PROKOSCH, Frederic
(Frederic Prokosch), Barcelona, 1953. First edition. Batik self-wrappers with printed paper label. 12mo. Fine. One of 44 copies, this copy unnumbered, and not noting which of the five issues this is. Inscribed by the author on the front fly with a Christmas greeting. A brief poem, one of the author's rare "butterfly books". Prokosch was an American novelist of remarkable promise who later fell under a cloud for manufacturing some spurious "rare first editions", which he did while experimenting with the handpress he used to manufacture the butterfly books. Additionally he reprinted some of the books between 1978-1980, but the provenance of this book, and the owner's notes that accompany the book indicate that it was obtained in the 1950s. His reputation has suffered despite the fact that his books were both a critical and popular success at the time of publication. *OCLC* locates four copies. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

The vinyl has not been tested. Small repair to bottom seam, else fine. The cover features a striking portrait of the musician by Burt Goldblatt. Willie "The Lion" Smith was an American jazz pianist and one of the masters of the stride style, usually grouped with James P. He was also an early influence on and longtime friend to Ellington. The well-known physician and surgeon Dr. Arthur C. Logan, was widely regarded for his support of and personal involvement in many national civil rights causes. Active in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the National Urban League and his dedication to public service was known throughout the country.  One of the first black graduates of Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, Dr. Logan acted as personal physician to many noted people, including the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Duke Ellington. [Viereck, Peter] Eliot, Alexander.
First Edition. New York, Farrar, Straus & Young, 1953. 13 cm x 21 cm. 222 pages. Original Hardcover with dustjacket in protective Mylar. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Marble coloured boards, top edge green. Personal copy of the american poet Peter Viereck, signed and inscribed with a long inscription by his father George Sylvester Viereck: „For Peter - Xmas 1953 - G.S.V. - The most startling book I've come across this side of pornography, written by a descendent of President Eliot". - Life is a fatal adventure. It can only have one end. So why not make it as far-ranging and free as possible ? - Alexander Eliot (April 28, 1919 - April 23, 2015) was an American writer born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, best known for his works on spirituality and myth. An imagistic, intense but often embarrassingly explicit story of love- both sacred and profane- wavers between ecstasy and doom and follows the private purgatory of Michael, 19, Beatrice, his sister, 16, and the incestuous emotions they entertain toward each other. Burrows, Abe (director, writer); Cole Porter (composer); Lilo, Hans Conried, Gwen Verdon, Peter Cookson (starring)
Twentieth Century-Fox, Los Angeles. Draft script for the 1953 Broadway stage musical. Working copy of an unknown cast member, with his profuse holograph pencil annotations throughout. "Can-Can" was one of the most successful musicals of the early 1950s. It ran at New York's Shubert Theatre, opening on May 7, 1953 and closing on June 25, 1955, for a total of 892 performances. Paris of the 1890s is dominated by the debauchery of Montmartre's infamous Can-Can dance halls, and a self-righteous judge aiming to shut them down (Peter Cookson) falls in love with club owner La Mome Pistache, played by French prima donna Lilo. The judge is caught while at the club attempting to gather evidence, and must choose between his work and his lover. Basis for the 1960 Academy Award winning film starring Frank Sinatra, Shirley MacLaine, and Maurice Chevalier. Set in Paris, and shot there on location. CHRISTIE, Agatha.
1953-72. Together 15 items, 1 printed book, 3 complete typescripts, 7 autograph letters signed from Christie to Gregg (most with original envelopes), menu signed by Christie and 21 cast members of The Mousetrap, a Christmas card sent from Christie to Gregg, an original playbill for The Hollow, and programme for Rule of Three. Slight rubbing to extremities, joint of The Hollow cracked but holding; a remarkably well-preserved archive. A superb collection of material, illuminating Christie's relationship with her director and producer over the course of five plays and two decades. The typescripts in particular document the process from casting to opening night in great detail, the contributions and opinions of the director and producer recorded at each point, but with little doubt as to who had the final say. Hubert Gregg (1914-2004) was one of the most steadily successful theatrical all-rounders of his generation; a broadcaster and light comedian, a Shakespearean actor, a director of comedies and thrillers, and a composer of hundreds of songs - including "Maybe It's Because I'm a Londoner" and "I'm Going to Get Lit Up When the Lights Go Up In London". He was director of five Agatha Christie plays, including The Mousetrap for seven years of its record-breaking run, from 1953 (it was first staged on 6 October 1952, directed by Peter Cotes). In his own words "three were smash hits, one had a modest run and the other was a flop". Gregg described his experiences in his book, Agatha Christie and All That Mousetrap (Kimber 1980). The archive and correspondence, spanning nearly 20 ye … [Click Below for Full Description]

Philadelphia, Valley Forge, etc, 1953. A collection of 389 homemade stereo cards each with double mounted images. Most of the cards are approximately 5" x 2.5", each holding identical black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver images that are each approximately 2.5" x 2.5". A small number, perhaps a few dozen (mostly earlier cards) are a bit smaller with cards measuring 4" x 3", with the images each 1.5" x 2.25". Additionally there are three cards each lacking one of the images, and in one case, both images are present but the card mount lacking. A modest number of images are detached or a bit loose, but mostly very nice and near fine. The majority, but not all, are captioned and/or dated. Dates range from 1934 to the latest card, dated on New Years' Day 1953 (one dated in 1930, is an an outlier or perhaps misdated). Most are between 1935-1949. A wonderful collection of almost entirely outdoor scenes centered around Fairmount Park and Wissahickon Creek, displaying a fine eye for composition. Many, perhaps a bit more than half, are of lovely and bucolic wintery scenes, including skating, cross-country skiing, a horse-drawn sleigh, winding by-ways and lanes, snow-covered trees, and many other landscapes, with multiple images of Forbidden Drive, Valley Green Inn, and the Springfield and Rex Avenue approaches. Many of the images feature individuals, most of whom are identified. A very small number (perhaps a couple of dozen) seem to be from the general vicinity of Philadelphia and its suburbs (Valley Forge, Rancocas Creek, and Princeton), along with a smattering of, we assum … [Click Below for Full Description]

Beethoven, Ludwig Van. (1770-1827) [Edmond de Coussemaker. (1805-1876)]
N. Simrock, Bonn et Cologne. Octavo. Engraved throughout. Title (v.b.); [i, ii]; 3-108 pp. [PN] 1953. Original period boards and marbled flyleaves, nicely rebacked in brown leather with gold titling. Remnants of original front wrapper remain along left edge of front gutter with some losses to t.p. itself along that side. Price on t.p. has been erased but all other points conform; presumed to have been printed as 'Prix 9 Frs'. Kinsky-Halm, 55; Hoboken 2, 122; Hirsch IV, 258. Ownership stamp in lower margin of first page of score: Bibliothèque de E. de Coussemaker. Book plate to inner front board, from the library of Percy Digby Hawker, dated by hand April 1877, with initial A., possibly for auction of Coussemaker's library that year in Brussels. The present first German edition is also the first edition of Beethoven's First Symphony as an independent work; it follows an edition printed in London 1809, in which the work was included among a collection of symphonies by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven.Dedicated to Baron Gottfried Van Swieten, an early patron of the composer, Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21 was composed at the age of 29. Fittingly, it was the dawn of a new century, and it appeared late in what scholars define as the first period of Beethoven's career, just a year or two before the crisis brought about by his gradual loss of hearing.  The premiere took place on 2 April 1800 at the K.K. Hoftheater nächst der Burg in Vienna. Most sources agree that the concert program also included Beethoven's Septet as well as a symphony by Mozart, but there is some disa … [Click Below for Full Description]

Porter, Cole. (1891-1964)
Random House, New York, 1953. First Edition of this collection of some of the greatest song lyrics ever composed, signed and inscribed in black ink on the front free endpage by the composer/lyricist to gay gossip columnist Mike Connolly: "For Mike Connolly,/ best wishes,/ Cole Porter". 8vo - 20.5 x 13.5 cm.; xxxii - 224 pp.  Hardcover, lightly rubbed in a very good dust jacket with light edgewear.  An interesting association copy. Mike Connolly (1913 - 1966) was an influential columnist for The Hollywood Reporter from 1951 to 1966 and was described by Newsweek as "probably the most influential columnist inside the movie colony," the one writer "who gets the pick of trade items, the industry rumors, the policy and casting switches." Indeed, he was a witness to, and participant, in more than a decade of sometimes tumultuous Hollywood history, and he was privy to most of Hollywood's secrets during those years. Connolly was a closeted homosexual, whose orientation was not made public until 37 years after his death with the publication of "Mike Connolly and the Manly Art of Hollywood Gossip" (2003), a biography penned by Val Holley. To be mentioned in Connolly's "Rambling Reporter" trade paper gossip column in The Hollywood Reporter delivered much-coveted status, and Connolly's coterie of influential gay friends became frequent suppliers of items about themselves. Because of his cleverness, he was able to convey a great deal of gay information in his column to those who could read between the lines.  Although Connolly's gay friends loved seeing their own names in print, they wer … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vincent York, UK, 1953. I am offering what must simply be a unique opportunity to own the complete issues of this magazine that consist of the year 1953. These magazines are in Fine condition and have been professionally bound into a digest as you can see. This has seen the pages trimmed by, roughly, 1-2 millimetres but does not affect the contents. The pages are toned along the edges due to age but the contents are clean. Inserted loosely throughout are paper cuttings from the era, relevant to dog shows and such like. For collectors of writer E. M Weale, there are tidy X marks to the margins of some issues made by her son, author Guy N Smith, that signify articles written by his mother as E M Smith and Margaret Newman Smith. Also inserted loosely is a note by Guy that confirms the articles and he has signed the from end paper of the binder. Also listed in my store is the complete year of 1952. I will accept £1000 for the pair, but no other offers: I am more than happy to retain ownership of these magazines indefinitely. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Copenhagen: International Union of Crystallography - Ejnar Mun, 1953. Bound hardback is in Fine condition with edges on one side dust part darkened and a dent at bottom spine. See photos for details. Background: In 1953 the molecular structure of the double helix, the twisted-ladder structure, of deoxyribonucleic acid (also called DNA, which controls the chemical processes in our bodies), was discovered, initially by Rosalind Franklin and her assistant Raymond Gosling in collaboration with lab head Maurice Wilkins, who made the photos and preliminary research that led to the discovery, and later that year the discovery was made public by men from a different laboratory, James Watson and Francis Crick. Crick, Watson and Wilkins were credited with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for this discovery. Franklin was never officially credited despite that it would not have happened without her work. Rosalind Franklin also published these photos months before the others in Acta Crystallographica, as can be seen in this bound version of the scientific journal that contains the first edition of that publication. A later publication on the subject by Francis Crick is also bound in. The main Franklin-related articles in question that are, among other things, included are: page 673 and on: The Structure of Sodium Thymonucleate Fibres. I. The Influence of Water Content by Rosalind E. Franklin and R.G. Gosling (received March 6, 1953) - with photos page 678 and on: The Structure of Sodium Thymonucleate Fibres. II. ROUTSONG, Alma
Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1953. First edition. Fine in attractive very good or better dustwrapper with two small nicks on the front panel and a couple of tiny tears. Author's first and seemingly autobiographical novel about the seemingly happy hetrosexual married life in the early Fifties, subtitled on the jacket as "A novel about the 'Found' Generation." Routsong, the mother of four daughters, eventually dispensed with her husband and writing under the pseudonym Isabel Miller produced the lesbian classic *A Place for Us*. The original edition was self-published in 1969 and sold by Routsong outside the meetings of the New York chapter of the Daughters of Bilitis. A later hardcover version, was published by McGraw-Hill under the new title *Patience and Sarah*. *A Gradual Joy* is exceptionally uncommon, and this is a very nice copy.
