        Enormous Henry James Library Collection Lot Literary Realism Criticism

      LIBRARY. We are offering for sale an absolutely enormous, incredibly extensive Henry James collection, mostly amassed and acquired in one fell swoop (with a few titles added just for the heck of it) from the Penrose Memorial Library at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. There are probably two boxes worth of books that are not catalogued below, nothing nearly as amazing as the pictured and detailed ones, but nonetheless, an admirable batch of beautiful books! It was originally collected and constructed by Robert McLean, a professor of English at Washington State University for a long stretch beginning in 1952. This set was part of his classical literature, art, and literary criticism library. McLean passed away in 2009 (see below listing details for obituary). McLean Robert Colin McLean, emeritus professor of English at Washington State University and resident of Pullman since 1961, died Nov. 3, 2009, of complications following an operation at Pullman Regional Hospital. He was 82. Robert was born Sept. 3, 1927, in Chicago, Ill. After service in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947, he received his bachelor?s and master?s degrees from Indiana University in 1949 and 1952 and his doctorate in English from Washington University in St. Louis in 1960. After initially teaching at the University of Rochester, he joined the literature faculty at Washington State University in 1961, advanced to full professor in 1969 and retired at that rank in 1993. As a teacher and scholar of 19th-century American literature, Robert was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the recipient of Ford Foundation support and other fellowships, and a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Edinburgh. He was author of George Tucker: Moral Philosopher and Man of Letters and numerous articles on American literature and culture, with a special emphasis on the fiction of Henry James. After helping to bring ESQ: A Journal of the American Renaissance to WSU in 1972, Robert variously headed that scholarly journal as co-editor and editor from 1975 until 1993. After his retirement, he continued to serve as example and mentor to former colleagues and graduate students and remained active with his work on James. As one former colleague put it on Robert?s retirement, ?He has done much for WSU, for ESQ and for our profession, earning the respect and gratitude of countless individuals who know him and admire him and his work.? Robert married Kathleen Rieman of New Jersey in 1951. They adopted one son, Colin Garrison McLean, in 1967 after their move to Pullman. Kathleen, a professional editor who joined WSU?s scholarly journals in 1970, shared Robert?s interests in 19 th - century American literature and Italy, to which the family traveled during his sabbaticals. Robert is survived by his son, Colin, now an agent with the U.S. Border Patrol, and his daughter-inlaw, Maria McLean, of Blaine, Washington, as well as by his younger brother Edward B. McLean of Crawfordsville, Ind. Robert also is survived in Indiana by his nephews Andrew McLean of Columbus and Ian McLean of Crawfordsville and by his nieces Jan Brenneisen of Indianapolis and Elizabeth Belser of Franklin, as well as by his niece Judy Adams of Dayton, Ohio. Robert was preceded in death by his wife Kathleen in 1988, and by his older brother Donald A. McLean and his sister, Glenna Brenneisen, both of Columbus, Ind. Surviving relatives and friends celebrate Robert?s long life and will sadly miss his wit, skepticism and kindness. . Very Good.

        ARCHIVE OF A 50-YEAR CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN AMBASSADOR GEORGE F. KENNAN AND HISTORIAN-BIOGRAPHER JOHN LUKACS: Comprising more than 160 of Kennan's long and thoughtful letters to his friend and colleague. With the original carbons of Lukacs's side of the correspondence.

The 162 Kennan letters consist of 64 handwritten items (13 autograph notes, signed; 51 autograph letters, signed, of which 18 are one page in length and 33 are 1 ½ to 6 pages long); and 98 typed items (29 typed notes, signed; 25 one-page typed letters, signed; and 44 typed letters 1 ½ to 7 pages in length). It is noteworthy that many of the typed letters have handwritten emendations and postscripts, some quite lengthy. There are also 2” (two inches) of carbon copies on tissue paper of Lukac’s letters to Kennan, 1952-2004. These provide a valuable counterpoint to the Kennan letters, specifically illustrating the give-and-take nature of the men’s epistolary “conversations.” Because of its scope and richness, it is very difficult to summarize the content of the 50-year correspondence between George Kennan and John Lukacs. Although we are considering only the Kennan side of it here, this side alone nevertheless dramatically illustrates the deep, long-lasting connection between two of the 20th century’s most original, innovative, and influential modern political thinkers/historians and offers a penetrating look inside the minds of both writers. As is obvious from the letters, each man admires the other greatly and uses the correspondence as a sounding board for putting into words a wide range of theories and opinions. Each writer also uses the other as a respected resource for detailed criticisms and suggestions about his writings, both for those works already in print and for those in progress. The Kennan side of the correspondence consists of approximately 162 letters, which we describe below, the earliest dating from October, 1952, the latest from February, 2003. Lukacs and Prof. Kennan discuss (there’s no other word for it, since the letters constantly refer back and forth to each other) topics in world and American history, particularly the politics of the WWII and post-WWII eras, as well as controversial views on current world events, including the collapse of the Soviet Union, American political trends, and thoughts about the future of America and Europe. There is also much about the books and articles both men wrote or are in the process of writing, and the longest of the Kennan letters are usually those that offer very detailed comments, often complete with referrals to page and line numbers, on various aspects of Lukacs’s writings, which Kennan often received from the author in the form of pre-publication proofs. The Kennan letters also provide meaningful insights into his most private feelings about religion in general, his own religious beliefs, his regrets, his fears for America’s future, etc. One continuing thread throughout the letters is Kennan’s pessimistic view of America’s current and future role on the international scene, which is evident even in his earliest letters to Lukacs. On 11/3/53, for example, he feels that “until there is fundamental re-education of the influential strata of the American public, reasonable and realistic words will continue to fall on deaf ears”, and his major way to feel useful, he now believes, will be to “improve the teaching and understanding of history.” Thirty years later, he continues to be “depressed—and alarmed—by the state of Soviet-American relations” and the impossibility of “anything resembling a sophisticated understanding of Russia in American governmental and journalistic circles” (8/27/83). Four years after that (6/18/87), he writes of his “despair” over “the failure of my efforts of so many years to bring about a better public and official understanding for the problems of nuclear weaponry and Soviet-American relations…[and his forebodings about] the imminent arrival of great calamities….”, and two months later (8/7/87), he laments that “journalists and television ‘anchor men’ [are] incapable of perceiving, and drawing attention to, the incredible weaknesses of the Reagan foreign policy….” By 4/14/93, he “continues to be depressed about the American political establishment, even as represented by the Clinton administration, and…I am more and more convinced that the country is in a bad way.” His views become no lighter as time passes, and on 8/3/98, he writes that as the millenium approaches, the world’s “new age” seems defined by “the abandonment of literature and poetry…[and] in place of this…a long period of virtual enslavement…[to] the automobile, television, drugs, and now the computer culture, [influences which are] not the enlargers of life they were originally seen to be, but the restrictors of it….” A year later (8/11/99), he adds that “it is primarily money that dominates the pages of the press and….the interests and preoccupations of the mass of the people.” The letters also contain much detailed commentary on 20th-century history, including, to list only a few examples, his feelings about his own highly controversial—and influential—“X article” (11/6/53, 8/13/91); his thoughts about the history of the U.S. Foreign Service and his own role in it (2/14/03); his opinions on Germany after WWII, Adenauer’s role and character, the effects of the long division of the country on German society (5/6/92); his views on Hungary and the nature of the Hungarian people (3/29/86, 4/16/86, 5/18/90); his opinions about South Africa and the “partition” idea (8/8/86); his take on “the collapse of Communism in Russia and Eastern Europe” and the need for the U.S. to create “something in the nature of Council of State” to guide the “political establishment” (8/24/89, 10/21/92); the Russian view of contemporary history (2/26/60); his meeting with Gorbachev (12/12/87); the question of whether “the original concepts of American democracy were ever meant to be applicable to so great a society as our present one” (10/21/92); his views on the failure of both major American political parties (12/28/57); his opinions on “the new president” and his “moralism” (2/6/77) and on recent presidential debates (10/24/84); and his views on the Pope’s character (10/28/79). Note that the dates given here are merely examples of some of the letters in which these views are aired, since many of them are reiterated and refined in other letters as well. Much of the correspondence, however, is concerned with the job of writing. On the one hand, Kennan offers very specific suggestions for and critiques of Lukacs articles and books, which he admires greatly (e.g., re Hitler of History, “I find this a superb work of historical insight and analysis… 5/31/97), and he often provides detailed political theories to explain his suggested emendations. On the other hand, he regularly solicits Lukacs’s opinions about his own work, saying “I can think of no one whose opinion about it would mean more to me” (7/23/92) and then he frequently comments on Lukac’s comments. He also writes much about his own opinions of his published work and what he sees as its strengths, limitations, and future direction. In one of his earliest letters, he notes that he is detaching himself from the world of contemporary international affairs and is dedicating himself now to “certain limited areas of our own diplomatic history” (11/6/53). By as early as 1969, he feels that “it is not to be given to me to complete, in these remaining years of active life [!], any further major work of scholarship” (4/20/69). Twenty years later he reiterates that “since the time left to me is now limited and rapidly shrinking, I [think] I should not write anything that is closely related to the passing scene…”, so he is working instead on “a more comprehensive and logical exposition” of his own political theories (6/18/88). By 1991, he describes in a 6-page letter his unhappiness with the way his newest book turned out. “The writing of it came a bit hard—a new experience for me” and adds that he should have approached the task differently (5/22/91). Kennan is also frank about his feelings about Christianity and the relationship between church and state. For example, he writes on 6/18/87 that “the true Christian should never accept any governmental responsibility…otherwise than with a prayer on his lips for forgiveness.” In several letters, including one prompted by a reviewer’s mentioning his “pro-Catholic inclinations” (7/10/95), he describes his Protestant religious beliefs in some detail, particularly in the letter of 2/11/02. The correspondence also occasionally touches on such personal matters as Kennan’s health issues, his travel impressions, and his family, although these passages usually play a very minor role in the larger expression of his political and philosophical beliefs and opinions about writing. The collection of original Kennan letters here is supplemented by several photocopies of such multi-page items sent to Lukacs as drafts of Kennan speeches (e.g. his 24-page “Personal View of the German Problem” (1989), his 10-page lecture at the National Foreign Affairs Training Center in Washington (10/13/94), his Nov. 8, 1988 Toynbee Prize speech, his 11-page speech of Feb. 3, 1974 at the Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars on the 50th anniversary of Wilson’s death). There are also numerous letters to Lukacs from Kennan’s secretaries, mostly regarding Kennan’s scheduling, that were not included in the final count or value given in this report. It also must be pointed out that approximately 103 of the letters were published in 2010 in Through the History of the Cold War: The Correspondence of George F. Kennan and John Lukacs (University of PA Press, 2010). Many of the letters printed in that work, however, were abridged, and the press run of the book was not large.

These issues date from the period of the journal's "revitalization" under the editorship of Dmitry Belyaev, who took it over following the unceremonious dismissal of WWII-era editor Grigorii Rylkin, who was publicly denounced for his "mismanagement" in the journal Kultura i Zhizn in 1948. Under Belyaev's editorship the magazine took a stronger anti-Western stance, reflecting the political exigencies of the Cold War. The current issues include strong cover graphics and dozens of satirical articles and illustrations by artists including Boris Efimov, Viktor Konovalov, Konstantin Eliseev, the three-man cartoon cooperative "Kukryniksi," and others.

Two short tears in the title leaf, and a short tear in pp. 43/44. Early printing of Beckett's dramatic masterpiece. Inscribed to the poet and photographer Lütfi Özkök: ''Pour / monsieur / Özkök / [?] / Sam. Beckett / Paris, février 1961''. With the recipient's note ''Sjölunda 21-22 juli'' on the last page; probably where and when the book was read. Lütfi Özkök had the rare opportunity to photograph the unapproachable Beckett at three occasions during the 60s. Their first session was held in Beckett's Paris apartment in 1961. Beckett didn't allow any pictures to be taken at first, so they sat down for a conversation instead, during which Özkök gradually won the confidence of the author. Beckett was amused by the story of the first Turkish stage production of Godot, which was banned by the authorities, who recognized Godot as a symbol of Communism. The ban could perhaps have been avoided if the authorities had finished the reading of the text, since Godot/Communism actually never appears. After a few hours of conversation Beckett finally asks Özkök to take out his camera, before it gets too dark to take pictures. The resulting photos were much appreciated by Beckett who often referred magazines and editors in need of the author's picture to Özkök. Federman & Fletcher 259.21

This copy is inscribed on the front cover from Edward Bawden and his wife Charlotte, 'Best wishes from C. & E. B. 1952.' An excellent copy of a rare book. Take The Broom is one of six tales drawn in this size by Bawden for his children, Richard and Joanna, during 1944. The book was redrawn on lithographic plates by Edward Bawden at the request of George Rainbird and Ruari McLean.

        Woodcut from Petrouchka

      Puterschein Hingham (Hingham, MA: Püterschein-Hingham, 1952). One of 100 copies. A woodcut in four colors cut by W. A. Dwiggins in 1921 and printed for the first time by Dorothy Abbe in 1952 from the original blocks. The lovely woodcut, in blue, yellow, orange, and black, illustrates Stravinsky's ballet Petrouchka, which tells the story of a Russian puppet that longs to be human. In Dwiggins's illustration, the puppet sits in front of a wall covered in blue and yellow jacquard wallpaper holding a book and looking wistful. Originally mounted on a single sheet folded to make four pages, on the inside of which was printed the musical theme from Stravinsky's ballet. The woodcut is now matted separately. The print measures 9 1/2 by 6 1/2 inches.

The Book-of-the-Month-Club edition, of which the book was half of the dual selection in September 1952 with all first edition pointers, e.g. "A" on copyright-page. D-j. also with all first state pointers: Blue-tinted photograph, which was later altered to olive, and the two lines of small production symbols at the end of the text on back-flap, but with "BOOK-OF-THE-MONTH CLUB* SELECTION" on top of front-flap. "Issued in light blue cloth covers identical to the first edition. The Kingsport Press [Tennessee] imprint appears on the copyright page.       Little Brown Boston: Little, Brown, 1952. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by Fante in 1956 to Richard Quine: "For Dick Quine, / Whom I love, respect, admire, applaud, and whistle at--with unspeakable enthusiasm. / John Fante / Aug 8, 1956 / Mobbu." Quine was an American film director and producer, responsible for "Bell, Book, and Candle" (1958), "Strangers When We Meet" (1960), "The World of Suzie Wong" (1960), "Paris, When It Sizzles" (1964), and "How to Murder Your Wife" (1965). Very Good in a Very Good plus, price-clipped dust jacket. Book is tight and clean apart from some foxing to the endpapers, outer hinges, and backstrip. Jacket is attractive, with light wear at the spine ends and corners, and a lightly toned spine panel. The only signed copy of this title we have ever encountered.

      Rio de Janeiro, 1952. No Dust Jacket. Schreyer, Helmut T. (1912-84) Escola tecnica do exercito computadores eletrunicos digitais. Rio de Janeiro: n.p., 1952 (appendix dated 1953). Reproduced typescript. Modern black cloth, original printed front wrapper preserved. [18, irregularly numbered], 368pp., [9]ff. 6 folding plates. Text diagrams. 211 x 153 mm. Provenance: Alwin Walther (1898-1967) with Schreyer's autograph presentation to Walther on flyleaf. Rubber stamp of the Institut fur Praktische Mathematik, Technische Hochschule, Darmstadt. Schreyer and Walther had known one another since the early 1940s. During the war Schreyer worked for Walther's department helping to design the inertial guidance system for Wernher von Braun's V-2 rocket project at Peenemunde. First edition. Schreyer was a friend of Konrad Zuse from college days, and from about 1934 collaborated with Zuse on his Z2, and possibly his Z3 and Z4 computers. From Schreyer's experience as a film projectionist he understood the durability of movie film, and he suggested the use of punched holes in discarded movie film as a data-input device. At least one device of this type was built at Alwin Walther's Institut fur Praktische Mathematik at the Technische Hochschule in Darmstadt. In 1941 Schreyer received a doctorate in telecommunications engineering with a thesis on the use of vacuum-tube relays in electronic circuits. Between 1941 and 1943, with modest financial support from the German Center for Aviation Research, he converted some logical designs created by Zuse into electronic circuits, building a small prototype electronic computer that achieved a switching frequency of about 10,000 Hz. This was damaged in an air raid on November 11, 1943, and later lost in the war. During the same time Schreyer helped build an accelerometer for the V-2 rocket at Peenemunde and a converter from radar analog signals to acoustic signals for figher planes. Because he could not find regular work in Germany after the war either in telecommunications or computers, Schreyer emigrated to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1949, where he became director of the laboratory of the Brazilian post office and a professor at the army technical college. Schreyer's experimental work on electronic digital computing is known from manuscript documents that he wrote during the war. When he emigrated to Brazil, he left these historic documents in the safekeeping of Konrad Zuse (Schreyer 1990). Schreyer's Escola tecnica do exercito computadores eletrunicos digitais is most probably the earliest book on electronic digital computers published in Latin America. The English-language preface states that the book "had its origin in an advanced course on 'Electronic Digital Computers' held at the Escola Tecnica do Exercito in Rio de Janeiro." Exactly why there may have been a need for this course at this time is unclear, since we have not been able to locate any records of the delivery of electronic digital computers to Brazil at this date. The work, which was crudely reproduced from typescript, was probably issued in very few copies; when we last checked there were no copies cited in OCLC. Origins of Cyberspace 876.

      [1952]. Original silver gelatin print. Measures approximately 10" x 13". In a wood and glass frame measuring approximately 12" x 15.5", with a small brass heraldic arms fastened to the top of the frame. Signed by Karsh in pencil and Alexander of Tunis in ink. Overall dampstain to the margins not affecting the image, Alexander's ink signature is partially faded, else good in a good frame with scattered surface scratches to the wood. A famous photograph of Field Marshal Harold Rupert Leofric George Alexander, a prominent British military commander in both World Wars, and the 17th Governor General of Canada. Taken by Karsh in 1952, when Alexander was named 1st Earl of Tunis. Alexander of Tunis rose to prominence during the First World War, receiving numerous honors and decorations; in the Second World War he commanded the 15th Army Group in Sicily and Italy, and was made Supreme Allied Commander of the Mediterranean. A scarce photograph likely from the family estate, as the custom wood frame and arms matches that used to frame Karsh's photograph of Margaret Alexander of Tunis from 1947. .

        The Old Man and the Sea. Advance Galley Proofs- Life Magazine Publication

      Life Magazine. Chicago. Life Magazine. August 1952. Galley Proofs are imprinted in black ink upon 9.0" x 30.0" sheets. A stamp in blue ink stating "ADVANCE GALLEY PROOFS" appears at top of title sheet. Further blue stamp stating "Advance Galley Proofs For Your Personal Reading Only. LIFE Publication Date, Sept.1". Accompanying letter is typed upon Life advertising department letterhead sheet (7.0" x 11.0") and is dated August 19, 1952. Signed in ink by C.W. Hanson. Original advance Galley Proofs prepared by Life Magazine for its special publication of the novel in its September 1, 1952 issue. The Life publication was the 1st appearance of Hemingway's novel, preceeding the Scribners book publication of September 8, 1952. The September 1 issue of Life was solely devoted to the novel, which was accompanied by photographs by Alfred Eisenstadt. The issue sold in excess of five million copies. A letter from Life Magazine Chicago Advertising Manager, C.W. Hanson, to an unidentified recipient accompanies these proofs and explains in detail the Magazine's motivation for publication of Hemingway's work. e.g. "Our editors were so impressed with this newest bit of Hemingway- actually, they think its "one of the greatest stories of our time"- that they have decided to publish all 30,000 words of it in the September 1st issue of LIFE." ... "Here's a galley proof of The Old Man of the Sea so that you can come on the story with the same sense of discovery of interest and greatness that the editors recognize. I hope you enjoy it." The letter contains further interesting comments. Due to the nature and quality of paper in galley production, these tri-folded sheets are extremely brittle and present chipping to top and side edges- not intruding upon text. Several short starts at folds may be seen. The title page sheet has severely split at both folds and has been reattached with adhesive tape- not affecting title text. This same condition is more dramatically evidenced on the final sheet with a hole intruding upon the middle of 4 lines of text.

      This letter is to Master Boschot, Secretary for Life of the French Institute, Paris. It reads, "My dear Master, I am sorry to respond so late to your kind letter. I underwent treatment at the Val Mont clinic for more than a month, which is where I heard, with great joy, of the honor the Academy of Fine Arts is making me by adopting me as foreign Associated member. It is with deepest gratitude that I am thanking you; I am particularly touched by your kind appreciation...." It is signed, "A. Honegger".
