[The Lord of the Rings trilogy:]

London: George Allen and Unwin,, 1954?5. The Fellowship of the Ring; The Two Towers; The Return of the King. 3 volumes, octavo. Finely bound in red morocco, titles and decoration to spines gilt, raised bands, single rule to boards gilt, twin rule to turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Each volume has a map illustrated by the author. A fine set. First editions, first impressions, the Lord of the Rings in first state with signature mark "4" present on p. 49. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the most influential literary works of the century. Its first reception was mixed: favourable and perceptive reviews from C. S. Lewis and from W. H. Auden, who had attended Tolkien's Oxford lectures, were countered by others who were hostile, sometimes bitterly so. But the trilogy went on to astonishing sales and forged a major change in public literary taste. "Heroic fantasy" has since become one of the most commercially successful literary genres, having a transforming impact upon the entertainment industry, from electronic games to movies.

The Worship of Love: A Study of Nature Worship Throughout the World [Signed by Longworth; Signed by George Seferis]

London: Torchstream Books, 1954. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/very good +. An about Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original dark brown cloth (mildly canted, some pushing at the spine ends and board corners, bare traces of wear, a bit of wrinkling to the first plate, spine label sharp and crisp), in a Very Good + example of the scarce dust jacket which matches the free endpapers and pastedowns (small chips with tears at the spine panel's upper corners, tape repairs to the inside of the jacket, tiny wear at upper panel corner turns to the spine flaps, mild wear and tiny chip to the spine label that does not affect the lettering, portions of some signatures are unopened); copy 298 from a Limited Edition of 975 copies, SIGNED BY T. CLIFTON LONGWORTH on the title page and FURTHER SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS on the front free endpaper to British author Rex Warner, his friend and the translator of some of Seferis' works. The front free endpaper also shows a single line in Greek which is underscored and under which has been drawn a series of arrows. Translated to English, the line, presumably written by Seferis or Longworth, appears to read "worship of sensual love on island of Cyprus" or "praise to worship of love on Cyprus". T. Clifton Longworth was deeply interested in the origins of religious belief and wrote extensively on the topic. In his studies of both ancient religions and present day tribal religions, Longworth determined the worship of love, that is, the adoration of reproductive organs as the symbol of the creative power, to be a common theme, running through the very first religions and constituting the first and most universal form of religious expression. This book presents an extensive study of the topic and, notably, the half-title carries the following printed statement: "The sale of this book is restricted to members of the Medical and Legal Professions, Anthropologists, Psychologists, Sociologists, Ethnologists and Students of Comparative Religion". In his research, Longworth visited Cyprus where he viewed the the sacred Cone of Aphrodite. He discusses it and the marvelous Greek statuary that evolved from it in his Introduction and in the book's first Chapter. George Seferis, a Greek Diplomat and Ambassador to the UK, and one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, was the first Greek ever to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. Both he and British author Rex Warner - to whom Seferis presumably presented the book - were deeply interested in all things related to Cyprus, thus explaining both the giving of the book by Seferis to Warner and the single line written by under Seferis's signature. Copies of Longworth's books signed by him are quite scarce (this Limited Edition was not called to be signed), as are books signed by George Seferis. This copy, of course, carries both signatures and also constitutes a nice association between two noted authors, the Nobel Laureate George Seferis and the noted author and translator Rex Warner. RARE.

        Horton Hears A Who!

New York: Random House, 1954. First edition. Quarto, original boards. Near fine in a very good price-clipped second issue dust jacket. Inscribed by the author on the verso of the front free endpaper, "For Greg Barrett with best wishes Dr. Seuss. Dr. Seuss began work on Horton Hears a Who! in the fall of 1953. The book's main theme, "a person's a person no matter how small", was Geisel's reaction to his visit to Japan, where the importance of the individual was an exciting new concept. Geisel, who had harbored strong anti-Japan sentiments before and during World War II, changed his views dramatically after the war and used this book as an allegory for the American post-war occupation of the country. It was adapted to film in 2008, the cast included Jim Carrey and Steve Carell.

        Henry and Ribsy

William Morrow & Company, New York 1954 - The first printing of the third "Henry Huggins" book by Beverly Cleary, seemingly scarce in the marketplace in a dust jacket. Beverly Cleary (b. 1916 - as of this writing, she had just celebrated her 100th birthday) is one of America's most successful children's authors, with 91 million copies of her books having sold. She has been recognized with numerous awards and has been an extremely influential children's author, with a gift for creating characters with whom young children could identify. Henry Huggins was first introduced in 1950 with a book of the same name; the second book in the series was Henry and Beezus, published in 1952. This volume, Henry and Ribsy, published in 1954, shows Henry and his dog Ribsy trying their best to stay out of trouble so that Henry's father would take them salmon fishing - all, of course, to no avail. With illustrations by Louis Darling (1916-1970), who illustrated many of Beverly Cleary's books as well as Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring". ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in bright red cloth, a vignette on the lower half of the front board of Henry riding a bicycle with Ribsy sitting in a box behind him, looking backward, black lettering on the spine, plain endpapers, title page has a different vignetter of Henry sitting with Ribsy above the title, illustrations scattered throughout the text; octavo size (approx. 8" tall), pagination: (1)-192. The pictorial dust jacket in yellow, red and black has the original price of $2.50 on the front flap, a summary of the book on both flaps, with the back panel being publisher's ads for other titles by the same author. ***CONDITION: Volume is near fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, straight corners without rubbing, the black vignetter and spine lettering are crisp and sharp, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; the head and tail of the spine are lightly bumped and there are several very shallow bumps to the top edge of the front board, else fine. The unclipped dust jacket is, alas, good only; there is a short (approx. 2") closed tear at the head of the spine where is meets the back panel with a very small (approx. one-third inch) chip and a triangular hole in the back panel approx. one-quarter inch per side with some staining on either side, and some light overall edgewear. ***CITATION: Baumgarten, Author pg. 45. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the Abe standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
