[Photo Album]: Several Botany Trips by the Harvard Botany Club [hand-lettered title page]: Photographs Volume II. Summer 1954 concluded to [1955]"

1954-1955. Three-ring bound loose leaf binder. 153 mounted black-and-white photographs, most approximately 3.5" x 5", mostly fine, with a small group (perhaps ten or fewer) of commercial images of park locations. Virtually all are captioned. Internal evidence seems to indicate that American botanist, author, and photographer Sherwin Carlquist (recipient of the 1993 Asa Gray Award) was most likely the compiler of this album. The first sections consists of well-composed images of a botany trip in the West, primarily in California (Morro Bay, Carmel, Bolinas Bay, Lagunitas), Oregon (Pistol River, Brandon, Harris Beach State Park, and many other locations), and Washington (Pacific Beach, Olympia National Forest, Sekiu, Kalalock Beach, Friday Harbor). These are followed by images of trips to Long Island (only a few images), followed by images of several trips with the Harvard Botany Club to Mt. Washington (several trips), Plum Island, Horn Pond Mt., and a trip to Illinois. With few exceptions the images are devoted largely to Botany and geology. The later Harvard Botany Club's trips are well-captioned and identify several participants notable in scientific (not surprisingly botany) circles such as Robert Dressler and A.Q. Dickson. Curiously we have found mention of a second volume that was sold on (it annoys us mightily that they have been separated), but this is as we found it, and is at least interesting and can clearly stand alone. .

Féerie pour une autre fois II Normance EDITION ORIGINALE Service de presse ENVOI AUTOGRAPHE

Paris: Gallimard, 1954. Fine. Gallimard, Paris 1954, 14x21cm, broché. - First Edition, review copy. Precious autograph signed by the author Micheline (Deshayes), located and dated "Meudon 1954". Micheline Deshayes is a star dancer girlfriend Celine and Lucette Destouches for over ten years. Found about her criticism of one of his performances at the Grand Theatre de Reims in the 1956 Concert Guide: "The two stars high class dancers (...) have earned a great success especially in the prelude Liszt where Micheline Deshayes admire him finish his technique in the service of grace as sensitive as light. " Celine passion for dance and dancers born in 1915 in London Music Hall, and quickly becomes constitutive of his life as his work. On Elizabeth Craig, his wife from 1926 to 1933, the dedicatee Travel Lucette Almanzor (with whom he married in 1944), and her friend Karen Marie Jensen, the most important in the life of Celine women dancers. Celine appears regularly in his correspondence of the importance of this art form for him: "It is impossible to live without dance" and "dancing all here - Nietzsche (if overrated) was not mistaken - 'I believe that if a god dance 'if this reasoning pedant to school! " (See specifications of Herne 3 and 5). Since 1933, he composed several ballets he tried in vain to play. As H. Godard, which devotes a chapter of his biography (Gallimard, 2011, p.222-231) points out, the dance is for Celine "an existential need (...) it has the power to alleviate her suffering intimate caused by its so dark vision of man and life. " And he concludes: "Celine dancers help to bear the violence [of the world] (...) as well as those they aroused in him in return." And his pamphlet, "Trifles" is he opens the image of communion with the world of "refinement": "In a dancer's leg the world, its waves, its rhythms, its follies, its vows are registered! ... Never written! ... The more nuanced poem in the world! ... (...) The incredible poem, warm and fragile as a leg dancer moving equilibrium is online, Gutman my friend, listens to the largest secret is God (...) I do not want to work for the dancers to dance ... All ". Follow the texts of two ballets Celine: "Birth of a fairy and" Villain Paul, Virginia brave "counterweight to the violence of the narrative, dance reappears at the end of the pamphlet with a new ballet." Van Bagaden " the text of which closes the book Way of Reconciliation (impossible?) Celine with the world is through dance that expresses the terrible admission of failure of Travel. "We have a lot more music itself to dance life here "But it is also the dance that ensures the saving function of writing". text [must] be dance, stand still on the verge of death, but do not fall in "(note to one of his translators, cf. H. Godard, p. 226). The first sheet was badly cut by the dedicatee that caused slight marginal gaps without gravity, ex-dono dedicatee of the head of the half-title page. Rare and valuable autograph signed by Louis-Ferdinand Céline a dancer who always showed his friendship despite his insults. (References: Henri Godard, Céline, Gallimard, 2011; Jacques Lecarme Images of the League and in tasks Céline In Cohen Albert Cohen in his century: proceedings of the international symposium Cerisy-Hall.) --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! The Lord of the Rings, 1st UK Edition, 1st Impressions with Original Dustjackets, and a Full Leather Custom Slipcase

London: Allen & Unwin, 1954. 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings. Original Cloth. Very Good Plus/Very Good. J.R.R. Tolkien. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. George Allen & Unwin, published in 1954, 1954, and 1955, the 1st UK Edition, all are First impressions. The Fellowship of the Ring, one of 1500 copies printed on July 29th, 1954, a First Impression. The Two Towers is a First impression, one of 2250 copies published November 11th, 1954. The Return of the King is a 1st impression published October 20th, 1955. This copy is the 1st State, as per Hammon & Anderson, with the signature mark '4' and having the slipped type on page 49. Correspondence with Wayne Hammond has indicated he has revised his original definition of the 1st state, from what was described in the Tolkien Bibliography, making this the later state. All original maps are present and in Near Fine condition, no tears or extra folds. All three books are in their original dustjackets, showing a modest amount of soiling along with a bit of tanning to the spines and a slight bit of fading to the red lettering on the spines. A small amount of chips or loss to the fold and spine tips of The Two Towers and The Return of the King the only faults noted. The dustjacket of The Fellowship is price clipped, the other two are not. The Fellowship has had some conservation and restoration to repair and strenghten the folds of the dustjacket, which were starting to split. No major infill, mainly just to strengthen the flap and spine fold areas, and to stop any further splitting. The other two dustjackets are untouched, with minor rubbing and a small bit of loss to a few area's, mostly around the folds. The Fellowship has a previous owners name to the front free endpaper, no other markings or writing, to any of the books. The front endpapers show a light amount of offsetting on all three books. The text blocks are all clean, bright and tight, without any internal foxing or markings. The gilt is slightly dulled but untarnished on the Two Towers, while the Fellowship and Return are clean and bright. The boards are very clean and unmarked, with very light shelf wear on the bottom edge, A couple of lightly bumped corners and a minor scuff to the boards of the Fellowship, the only minor faults. A fantastic set of First Editions of this classic of fantasy literature, with a custom full leather slipcase, to protect and house these 'precious' books. Any questions, please feel free to ask. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Very Good Plus / Very Good.

        Jonathan Troy

New York: Dodd Mead, 1954. First Edition. Hardcover. 8vo. 374pp. Black cloth boards with title stamped in yellow on spine in pictorial dust jacket. Very good/Very good. Minor wear and nicking to the extremities of the jacket. Name faintly stamped in ink (small) at the head of the front free endsheet with the short ink notation "Copy 1" Two small discoloration (tape?) at the head and foot of the front and rear free endsheets. Overal a nice copy of this uncommon work. Author's first work. Abbey himself described this early novel as "bad Thomas Wolfe" and was embarrassed by it almost as soon as it was published. Although Jonathan Troy is perhaps a failed novel, and one the author refused to ever let be reprinted, the seeds and germination of everything Abbey would become throughout his literary career and personal life are contained within the pages of Troy. The anarchist, the wobbly, the classic music loving, flute playing hedonist, pagan and wilderness lover.

The Fellowship of the Ring. Being the First Part of The Lord of the Rings. SECOND IMPRESSION OF THE FELLOWSHIP; 2500 COPIES WERE PRINTED

Allen & Unwin [1954] 8vo., Second Impression, on laid paper, with a large folding map in red and black, neat contemporary inscription on front free endpaper; original red cloth, gilt back, red top (lightly faded as usual), a very good, bright, clean copy. Published in December 1954, five months after the first edition. 2500 COPIES WERE PRINTED (as against 3000 of the first edition). BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY OF THE SECOND IMPRESSION OF THE FIRST PART OF THE LORD OF THE RINGS. The request for reprint after so short a time took the printer Jarrolds by surprise, for against instruction they had allowed the type of the first edition to be dispersed. This second impression had therefore to be reset swiftly to meet demand, and Tolkien was not asked to read a new proof. As a result, although four corrections were made to the text of the first edition, many new errors were introduced, several of which remained in place for many years. VERY SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. Hammond, p.97.

The Two Towers is a 1st impression published 1955, at only 1000 copies, the scarcest of all the original 1st edition 1 impression books. The Return of the King is a 1st impression dated 1956, 1st State with signature mark '4' and the infamous slipped type. All original maps (1st State) are present and in Near Fine condition. An extraordinary set of first editions of this classic of fantasy literature.

The Lord of the Rings, 1st UK Edition, 1st Impressions with Original Dustjackets, Leather Slipcase

London: Allen & Unwin, 1954. 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings. Original Cloth. Very Good Plus/Very Good. J.R.R. Tolkien. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. George Allen & Unwin, published in 1954, 1954, and 1955, the 1st UK Edition, 1st impressions. The Fellowship of the Ring is a 1st impression published July 29th, 1954. One of 1500 printed for the UK. The Two Towers is a 1st impression published November 11th, 1954. One of 2250 printed for the UK. The Return of the King is a 1st impression published October 20th, 1955. This copy is the later state, with the signature mark '4' and having the 'slipped' type on page 49. Correspondence with Wayne Hammond has indicated he has revised his original definition of the 1st state, from what was described in the Tolkien Bibliography, which is the same as this copy, but now this is considered the later state. All original maps are present and in Near Fine condition, no tears noted, but the Fellowship shows some misfolds. Both the Fellowship and The Two Towers have the 1st state point map with the red dot off the coast of Umbar. The books show some only the lightest bit of soiling with the boards showing clean and bright. Gilt titles, author and publisher are still bright though slightly tarnished, some light rubbing to the edges, one bumped corner to the Return of the King. A little rubbing and shelfwear to the bottom of the boards, with the spine tips a little pushed and rubbed as well. All three books are in their original dustjackets, which are not price-clipped. The dustjackets are all moderately soiled, with some tanning and fading to the red lettering on the spines. The red topstain is clean and unfaded on The Fellowship and The Return, while the Two Towers shows some fading. Previous owners name to the front free endpaper of The Fellowship and The Two Towers, no other writing in any of the books. The endpapers show a moderate amount of offsetting on the The Fellowship and Return of the King, with no offsetting to the Two Towers. No foxing noted in any of the books. The dustjackets are not price clipped, and they show some minor loss to the edges, mostly to the flap folds and spine tips. They have a number of small closed tears to the edges, the largest to the top of the spine area on the Two Towers, effecting the 'J.R.' of the authors name. No repairs or restoration to these original dustjackets, completely unsophisticated. The text blocks are all clean and bright, without any internal foxing or markings. A highly sought after set of first editions of this classic of fantasy literature. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Very Good Plus / Very Good.

Priced to the front flap ($2.75) but with both corners clipped, as was the publisher's method.

Dickson. Curiously we have found mention of a second volume that was sold on (it annoys us mightily that they have been separated), but this is as we found it, and is at least interesting and can clearly stand alone. .
