[Miscellaneous materials relating to Hemingway's East African air safaris, from the collection of his pilot, Captain Roy Marsh.]

13 items total. A remarkable archive of material from the collection of Captain Roy Marsh, Hemingway's pilot on the two near-fatal aeroplane crashes in East Africa in early 1954. Roy Marsh (1924-2014) later served as chief pilot with Air Mahe in the Seychelles and then as a private pilot for the Pahlavi royal family of Iran, who purchased D'Arros Island in the Amirantes Group of the Coralline Seychelles in 1975. "In order to view his beloved East Africa from another perspective, Hemingway hired a pilot named Roy Marsh to take him and Mary up in a Cessna 180 for a series of flights over such marvelous spots as the Ngorongoro Crater, the Mountains of the Moon in Ruanda-Urundi and the Murchison Falls in Uganda [all pictured on Marsh's map], where the Nile descends in various levels, rather than abruptly plunging down like Niagara. As Marsh circled over the Falls for the third time, he saw a flight of ibis in front of the plane and dove sharply under them. The plane's propeller and tail assembly struck a telegraph wire suspended above the gorge and Marsh was forced to crash-land in heavy bush. Mary suffered two broken ribs and Hemingway another shoulder sprain, but Marsh was unhurt" (Kenneth S. Lynn, Hemingway, 1987, p. 571). Hemingway recounts the incident in "The Christmas Gift", published in By-Line: Ernest Hemingway, Selected Articles and Dispatches of Four Decades (1967). On the following day, while attempting to reach medical care in Entebbe, the Hemingways boarded a second plane that exploded at take-off, with Hemingway suffering burns and another concussion, this one serious enough to cause leaking of cerebral fluid. Eventually they arrived in Entebbe – only to find reporters covering the story of the writer's demise. Hemingway briefed the reporters and spent the next few weeks recuperating and reading his erroneous obituaries. LIST OF MATERIALS: Book (1): a) The Old Man and the Sea. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1953. Octavo. Original pale blue cloth, spine lettered in silver. With the dust jacket. First edition, third printing: with the title page dated 1953, the Scribner Press imprint on the copyright page and Scribner's "A" absent (as called for by Grissom). Original watercolour for the famous "Babar" series.

Paris, [not after 1954]. - 304:495 mm. Signed at lower left: "Laur de Brunhoff". A charming, large-format watercolour showing Celesteville, the capital of "Le pays des Éléphants", Babar's Kingdom. The illustration was used as a double-page spread in "Babar à la fête de Célesteville" (1954) and thus bears a few pencilled marks by the printer in the blank margins. - The children’s classic, Babar, began as a bedtime story that Cécile de Brunhoff told her young sons, Laurent and Mathieu, in 1930, when they were five and four years old, respectively. They loved the story about the little elephant so much that they asked their father, who was an artist, to draw pictures for them of the elephant world their mother had described. He did and eventually created a book, Histoire de Babar: le petit éléphant (The Story of Babar), which was published by Jardin des Modes, a family-run publishing house. Jean de Brunhoff created six more Babar books. - De Brunhoff, who holds both French and American citizenship, was made an Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur. - Perfectly preserved. Circe and Ulysses. The Inner Temple Masque, Presented by the Gentlemen there January 13, 1614. Written by William Browne of Tavistock and now edited, with an Essay on William Browne and the English Masque, by Gwyn Jones.

Golden Cockerel Press. 1954. Royal 8vo. Original full green morocco, gilt design at centre of both covers, spine lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, others untrimmed; 11 wood-engravings by Mark Severin; spine very slightly sunned, small black mark on lower board, otherwise a very nice copy. Limited to 300 copies, this being one of 100 specially bound copies with four extra engravings. "Written for performance in 1614 to 1615, Circe and Ulysses is among the best of the picturesque and ravishing displays staged on festal occasions in banqueting halls to delight the audience with a harmony of spectacle and poetry, dance and song. To the new production Mark Severin contributed sparkling engravings of extravagently dressed male masquers and more or less bare girls: the type was chosen to accord with the darkness of his work on wood." (Cock-a-hoop 194). From the library of Thomas Yoseloff, the last owner of the Golden Cockerel Press, by family descent, but with no ownership markings.

        The Serpent's Presence.

The Golden Cockerel Press. 1954. 8vo., original half green morocco with crimson buckram boards, lettered in gilt on spine with snakes blocked in gilt on boards. With 8 wood engravings by Clifford Webb. Spine slightly sunned otherwise a very good copy. First edition, limited edition of 290 numbered copies, this one of 60 specially bound. "The subtley of this parable, based on the story of Adam and Eve, was adaquately matched, I think, by the fantastical type I used to print it. The effectof the Cochin [type], with the Fry's Ornamented used for the main line of the title-page and the initial letters in the text, had quite a different effect from anything else I had done. Clifford Webb's engravings caught the mood of the book in a rather miraculous way - some of his best work went into it." Reach for the Sky. The Story of Douglas Bader. [Sixth Impression]. SIGNED BY BADER: IN FULL MOROCCO

Collins. 8vo., Sixth Impression, with frontispiece and 24 plates on 12; handsomely bound in burgundy full crushed morocco, sides with gilt frame border, back with raised bands ruled in gilt, second and fourth compartments lettered in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt with a propeller motif, hand-made endpapers, a most attractive copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. SIGNED BY BADER ON DEDICATION. Published five months after the first impression. Written by Paul Brickhill (already celebrated as the author of another RAF classic 'The Dam Busters', 1951), 'Reach for the Sky' remains the best account of the legless Battle of Britain hero. It was the basis of Lewis Gilbert's hugely successful feature film (1954) starring Kenneth More in what was arguably his finest role. One of the legendary figures of the Royal Air Force, Douglas Bader was from the outset an outstanding athlete. As a cadet at Cranwell he gained his 'blues' for cricket, rugby, hockey and boxing. He represented the RAF at both cricket and rugby and would probably have been capped for England but for the accident that changed his life and created a legend. In 1931 a near-fatal air crash left him legless. Knowing that no man with such a handicap had ever walked without a stick he nevertheless found his way back to fitness playing tennis, golf and many others sports. He even flew again, until the authorities determined that a pilot without legs could not fly and discharged him from the service. With the outbreak of War he fought to be readmitted, not merely to a desk job, but back to the cockpit. Finally he was given command of a flight which quickly increased to five squadrons as the RAF realised that he was not only an outstanding pilot but an inspired leader of men and a fighter tactician almost of genius. Even as a POW his spirit was such that his captors were forced at one stage to remove his artificial limbs to prevent the chance of his escaping. Enser, p.375 (recording the first edition)

Poster no. 8 includes 9 images showing the alternative shelters when air raids happen and no nearby air defence shelter available. Alteratives suggested include basements, beneath a bridge, the corner of a wall and under solid staircases as good alternative shelters. Poster no. 10 shows 3 methods to use to fire at enemy aeroplanes each with detailed instructions. The speed and size of the aeroplane, and shooting angles and distance are all taken into consideration. A chart in the centre gives the calculations required to be prepared in advance to successfully shoot down an aeroplane. The calculations require taking into account the plane's size and distance. Poster no. 11 includes 3 images to demonstrate methods to fire at enemy paratroopers with detailed instructions. A chart in the centre gives the calculations for advance preparation taking into account the person's height and distance from the invading paratroopers. Poster no. 16 includes 6 images showing plans and actions of rescue, urgent repair, and maintance of law and order with detailed instructions. It suggests: to report to the relevant government agency and evacuate nearby civilians when unexploded bombs are discovered; during air strikes, lay down perimeters around shops to prevent from looting; to restore transportation by clearing roads immediately after air raids; to urgently repair damaged electric wires and water pipes; it gives the major patrol sites as the factory, shops, warehouses, dams, bridges and power station, and urges the viewer to arrest suspects if necessary; to put out fire immediately and to make sure the safety of the civilians is paramount. 中國人民解放軍總參謀部動員部[Mobilization Division of People's Liberation Army General Staff Department] was first formed in 1954 and later joined with 中国人民解放军总参谋部军务部 [Military Division of People's Liberation Army General Staff Department] to form a joint division in 1969. Hebrew Bible in German]. [Comprising] Die Fünf Bücher der Weisung; Bücher der Geschicte; Bücher der Kündung; Die Schriftwerke.

Koln Bei Jakob Hegner -55-58-62 1954 - Four volumes; 8vo., (18.7 x 11.5 cm), inscribed presentation set, original black cloth, paper labels, dust-wrappers, a fine set. Buber's monumental work, inscribed on front free endpaper of Die Schriftwerke volume. Martin Buber (1878-1965) was an Austrian-born Jewish philosopher, religious thinker, political activist and educator. He was a direct descendent of the prominent 16th century rabbi, Meir Katzenellenbogen, known as the Maharam of Padua, as was his cousin - cosmetics queen, Helena Rubinstein. Karl Marx is another notable relative. Born in Vienna, Buber came from a family of observant Jews, but broke with Jewish custom to pursue secular studies in philosophy. He spent most of his life in Germany and Israel, writing in German and Hebrew. In 1902 he became the editor of the weekly Die Welt - the central organ of the Zionist movement, although he later withdrew from organisational work in Zionism. In 1923, Buber wrote his famous essay on existence, Ich und Du (later translated into English as I and Thou), and in 1925, he began translating the Hebrew Bible into the German language, as exemplified here. He began this monumental work in collaboration with Franz Rosenzweig, but it was not completed until 1961, more than 30 years after Rosenzweig's death. When translating the Bible, Buber's goal was to make the German version as close to the original oral Hebrew as possible. Rather than smoothing over difficult or unclear passages, he preferred to leave them rough. One important method was to identify keywords (Leitworte) and study the linguistic relationship between the parts of the text, uncovering the repetition of word stems and same or similar sounding words. Buber also tried to ward against Platonizing tendencies by shifting from static and impersonal terms to active and personal terms. For instance, whereas kodesh had previously been translated "holy," he used the term "hallowing" to emphasize activity. Similarly, God is not the "Being" but the "Existing," and what had been rendered "Lord" became "I," "Thou" and "He." [Attributes: Soft Cover]

In the Supreme Court of the United States, October Term, 1953: No. 1, Oliver Brown, Et al., Appellants, Vs. Brief for Appellants in Nos. 1, 2 and 4 and for Respondents in No. 10 on Reargument. [New York: Supreme Printing Company, 1953]. xxxii, 235 pp. Glued pamphlet in stiff self-wrappers. Negligible light soiling to exterior, binding slightly cocked, minor wear to spine ends and corners, light toning to interior. Early owner signature, and a bit of cellotape residue, with offsetting to facing leaf, to inside front cover, underlining and notes in pencil to a few passages. A well-preserved copy overall. $1,250. * Issued by the NAACP, this is a reprint of the brief filed in the U.S. Supreme Court on November 16, 1953, in response to the Court's order to set Brown v. Board of Education down for reargument after it was unable to decide the issue. The case was reargued on December, 9-11, 1953 and decided on May 17, 1954. The Court's unanimous decision stated that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal." This landmark ruling paved the way for integration, was a major victory of the Civil Rights Movement and the model for several later cases. However, the decision did not specify ways to end racial segregation in schools. This resulted in the Court's second decision on May 31, 1955, also known as Brown II, which ordered states to desegregate "with all deliberate speed," an ambiguous order that remains a matter of debate.

        The Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis

London and New York: Cambridge University Press, 1954. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good. First Edition. vii, 605 pages. 4to. Publisher's original red cloth with gilt spine lettering and simple square embossed edge decorations on boards. Corner tips bumped, and a bit of wear to the spine panel. Foreedge of boards dinged in a few places, boards slightly warped. Endpapers foxed, and some light spotting to page edges. In Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, Series B, Volume 237, Biological Sciences, the entire volume offered. The Turing paper is found on pages 37-72. Cloth. Turing's paper has been "hugely influential" in developmental biology and was used by Turing as a pioneering application in the emerging field of Artificial Life, where computers are often used to simulate living and life-like systems. "In this paper, Turing proposed that biological pattern formation arises in response to a chemical pre-pattern...Applications of Turing's work to developmental biology are too numerous to list but include limb development, pigmentation patterning, hair and feather germ formation, tooth morphogenesis, phyllotaxis, hydra patterning and regeneration. Moreover, ideas of self-organization now abound in biology, chemistry, and ecology...his paper has significantly advanced the field and the paper is being cited almost everyday." (Cooper) "In his final years Turing worked on … Artificial Life (A-Life). The central aim of A-Life is a theoretical understanding of naturally-occurring biological life - in particular… its ability to self-organize (i.e. to develop form and structure spontaneously)... Turing was the first to use computer simulation to investigate a theory of 'morphogenesis'...he began this investigation as soon as the first Ferranti Mark I [computer] to be produced was installed at Manchester University...In June 1954, in the midst of this groundbreaking work, Turing died." (Copeland) This work is surprisingly rare in the marketplace. We are aware of a few examples, the Gandy (offprint issue) copy which sold at Christies in 2013 for nearly $20,000 (subsequently offered by the trade for as much as $38,000), and three copies sold into private collections, two through our offices. OCLC/Worldcat notes three copies of the offprint issue (ADM, QGJ, and S5B) as of this writing. An important work. References: Cooper and van Leeuwen, Alan Turing his work and impact, p684-5. Copeland and others, Alan Turing's Electronic Brain, pp 136-7.
