        Profile of America

1954 - (LINDBERGH, Charles A.) DAVIE, Emily, editor. Profile of America. New York: Thomas Y. Crowell, (1954). Quarto, original red cloth, original dust jacket. $1500.First edition of this profusely illustrated "Autobiography of the U.S.A," inscribed in the year of publication by Charles A. Lindbergh (who wrote the foreword): "To James T. Babb With appreciation and best wishes from Charles A. Lindbergh 1954." The recipient James Babb was the head librarian at Yale. "The book, an illustrated history of the United States, [is] a compilation of writing by Americans like Thoreau and Jefferson. It was critically acclaimed and a best seller. But Congress refused to appropriate money for the United States Information Agency to purchase the book for its libraries abroad after a House appropriations subcommittee objected to the work on the basis of pictures that showed a rural schoolhouse and a plain-looking schoolteacher. The action created a furor in newspapers and magazines. 'What kind of puerility is this?' asked an editorial in The New York Times. 'Is Congress to pass on every book, to censor every publication?'". [Editor Emily Davie] was a granddaughter of a founder of the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey. She ".appeared on the stage on Broadway and at the Old Vic in London" (New York Times, April 23, 1989 obituary). Book fine, light wear to extremities of dust jacket.         To Ariadne (deserted by Theseus)' and 'Eve Describes Her Birthday Party' - original Plath typescripts with autograph amendments to latter

, 0. Two original single-sheet typescripts by Sylvia Plath, unsigned, the first-named containing 20 lines in five stanzas dated 6/10/49 with her typed name above, composed when she was 16, the second a carbon having 14 lines with Plath's revisions in her own hand to lines 4 and 12, in line 4 replacing the typed words 'the windy jargon' with her handwritten 'wrangling jargon', adding the words 'seraphic spheres' instead of the typed 'angelic wars' (having also written 'disharmony of spheres' but then seemingly crossed it out), while in line 12 replacing the typed words 'pierced the' with 'plunged though the'. At the top of this sheet are the typed words Sylvia Plath/Lawrence House/Smith College/Northampton, Massachusetts, and although the poem is undated it was written c.1954-5, after her abortive suicide attempt. Each poem is marked 1 and 26, respectively, in pencil at the top corner. These poems were originally sold by Sothebys in 1982 as part of the Sylvia Plath estate. Interestingly, 'Eve Describes...' has different alterations from the two typescripts held by the Lilly Library, Indiana University.

Shot, struck, and mounted by the film's still photographer, Bob Willoughby, with his ASMP rubber stamp and holograph notations on the verso. Full provenance available. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, Willoughby began working as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. It was while on assignment covering Judy Garland in a "A Star is Born" that Willoughby's ability to capture his subjects' spontaneity, humor, and vulnerability, resulting in images that were far different from more traditional film stills, came to Hollywood's attention and earned him his first "Life" magazine cover. Willoughby spent the next 20-plus years working as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Technically and stylistically innovative, Willoughby built the first remote radio-controlled cameras used on film sets, pioneered the use of the "silent blimp" for 35mm cameras, and created brackets to mount his cameras directly over the movie cameras to capture the same images. Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s, though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. The stills in this collection were given by Willoughby to friends in Kilbrittain, Ireland just prior to his move to Vence, France in 1989, where he would remain until his death in 2009. Perhaps more than any other photographer, Willoughby is responsible for creating the the look of mid-century celebrity and moviemaking in the popular imagination, with his images printed in magazines literally every week of his career. But beyond being prolific, Willoughby's legacy rests with his ability capture the essence of the actors he photographed, as well as the films with which those photographs were associated. As Sydney Pollack said in his introduction to Willoughby's autobiography, "Sometimes a filmmaker gets a look at a photograph taken on his own set and sees the 'soul' of his film in one still photograph. It's rare, but it happens. It happened to me in 1969, the first time I looked at the work of Bob Willoughby during the filming of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums, including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Tate Modern. 10.25 x 12.5 inches (26 x 32 cm). Near Fine, with light creasing to the corners. National Film Registry. Hirschhorn, p. 342.

Publisher's original burgundy cloth, with three cross illustrations stamped in blind and black to the front board, light pink and metallic silver lettering to the spine; original dust jacket designed by Riki Levinson. Petersen A37.2b Written over the course of nine years from December 1944 through November 1953, A Fable is, as Random House proclaims, "the crowning achievement of William Faulkner's distinguished career." Partly based on the author's experience as a pilot during World War I, the plot is set in the trenches of France. The story takes place over the course of seven days and examines the internal conflicts each man must go through, a point which is emphasized by the parallels Faulkner draws between Corporal Stephan's struggles and the week-long Passion of Jesus Christ before his crucifixion. A Fable won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award.. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Autograph Letter Signed By Harry S. Truman to Dean Acheson.

Kansas City, Missouri 1954 - Autograph letter signed by Harry S. Truman to Dean Acheson. Five pages, with 2 page transcription of Acheson's 19 October response Truman recounts his near death from an infected gall bladder that required emergency, life-saving surgery, and reflects on his changing popular reputation. "Went to our outdoor theater [on June 19] in Swope Park to see 'Call Me Madam,' which I've never seen (and don't want to)." Truman, in fact, was going to appear in a cameo at the end of the play. But he never made it. While waiting to come on "A pain overtook me which I couldn't stop with all the will power I could exercise and the 'Boss' drove me home." Admitted into the hospital, the "Doc told me that the white corpuscles were increasing at the rate of 1000 an hour and that a little butchering would be necessary. I wrote a codicil to my will and went out - I mean out. They gave me about five or ten gallons of anti-biotics by sticking needles in veins. But they just couldn't kill me." His wife Bess "says I'm worse than a Bridge Club Lady--talk about my operation and bore people to death." He also talks about the difficult task of getting his memoirs published, with an impatient publisher waiting for the promised 300,000 words by the spring of 1954. But the hospital was flooded with flowers during his convalescence and Truman was touched by the genuine concerns expressed for "this still controversial former President." No one, he tells Acheson, "knew the travails of what we went through in those years from Apr. 12, 1945 to Jan. 20, 1953 as did you, Gen. Marshall, [Treasury Secretary] John Snyder and [Secretary of Agriculture] Charlie Brannan." A lengthy, revealing letter about Truman's near death experience. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Longes mac n-Usnig: Being the Exile and Death of the Sons of Usnech

(Dublin): Dolmen Press, 1954. Cranwill, Mia. Tall octavo. 32pp. One of 225 copies. Printed in black with red initials and with a decorative title-page spread, two full-page illustrations, and six pictorial headpieces by Mia Cranwill. The tragic myth of Deirdre and the sons of Usnech, who were slain by the jealous Conchobor, translated into English from the Irish text found in the Book of Leinster. The woodcut illustrations capture the heroine's desolation amidst a romantic Irish setting, with elaborately decorated borders and backgrounds framing the depictions of love found and lost. The image of Dierdre reaching toward the far horizon extends onto the boards, which are covered in paper printed with a repeating version of the woodcut. The boards are backed in white paper and protected with a glassine wrapper. Glassine shows some chipping and loss to edges, with a three-inch closed tear extending from the spine; otherwise, the book is in fine condition.
