Junkie. Confessions of an Unredeemed Drug Addict

NY: Ace, (1953). NY: Ace. (1953). Burroughs' pseudonymous first book, a paperback original bound back-to-back with Maurice Helbrant's Narcotic Agent. Inscribed by Burroughs: "To Bob Jackson/ William S Burroughs/ for William Lee/ April 12, 1984." Junkie was a straightforward narrative of Burroughs' experiences with drugs; the publisher chose to release it couched in an anti-drug context, as a first person example of the horrors of drug use, and bound with a narcotic agent's memoir. Mild rubbing and creasing to the corners and joints; age toning to pages; very good in wrappers. Maynard & Miles A1. The beginning of one of the most influential literary careers of the second half of the 20th century. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good.

New York: Ace, 1953. First Edition. Paperback. Very good. 1st edition, first book. Wrappers, very good, finer than others called very good and some called fine. Signed on the title in ink. The pro-drug wanderings of writing's man on a wire, and heroin's model literary champion, more amusing and erudite than most autobiographies, but like almost all bios it reveals how much of life is wasted, a consistent takeaway that's harder to hide than a nagging cough.

         Casino Royale.

London Jonathan Cape 1953 - First edition, in the first issue dust-jacket without the Sunday Times review on the upper flap, 8vo., publisher's black cloth lettered in red on spine and with heart design on upper cover, dust-jacket 'devised by the author', expert restoration to top edge of upper panel, spine ends and fold corners of flaps, otherwise it now presents as a near-fine (or better) example; preserved in a custom-made slip-case. 'Connoisseurs of realistic fiction will particularly note the careful documentation fo the Secret Service background, the chilling portrait of Le Chiffre, the authentic menace of SMERSH, and the sensual appeal of the girl in ''Soi Sauvage''.' The Author. Following a spell with Reuters and then as a stockbroker in the City, Fleming joined the Navy at the outbreak of War in 1939. As personal assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence. he found the war "intensely exciting". When it was over, Lord Kemsley offered him the foreign managership of Kemsley newspapers. Fleming accepted on condition that he could have two months' holiday a year to spend at his house, Goldeneye, in Jamaica, where subsequently he did most of his writing, If his war experiences and his post-war job provided the background for his thrillers, Fleming maintained that it was his marriage to Anne, Viscountess Rothermere in 1952 that spurred him to start writing.          Philosophical Investigations.

Oxford: Basil Blackwell,, 1953. Translated by G. E. M. Anscombe. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. Parallel German–English text. With the errata slip tipped in to front pastedown. Extremities lightly rubbed, spine ends bruised, otherwise a bright, clean copy in the creased and chipped dust jacket, spine sunned with some minor loss to head and foot, joints delicate. First edition, first impression, of Wittgenstein's second philosophical masterpiece, published two years after his death. Philosophical Investigations strives to expose "fallacies in the traditional way of thinking about language, truth, thought, intentionality, and, perhaps mainly, philosophy. In this sense, it is conceived of as a therapeutic work, viewing philosophy itself as therapy" (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Raymond Monk praised Anscombe for her "most skilful and sensitive translation. It is cause for rejoicing that she will translate the material for subsequent volumes of Wittgenstein's works" (Fann, p. 213).

First editions, first issues (except Golden Gun which is in the second state binding as usual, without the gilt gun design on the front board, which proved too expensive and was dropped after the first 940 copies had been sent abroad), all in first state jackets, except Octopussy, which has the publisher's overprice sticker. The copy of Moonraker is in one of two variant states of the first impression, printed on thicker paper stock and with the word "shoot" at p. 10, l. 31 correctly printed. This is a complete set of the original sequence of James Bond novels and stories by Ian Fleming, comprising: Casino Royale (1953); Live and Let Die (1954); Moonraker (1955); Diamonds are Forever (1956); From Russia With Love (1957); Dr No (1958); Goldfinger (1959); For Your Eyes Only (1960); Thunderball (1961); The Spy Who Loved Me (1962); On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1963); You Only Live Twice (1964); The Man With the Golden Gun (1965); Octopussy and The Living Daylights (1966).
