MARIA - ONE OF AN ESTIMATED ONE HUNDRED COPIES PRIVATELY PUBLISHED BY JOSEPH CORNELL

(CORNELL, JOSEPH). Polko, Elise & Joseph Cornell. MARIA - ONE OF AN ESTIMATED ONE HUNDRED COPIES PRIVATELY PUBLISHED BY JOSEPH CORNELL. NP. (Queens, NY).: Salamander Editions, 1954. First Edition. 12mo. Printed Wrappers with Glassine. Artist's Book. Fine./Fine.. np (12pp), 1 b&w illustration. This tiny gem of a pamphlet was self-published by Cornell in 1954 and distributed only sparingly. Quoting from Deborah Solomon's insightful biography, "Utopia Parkway: The Life and Work of Joseph Cornell" - "As he had once designed special issues of Dance Index, he now published two pamphlets devoted to two great divas. "Maria" (1954) was dedicated to Maria Malibran. And "Bel Canto Pet", done the next year, was his tribute to Giulia Grisi. Cornell printed the pamphlets at his own expense, in editions of 100, and sent them to his friends. While Cornell was a well-known balletomane, virtually nothing has been written about his interest in opera. Many of his bird boxes bear opera-related titles, and comments in his diary suggest that Cornell associated birds with stars from Opera's "golden age". Cornell's pamphlet "Maria" was almost as cryptic as his bird boxes. It doesn't even give the singer's last name. All text, no pictures, it consists of an excerpt from the German author Elise Polko and relates the story of an unnamed diva who becomes enraptured with a nightingale's song". While some of the copies given as gifts by Cornell contained hand-collaged elements or greetings from the artist, this is an exceptionally bright, flawless (save for some slight oxidation of the two staples) example in a glassine wrapper of this rarity, just as Cornell would have received it from the printer. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         Bonjour Tristesse.

Rene Julliard [1954], Paris - One of 200 copies printed hors commerce on corvol l'orgueilleux paper, for the author's use, from a total of 230 of the author's first book, inscribed by the author on the half title, "A Max Ph. Delette / avec toute sympathie / Francoise Sagan", which is after the initial March 5, 1954 printing. Small 8vo; 188pp; original tan wrappers printed in black, fine. Francoise Sagan (1935-), wrote BONJOUR TRISTESSE, her first novel when she was just nineteen. Her youth combined with the sophistication of the novel's subject matter and language caused the book to become an international literary event. Masterpieces of Women's Literature remarks, "If Sagan had deliberately set out to write the book that would bring the greatest amount of fame in the shortest amount of time, she need not have done anything differently." It was an immediate bestseller and made its author famous in France and abroad. Since its appearance, Sagan's private life, with her addiction to painkillers, her penchant for fast cars and fast driving resulting in a near fatal crash in 1957, has fascinated the French public. Her work as an author, playwright and filmmaker has won her a quiet respect among her peers. In particular, her first two novels, with their evocation of an almost existential boredom in a middle-class milieu, using the vocabulary of polite everyday speech to describe nuances of emotion, evoking an apparently simple and transparent world, deserve critical attention. Taking her name from a character in Proust's A la recherche du temps perdu (in what is a not so subtle call to attention of her style of analysis of emotion contrasted with his) and the title of her first book from a poem by Paul Eluard, Sagan sought to put herself squarely on the French literary map - and beyond. Using literature to achieve the cult status of Elvis Presley and Andy Warhol, her work is, nonetheless, a strong commentary on popular culture. Although Sagan has publicly allied herself with some feminist causes, it is her work that speaks volumes in this area. Her character, Cecile, in BONJOUR TRISTESSE, transgresses all of the societal norms for women (at that time) and set the pattern for many of her subsequent characters. Yet these characters cannot be reduced to the "vamp" stereotype. Selected by John Updike a one of The New Yorker 50, this novel also won the Prix de critiques for 1954.         Il visconte dimezzato.

Giulio Einaudi,, Torino, 1954 - In 8°, pagg. 116, (2), brochure editoriale a stampa. Furono pubblicati in totale 58 volumi. Happy Holidays

Np [BBC], London 1954 - Five episodes, c.45 pp. each, secured with split pin to top left. Variously age-toned and edgeworn, extensive markings and timings throughout most copies, some missing title pages. First editions. PRODUCER JACQUES BROWN'S COPY, WITH HIS ANNOTATIONS, AND FOUR OTHER EPISODES, EXTENSIVELY MARKED UP FOR STUDIO USE. Co-written by Jimmy 'Goon Show' Grafton, Happy Holiday starred Peter Sellers, Dennis Price, Bill Owen, Elizabeth Larner and Dick Emery. (Emery was by now a semi-regular in The Goon Show, stepping in whenever Spike Milligan's fragile health failed him). Set in the seaside resort of Littleton-on-Sea, the 45-minute show was a light-hearted sitcom with plenty of musical interludes, in which everybody played themselves except Peter Sellers, who played everybody else. The show was devised by the indefatigable Dennis Main Wilson, and ran for a single series between July and August in 1954. All copies offered here are studio copies, extensively marked up with amendments and timings. It is common for such copies to be missing the title page (as four of these are): since it carried no information of use to anyone in the recording booth, it was often discarded as surplus to requirements. Jacques Brown's copy is Episode 4 (and retains its title page); the others are Episodes 3, 10, 14, and one unnumbered.

Hard Candy. A Book of Stories

(New York): New Directions. (1954). First. First edition. Tall octavo. Some soiling and a small stain along the edge of the spine, about very good in a worn, first issue royal blue slipcase, in a custom chemise and quarter morocco clamshell case. The Dedication Copy, Inscribed by Tennessee Williams to Paul Bowles at a later date: "To Paul, for many years. Tennessee, 1962." Both Paul and Jane Bowles have Signed their names beneath the printed dedication: "For Jane and Paul Bowles." Additionally, in the upper corner of the flyleaf where Williams's inscription appears, Paul Bowles has printed: "Paul Bowles / Jane Bowles / Tangier 1954." About the time of Williams's inscription, Bowles had recently completed the musical score of Williams's play The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore. Presumably the best copy in the world. .

[Manuscript]: Operation: Outer Space. A Science Fiction Novel

New York: Otis Kline Associates, Inc. Author's and Publisher's Agents. [circa 1954]. Manuscript. 253 typed leaves (approximately - a few pages are mis-numbered), mixing both ribbon and carbon copies typed rectos only, laid into a printed folder with the name and New York City address of "Otis Kline Associates, Inc. Author's and Publisher's Agents" (aside from his work as an agent, Kline was also a published science fiction novelist). 211 of the numbered leaves constitute a complete draft, and while they exhibit typos, extensive hand corrections of both editorial and authorial nature, adding and deleting words, sentences and whole passages, these pages probably represent a close to final draft of the novel. Also present are an additional 42 numbered leaves, almost exclusively ribbon copies (and using the author's given name, Will F. Jenkins) constituting an early draft of the first two chapters. These leaves are very extensively corrected, removing and adding long passages and showing many additional corrections. The finished book, very close to the completed draft that is present here, was published by The Fantasy Press in 1954. With a fine in fine first edition is included. .

        RELIGIOUS DRAMA: Mediaeval and Modern

1954 - [1 of 300 signed copies] New York: House of Books, 1954. Original maroon cloth, with glassine wrapper. First Edition, being one of of 300 copies numbered and signed by T. S. Eliot (this being #160); there were also 26 lettered copies for presentation. The book was not published in England. The foreword mentions that~Mr. Eliot writes, "I believe this is the text of an address which I delivered to the Friends of Rochester Cathedral in 1937. It was obviously written after the production of Murder in the Cathedral, and before I had written another play. It is also obvious that it was written before I had re-read Ibsen's plays. As a result of studying Ibsen's plays, and criticising my own plays of contemporary life, I have a very much higher opinion of Ibsen than I appear to have held in 1937. In fact, I repudiate what I have here said about Ibsen.~This copy is in fine condition, without soil or wear; the delicate original glassine wrapper is also present, in very good condition (minor edge-wear and rubbing).         Bibliografia Mexicana del Siglo XVI: Catalogo Razonado de Libros Impresos en Mexico de 1539 a 1600

Fondo de Cultura Economica, Mexico City 1954 - 581 pages with facsimile imprints and index. Quarto (11" x 8 3/4") issued in half leather with gilt lettering to spine. This edition edited by A Millares Carlo. Limited to 2000 copies this is a reprint of the 1886 edition. The pride of Hispanic American scholars and collectors in the work of the sixteenth-century press of Mexico has found its reflection in a group of special bibliographies and bibliographical monographs of which one customarily speaks in superlatives. Without in any sense lessening the degree of praise accorded the other, it can be said that the greatest among them all is the Bibliografiamexicana del siglo XVI of Joaquin Garcia Icazbalceta, first published in a splendid volume in 1886. That book declared itself on every page to be one of the most distinguished bibliographical works of the century, a noble tribute to the press whose work it recorded. Its historical discussion of the origins of the press in Mexico move the whole question into the realm of scholarly speculation; its full and richly annotated entries of titles and comment upon special copies were exact as well as leisurely and easy in presentation; and its sketches of authors and others concerned in the books described attained in many instances the stature of definitive biographies. Its authority has never lessened, never been seriously impugned. I has never been supplanted, only enlarged and carried on. The Mexicans, Noclas Leon and Emilio Valton; the Chilean Jose Toribio Medina; and the North American, Henry R Wagner, have humbly and zealously followed in its train, adding here a little and there a little, or taking up for elaboration one of its partly developed special aspects, each one adding to the original work and enhancing its reputation among scholars of succeeding generations. (Review from HAHR November 1954) Condition: Jacket chipped at corners and head and heal of spine, spine sunned, lightly soiled a very good copy in like jacket.         [Manuscript]: The Scotswoman

[Indianapolis: Bobb-Merrill. 1954]. A collection of material related to the novel The Scotswoman including manuscripts and the long galleys housed in a handsome custom clamshell box. The eleventh of 16 books written by Fletcher and published in her lifetime, almost all through Bobbs-Merrill. Fletcher (1879-1969), was born in Alton, IL, and spent the first half of her adult life traveling widely with her husband, a mining engineer, through California and the Pacific Northwest. But most of her fiction was set in North Carolina, where her family was from and where she moved in 1941. Her popular Carolina Series of historical novels were noted for their meticulously researched accuracy and for bringing to light many little-known historical elements such as settlers of Oriental and Arabic origin. The Scotwoman marked a turning point in Fletcher's career as it was the first novel published after the retirement from Bobbs-Merrill of her longtime editor, David Laurance Chambers. This novel, set just before the American Revolution, involves the torn loyalties of Scottish immigrants from the Isle of Skye who support or oppose England's Hanoverian monarchy. At its center is the heroine Flora MacDonald, who once saved the life of Bonnie Prince Charlie before coming to North Carolina. MacDonald was a real historical figure and, as with most of Fletcher's works, events in the novel are based on fact. The Scotswoman was published by Bobbs-Merrill in 1954, and reprinted by Queen's House in 1978. The collection includes: 1) The author's first draft typescript Signed with holograph title page, with the original title crossed out (The Bold & The Valiant). Approximately 350 ribbon-typed leaves with holograph corrections, additions, and deletions, as well as numerous inserted holograph pages. Minute scattered soiling and creases, about fine. 2) 52 additional pages of corrections (both typed and holograph). 3) Publisher's long galleys. Approximately 375pp., 352 pages are numbered with additional inserts and expanded sections added. Slightly worn and about near fine, with extensive holograph edits including sizable deletions and handwritten additions. A fascinating archive which shows the details of this author's writing process, particularly in the absence of her longtime editor Chambers, and the work's evolution from original to finished manuscript. .

It isn't clear to us which book the Illinois manuscript dealer and Lincoln scholar Hostick gave Eisenhower, but President Eisenhower felt moved to write: "- As you point out, it is interesting and sad to note the lack of prominence given to one of the greatest utterances of all time - it is a welcome addition to the library I hope to have at Gettysburg -" The Eisenhowers had a small working farm just outside of Gettysburg, where the President retired in 1961 and where he died in 1969.         THE SAGA OF TOM HORN. THE STORY OF A CATTLEMEN'S WAR WITH PERSONAL NARRATIVES, NEWSPAPER ACCOUNTS AND OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS AND TESTIMONIES. ILLUSTRATED WITH THE PAGEANT OF PERSONALITIES.

Powder River Publishers, [1954]. - First, unexpurgated edition. Cloth, 277pp., illustrated, index. "A thorough study of the trial and execution of Tom Horn.A threatened law suit required the author and publisher to rewrite and replace seven pages of illustrations and text after the volume had been printed and bound, but before it was released. These changes were made by cutting out the deletions and tipping in new sheets. The text pages of 13 and 54 were changed as well as several of the illustrations." Horn was famous as a scout against the Apaches, fought in Arizona's Pleasant Valley War and was a Pinkerton detective before he allegedly became a hired killer of rustlers and homesteaders for the big cattlemen of Wyoming. This is the definitive work on the subject. The rare unexpurgated edition. Fine in fine dust jacket. HERD 1287. SIX GUNS 1256. ADAMS 150 92. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Haitian Art Book Signed by Artists. Office National Du Tourisme, Port-Au-Prince [Haiti]

Haiti Tourist Information Bureau New York [1954] - Quarto, original tan cloth and illustrated dustjacket featuring artwork by Wilson Bigaud, unpaginated, approx. 150 pages. Extremely rare tourism book for Haiti published in the 1950's and nicely illustrated with black and white photography, color advertisements, essays and poetry by Haitian poets, as well as color and black and white reproductions of contemporary Haitian artwork. Contributors include Jean F. Brierre, Jacques de Lacretelle, Damocles Vieux, Dantes Bellagarde, Louis Maximilien, Morisseau Leroy, Dr. Camille Lherisson, Pradel Pompilus, Andre Held, Mme Herzulie Magloire Prophete, Hector Hippolyte, W. Domond, Philomene Obin, Prefete Duffaut, Castera Bazile, Antonio Joseph, Seneque Obin, Stephane Bainet, Arthur O'Neill, and others. The book was likely owned by a visiting art enthusiast who traveled to Haiti with the motivation to have residing artists sign his tourism book. This cataloguer can only guess at what other treasures he might have returned with from his travels. This volume is wonderfully signed at front free endpaper by several of Haiti's best known contemporary artists including Wilson Bigaud, Catera Bazile, Prefete Duffaut, Gesner Abelard, Antionio Joseph, Fernand Pierre, DÕAdam Leontus, Alberoi Bazile, Gesner Armand, and others, biographies of whom may be found in any art gallery dealing in Haitian artists. The volume is also signed by DeWitt Peters, the American artist who came to Haiti in 1943 as part of an English teaching project but who became the "father" of Haitian art by establishing a school of painting in Port-au-Prince. A well preserved volume which has miraculously retained its original fragile large format dustjacket, which has sustained only small edge chips. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Shane

(London): Andre Deutsch. (1954). First. First English edition. A little foxing to the foredge and the endpapers else fine in fine dustwrapper. The author's first book, one of the best Westerns ever written, adapted into arguably the best film the genre has ever seen (with a script by A.B. Guthrie, Jr.), in which a lone gunfighter comes to the aid of a small community. Though not nominated, Alan Ladd gave an Oscar-worthy performance (Ladd left Paramount after completing this film and allegedly the studio failed to put him up for nomination as punishment). Jack Palance, despite saying only 12 lines, received an Academy Award nomination for his creepy, career-defining role. A classic which transcends the genre and can be appreciated on many levels. A nice copy of a desirable and uncommon book.

With a fine in fine first edition is included. .
