The Structure of Synthetic Polypeptides. I. The Transform of Atoms on a Helix" in Acta Crystallographica, Volume 5, Part 5, 10 September 1952, pp. 581-586

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS "A FIRST STEP BY CRICK & WATSON ON THE ROAD TO THE DISCOVERY OF THE DOUBLE HELIX" (Jeremy Norman, History of Information Website). This paper presents "Crick's full mathematical treatment… of the x-ray patterns produced by helical molecules generally" (Judson, Eighth Day of Creation, p. 129). It is the "important precursory work on spiral structures leading to the theory of DNA" (PBA Galleries, 2011 Auction). As this paper went to publication, Crick wrote of it to his colleague Lawrence Brown: We have found "A structure for D.N.A… beautiful that we swoon every time we think of it" (Christies, Autographed letter by Crick, 2013, 1160-65). "In February, 1952 Scottish physicist William Cochran at the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, and physicist and molecular biologist Francis Crick also at the Cavendish Laboratory, and Czech-English physical chemist and crystallographer Vladimir Vand of the University of Glasgow submitted their paper on the theory of helical diffraction to Acta Crystallographica.  "The paper [this paper]… provided the formulae for the Fourier transforms of a number of helical structures, and presented evidence that the structure of a synthetic polypeptide was based on the alpha helix of Pauling and Corey. [Cochran wrote:] "It was, I believe, the first fairly conclusive experimental evidence for the existence of a helical structure at the molecular level. . . . The main value of this work, seen in retrospect, is that it was a first step on the road to the discovery of the structure of DNA by Jim Watson and Crick" (William Cochran, "This week's citation classic," Current Contents, May 18, 1987, 16. CONDITION & DETAILS: Copenhagen: Ejnar Munksgaard Ltd. First edition in original wraps. 4to. 10.25 by 7.5 inches (256 x 188mm). Continuously paginated pp. 557- 700.         Archive of letters, documents and promissory notes concerning financial matters, mostly written to Porter's lawyer and relative Albert Harvey Cole

New York, 1952. 6 typed letters, signed ("Cole"), to Albert Harvey Cole, on Waldorf-Astoria letterhead; 3 typed documents, signed ("Cole Porter"); three promissory notes, signed ("Cole Porter"); 4 retained carbons; 1 typed letter, signed, from Margaret Moore, secretary to Cole Porter. Various sizes, letters approx. 11 x 8-1/2 in. Some light creasing, tears with loss to upper right corner of two documents, not affecting text, else generally near fine. Cole Porter on His Finances: "It's very difficult to keep the wolf away from the door" A fascinating correspondence, revealing that behind a nonchalant pose of indifference to money matters - "Sara Murphy commented that [Porter] never paid attention to money, assuming that everyone had it" (ANB) - Porter kept a close eye on his finances and was deeply concerned about his financial standing. In a series of 6 typed letters from Porter to his attorney and relative Albert Harvey Cole, Porter asks that money be transferred into certain accounts (in order to keep a minimum of $5,000 in his "Special Account"), inquires into account balances, complains about his tax liability (a whopping $120,000 for the first quarter of 1945), thanks Cole for "that life saving loan," and wishes he could "touch a bit" of his inheritance from his mother's estate. It is clear from these letters, as well as the three promissory notes in which Porter borrows over $26,000, that despite his income and his family's wealth, Porter was often short on funds. A revealing collection of letters and documents.

THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1952. First edition. about Fine/Near Fine. A lovely copy of this American classic. Book about Fine with the spine gilt only a trifle rubbed, binding sharp and likely unread. Bookseller's ticket on the front paste-down In a Near Fine, price-clipped dust jacket with light wear at the spine ends and along spine fold, but bright and clean withal. The final work of fiction published in the author's lifetime, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and cited by the Nobel Prize Committee, "The Old Man and the Sea" cemented Hemingway's legacy as one of the greatest American writers of the twentieth century and would turn him into a household name. The story follows the tribulations of an aging and suddenly unlucky fisherman, Santiago, as he tries to catch a gigantic marlin in the Straits of Florida. Hemingway wanted to show the simple dignity and biblical nature of Santiago's trials - and succeeded mightily. The book was originally published in full in an issue of Life Magazine, which subsequently sold 5 million copies in less than a week. "No outbursts of spite or false theatricalism impede the smooth rush of its narrative. Within the sharp restrictions imposed by the very nature of his story Mr. Hemingway has written with sure skill. Here is the master technician once more at the top of his form, doing superbly what he can do better than anyone else." (Contemporary New York Times Review). about Fine in Near Fine. dust jacket.

John Ford's framed International Award from the Venice International Film Festival for The Quiet Man (1952)

Venice International Film Festival, Venice 1952 - Director John Ford's framed International Award from the Venice International Film Festival for his classic 1952 film, "The Quiet Man." Ford also received a nomination for the Golden Lion Award at the same festival and went on to win the 1953 Academy Award for Best Director for the film. Begun in 1932, the Venice Festival is one of the most prestigious film events in the world, second only to Cannes, and the oldest fillm festival still being held.28 x 20 inches, original black wood frame. Unexamined out of frame, but the award certificate appears to be in Fine condition, and the frame is Very Good with a bit of edgewear, with evidence that the backing has been removed. Presumably this either the frame in which the award was presented or the one Ford had made for it. A unique piece of film history from one of the iconic director's most critically acclaimed films.
