        [Photo Album]: South Africa 1952

South Africa. 1952. Oblong quarto. Measuring 10" x 12.5". String-tied red leather over paper boards with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 96 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2.5" x 4" and 5.5" x 7.5", with captions. Album is very good with short tears and edgewear with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by an English woman during a trip to South Africa, then known as The Union of South Africa, a dominion of Great Britain, with her extended family, at least some of whom were Americans. The album takes place during the summer of 1952 and shows various tourist sites throughout Cape Town. The photos show the government buildings and monuments, including the Voortrekkers monument in Pretoria. The indigenous people of the country are seen throughout the album including numerous images of Zulus. There are photos of topless women with captions commenting on their appearance such as "the latest in hairdos," as well as the men and children of the community. Also documented is a trip to a local market with scenes of the travelers as well as the Zulu people purchasing goods. One photo of a Zulu child reads, "my pet picanninny," reflecting the casual racism of the era, which didn't prevent the company from attending a Zulu dance festival which featured "maidens," older women, and a religious group called the Scotchmen. The Zulu men and women are seen with drums and other instruments dancing in traditional clothing and headdresses. One caption reads, "past their heyday but still shaking a mean spear," under a photo of older men dancing. The trip also focused on the landscape of the area with views of the natural beauty of South Africa. One group of photos is captioned, "typical South African scenery with native huts nestling on hillsides," another reads "Indian Ocean at Scottburgh Natal." They took a guided tour up the Umfolozi River to see hippos and crocodiles; a hippo is seen here in the distance in one photo. The South African man who took them up river was captioned "a character." They visited a native village and posed by the huts, "of the beehive type" and with villagers. One photo is captioned, "view from inside the hut" another reads, "gone native" and shows the very well-dressed British people standing beside a thatched hut. Also featured are animals such as monkeys and numerous photos of the Drakensburg Mountains along with a brochure of the gardens there. An interesting photographic account of a South African trip with an emphasis on Zulu culture from a British tourist perspective. .

        The Nymphs of Fiesole

Verona: Officina Bodoni, 1952. with the woodcuts made by Bartolommeo di Giovanni for a lost quattrocento edition, which were used to illustrate various later texts and have now been reassembled and recut. Postscript by Hans Mardersteig. #86 of 225 copies. A fine copy without any foxing to deckle edges or fading to vellum spine. With 23 woodcuts re-cut by Fritz Kredel and 1 facsimile title-page. XI, 127 (1). Tall 8vo (8" x 11 ˝"). Publisher’s half vellum gilt fillet, gilt lettering on spine, top edge gilt, other edges uncut, decorative patterned boards, vellum tips. Printed in Griffon type on the hand-press on Fabriano paper. One of the most important books of the Officina Bodoni. This edition attempts to restore the original series of woodcuts made for the "Ninfale" by Bartolome di Giovanni (fl 1488 - d. 1501) , to whom we owe the designs for most of the woodcuts to be found in Florentine illustrated books of the last decade of the 15th century. The poem of Boccaccio was written in about 1344-46, translated into French by Anthony Guerin and then into English prose by John Goubourne, (who probably did not know Italian) where it was published in 1597 by Ia R.         Archive - RAF Service in Sudan - Photographs & Documents - Forced Landing, Aircraft Rescue & Salvage

Sudan, 1952. Sudan, 1952-1953. Archive of photographs and papers of RAF Flying Officer Harold Melville Kent, pertaining to his service in Sudan, and in particular a forced landing made in a desolate hill region south of Khartoum 21 September 1952, including a firsthand account of the event by one of the passengers who was fortuitously a Crash Inspector of the Middle East Air Force, and a series of official photographs of the aircraft rescue and salvage. Several photographs show Sudanese people, their dwellings, daily chores, and assisting with the aircraft rescue. Manuscript account, Folio. 2 leafs, 4 pages in manuscript. Royal Air Force Claim for Indemnification regarding crash landing, 8vo. completed in manuscript and signed. RAF telegraph message and signed letter addressed to Flying Officer Kent, both from early 1953. Photograph album containing 168 snapshot views taken in Sudan, ranging in size from 6 x 6 cm to 8,5 x 12 cm. 8vo. oblong album, 23 x 16 cm, string-tied patterned cloth boards, wear to spine, else very good. Additional twenty-two (22) RAF Crown Copyright Reserved Photographs measuring approximately 16 x 14 cm, each stamped with printing date 23 March 1953 and contained in individual plastic sleeves for protection. An exceptionally fascinating personal air force archive, uniquely focused on a momentous undertaking. Very good condition. Aircraft wreckage and recovery are the focus of these photographs and papers, from the personal archive of the valorous Royal Air Force aviator who made the landing safely enough that none of his passengers were even injured. Following engine failure, officer Kent made a skillful forced landing of a British Vickers Valetta VW819 in the uncharted wilds of Sudan, which was followed by a notable feat of engineering, perseverance, and hard labour - a decidedly monumental rescue mission on behalf of the Royal Air Force. The flight had departed from Khartoum early in the morning, its planned destination being Juba. The aircraft carried six passengers and two large engines as cargo. Alas, a forced landing was necessary, placing the aircraft in a field near Renk, a town in the Upper Nile State of South Sudan, and some 23 miles from a native village called Jebel Megeinis. The pilot's archive memorializes the event and includes the following: A surviving passenger's firsthand manuscript account of the forced landing of RAF aircraft Valetta VW819. The writer was a "Crash Inspector" for the Middle East Air Force, and writes the "true" account of the event, noting authentic and altered reports that were published in newspapers. Excerpts from his manuscript report: "In the green dawn of 21st September 1952 the ill fated Valetta VW 819 stood silhouetted on Khartoum airfield... I had little thought of adventure ahead..." "The true story started when, to my alarm, I felt the aircraft suddenly yaw as the starboard engine stopped without warning, some 1 1/2 hours after take-off..." "... freight consisted of two aircraft engines - in very large and heavy crates - which resisted our combined efforts to move even slightly. I invited our officer cadet to throw himself overboard to save the rest of us but he failed to respond to this plea... it was clear we were going to force land." "With wheels up the aircraft slid rather bumpily along in a very muddy grassland. Calmly we unstrapped ourselves, opened the door and vacated the aircraft in case of fire." "... returned to study our assets... 14 tins of tinned meat and about a gallon of water. " "A faint drone in the distance heralded the arrival of another civilian passenger aircraft... our plight was known..." "Events up to this point were factually reported by the Sudan Star that evening." "As crash inspector Middle East Air Forces I found myself in the unique position of being able to carry out a first hand survey. Confident of early rescue I made a few notes of the damage to the aircraft whilst the others..." "About now I became very thankful that our party consisted of only 7 men and not the mixed party of about 15 women and children and 20 men I had left in the other Valetta." Royal Air Force Claim Form 1784 for Indemnification made by the pilot, a congratulatory telegraph message, and a letter to him from RAF Headquarters, Middle East Air Force. With the claim document, Flying Officer Harold M. Kent, is petitioning for the "Return of Service kit and Equipment lost or damaged on service" at Jebel Megeinis, some 200 miles south of Khartoum, the location described as "Uninhabited, Unwatered, Uncharted Scrub & Swamp." The aviator was indeed skilled, carrying heavy cargo and landing with the loss of engine power, he and his six passengers surviving without injury. The telegraph offers Kent due praise for "skill and ingenuity displayed..." The pilot's album of snapshot photographs taken whilst serving in Sudan, and featuring views of the felled aircraft near Jabal Megeinis. The album begins with views of Khartoum including the Royal Air Force station and the bronze statue of General Gordon on camel-back. Travelling to his post, the aviator captures snapshots of the Mahdi mausoleum known as the Khalifa mosque and situated in Omdurman, an Egyptian mosque with high reaching minaret, and a guarded war memorial. Several photographs illustrate the predicament of the seven men who boarded the plane, these views corroborating the passenger's manuscript account described above, and the published news articles. Images show the aircraft laying in a field of 15 foot grass, pilot and passengers waving at an aircraft flying overhead, supplies being dropped by Sudan Airways, the wait for rescuers, a group of African hunters at the scene to provide aid as guides and porters, and eventually, the aircraft's wheel and base being dug out of the ground. The album further yields images of RAF tasks, remote camps, interactions and collaboration with indigenous men and women. Sudanese men and women are photographed performing traditional tasks, at their simple dwellings, hunting, fishing on the Nile, and travelling through vast plains, rounding out the visual chronicle quite beautifully. Twenty-two (22) official publicity photographs of the aircraft rescue and salvage, taken by a professional photographer and issued by the RAF as "Crown Copyright Reserved Photographs." These images clearly illustrate the immense work involved in unearthing the behemoth mass of metal from grass and mud, by manually digging then towing her to solid ground for on-the-spot repair. Seven (7) contemporary newspaper articles dealing specifically with the forced landing and the rescue mission. Informative and detailed, three or four having been published in the Sudan Star, each report presents more information of the event as details emerged and firsthand testimonies were obtained from the survivors. One also presents a brief biographical sketch of the young hero, then only 23 years of age, RAF Flying Officer Harold Melville Kent, born in Canada to British parents, growing up mainly in Falmouth England. Kent was a scholarly lad who earned a degree in astronautical engineering. Rescuers are also named in these reports. Excerpt from one article: "At a time when the eyes of the world are on the Sudan, a story of British grit and determination... a battle against nature to retrieve on of the machines of the modern age... A forced landing was made in the Bad Lands, a tract of scrub... First humans to come to the aid of the stranded men were natives form the village of Jebel Megeinis, 23 miles away... a motor convoy set off on the difficult desert journey with members of the R.A.F. 109 Maintenance Unit, two new engines... Under the guidance of F.O. Kent they have also cleared a 1,200 yard runway for the take-off..." This event captured a global audience, taking place only two months after the Egyptian Revolution of 1952 which was led by Colonel Muhammad Naguib and successfully deposed King Farouk of Egypt and the Sudan, ending the rule of the Muhammad Ali Dynasty and Egyptian sovereignty over Sudan. In February 1953, London and Cairo officials signed an Anglo-Egyptian accord, which allowed for a three-year transition period to end Anglo-Egyptian rule in Sudan, converting from co-dominium rule to self-government. During the transition phase, British and Egyptian troops would withdraw from Sudan. The crash site was near an African village named Jebel Megeinus [Jabal Megeinis]. A hill located in Southern Kordofan State has the same name, and an approximate elevation of 537 meters above sea level. The Vickers Valetta was a British twin-engine military transport aircraft which first entered service in 1948. It was an all-metal mid-wing monoplane with a tailwheel undercarriage. These aircraft performed a variety of roles, carrying out parachute drops in the 1956 Suez Crisis and providing transport support for a number of other British Military operations in the 1950s and 1960s, including the Malayan Emergency, operations in Aden and Sudan, etc. . Very Good.

Archive of 1952 Presidential Campaign Speeches

Springfield: Stevenson Campaign Headquarters. 1952. The transcriptions of 56 speeches given by Stevenson during the Presidential election season of 1952, beginning with his welcoming address to the Democratic National Convention on July 21, when he was speaking as Governor of the host state of Illinois and before he was drafted as the Democratic Party's Presidential candidate. The second speech here begins: "I accept your nomination and your program. I should have preferred to hear those words uttered by a stronger, wiser, better man than myself." 54 more speeches follow, all issued as news releases and most on Stevenson Campaign Headquarters letterhead. The final speech was given on November 1 (Election Day was November 4). Stevenson lost to Eisenhower, winning 44% of the popular vote but carrying only 9 states. A chronological record of Stevenson's entire first run for President: each release runs 3-10 pages, so hundreds of pages of Presidential politics from a half century ago, with equal opportunity to note how much things have changed and how much they have not. Photo-reproduced legal-sized sheets; minor edge wear; a few pages detached from corner staples; large coffee ring on the first page of the second news release. In all, a near fine lot, representing these speeches' first appearance in printed form. A number of them were published in book form by Random House prior to the 1952 election, with a Foreword by John Steinbeck. First Edition. No Binding.
