Typed Letter, signed ("F. LL. W. Frank!") to Lewis Mumford

n.p. [Spring Green, Wisconsin], february 20, 1952 - An affectionate, conversational, and at times pointed, letter to Wright's friend and champion, architectural critic Lewis Mumford. Wright playfully addresses Mumford as "Llewis" and begins the letter with high praise: "I can't tell you how good it was to be with you again in spirit as well as the bodily presence which is essentially the same vital Llewis. The amazing comprehension, as of the earlier days of our friendship, is still vibrant. You were never so much the critic as the creative writer, champion of cultural causes - Llewis. Little good our journalistic sort of critics do our Causes. Even less harm they do to evil ones than good to noble ones because radio, press, and print crawl with them like flies on a window pane. So goes everything we have - prolix but not prolific. We are getting too enormous for a Democracy. Unless we create for ourselves our own eddy in some swirl of the backwater we are washed out and away with the current into internationalism and the commonplace." The rest of the letter concerns various offers that Wright has received from editors interested in publishing his writing, with the noted irony that he was offered more for his work in the early days of his career, when the magazine industry was more robust - " - I guess the magazines are not far from [dead]? Except for advertising." 8vo. 2 pp. typed on oblong Taliesen stationery, with some ink corrections. Prior fold, paperclip stain, else fine in custom red cloth folding box [Attributes: Soft Cover]

VIGNETTE FROM NIGHTS OF HORROR - ORIGINAL ARTWORK

np: NP. 1952. "1 drawing. Accompanying was a letter describing the genealogy of the drawing, ""The ""Nights of Horror"" series was drawn by a gifted artist, whom it was my good luck to meet in person in 1952 and who graciously sold me his original drawings, some of which were even inspired by my suggestions. Naturally I spent a small fortune for those drawings, but I have always felt very happy to own them during the past 18 years."" Despite the curious note, the art does not resemble the work of Joe Schuster, co-creator of Superman, who drew the Nights of Horror serials depicted in Craig Yoe's 2008 book Secret Identity." 5"" X 8"", ink and gouache on paper. Very good.

Typed Letter Signed to Earl B. Dickerson

1952. Two page Typed Letter Signed with handwritten emendations in the text, to Earl B. Dickerson, urging him to run with Vincent Hallinan on the Progressive Party ticket for Vice-President of the United States. On his official letterhead: "Color and Democracy Colonies and Peace" as Vice-Chairman, Council on African Affairs, dated Feb. 12, 1952. Quarto. Housed in a dark red quarter morocco and cloth clamshell case. Earl Dickerson was the first African-American graduate from the University of Chicago and a leading figure in the Civil Rights Movement who sat beside Martin Luther King, Jr. during his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Dickerson was greatly influenced by The Souls of Black Folk in his youth, and he eventually met W.E.B. Du Bois through their mutual involvement in the NAACP. In this letter Du Bois attempts to convince Dickerson to run for Vice-President on the Progressive Party ticket, and Du Bois also anticipates the social movements of the 1960s. It is worth noting that the only published monograph on Dickerson's life, Earl B. Dickerson: A Voice for Freedom and Equality, makes no mention of Dickerson being considered for the Progressive Party's Vice-Presidential nomination. This is an important and otherwise unknown aspect of Dickerson's career as a political activist. .

        TYPER LETTER SIGNED

Washington DC 1952 - One page typed letter on Hoover's Office Of The Director letterhead dated August 15, 1952. The letter is to an admirer from Fresno, California and says "Thank you very much for your note of Agust 7, 1952. Your thoughtful comments are indeed kind, and I am most grateful for your remarks concerning my administration of the FBI. I am pleased to know that you enjoyed the movie regarding the Bureau's work, and sincerely appreciate your offer of assistance. Sincerely yours, J. Edgar Hoover". Hoover has signed in blue ink. Fine Condition John Edgar Hoover was the first director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.) and served in that post from the time he was 29 years old until his death at the age of 77. Hoover began working in U.S. government service in 1913, first at the Library of Congress, then at the Justice Department. During World War I Hoover worked for the Bureau of Investigation, keeping statistical records of immigrants for the Alien Enemy Bureau. A vigorous anti-communist, Hoover quickly moved up the ranks in the postwar period, and by 1924 was appointed Director of the Bureau of Investigation (later called the Federal Bureau of Investigation). He held the post until 1972, an administration that lasted from President Coolidge to President Nixon. Hoover had a reputation for hyper vigilance in the face of crime and political subversion, and the F.B.I. grew to become known as an incorruptible force who kept files on just about everybody, from gangsters and spies to pop culture figures including John Lennon, Martin Luther King, Jr., Marilyn Monroe and Eldridge Cleaver. Hoover has been a controversial figure since his death, and there has been much speculation about his personal life, family background and dictatorial rule over the Bureau; given his political power over five decades, he is a central figure in the history of scandal and U.S. politics.         The Natural

New York: Harcourt Brace and Company. (1952). First. First edition. Spine a little faded, near fine in the gray binding (one of three, with no priority) in a very near fine, price-clipped dustwrapper with a couple of tiny tears and nominal rubbing. Inscribed by the author in the year of publication: "For Charles Crow. Cordially Bern. July 1952." Crow was a friend of Malamud's from New York, and advised Malamud when he applied for teaching positions, eventually accepting a position at Oregon State College. Crow's advice to Malamud is quoted in Bernard Malamud: A Writer's Life by Philip Maurice Davis. An especially nice copy of the author's first book, perhaps the classic baseball novel, and basis for the sugarcoated but nevertheless effective Barry Levinson film featuring Robert Redford, Robert Duvall, Glenn Close, and Kim Basinger. .

        PICASSO DESSINS

Les Editions Braun & Cie, Paris 1952 - 48pp, 15 color illustrations + color cover. Text in French. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. This is a beautifully produced 1952 publication with a text by Paul Eluard that reproduces in facsimile (via photo-lithography on deckled Velin Lana paper) sixteen drawings by Pablo Picasso executed between 1942 and 1946. A presentable copy of this exquisite though fragile rarity whose textblock and inside boards show some typical light toning along with a few tiny brown specks to the first preliminary. The dust jacket has some small closed tears, fraying, chipping and minor paper loss at the extremities of the spine, and is browned and soiled around the edges. Its inside lower rear flap has detached along the vertical fold, but is completely intact and present. Still in all, this is a much sharper copy in hand of this lovely tome than it describes here. It has been priced accordingly. The New Book of Martyrs, 1918) and Civilisation (1918, tr. 1919). These collections of sketches are noted for their compassionate accounts of human suffering. He was successful as a dramatist; his Dans l'ombre des statues was performed in 1912 (tr. In the Shadow of Statues, 1914) and L'oeuvre des athlètes in 1920. His fiction includes two cycles of novels—Cycle de Salavin (1920–32, tr. 1936), about a sensitive eccentric, and Chronique des Pasquiers (1933–45, tr. 1937–46), about a bourgeois Parisian family. Essays in Scènes de la vie future (1930, tr. America: the Menace, 1931) and other collections reflect Duhamel's aversion to overindustrialization" (Columbia Enclyclopedia). He wrote passionately against war and its atrocities , and against the rise of Naziism. He was elected to the Académie Français in 1935. Though now largely forgotten, he is perhaps best remembered for his timeless epigram: "It is always brave to say what everyone thinks"The TLs by owner Jean Francesche reads: "The owner of this copy had read a book by Jules Romains, edited in 1958 by the Fayard Publishing House. It was the fourth book from the collection 'The Forty: MEMORIES AND SECRETS OF A WRITER.' "Page 128: 'In THE PALS, what part of the book is autobiographical and contains actual events?' "Page 129: 'It is not impossible to find a resemblance between the cheeks and glasses of Huchon with those of Duhamel, just as it is not impossible to find a certain pretentiousness in the future author of DESERT OF BIEVRES when Huchon prepares the veal stew as no one else can (to be more precise it was more like something between

Escola tecnica do exercito computadores electronicos digitais. Presentation inscription to Alwin Walther

Rio de Janeiro, 1952. <p>Schreyer, Helmut T. (1912-84) Escola tecnica do exercito computadores eletrunicos digitais. Rio de Janeiro: n.p., 1952 (appendix dated 1953). Reproduced typescript. Modern black cloth, original printed front wrapper preserved. [18, irregularly numbered], 368pp., [9]ff. 6 folding plates. Text diagrams. 211 x 153 mm. Provenance: Alwin Walther (1898-1967) with Schreyer&#39;s autograph presentation to Walther on flyleaf. Rubber stamp of the Institut fur Praktische Mathematik, Technische Hochschule, Darmstadt. Schreyer and Walther had known one another since the early 1940s. During the war Schreyer worked for Walther&#39;s department helping to design the inertial guidance system for Wernher von Braun&#39;s V-2 rocket project at Peenemunde.</p> <p>First edition. Schreyer was a friend of Konrad Zuse from college days, and from about 1934 collaborated with Zuse on his Z2, and possibly his Z3 and Z4 computers. From Schreyer&#39;s experience as a film projectionist he understood the durability of movie film, and he suggested the use of punched holes in discarded movie film as a data-input device. At least one device of this type was built at Alwin Walther&#39;s Institut fur Praktische Mathematik at the Technische Hochschule in Darmstadt. </p><p>In 1941 Schreyer received a doctorate in telecommunications engineering with a thesis on the use of vacuum-tube relays in electronic circuits. Between 1941 and 1943, with modest financial support from the German Center for Aviation Research, he converted some logical designs created by Zuse into electronic circuits, building a small prototype electronic computer that achieved a switching frequency of about 10,000 Hz. This was damaged in an air raid on November 11, 1943, and later lost in the war. </p> During the same time Schreyer helped build an accelerometer for the V-2 rocket at Peenemunde and a converter from radar analog signals to acoustic signals for figher planes. Because he could not find regular work in Germany after the war either in telecommunications or computers, Schreyer emigrated to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1949, where he became director of the laboratory of the Brazilian post office and a professor at the army technical college. Schreyer&#39;s experimental work on electronic digital computing is known from manuscript documents that he wrote during the war. When he emigrated to Brazil, he left these historic documents in the safekeeping of Konrad Zuse (Schreyer 1990).</p><p>Schreyer&#39;s Escola tecnica do exercito computadores eletrunicos digitais is most probably the earliest book on electronic digital computers published in Latin America. The English-language preface states that the book "had its origin in an advanced course on &#39;Electronic Digital Computers&#39; held at the Escola Tecnica do Exercito in Rio de Janeiro." Exactly why there may have been a need for this course at this time is unclear, since we have not been able to locate any records of the delivery of electronic digital computers to Brazil at this date. The work, which was crudely reproduced from typescript, was probably issued in very few copies; when we last checked there were no copies cited in OCLC. Origins of Cyberspace 876.</p>
