The Sikh Regiment in the Second World War.

Norwich: published privately by Jarrold and Sons Ltd.,, [1953]. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, regimental badge gilt to front cover. With the dust jacket. Map frontispiece and 24 other maps, 9 of them folding in pocket at rear. Recent book label of Shamus Wade, "Toy soldier dealer who pioneered the market for little lead gunners, Gurkhas and guards" (Telegraph obituary 7 September 2014) to front pastedown. Spine rolled, extremities very faintly rubbed and bumped, edges lightly spotted, the cloth bright, a very good copy in the rare, slightly chipped and marked dust jacket with a short tear to the head of the front joint. First edition, uncommon: Copac traces the Imperial War Museum and London Library copies only; OCLC adds New York Public Library and Colgate University, NY. "The Regt. had nine Infantry Bns and the MG Bn in the field, plus various training and administrative units. The task of recording their travels and battles in a coherent narrative manner could not have been easy. The author overcame most of the pitfalls by writing a strictly chronological history of the entire Regt but with numerous margins notes to clarify what each Bn was doing, where, and at what precise dates. The result is a massively factual compilation which is reasonably easy to follow and which deals with the Regt's services in almost ever theatre of war between 1939 and 1945" (Perkins). Birdwood (1897-1987), sometime member of the the Indian Observer Corps, finished the war as lieutenant-colonel in the 11th Sikh Regiment.

Oxford, NY 1953 - AS NEW book. Blue cloth. Upper board w paper label. Gilt spine lettering. Each text page faced w illustrated page Square 8vo, unpaginated. White DJ almost as white as new. Only 3 minor flaws: (1) p/c. (2) Edges lightly sunned. (3) Lower front tip has a 1/32" wear chip. No other chips or closed tears, of even that tiny length.         Fahrenheit 451 (The "Asbestos" Edition)

New York: Ballantine Books, 1953. Hardcover. Very Good +. Joe Mugnaini. #27 OF 200 COPIES ISSUED IN THIS, THE "ASBESTOS" BINDING, WHICH REPRESENTS THE TRUE 1ST INCARNATION OF "FAHRENHEIT 451". EACH OF THE 200 COPIES IS SIGNED BY RAY BRADBURY AT THE LIMITATION AND EACH IS "BOUND IN JOHN-MANVILLE QUINTERRA, AN ASBESTOS MATERIAL WITH EXCEPTIONAL RESISTANCE TO PYROLYSIS". This copy does show some wear to the boards. There's the customary soiling (almost impossible to avoid on this title) along the panels and there's also light staining to the bottom-edges (fairly innocuous at the front panel and pronounced along the rear panel). Tasteful bookplate as well to the front pastedown and very light wear to the spine crown and the front upper tip. Still though, solid and presentable. The binding is very strong and, except for the bookplate, the book is very clean internally, with no writing or markings of any kind. Octavo, illustrated by Joe Mugnaini.

Package Festival (Original poster brochure, 1953)

New York: John Cage, 1953. Poster brochure advertising a festival concept, developed by John Cage and David Tudor, designed to feature recitals, readings, dance classes, lectures, and panel discussions. Composers, musicians, poets, and thinkers on board for the festival of "experimental" works included Cage, Tudor, Merce Cunningham, and Mary Caroline Richards. Rather than being a poster for a particular planned event, this "brochure" was designed to advertise the concept of such a thing to colleges and universities. It was 1953, and Cage was meeting with a wall of rejections for grants, fellowships, and even work in animated films or as a writer for magazines. The Package Festival was as experimental as any of the composers work, literally an idea that Cage hoped would offer not only himself, but the growing number of contemporaries whom we would ultimately make famous on an international scale. In his biography of Cage, Kenneth Silverman notes: "The festival offered a dance program by Cunningham, a recital of contemporary music by Tudor, and a lecture on "Artaud and New Theatre"--three programs a day for three days. Each event had its own price tag, from $750 for the dance down to $100 for the lecture. But if a client bought more than one event a discount began to operate, making the discounted cost fvo the entire three day festival $1250. ...the Package Festival found no sponsors at the time...[and] Cage left Stony Point to concertize and lecture for two months abroad." 17.5 x 18.5 inches. (44.5 x 47 cm), 8.75 x 9.25 inches (22.25 x 23.5 cm) folded. Brown newsprint stock with offset printing in black. Near Fine. Silverman, p. 123.
