        A Fable

New York: Random House, 1954 First edition, limited issue of 1000 copies signed by Faulkner. Publisher's blue cloth, with beveled edges, three crosses double stamped in white and blue to the front board, spine lettered in white and gilt, dark blue top stain; in the publisher's original glassine dust jacket and pale slate blue paper slipcase. Book in fine condition; glassine with wear and tearing to the extremities, small loss to the panel edges, creasing to the spine tail and rear panel, still intact and without the usual toning, slipcase with some light soiling, minor toning to the spine, else fine. Overall, an excellent copy of the author's Pulitzer Prize winning novel. Written over the course of nine years from December 1944 through November 1953, A Fable is, as Random House proclaims, "The crowning achievement of William Faulkner's distinguished career." Partly based on the author's experience as a pilot during World War I, the plot is set in the trenches of France. The story takes place over the course of seven days and examines the internal conflicts each man must go through, a point which is emphasized by the parallels Faulkner draws between Corporal Stephan's struggles and the week-long Passion of Jesus Christ before his crucifixion. A Fable won both the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award.. Signed by Author. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

This leaf was item number 19 from Otto Ege's portfolio, Fifty Original Leaves from Medieval Manuscripts, which was sold by Ege's wife in 1954 (Ege died in 1951). Saint Dominic (1170-1221) was a Spanish priest and founder of the Dominican Order. From 1215 to 1217, Dominic worked to found The Order of Preachers, their charter granted by Honorius III in January 1217. Dominic founded 60 chapters in the ensuring four years, assigning younger members of the order to study at the Universities and write out Bibles like that from which this leaf was taken. These were produced in France, England and Italy; this particular leaf shows the more casual penmanship that prevailed in Italy, while it also displays the high degree of artistic standards expressed in the decorations on this leaf, typical of the French chapters.

Conservation of Isotopic Spin and Isotopic Gauge Invariance" in Physical Review 96 (1), October 1, 1954, pp. 191-196

      - RARE FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE (EINTIRE VOLUME) of the Yang-Mills quantum mechanical theory, introduced in this paper and underappreciated at that time. The Yang-Mills theory is now the foundation of most of elementary particle theory; it is the mathematical foundation underlying "three of the four fundamental forces of nature that physicists succeeded in unifying in the last half of the 20th century: electromagnetism, the 'weak force' responsible for radioactive decay, and the 'strong force' responsible for holding the nuclei of atoms together" (Gale, World of Mathematics Summary). Yang and Mills proposed a tensor equation that relies on a quantum mechanical property called the 'mass gap.' "The laws of quantum physics stand to the world of elementary particles in the way that Newton's laws of classical mechanics stand to the macroscopic world. Almost half a century ago, Yang and Mills introduced a remarkable new framework to describe elementary particles using structures that also occur in geometry. The successful use of Yang-Mills theory (now widely tested and affirmed) to describe the strong interactions of elementary particles depends on a subtle quantum mechanical property called the "mass gap:" the quantum particles have positive masses, even though the classical waves travel at the speed of light. This property has been discovered by physicists from experiment and confirmed by computer simulations, but it still has not been understood from a theoretical point of view. Progress in establishing the existence of the Yang-Mills theory and a mass gap and will require the introduction of fundamental new ideas both in physics and in mathematics" (Clay Mathematics Institute).describe elementary particles using structures that also occur in geometry.         An Archive Relating to the Career of Broadway Actress Marian Winters

Most significantly, this archive contains seven holograph letters from Tyrone Power (signed ?Tyrone?); 13 pages in total. One is dated 1954, and the others, while undated, are also from the fifties; three are on his stationery, the rest on hotel letterheads. In addition, there are two Christmas cards and one for Easter, all signed ?Tyrone.? For the most part, the letters are to both Winters and her then-husband, and these are especially warm, friendly and chatty. Winters starred with Katharine Cornell and Power in the American production of Fry?s The Dark is Light Enough (her own copy of the English first edition; with a card inscribed by Fry and with two typed pages of additions and her annotations throughout, is included, as are three programs). Writing from London, probably in 1956, He refers to his movie work, ?We started the film last Monday, & this has been a bitch of a week. I think this ?flick-making? is for the younger generation...but it?s fun to have one?s own production, & we?re a wonderful cast & a hell of a story...? Power mentions that he?ll ...?bring ?Devil?s Disciple? into town for a limited run sometime in October...? and that ?...?Duchin? [the Eddie Duchin Story] seems to be doing pretty well - it opens here on the 19th.? In this archive are three programs for the Fry play, with Cornell, Power and Winters, a Playbill signed by the cast for Nobody Loves an Albatross (in which she appeared, in 1964) and two Playbills for the Lindsay-Crouse comedy Tall Story (1959), signed by its stars, Winters, Hans Conried and Marc Connolly.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS comprising THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING [with] THE TWO TOWERS [with] THE RETURN OF THE KING. Three Volumes. First Editions

London: George Allen & Unwin Ltd., 1954-55.. First Editions. Hardcover. Good. First Edition, Second Impression of Volume One, First Edition, First Impressions of Volumes 2 & 3, Volume 3 being in the first state of the first edition. Three volumes, comprising 'The Fellowship of the Ring', 'The Two Towers' and 'The Return of the King'. Octavo, original red cloth stamped in gold on spine panels, top edges stained red, folding maps at rear of each volume. 423 + 352 + 416 pp. 2,500 copies of FELLOWSHIP were printed, 3,250 copies of THE TWO TOWERS, and 7,000 copies of THE RETURN OF THE KING (but this was spread out over several issues, of which we have the first). Condition is overall GOOD - Vol 1 is slightly cocked, the spine panel a bit faded, worn at head & heel and with a long split to the cloth along the outer rear spine hinge. Volume 2 has just trifling wear at extremities, very slight cocking to the spine and faded red top page edges; Volume 3 has some staining to the spine, faded top page edges and slight spine lean. All volumes have slightly browned endpapers, and are nearly fine internally. A good, sound set. ¶ The First Edition of the last classic. THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGS, originally issued in July, 1954, is present here in the second impression of December 1954, THE TWO TOWERS is the correct 1st printing, and THE RETURN OF THE KING is the correct first printing, first state, with undamaged text and no signature mark '4' on p. 49 There is also a variant in the last line of page 281, of which this is the version with Men spelled with no gap in the letters. In "J.R.R. Tolkien: A Descriptive Bibliography" (1993), Wayne Hammond states that this variant of page 49 is the latest issue, but this statement was based on the assumption that the damaged text would have been picked up by the printers and corrected. This was not the case - all later impressions included the damaged text, although the signature mark was removed after the second impression. Hammond noted this misinterpretation in Issue 11 of 'The Tolkien Collector'.

Das Auge der Liebe / The Eye of Love

Zurich: Turnis Verlag, (1954). Near fine in photo-illustrated wrappers, original printed glassine jacket (tiny chip to the bottom of the front panel). Lovely copy.. First Edition. Oblong quarto. Cinematic sequence of 25 images of a woman in a hotel room and in a café. While it is clear that something amorous has occurred, the absence of the woman's lover combined with the relative squalor of the room serve to amplify the melancholic nature of the event, rather than to romanticize it. (Bertolotti 148-149; Auer 350).

        ... DAVID O. SELZNICK'S PRODUCTION OF LIGHT'S DIAMOND JUBILEE ... [wrapper title]

[Culver City: Selznick Studios], 1954.. 149 leaves. Quarto. Mimeographed typescript, printed on rectos only of white, green, yellow and pink paper. Bradbound in stencil-printed wrappers. Upper wrapper a bit sunned and with small scuff, script number at top fore-corner, small nick to one edge of upper wrapper, but very good or better. A "Final Script" - though heavily revised by way of a rainbow of dated inserts - for this special anthology television special, in tribute to the anniversary of the invention of the light bulb. Hecht wrote the script, featuring adaptations from stories and other material by Steinbeck ("The Leader of the People"), Robert Benchley, Irwin Shaw, Max Shulman, Samuel Clemens, et al, interspersed with interludes and sketches relevant to the spirit of invention, scientific and technological advancement, and the challenges of the modern age. The stars included Judith Anderson, Lauren Bacall, Walter Brennan, Joseph Cotten, Helen Hayes, Robert Benchley, David Niven, Brandon De Wilde, and others, and closed with an address to the audience by the President. King Vidor directed the film sequences, William Wellman the Presidential sequence, Arthur Handley the live staged sequences, with other directors assigned to different components. The telecast was scheduled for 24 October 1954. Very scarce.

        Bonjour Tristesse

Paris: Rene Julliard. [1954]. One of 200 copies printed hors commerce on corvol l'orgueilleux paper, for the author's use, from a total of 230 of the author's first book, inscribed by the author on the half title, "A Max Ph. Delette / avec toute sympathie / Francoise Sagan", which is after the initial March 5, 1954 printing. Small 8vo; 188pp; original tan wrappers printed in black, fine. Francoise Sagan (1935-), wrote BONJOUR TRISTESSE, her first novel when she was just nineteen. Her youth combined with the sophistication of the novel's subject matter and language caused the book to become an international literary event. Masterpieces of Women's Literature remarks, "If Sagan had deliberately set out to write the book that would bring the greatest amount of fame in the shortest amount of time, she need not have done anything differently." It was an immediate bestseller and made its author famous in France and abroad. Since its appearance, Sagan's private life, with her addiction to painkillers, her penchant for fast cars and fast driving resulting in a near fatal crash in 1957, has fascinated the French public. Her work as an author, playwright and filmmaker has won her a quiet respect among her peers. In particular, her first two novels, with their evocation of an almost existential boredom in a middle-class milieu, using the vocabulary of polite everyday speech to describe nuances of emotion, evoking an apparently simple and transparent world, deserve critical attention. Taking her name from a character in Proust's A la recherche du temps perdu (in what is a not so subtle call to attention of her style of analysis of emotion contrasted with his) and the title of her first book from a poem by Paul Eluard, Sagan sought to put herself squarely on the French literary map - and beyond. Using literature to achieve the cult status of Elvis Presley and Andy Warhol, her work is, nonetheless, a strong commentary on popular culture. Although Sagan has publicly allied herself with some feminist causes, it is her work that speaks volumes in this area. Her character, Cecile, in BONJOUR TRISTESSE, transgresses all of the societal norms for women (at that time) and set the pattern for many of her subsequent characters. Yet these characters cannot be reduced to the "vamp" stereotype. Selected by John Updike a one of The New Yorker 50, this novel also won the Prix de critiques for 1954.
