Poems and Drawings.

New Haven, Connecticut: The Readymade Press,, 1958. Oblong octavo. Original illustrated wrappers. With the printed crepe dust jacket. Full page illustrations by Albers throughout. Rear wrapper faintly marked, dust jacket mildly toned, with some minor chips to top edge, but an exceptional copy. First edition, presentation copy inscribed by Albers, one of 500 copies printed, in the very scarce dust jacket. This copy has a rare inscription by Albers to front free endpaper, "Margaret Schaack, with pleasure my A." We must assume Albers was here incorporating his initial into a sarcastic "With pleasure my A[ss]". This bilingual edition of Albers poems, accompanied by full page drawings, "is the first time that Albers has authorised a collection of his poems, almost all of them unpublished, and to accompany them he has chosen the largest number of his drawings yet to be reproduced as a group" (Jacket front flap).

Continue. Stücke aus den Jahren 1958 bis 1964

1958. Collection of 73 sheets of black cardstock forming a file of ideas, with glued-down papers containing collage, montage, and 129 typed "pieces" from the important Fluxus artist covering the years 1958-1964, each sheet of cardstock reading "you can put each piece as a way of action for the rest of the pieces" along the top edge. Illustrated throughout, some with hand-coloring. Oblong 4to. Pale green linen-covered box with label mounted to lid, contents loose as issued. Berlin (René Block) 1972. From a limited edition of 150, signed by Köpcke to inside of lid. A self-taught artist, Köpcke created works across a variety of media, including literature, painting, object art, conceptual art, and action art. Although he was influenced early on by surrealism, Dada, and futurism, Köpcke discovered a community of like-minded individuals in the International Fluxus movement and turned to making work based on everyday life, the media, and consumerism. He incorporated written elements into his collages and montages, and then read the texts and released recordings of the readings. In 1957, Köpcke opened a gallery in Copenhagen which focused on Fluxus and avant-garde art, and took on a key role in bringing Fluxus to Denmark and to all of Scandinavia. Incredibly scarce; as of November 2015, WorldCat lists only a single holding in North America.

1958. 3 Originalleinenbände mit goldgepr. Rücken- und Deckeltitel. 459, (1) SS. 289, (3) SS. 430, (2) SS. Mit 1 gedr. Portraitfrontispiz. Gr.-4to. [Dabei:] Ders. (1891-1953). Eigenh. Die Arbeit an der 1941 entstandenen und 1946-52 umfassend revidierten Oper bestimmte die letzten zwölf Jahre seines Lebens: "The outbreak of the war gave impetus to a project Prokofiev had sketched out in spring 1941, for an opera based on 'War and Peace'. His initial plan for a small-scale, intimate opera which would highlight the personal dramas in the novel was expanded, by the war aspects in particular, and [...] in August 1941 he began the music [...] The following April, he finished 'War and Peace' [...] He sent the score of the opera to Moscow for approval, and in the meantime began its orchestration [which he completed] in March 1943 [...] Following the advice of the Committee on the Arts in Moscow, Prokofiev had drastically revised the opera in the process; the war scenes had been extended and the patriotic elements strengthened. It was no longer an intimate opera but an epic and heroic work. Prokofiev's incentive in revising the score was the promise of a production of the opera at the Bol'shoy at the end of 1943, for which Eisenstein was to design the sets [...] But, as had happened so often, the performance was first cancelled, then postponed indefinitely. Throughout the rest of his life Prokofiev continually made revisions and additions to 'War and Peace', including the composition of two new scenes, in a series of attempts to secure performances. It was only in 1957, however, after his death, that anything like a complete version of the opera was staged" (New Grove). Als 1948 das ZK Prokofjews Werke "formalistischer Perversionen" bezichtigte, geriet insbesondere "Krieg und Frieden" unter Beschuß. - Ecken minimal bestoßen, sonst sehr wohlerhalten. Durchgehend in russischer Sprache. Erschienen als Teil 6 der Werke (Sobranie sochinenii); Verlagsnummern M. 26793a G., M. 26793b G. und M. 26793v G. OCLC 19801829. New Grove 15, 298. MGG 10, 1649.

I don't need to - because you know. I love you. George". - The subsequent 4 volumes, all in full leather, have the name of "George W. Ray, jr." in gilt at the lower spine of each volume. This is an important collection that documents in full detail the efforts by the Arabian American Oil company to keep control of the distribution of Saudi Arabian oil. The Arbitration was a result of the Saudi Arabian Government's decision, in 1954, to award a right of priority for Saudi oil transportation to the shipping company of Aristoteles Onassis. Aramco argued that this decision infringed upon their own exclusive right, granted by the Saudis in 1933 for a term of 60 years, to export the oil for which they drilled: in essence, the Onassis agreement prohibited Aramco from using their own ships. The Arbitration ruled in Aramco's favour. Consequently, the Saudi Government refused to enter into any further arbitrations and would agree only to extend Aramco's privilege for another ten years. By 1980, Saudi Arabia would take full control of their oil and its distribution; since 1988, the company has been officially known as Saudi Aramco. - Elegantly bound and in excellent state of preservation throughout. This documentation of the Arbitration process was published in a very limited press-run, with all copies going to the parties involved (Aramco and the Saudi-Arabian Government) and selected libraries. While a number of copies of the Session Transcripts are listed in library catalogues (including the Award and not infrequently additional volumes labelled "Memorials"), only the Cambrige University library is listed as holding another copy of the "Statesmanship in arbitration" volume. From the personal possession of Aramco's General Counsel, George W. Ray, jr., and his wife. OCLC 56152161; 12823218; 1958718.

Eigenh. Korrekturen der Druckfahnen zu: Ferdinand Ebner. Gesammelte Werke. Im Auftrage der Ferdinand-Ebner-Gesellschaft herausgegeben von Michael Pfliegler und Ludwig Haensel. Bd. II: Die Wirklichkeit Christi. Brenneraufsätze. Für den Druck vorbereitet von Franz Seyr. Wien, Thomas Morus Presse im Verlag Herder Wien, 1958.

1958. 353, (3) SS. Gefalzte, beschnittene und einzeln klammergeheftete Einzellagen in Pappumschlag. 8vo.

Collection of Letters and Telegrams to Samuel Barber from the Premieres of "Vanessa" and "Antony & Cleopatra"

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A fascinating and important collection of autograph letters and telegrams to the important American composer, dating from the premieres of his two operas, Vanessa (1958), and Antony and Cleopatra (1966). Included are autograph letters from Aaron Copland, John Browning (who premiered Barber's Piano Concerto), Rosalind Elias (the original Erika in Vanessa and Charmain in Antony and Cleopatra), Ignace Strasvogel, and other friends and admirers, and telegrams from Leonard Bernstein, Martha Graham, Jerome Robbins, W. H. Auden, Noel Coward, and many others.
While Vanessa, with libretto by Menotti, won Barber the 1958 Pulitzer Prize for music, Antony and Cleopatra, written for the opening of the new Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center, was not well-received. Franco Zeffirelli, chosen to write the libretto and stage the opera, weighed down the production with over-the-top scenery, animals, and extras; technical difficulties marred the opening night. As Barber departed New York for Italy the very next morning, his years of success had for the most part come to an end. The 1966 letters to Barber reflect his unhappy state, with many of his friends consoling him over the bad reviews and assuring him that his music transcended the problems of staging.
Included are:
88 telegrams sending best wishes and congratulations on the première of Vanessa in 1958, sent by W. H. Auden, Noel Coward, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Jerome Robbins, John Browning, Frank O'Hara, Stephen Spender, Martha Graham, Erich Leinsdorf, Antal Dorati, Andre Kostelanetz, Regina Reznik ("Your old Baroness"), Roberta Peters, G. Schirmer, Lillian Gish, Max Rudolf, Samuel Chotzinoff, the heads of ASCAP and NBC, and many other luminaries and friends.
3 letters about Vanessa, two ALS and one TLS, dated January 1958. One from Roberta Peters, celebrated Met coloratura, thanking Barber for sending her some music, mentioning that she is looking forward to learning Barber's song "Nuvoletta," and wishing him good luck for Vanessa, 2 pp.; one from Eleanor Belmont, a member of the Metropolitan Opera board, congratulating Barber on the premiere, 1 p.; and one from a music student, William Gordon, expressing his love for the opera and asking where he can obtain the score, 1 p. typed and undated.
19 letters, mostly autograph with one TLS, to Barber from before and after the 1966 premiere of Antony and Cleopatra. Dated September-November 1966. Letters are from: Ignace Strasfogel, 1 p; John Browning, 3 pp.; Rosalind Elias, 2 pp.; John Barrows, 1 p.; Aaron Copland, wishing Barber the best for the opening, 1 p. with original envelope; David Johnson, from Time-Life Records, 2 pp.; C. W. Bailey, 3 pp.; Dick, 1 p.; Ellie Frankfurter, 3 pp.; an unidentified correspondent in Russian, 1 p.; Nina Fassler, 1 p.; Lisette Lewis and another correspondent in one airmail letter from South Africa, 3 pp.; Andrew Chiappe, 2 pp.; Channing Way, Jr (a West Chester friend),1 p.; Katy Katsoyanis, mentioning Dimitri Mitropoulos, 1 p.; "Chandler," 1 p.; Edith Jackson (Barber's old school teacher from West Chester!), 2 pp.; Horace P. Halsing (from West Chester), 1 p.; Mrs. Henry Holt, 3 pp. Also included is one letter about the premiere addressed to "Bill" from "Ed" on the letterhead of the St. Thomas Aquinas Rectory, Chicago; and an envelope addressed to Barber (letter missing) from Sol Schoenbach, postmarked October 31, 1966.
Also included are 2 telegrams sent to Barber at the Metropolitan Opera House on the occasion of the premiere of Antony and Cleopatra. One is from an Ada Camillo congratulating Barber on behalf of all Cadegliano (Menotti's hometown in Lombardy). The other reads, "Love the story hated the music I think you are an American disgrace. Frank Terez (17)" - a comic reaction to Barber's music, but one that may have hit a nerve?

The Cat in the Hat Comes Back.

New York: Random House, 1958. First edition. Octavo, original illustrated boards, pictorial endpapers. Inscribed by Dr. Seuss opposite the title page. Very good in a very good dust jacket with some light rubbing. The year after Theodore Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, broke new ground in children's books with The Cat in the Hat, he brought back the immediately popular character--with 26 little cats under his red-and-white stovepipe, not to mention the mysterious "Voom"--for a new madcap adventure. The title was the second from Beginner Books, Geisel's own imprint at Random House; in very little time, as that line's identifying logo, "the Cat's image would become synonymous with learning to read" (Cohen, 324).
