Typed letter signed to historian of physics Jagdish Mehra

Princeton, 1952. Einstein, Albert (1879-1955). Typed letter signed to historian of physics Jagdish Mehra (1931-2008). 1 page (air letter); laminated in plastic. Princeton, July 2, 1952. 304 x 177 mm. Slight wear along folds, a few tiny holes not affecting text, laminate cracked in one margin, but very good.Written in response to Mehra's 1952 essay, "Albert Einstien's Philosophy of Science and Life," which was awarded the Adams Essay Prize of the International Council of YMCAs. In the preface to his book Einstein, Physics and Reality (1999), Mehra recalls the circumstances giving rise to the letter:"At a rather young age I wrote an essay with the pretentious title "Albert Einstein's Philosophy of Science and Life" for an open essay competition . . . I gave a copy of it to Paul Arthur Schilpp (Editor of Albert Einstein: Philosopher-Scientist, Einstein's 70th birthday volume), who was visiting my university to give a lecture; he forwarded it to Einstein. One fine morning I received an aerogram, marked '122 Mercer Street, Princeton, N.J.'; it contained a one-line message: 'Dear Sir: Apart from too unwarranted praise I find your characterization of my convictions and personal traits quite veracious and showing psychological understanding. With kind greetings and best wishes, sincerely yours, Albert Einstein [signed].' Much more than the prize which I won for my essay, Einstein's letter greatly excited and inspired me for a long time" (p. ix).Accompanying the letter is a computer typescript of Mehra's essay.$5000

        East of Eden

New York: The Viking Pres, 1952 First edition, first printing. Publisher's light green cloth, lettered in navy, with red-brown spine label lettered in black; original pictorial dust jacket, with an illustration of a farm in a valley surrounded by mountains below a gradient sky, lettered in white and purple. Very good book, with some chipping to spine cloth and rubbing to bottom edge, bright spine, clean and fresh interior; unclipped dust jacket, with a hint of rubbing to the folds, tiny chip to the front flap, else fine. Overall, a bright and pleasing copy in a near fine dust jacket East of Eden features the intertwining stories of the Hamilton and Trask families. The former is based on Steinbeck's own genealogical lineage, while the latter is a representation of the Biblical Adam and his descendants. Considered by the author to be his masterpiece work, East of Eden is a culmination of the major themes and strengths of Steinbeck's other novels: an affinity for nature, the pervasive struggle between good and evil, familial relationships, and American history. During the writing process, Steinbeck chronicled the development of this novel with letters to his friend and former publisher Pascal Covici, the contents of which were published a year after Steinbeck's death as Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters. A lengthy yet popular tale originally intended by the author to teach his sons about the Salinas Valley in California, East of Eden has been adapted into a film, a musical, and a television miniseries.. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

In addition, the proof was issued without the colour frontispiece, and does not have the extra copyright notice stamped to some trade copies. Bound in publisher's light blue paper covers, titles printed in black to spine and upper. Some light tanning to the top of front cover, with only minor wear (considering its fragility as a paperback). Near-fine condition. A scarce item, housed in a collector's gilt-titled protective buckram case. Norton's The Borrowers was awarded the prestigious Carnegie Medal.

        East of Eden

New York: The Viking Press, 1952 First edition, limited issue of 1500 copies. Signed by Steinbeck on the limitation page. Additionally inscribed by Steinbeck on the front free endpaper to Leonard and Sylvia Lyons: "To Sylvia and Lenny / Shalom-aleichem / John Steinbeck / F.O. / forestiero [onoranze]". Publisher's dark green cloth, lettered in gilt, all edges red; in the publisher's acetate dust jacket; housed in the publisher's brown faux wood slipcase. Book fine; dust jacket with only some minor wear to the spine head; slipcase with some rubbing to the extremities, light sunning and a minor split to the top edge, else very clean and fresh. A very bright copy. Steinbeck inscribed this copy of East of Eden to American newspaper columnist Leonard Lyons, who was best known for his Broadway review column "The Lyons Den." Notaly, Lyons was admired for his column's strict adherence to truthful anecdotes only and his genuinely amicable personality that earned him the friendship of many celebrities and the access to private information that allowed him to maintain his policy of factual gossip only. East of Eden features the intertwining stories of the Hamilton and Trask families. During the writing process, Steinbeck chronicled the development of his novel with letters to his friend and former publisher Pascal Covici, the contents of which were published a year after Steinbeck's death as Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters. A lengthy yet popular tale originally intended by the author to teach his sons about the Salinas Valley in California in which they were raised, East of Eden has been adapted into a film, a musical, and a television miniseries.. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

        Original photography.

"Geneva / 12-15. Februar 1952". 17 x 11,7 cm. A stamp on the back stating: "Copyright / URS G. ARNI / REPORTER-PHOTOGRAPHIE / 15, R. CHARLES-GIRON TÉL 2.37.55 / GENÈVE". In pencil: "Nils Bohr / atomphysikkonferens / Geneva / 12-15. Februari 1952". The photo depicts an elderly Bohr with a briefcase under his arm in white shirt, tie and three piece suit. The picture shows Bohr participating in what would become one of the most important physic conferences in the second half of the 20th century. Here CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was established. Niels Bohr had been one of the central figures in the development of atomic theory in the early 20th century and was the father to the exceedingly important Copenhagen Interpretation. These merits made him the head of the theoretical division of CERN which was located in Copenhagen. "In Geneva the representatives of 12 European governments signed the convention setting up the interim organization, which came into being on 15 February 1952 with the title of "European Council for Nuclear Research", called "CERN" for short after the initials of the French title. Belgium, Denmark, France, the German Federal Republic, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Yugoslavia were then provisionally united to carry out nuclear research. During the whole lifetime of the interim CERN, the United Kingdom remained simply an observer, although the interest shown in the project by that country soon took the shape of new ideas, the provision of consultants and gifts."         Typed letter signed to historian of physics Jagdish Mehra

With kind greetings and best wishes, sincerely yours, Albert Einstein [signed].' Much more than the prize which I won for my essay, Einstein's letter greatly excited and inspired me for a long time" (p. ix).Accompanying the letter is a computer typescript of Mehra's essay. $5000
