Life With The Lyons

Np [BBC] onwards, London 1954 - Six episodes, approx. 40 mimeographed pp., secured with split pins to top left. Edgeworn and a little dusty, some title pages missing, extensive annotations and amendments throughout. First editions. Life With The Lyons was a long-running domestic comedy, scripted around real events and starring real-life husband and wife Ben Lyon and Bebe Daniels, 'Hollywood's happiest couple'. Running over eleven series between 1950 and 1961, it spawned two films and three television series, and was one of the first radio comedies to dispense with musical interludes and concentrate entirely on its cast. The Lyons, an American couple, had settled in London during the war; their first radio appearance was in Hi Gang! (1940-1949). Their children Richard and Barbara joined the cast for Life With The Lyons, and the show went on to chronicle the family's ups and downs for more than 300 episodes. The regular supporting cast was Molly Weir, Horace Percival, Hugh Morton and Doris Rogers. The six episodes offered here are: Series 4, Episode 14: Be My Valentine; Series 4, Episode 19: Go To Your Corner (lacking title page); Series 4, Episode 23: A Ghost In The House; Series 5, Episode 18: Second Honeymoon (lacking title page); Series 5, Episode 19: I Can Do It Myself; and Series 6, Episode 21: Come Back A Little, Bebe. Until recently there were just three recorded episodes of Life With The Lyons in the BBC archive. But when these three were broadcast in 2011, a private collector came forward with his own stash -- of more than 200 episodes. Thanks to Mr. Graeme Stevenson, the show is now one of the best represented radio shows from the 1950s in the BBC's holdings.

        Guignol's Band

New York: New Directions,, 1954. Translated from the French by Bernard Frechtman and Jack T. Nile. Octavo. Original grey cloth, titles to spine in dark blue. Spine a little toned, small white spot to upper board, endpapers toned. An excellent copy. From the library of Allen Ginsberg, with his ownership inscription to the front free endpaper, "Bought by HG & NC, 1954, San Jose. 1968 – AG". "NC" was, of course, Neal Cassady, who had met Ginsberg and the other Beats in New York in the 1940s and maintained close ties to them after settling in California, with Ginsberg visiting on several occasions. This volume, purchased during one such visit only a few years before Cassady's death, is the first English language edition of Celine's semi-autobiographical novel exploring the life of a French solider invalided during the First World War and living among "thieves, pimps, prostitutes, fakers, junkies, cops, and cut-throats" in London (Commentary, November 1954). It was not a success on its original publication in France in 1944, but the novel's outsider viewpoint and stream-of-consciousness style would certainly have appealed to the Beats, and it contains stylistic similarities to Kerouac's On The Road. A superb association.

1954 "Tartan" - Helix High School, La Mesa, California

La Mesa, CA: Helix High School, 1954. First Edition. First Edition. Yearbook featuring future actor Dennis Hopper in his senior year of high school. 3 photos of Hopper throughout: his senior year photo, the "Senior Play Committee," and a larger photo where he has been chosen "Most Likely to Succeed" (who edited this thing, Nostrodamus?). Hopper narrowly missed out on other desirable categories, such as "Prettiest Eyes" and "Best Groomed"; our choice would have been "Most Likely to Peep from a Closet While Huffing Nitrous Oxide." This copy belonged to a student on the yearbook staff, with several inscriptions to her in that section. Very Good condition, with some wear at the corners, moderate lean to the binding, rear hinge cracked but holding.

H.L.Mermod, (Lausanne) 1940-1954. Survival through design

A classic work on the human factor in design and the dynamic influence of design on all aspects of human behavior, with hundreds of scholar citations. "Architecture is a social art. It becomes an instrument of human fate" (p. 314). Offered from the unstated first printing is a signed presentation example made by Richard Neutra in 1954, the year of issue. The first printing had a smaller print run and was manufactured in a larger paper format with higher production values: the jacket for later printings won't properly fit it. Board sides are 219 mm and covered in two kinds and colors of cloth with an elegant decorative accent of 5 brown dots bridging the spine. The pen & bistre ink presentation is carefully handwritten on the front endpaper. Neutra has signed in his inimitable style, his graceful 'R' without a stem extending across all of Richard like an elliptical vector, his beautiful and highly expressive lettering characterized by its harmonic dynamism and refining of form. NEUTRA: known for fitting his designs to the client with reliance on extensive questionnaires, etc, once explaining (Sunset Magazine, 1943) that to measure the success of a completed building, it was necessary to study the well-being of the client in it, in particular, to observe, "how much living was enjoyed in it on an average day". "Life's needs are thoroughly interlinked but this linkage is rarely observed with care" (Survival through Design", p. 307). CONDITION DETAIL: Pages: clean and largely fresh and crisp, with only a trace indentation at the outermost fore-edge to some pages. Boards: clean and bright with lightly bumped bottom tips, trace rubs, and one white spot on the upper side. Binding: Very Good. Jacket: now in a protective transparent wrapper: clean and attractive: spine foxed with scattered adjacent fox spots, chiefly on the lower side: top edge with slight wear, principally to the crown of the spine, which has a few small vertical tears and slight loss from a few shallow chips, bottom edge with lighter wear at foot of the spine. PAGINATION: Confirmed complete, 400 pages with no illustration with 384 pages of text, some footnotes; divided into 47 chapters, summaries for each at a chapter's head. [1] leaf, front blank, ix, preliminaries including title page spread and preface, [3] pages, blank and acknowledgments, 384 pages, text, [1] leaf, rear blank. SIZE: 219 x 144 mm (8.62 x 5.67) inches. FORMAT: Publisher's brown cloth boards with cream cloth spine in its sewn binding with brown and silver letters and a decorative accent of 5 brown dots bridging the spine; the pictorial jacket with separate designs for the upper and lower sides. ADDITIONAL IMAGES: by request.

        Rotational States of Atomic Nuclei

Copenhagen: Ejnar Munksgaards Forlag, 1954. First edition. Author’s presentation copy of Aage Bohr’s doctoral dissertation. “This paper, which gives a survey of the theory of nuclear rotational states and of the experimental evidence concerning this type of nuclear excitation, is based upon studies begun during the author’s stay at Columbia University in 1949-59, and since then continued at the Institute for Theoretical Physics of the University of Copenhagen.”

& Aage Bohr (1922-2009), the son of Niels Bohr, began studying physics at the University of Copenhagen in 1940. In October 1943, he fled, with the rest of the Bohr family, to Sweden to escape the Nazi occupation. Some time later, he followed his father to England, and served during this time as his father’s secretary and assistant. In August 1945 he was able to return to Denmark, and resume his studies. He received his Ph.D. in 1954 and in 1956 became professor at the University of Copenhagen. From 1963-1970 he was director of the Niels Bohr Institute, and from 1975 he was director of NORDITA. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1975 “for the discovery of the connection between collective motion and particle motion in atomic nuclei and the development of the theory of the structure of the atomic nucleus based on this connection.” The other prize winners in that year were Ben Mottelson and James Rainwater, both of whom Aage Bohr thanked in this thesis.& 8vo (234 x 147 mm), original printed wrappers (with some very light sporring), pp. [1-7] 8-54, inscribed in pen by Aage Bohr to upper right corner of front wrapper 'Til Tante Rigmor [Adler] med autors underdanigste hilsen'.

        Songs of Innocence

Paris: Trianon Press for the William Blake Trust, 1954. Facsimile Reprint. Arnold Fawcus (1917-1979) was the legendary proprietor of the Trianon Press, whose facsimiles of Blake are widely considered the best ever produced. Shahn and Fawcus's on-again, off-again friendship began during the Shahn family's 1958 French vacation, and resulted in one legendary collaboration: the Trianon press edition of Shahn's Haggadah, issued in 1966. While the collaboration resulted in one of the finest illustrated books of the twentieth century, it also put a strain on Shahn's and Fawcus's friendship; by the end, the relationship had cooled considerably, and when Shahn eventually learned that Fawcus had sold the trade rights to the Haggadah to Boston publisher Little Brown he reputedly foreswore any further dealings with Fawcus. Octavo (22cm). Full crushed brown morocco, spine lettered in gilt; publisher's marbled paper slipcase; 31 color plates executed in collotype and stencil process. Number 491 of 800 copies for Great Britain. This copy INSCRIBED on colophon: "For Ben and Bernarda [Shahn] / With love, / Arnold," dated 1959.

        Dictionnaire intuitif *

S.David, Aix-en-Provence 5.1954.

THE YEAR THE YANKEES LOST THE PENNANT (DAMN YANKEES) (In The Original WRAPAROUND BAND and Inscribed By the Producer Of The Broadway Play)

New York: W. W. Norton, 1954. Wallop, Douglass. THE YEAR THE YANKEES LOST THE PENNANT. New York: W.W. Norton, (1954). First Edition. A FINE Copy (one tiny scratch to the front board) in a FINE and remarkably bright priced Dust Jacket (rare thus because the Yellow color of the dustwrapper usually fades to white just by staring at it too long). This particular copy also comes complete with the ORIGINAL WRAPAROUND BAND advertising the upcoming 1955 Broadway play "Damn Yankees" and which features a photo of Gwen Verdon wearing not much more than a baseball jersey and high heels. This original band (age-toned at the spine but complete) is RARE; in fact, this is the first example of it which we've seen in our decades of keeping an eye open for this first edition in collector's condition. Furthermore it is BOLDLY INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper in black ink: "I produced/ this book/ on Broadway as 'Damn Yankees'/Frederick Brisson. Really, if you're looking for THE copy of this film source for the 1958 baseball-meets-Faust film "Damn Yankees" starring Tab Hunter, Gwen Verdon and Ray Walston, stunningly choreographed by Bob Fosse, music by Adler and Ross, this is it. Famous songs: Whatever Lola Wants, You Gotta Have Heart, and a further unforgettable dozen tunes. Frederick Brisson also produced The Pajama Game and Under The Yum Yum Tree; however he is probably best known to the glitterati for being the longtime husband of Rosalind Russell (a successful marriage of thirty-five years, she died in his arms). It is hard to imagine a better opportunity to own the best copy of an iconic "Literature into Broadway musical into Successful Film" cornerstone. Fine copy, Fine DJ, exceedingly rare Wrap Band, inscribed by the Producer. .. Signed. First Edition. Fine/Fine. Illus. by Willard Mullin.
