THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (Original Heavily Revised 259pp Typescript, One of the Few Great Literary Film Noir-source Manuscripts Remaining in Private Hands)

New York: Harper Brothers, 1954 New York: Harper Brothers, 1954. Grubb, Davis. THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER. Complete original 259-page typescript with the author's extensive autograph revisions in black ink throughout. This is the manuscript used both by publisher and printer, featuring extensive editorial proof corrections in red ink. THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER was published in 1954 by Harper Brothers, became a finalist for the 1955 National Book Award, and its poetic but darkly wicked tale of a homicidal preacher remains a critical success to this day. Best known for the highly regarded 1955 Film Noir directed by Charles Laughton in his only directorial appearance and starring Robert Mitchum in arguably his greatest performance. In 1992, the film adaptation of THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER was selected by the United States Library of Congress for preservation in its National Film Registry. One of the few great literary Film Noir-source manuscripts still in private hands. Housed in a custom folding case.. Signed. First Edition. Unbound. Fine.

AMANTE DES FONTAINES. By Paul Leclère

Paris: [Chez l'auteur], 1954. Paris: [Chez l'auteur], 1954.. Small octavo. Loose signatures laid into pictorial wrappers. Fine, in lightly worn birch paper board and cloth chemise and slipcase. First edition. Illustrated with nine original engravings by Jacques Houplain. From a total edition of 101 copies (including ten copies hors commerce), this is one of only twelve deluxe copies printed on Japon Nacre, with an additional suite of the engravings on China paper (before letters, and including an additional three planches refusées), and a second suite of the engravings in their final state printed on Japon ancien, one of the original copperplates, one of the original drawings preliminary to the same etching as the copperplate, and a manuscript poem by the author. Houplain is best known for his masterful illustrations for Lautréamont's MALDOROR (1947), but his delightfully sensual engravings in this work result in a polished gem of an entirely different nature, particularly in this enhanced deluxe issue. Houplain's work as illustrator comes in for frequent praise by Strachan. MONOD 6997.

Numerous Black & White plates. Interior perfect, dustjacket one of the best I've seen, glassine wrap has a little loss to bottom edge. Flatsigned by Groebli to titlepage. More images available on request. One of the most beautiful photo books ever produced. Bertolotti- "Eroticism and narrative tension are evident is Das Auge der Liebe (The Eye of Love), by the Swiss photographer Rene Groebli. The subject of the work is love. On the cover, the woman lying on the bed with her body and face pushed into the sheets seems to have the intelligent complexity of a character in an Ingmar Bergmann film. Inside the book, once again as in a film, the scenes unfold one by one, telling the story of an amorous encounter; a woman goes upstairs, undresses, makes love, remains alone, then gets dressed again in front of the mirror. Finally she is seen sitting alone in a cafe, with the rose her partner has given her.Ó

        A Fable

New York - Random House, 1954. New York - Random House, 1954 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A first edition of this Pulitzer Prize-winning novel from American writer and Nobel Prize laureate William Cuthbert Faulkner. Faulkner spent more than a decade and tremendous effort on it, and considered it his masterpiece when it was completed. The book takes place in France during World War I and stretches through the course of one week. It tells the stories of Corporal Stephan, who is representative of Jesus. The Corporal orders 3,000 troops to disobey orders to attack in the brutally repetitive trench warfare. In return, the Germans do not attack, and the war is simply stopped when the soldiers realize that it takes two sides to fight a war. The Generalissimo has the corporal arrested and executed; he is representative of leaders who use war solely to make themselves stronger (he invites the German general over to discuss how to start the war again). Before he has him shot, the Generalissimo tries to convince the Corporal that war can never be stopped because it is the essence of humanityCondition: In a red cloth binding with unclipped dustwrapper. Externally smart, with just some minor shelfwear. Dustwrapper is quite smart, but with some edgewear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Atlanta: , 1954 Atlanta, 1954. unbound. 2 pages on "Margaret Mitchell Marsh Estate letterhead," 10.25 x 7.25 inches, Atlanta, June 11, 1954. This important and strongly-stated letter was written by Margaret Mitchell's brother, Stephens Mitchell, to the editor of "Look Magazine" to dispel a printed rumor that Mitchell had help in researching her wildly popular novel, "Gone with the Wind," in part: "...ever since the sudden success of 'Gone With the Wind,' the rumor has arisen that this or that person wrote the book, or helped with the writing or research. These rumors included even me, and Mrs. Marsh's husband...I -- and no one else, except her husband -- ever saw "Gone With the Wind" until it was in its final typescript...and no one else has any right to claim any part of it..." Natural folds; staple holes in the upper left corners, but still in very good condition.

Pictures from an Institution: A Comedy

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1954 - First edition of poet Randall Jarrell's only novel, a comedy of manners set at a progressive women's college, inspired by his experience teaching at Sarah Lawrence. "Most of the people of Benton would have swallowed a porcupine, if you had dyed its quills and called it Modern Art; they longed for men to be discovered on the moon, so that they could show that they weren't prejudiced towards moon men." The calculating character of Gertrude Johnson, a writer-in-residence on the prowl for material, was widely taken as a portrait of critic Mary McCarthy. This copy is inscribed by Jarrell to fellow scholar and professor Cleanth Brooks and his wife. One of the most important twentieth-century American critics, Brooks co-founded the Southern Review with Robert Penn Warren. He is best remembered for The Well-Wrought Urn, the key New Critical text on the reading of poetry, and for his pioneering later work on William Faulkner. Both Jarrell and Brooks were graduates of Vanderbilt, and influential teachers of poetry, although their interpretive approaches differed: as professors, they were well acquainted with the academic politics satirized in Pictures from an Institution. A near-fine copy, with an excellent literary association. Octavo, original green cloth stamped in blind and gilt, top edge stained red, original unclipped dust jacket. Small dampstain to bottom corner of front board, light rubbing to jacket, spine slightly faded. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Long Ships [Signed Advance Review Copy; Ingraverat] [Rode Orm]

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1954. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1954. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first American edition, first printing (mild toning to spine extremities, some corner bumping, a few light spots to the boards), in a Very Good dust jacket (spine toned, some moderate edge wear to the panels, some chipping to the spine ends), SIGNED [INGRAVERAT] BY FRANS G. BENGTSSON on the half-title and with the Publisher's ADVANCE REVIEW SLIP loosely laid in. Set in the tenth Century, the novel centers on Orm, son of a famous pirate who, once shanghaied the Vikings, became a noted warrior himself and took part in raids on Ireland, England, France, and Scandinavia, fighting in battles both on land and at sea. The novel also recreates the coming of Christianity to Scandinavia. Bengtsson's intent in writing the novel was, as he stated, "...to write a story that people could enjoy reading, like The Three Musketeers or the Odyssey." Originally published in Sweden, in two volumes, as "Rode Orm" (1941 and 1945), an English translation of the first volume was published in 1942 as "Red Orm". The most popular of Bengtsson's novels, and one of the most widely-read books in Sweden, the tale has been translated to at least 23 languages. The volume herein described constitutes the first full translation of the entire tale to English. The tale inspired the 1964 movie starring Richard Widmark, Sidney Poitier, and Russ Tamblyn. Signed books by Frans Bengtsson in any language are not at all common to the market and signed copies of the "The Long Ships" in English translation are absolute hen's teeth. A Very Good ADVANCE REVIEW COPY, SIGNED BY FRANS G. BENGTSSON. QUITE SCARCE.
