to be photographed. A wonderful title which illustrates the family atmosphere the studio was noted for. Truly an exceptional Disneyana piece. [Attributes: First Edition]

Oh What a Wonderful Feeling". Promotional Package featuring Robert Goulet

      - Philips Electronics (Canada) Promotional "Record Album" featuring rare silkscreen of Robert Goulet, c. 1958 This attractive and imaginative promotional package was used by sales reps to entice store owners to stock Philishave products, notably the new Philishave rotary electric Speedshaver. The format is a brown leatherette "record album" with five sleeves containing advertising material instead of vinyl lp recordings. The covers feature the title of a "musical" -- Oh What A Wonderful Feeling" -- within an oval design in gold. The front endpaper is a woodgrain pattern with a short text that describes the campaign as an "exciting, happy-go-lucky advertising idea". The first item in the album is a full-colour silkscreen on heavy cardstock of a cheerful "Bob Goulet: Outstanding Singing Star of Television and the Canadian Stage" wearing Western garb, using the shaver. The five sleeves are each titled ("The Star", "Record Breaking Performance", etc.); each includes a silkscreened, cardboard replica of an lp with text that refers to the title of that sleeve (the first, for instance, begins "Here¿s the Star "¿ with the "lp" label titled "Overture to Comfort", with a drawing of the shaver; the second "lp" is titled The Shaver with the Hinge on Top"). The third sleeve contains two attached "lps" that open to reveal details of the advertising campaign, which included double-page ads in Canadian magazines, newspaper ads, and television spots "on 44 stations". The ads featured Goulet and other TV and stage stars. The final sleeve has on the back a pocket (titled "Here are the Props") that includes numerous colourful promotional items: images of store displays, a poster, order form, two "tickets" to the premiere of the "musical", and two advertising lists showing when and where ads were to be placed. The overall condition of the album and contents is excellent, with some wear to the cover: some scuffing to cover edges and spine; a snall stain on front, a bit of buckling on back, and places along spine edge where paper has separated. Inside, there are offset marks from the album bolts and the sleeve pocket printing onto the back end paper, the two ad lists are scuffed at the top, and the silkscreen of Goulet has several small scuffs. Colours throughout are bright and there is no chipping or wear to the paper contents. This is a wonderful example of 1950s advertising. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Granite and Rainbow

London: The Hogarth Press 1958 - First edition, first printing. Personal copy of author's sister Vanessa Bell, with her ownership signature "Vanessa Bell" in blue ink to the front free endpaper, and with the front panel of the dust jacket designed by Bell adhered to the front pastedown and the dust jacket spine adhered to the front free endpaper. Publisher's royal blue cloth, lettered in gilt; white dust jacket with decorations in light blue and black. Very good, with some wear and rubbing to the edges, a hint of toning to the spine, a faint hint of foxing to the page edges, otherwise bright and clean pages. Housed in a custom quarter-leather clamshell box. Granite and Rainbow is the fourth and final posthumously published collection of Virginia Woolf's essays, discovered by B. J. Kirkpatrick (Woolf's bibliographer) and Dr. Mary Lyon (author of Virginia Woolf as Critic). The text is divided into two sections: "The Art of Biography," which includes "Money and Love," "Poe's Helen," and "Waxworks at the Abbey," and "The Royal Academy;" and "The Art of Fiction," which includes "Hours in a Library," "Impassioned Prose," and "The Anatomy of Fiction." The title Granite and Rainbow is a reference to the life of an artist. Specifically, Virginia identified Vanessa's nature as having a complex combination of vulnerability and granitic strength. During her lifetime, Woolf wrote many articles on writing and literature for serial publications, many of which were published in her The Common Reader series (1925 and 1932). After Virginia's death, her husband Leonard Woolf published her remaining essays, but managed to miss a few, which, after being discovered by Kirkpatrick and Lyon, were published together in this volume. Like many of her published works, Granite and Rainbow was edited by her husband, published through her own press, and wrapped in a dust jacket designed by her sister, all of which reinforce the highly personal nature of Woolf's writing and creative process.         Curious George

Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston 1958 - Copyrighted 1941, with no statement of later printings, but judging from the list of titles on the last page and rear jacket flap, this copy dates from around 1958 ('Curious George Flies a Kite' is the most recent title on the list). The full red cloth hardcover binding is clean and holding tight with a touch of wear to the board corners. The interior and text are clean and unmarked with no signs of previous ownership. The dust jacket remains unclipped ($3.25) and is bright and attractive with some toning to the spine, small chips at the spine ends, spotting along one edge of the rear panel, and light wear to the corner folds; presents well under fresh archival mylar. NOT ex-lib. A nice early printing of this classic; clean and solid in attractive jacket. 56pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Drover's Cook and other Verses

Sydney Australia: F H Johnston, 1958. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Inscribed by Author(s). 1st Edition. A genuinely rare 1st edition of Australian poetry with dedication to this bookseller's father. Dust jacket is in fair condition and is browning to the spine with small losses. The original jacket is a form of tracing paper with a cobweb pattern visible when held to the light. Exceptionally scarce jacket is fragile and has been placed in a loose protective sleeve. The book is well preserved with no major faults. The book is inscribed to Noel Miles with my compliments Tom Quilty. Noel was a geologist for a mining company that worked the Hall's Creek - De Grey area in the 1950's. Thomas John Quilty (1 April 1887 - 1979) was an Australian station owner, pastoralist, philanthropist, and bush poet. To this day he still holds the record for the largest freehold land acreage in Australia's history; over 3 million acres for a single property. In total, he controlled over 4.5 million acres of land. The book also comes with a newspaper clipping (Obituary) from a WA newspaper. "WA Cattleman dies at 93".

Singerie songerie: a masque on the subject of lyric mode (Edition De Luxe, SIGNED)

Rome: The Willoughby Institute, 1958. 1st. Leather bound. Zev (Daniel Albert Harris). First Edition, No. 3 of 15 Edition De Luxe copies signed at colophon by both author and artist. Folio; 51pp. Printed at Societa Grafica Romana. A lovely fine press production featuring 46 hand colored illustrations including one spectacular fold-out plus one loosely laid in (reminiscent of the Danish artist Bjorn Wiinblad). Also laid in is a 1968 ALS (with cover) and Rome business card from the illustrator 'Zev' to Bobby and Paco Ferro, Carmel, California regarding an upcoming (October 28) opening of the artist's work at groundbreaking Ankrum Gallery, Los Angeles. Bound in 3/4 red calf and blue marbled boards with black spine label lettered in gilt. Hinges professionally reinforced else a Near Fine copy in somewhat edgeworn matching publisher's slipcase. Born in Mobile, Alabama in 1921, Eugene Walter was an artistic/intellectual Forrest Gump. He was a character in late-1940's Greenwich Village and 1950's ex-patriate Paris and Rome, popping up in the literary and film societies of the time (he was an editor of the Paris Review). He wrote poetry, books, acted in Fellini films and translated Italian films into English. 'The Willoughby Institute' is Walter's inside joke; as a child he had an imaginary dog named 'Willoughby' and throughout his life he used 'Dr. S. Willoughby' and 'Professor James B. Willoughby' as pseudonyms.
