Molecular Structure of Nucleic Acids. A Structure for Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid

[London:] Reprinted from Nature, Vol. 171, p. 737, 25 April,, 1953. [Together with] M. F. H. Wilkins, A. R. Stokes, & H. R. Wilson: Molecular Structure of Deoxypentose Nucleic Acids. [And] Rosalind E. Franklin & R. G. Gosling: Molecular Configuration in Sodium Thymonucleate. [In] Nature, Vol. 171. 7 page pamphlet, staple-bound. 2 diagrams (including the double helix), 2 illustrations from photographs. Very small light crease at fore-edge. First edition, the rare offprint of the announcement of the structure of DNA, one of the most important scientific achievements of the 20th century. DNA was discovered by a Swiss physician in 1869, and over the succeeding years many researchers investigated its structure and function, with some arguing that it might be the molecule of genetic inheritance. By the early 1950s this was one of the most important questions in biology, and a number of teams were attempting to crack the puzzle. Maurice Wilkins of King's College London and his colleague Rosalind Franklin were both working on DNA, with Franklin producing X-ray crystallography images of its structure. Wilkins also introduced his friend Francis Crick to the subject, and Crick and his partner James Watson began their own investigation at Cambridge, focusing on molecular models. After one failed attempt in which they postulated a triple-helix, they were banned by their laboratory from spending any additional time on the subject. But a year later, after seeing fresh data from King's, they began work again and announced that not only had they discovered the double-helix structure of DNA, but even more importantly, that "the specific pairing we have postulated immediately suggests a possible copying mechanism for the genetic material". The resulting paper was rushed to press in Nature, along with corresponding work by Franklin and Wilkins, who were only revealed much later to have been the primary sources of data for Watson and Crick's hypothesis. This offprint of these celebrated papers is printed from the same type as the journal printing. The articles were originally set in a single column of monotype, from which the offprint was produced, while the journal itself was made in double columns from stereotype plates taken from the monotype. A superb copy of the founding document of modern biology.

ORIGINAL PANORAMIC PHOTOGRAPH OF THE 11TH WORLD SCIENCE FICTION CONVENTION - PHILADELPHIA, 1953

Philadelphia: S.i., 1953. Original silver gelatin photograph by "Zinni" measuring ca.19" x 8", tastefully matted and framed to an overall size of ca.22.5" x 12.15". Fine condition (not examined out of frame). Known as Philcon II, the 1953 World Science Fiction Convention was held at the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in September, 1953. A momentous occasion in the history of science fiction literature, as it was the first convention to present the Hugo Award. Although no award was presented in 1954, the Hugo has been awarded annually by the World Science Fiction Convention since 1955. The photograph pictures a banquet hall filled with hundreds of men and women from the golden age of the business. Among the many attendees were: Forrest J. Ackerman, Poul Anderson, Isaac Asimov (toastmaster), Alfred Bester, Hannes Bok, Anthony Boucher, Ray Bradbury, John W. Campbell Jr., L. Sprague de Camp, Lester del Rey, August Derleth, Ed Emshwiller, Philip José Farmer, Virgil Finlay, Fritz Leiber, Willy Ley (guest of honor), A.E. Van Vogt, and Jack Williamson. The first Hugo winners were Alfred Bester (novel), Ed Emshwiller and Hannes Bok (cover artists, tied), Virgil Finlay (interior illustrator), Philip José Farmer (new science fiction author), Forrest J. Ackerman (#1 fan personality), and Willy Ley (excellence in fact articles). An exceptional item, capturing perhaps the most significant moment in the history of science fiction literature.         ORIGINAL ART: GIANT GOLDEN BOOK OF CAT STORIES

      - ROJANKOVSKY,FEODOR. ORIGINAL ART: GIANT GOLDEN BOOK OF CAT STORIES. Offered here are 4 fine original watercolors that appear on pp. 19 and 54 of The Giant Book Of Cat Stories published by Golden Books in 1953. The 4 images are attractively mounted, matted and framed to 35 inches wide x 12" high. They could be separated and framed individually. The first image is a great seaside scene. The cat is the captain of a cruise ship and he wears a cap and smokes a pipe. The ship, palm trees and low buildings make a charming Mediterranean scene. It measures 4 1/2" square. The next watercolor shows the prow of a working sailboat with workers closing the sails in port. The foreground shows the old captain smoking a pipe. He is leaning over to receive a cat given to him by a little girl. The image measures 8" wide x 5 1/2" high with a corner clipped. The third image shows a variety of brightly colored ships and boats in the harbor. In the foreground the cat captain is smoking his pipe, wearing his cap and a sweater. The image measures 4 1/4" wide x 6" high. The final piece is a different view of the same harbor with a lighthouse in the background and the sky coloring at dusk. The captain is talking with another cat leaning on a railing. The image measures 3 3/4" wide x 4 1/2" high. Rojankovsky was a Russian emigre artist who became an important illustrator of children's books. He illustrated the Domino Press' landmark Daniel Boone, and won the Caldecott Award in 1956 for Frog Went A'Courtin. Original art by Rojan rarely appears on the market and these are great images.

        The Marilyn Monroe Story

New York; Rudolph Field. 1953, 1953. First Edition. 8vo. Publisher's bright yellow paper coloured boards with some exciting offsetting from the dustwrapper. Titled in red to front board. Scarce in hardback this is the first official book on Miss Monroe, and contains a number of "Personality Photos" many of which prove that she had considerable quantities of personality.
