        Casino Royale.

Jonathan Cape, London 1953 - First edition. Octavo, original black cloth. Light dampstaining to a few of the back pages, near fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket with a few small closed tears and light wear. Casino Royale was written by Ian Fleming in Jamaica over a period of around two months, largely from his own experiences and imagination; he also devised the artwork for the cover. "Within the first few pages Fleming had introduced most of Bond's idiosyncrasies and trademarks, which included his looks, his Bentley and his smoking and drinking habits. The full details of Bond's martini were kept until chapter seven of the book and Bond eventually named it "The Vesper", after Vesper Lynd" (Andrew Lycett). It has been filmed twice as a feature film, the first being the 1967 spoof starring David Niven, and later as the twenty-first official Bond film starring Daniel Craig as James Bond.         Medical Jurisprudence and Toxicology.

Edinburgh and London: E. & S. Livingstone Ltd.,, 1953. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in silver. With the dust jacket. 234 photographs to the text of which 88 in colour. A fine copy in the very gently spine-sunned dust jacket. Ninth edition, revised reprint. Presentation copy, inscribed by the original author's son and academic successor, also named John, "To Erle Stanley Gardner. With grateful appreciation of his sustained kindnesses. John Glaister. 17th February, 1953". Originally published in 1902, "Glaister's was the first British textbook to use photographic evidence to illustrate violent death and other aspects of forensic medicine, each further edition amplified by his latest cases. In court his textbook was often quoted back at him by defence counsels, notably the eminent Craigie Aitchison" (ODNB). It went through five editions before his death in 1932, with further editions produced by his son, who had succeeded him to the Regius Chair of Forensic Medicine at the University of Glasgow. "One of the biggest fans of Glaister's monumental treatise was the American crime novelist Erle Stanley Gardner, who regularly scoured its pages for plot ideas, background research, and fact checking. In 1964 Gardner repaid the debt in some measure by dedicating his book 'The Case of Horrified Heirs' - loosely based on the Buck Ruxton case - to the eminent scientist" (Evans, Murder Two: The Second Casebook of Forensic Detection, p. 93). Gardner in fact went as far to identify Glaister as the direct inspiration for criminal defence lawyer Perry Mason, the creation upon whom his reputation rests: a superb association.

The Form and Order of the Service that is to be Performed and the Ceremonies that are to be Observed in the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in the Abbey Church of St. Peter Westminster on Tuesday the Second Day of June 1953

Worcester, MA: Achille J. St. Onge, 1953. 77pp. One of 2,000 copies. Printed at the Chiswick Press in red and black type. With a black & white frontispiece portrait of the Queen. In an understated yet opulent jeweled designer binding by Samuel Feinstein, studded with pearls, garnets, and sapphires. The design was inspired by the jeweled bindings of Sangorski & Sutcliffe, who bound the regular edition of this miniature. The stones were chosen to reflect the colors of the rubies, diamonds, and sapphires of the "Wedding Ring of England." The book is bound in full red goatskin, with navy leather onlays and 23.5K gold leaf. A device is gilt-stamped in the center of each cover, surrounded by sapphires: a crown to the front, as on the original Sangorski & Sutcliffe binding, and a dove to the back, as a symbol of rebirth and peace, and to reference the "Sceptre with the Dove" bestowed upon the Queen during the Coronation. Behind the central device is a diamond pattern inspired by the Queen's Coronation gown. In each corner, a garnet rises as a red flower, bright against a gold background. Floral sprays, alluding to wheat and olive branches for prosperity and peace, climb across blue leather panels scattered with red leather Tudor rose onlays adorned with pearls at their centers. The Tudor rose motif is repeated on the spine, onlaid in blue between the raised bands. The elegance of the binding is continued in the interior. Blue leather doublures with red turn-ins are decorated with gilt ruling and onlays. In the corners are barbed quatrefoils, the pattern used for the original endpapers. A gilt-stamped starburst radiates from the center of the doublure amidst a pattern of Maltese crosses to represent religion. Gold text in the surrounding frames of the doublures reads "Prosperity, Peace, Equity, Mercy, Sincerity, Chivalry, Wisdom," for the themes of the Coronation and the properties represented by the Crown Jewels. The rear doublure reads "I pledge my life to the service of our people." The front flyleaf has a gilt-stamped quote from a speech made by Queen Elizabeth II later that day: "This, my Coronation, is not the symbol of a power and a splendour that are gone but of a declaration of our hopes for the future, and for the years I may, by God's grace and mercy, be given to reign and serve you as your Queen." All edges were re-gilt, and gauffered and painted with a floral design. Housed in a rounded-spine clamshell box of navy leather. The original binding, protected by a four-flap enclosure, is held in a compartment underneath the new binding. Every element of this resplendent binding was thoughtfully designed and artfully crafted. Feinstin, a Chicago-based designer bookbinder, studied with Jeff Altepeter and Monique Lallier during his time at the North Bennet Street School. His work was featured at the 2012 DeGolyer Triennial Exhibition and Competition for American Bookbinding, and at the annual juried competition of the Guild of Book Workers. An exquisite binding on one of St. Onge's finest productions. (Massmann 10; Bradbury, p. 252). (2 7/8 by 2; 72x53mm).

1953 THREE SCARCE WILLIAM SAROYAN DRAFT SCREENPLAYS of THE WAYWARD BUS by JOHN STEINBECK housed in a Custom Clamshell Case

1953. THREE ORIGINAL SCREENPLAYS by WILLIAM SAROYAN based on THE WAYWARD BUS by JOHN STEINBECK. Three Mimeographed Screenplay Drafts in Printed "Chas. K. Feldman Group Productions" wrappers, inner pages 3-hole punched at the left side, bound with 3 brass brads, 8.5x11" paper, two of the drafts are printed on white paper, one on yellow paper, pages printed on one side only, 155 pages, 172 pages and 150 pages. In a Custom Made Clamshell Box that has a leather spine and marbled paper inner lining. The back of the spine is titled in gilt "THE WAYWARD BUS". One screenplay draft, the one printed on yellow paper, is dated 6/17/54 - 6/18/54, with one or the other of those dates typed at the top of some of the pages. Another draft is undated, and another is dated July 13, 1953, in pencil on the title page. The un-dated script has A FULL PAGE OF HANDWRITTEN NOTES & CORRECTIONS written on the blank backside of the last page. Though unsigned, these manuscript notes are likely in SAROYAN'S HAND. Peter Howard (see more information about Peter below), who was very familiar with Saroyan autograph material, claimed that the writing was Saroyan's, and it certainly appears to be Saroyan's handwriting to me, but the writing may very well be by an unknown (to me) reader who Saroyan relied on for editorial comments. I do not know for certain whose hand the notes are in. I have provided a quality image of the page of notes for your determination. Two of the scripts have a number of hand corrections, changes and marks; these also appear to be in the hand of Saroyan, but they may be by another hand entirely. These 3 Saroyan / Steinbeck Screenplay Drafts were All Owned by CHARLES K. FELDMAN GROUP PRODUCTIONS, with His Company's Printed Wrappers holding each Saroyan Screenplay Draft. Provenance of the late PETER HOWARD, ABAA, owner of the now gone SERENDIPITY BOOKS, Berkeley, California. PETER acquired a large collection of items by William Saroyan, a writer he greatly admired. Much of the material was sold and/or donated by Peter to Stanford University and to the William Saroyan trust. This group of 3 Saroyan Scripts was Priced by the PETER HOWARD,at $25,000: Laid-in the clamshell box, on top of the scripts, is a note in Peter Howard's hand, pricing the set of scripts at $25,000 (those of you familiar with Peter's pricing and his codes will recognize his marks and price); Peter's $25,000 price and code, along with a few relevant notes, are also written, in pencil, on the title page of one of the drafts. Peter believed that these Screenplays by Saroyan were among his most difficult items to find. Condition: All the manuscripts have some toning, signs of handling (thumbing), a few tape remnants to inner pages, and covers that have some writing, stamps and edgewear (one cover has remnants of a large label of some sort). Some of the inner pages have relevant handwritten notes, marks and dates. Overall VERY GOOD condition, tight, bright and clean. The clamshell case is in NEAR FINE condition, solid and lovely, just a touch of wear to the leather edges. How these scripts came into being: ******In 1952 Hollywood Super-Agent turned Film-Producer Charlie Feldman bought the rights to JOHN STEINBECK'S 1947 novel, THE WAYWARD BUS, and hired playwright and novelist WILLIAM SAROYAN to adapt it for the screen. Saroyan makes a valiant effort in these three drafts, but in 1955 Feldman gave up and sold the film rights to Twentieth Century Fox, who hired Ivan Moffat to pen the script.****** About the FILM: ******When the film finally came out in May 1957, it was a critical and commercial failure. The screenplay by Ivan Moffat was considered a hatchet-job at best (the producers should have stuck with Saroyan!). The film was never officially released on DVD because Steinbeck's widow bought back the rights and refuses to let it be released because Steinbeck was greatly displeased with the final result.****** Very Good

[12 leaves from: Statuta synodalia herbipolensia].[Würzburg, Georg Reyser, ca. 1486]. Folio. Printed in red and black in rotunda type (32 lines; printed area: 18 x 12 cm; type: 112a). With illustrations cut from 19th- or 20th-century reproductions of early woodcuts (ca. 21 x 14 cm) pasted on the front (Annunciation) and back pastedown (Christophorus, with the year "cccc xx tercio").. Later bound in two leaves from a 13th-century vellum theological manuscript, rubricated and decorated with alternating red and blue initials with penwork.

Cf. BMC II, 572; Goff S-741; Hain 15036; Hubay, Inc. Universitätsbibl. Würzburg, 1953; ISTC is00741000. Interesting example of the study of early printing in 19th-century England. The 12 leaves come from the library of the 19th-century collector Dr C. Inglis, whose father boasted an impressive collection of early printed books. Inglis believed that the leaves came from an unknown work titled De vita et honestate clericorum ex consilio Moguntinum, printed in 1453 by Gerhardus Episcopus. Tipped in is a letter to Inglis by the well-known bibliographer William Blades discussing this matter. Although the text opens with "De Vita et honestate clericorum ex consilio Maguntinensis Gerhardi Archiepiscipi", it was in fact part of Statuta synodalia herbipolensia, printed at Würzburg by Georg Reyser in ca. 1486. The first 6 leaves are [2]-[d]7 and the final 6 leaves are quire [g].With owner's inscription of Sir Edward Coates, bookplate with initials "CC" (Clifford Coates), the bookplate of Dr. C. Inglis, and some annotations on front pastedown; an autograph letter signed by Wiliam Blades to C. Inglis tipped to flyleaf. 12 well-preserved leaves.

Eisenhower? as President. After completing and signing his inscription, before he presented the photograph to Heller, Eisenhower added ? ?" warm personal / regard and? with a different pen. The President had most likely reminded himself that he had personally met and spoken with Congressman Heller at an informal White House luncheon on May 12, 1953. Sepiatone, 8? x 10?. Mounting remnants on verso. Fine condition. Prominent Jewish leader Louis Benjamin Heller (1905-1993) represented Brooklyn in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1949 until he resigned on July 21, 1954, sixteen months after Eisenhower?s inauguration, to become a judge of the Court of Special Sessions of New York City, serving from July 22, 1954, to December 1958. Elected a justice of the City Court of the City of New York, he served until 1966; he was a judge of the Supreme Court of the State of New York from 1966-1977. In a message on the occasion of the Jewish New Year, on September 10, 1953, President Eisenhower said in part, ?Among the greatest lessons your history can teach, as the world struggles to find its way toward peace, are the patience and good will that have so frequently seen expression in the thousands of years of Jewish life. May this New Year bring to peoples of good faith everywhere the reassurance that more tranquil days are indeed near, and that the citizens of all nations will learn to live together with the understanding and harmony that God-loving people so fervently desire.?From the Collection of Louis B. Heller"

This is copy number 8. A short novel expanded from the novella "The Fireman" published in 1951. "While the jet bombers boom overhead and another nuclear war threatens, Americans live a mindless life in a society where everyone is encouraged to lose himself in such distractions as four-wall television, hearing-aid radios, high-speed travel, and group sports. Life is reduced to the paste- pudding norm of a mass audience, for it serves the purpose of the government to keep people from thinking ... The gadget are, of course, marvelous and everywhere, while the greatest enemies of the status quo are books, which, when they are occasionally discovered, are burned by firemen who are, in this fireproof age, no longer needed to put out fires, but to set them ..." - Hillegas, The Future as Nightmare, pp. 158-9. "In a totalitarian state, books are burned and private thought or action is criminal." - Gerber, Utopian Fantasy (1973), p. 159. Filmed in 1966 by Francois Truffaut. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-153.
