MALTBY, Peg
Melbourne: Murfett, 1951. First Edition. A very scarce set of six volumes of the Ben and Bella series, each in first edition. Peg Maltby (1899-1984) worked in England as an illustrator of chocolate-box lids, before emigrating to Melbourne where she held successful exhibitions of her watercolours in the 1930s and 1940s. Her talent as a flower painter caught the eye of the publishers Murfetts who commissioned fifteen paintings of fairies and gypsies in woodland settings, which became her first book, Peg's Fairy Book. This work was overwhelmingly successful, selling 180,000 copies in five editions. She followed this success with the Pip and Pepita series, and then Ben and Bella. The titles in this collection are: Ben and Bella Down on the Farm; Ben and Bella in the Clouds; Ben and Bella in the Hills; Ben and Bella and the Apple Tree; Ben and Bella in the Gardens; and Forever Cuckoo! Six works, folio, illustrations; near fine in original coloured wrappers, preserved in a folding cloth box.

J R R Tolkien
Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1951. 2nd Edition. Original Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. J.R.R. Tolkien. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. A superb copy of an early printing of The Hobbit. The 1951, 5th overall printing, or the 1st printing of the 2nd Edition (1951). A Near Fine book, with a Near Fine dustjacket. The dustjacket shows beautifully, with only minor loss at the tips of the folds and edges. A few minor closed tears to the edges. The 5th impression dustjacket is original to the book, and has protected it well over the years. It is not price clipped, but show's no US or UK price. It is not stated as the 5th impression on the dustjacket, but is the 1st state with the Houghton Mifflin printed on the spine, no pricing, and the blurbs match the UK 5th impression. A scarce copy, imported from Allen & Unwin, still with the Allen and Unwin title page, not the Houghton Mifflin. Only the Houghton Mifflin stamped at the base of the spine differentiates this copy from the Allen & Unwin (A3c Hammond and Anderson). One of the original 1000 printed for the US and bound from November 1950 thru March 1953 (per Hammond and Anderson). The text block is clean and bright, with a little foxing and darkening to the first few pages, bound in the green colored original cloth featuring Tolkiens original Mountains and Dragon design stamped in dark blue, from the UK publisher. This is the only impression of the US 1st or 2nd Edition that features the original UK Mountain and Dragon design for the cover's. Shows no shelf wear or rubbing, no soiling to note, or bumped corners. … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Washburn, Patricia; Lewis Gomavitz (director), Beulah Zachary
Self published. Holograph diary, "Kuklapolitan Courier" yearbook, and INSCRIBED photograph belonging to "Kukla, Fran, and Ollie" fanatic Patricia Washburn. Archive contains a 108 page spiral-bound notebook filled cover to cover with holograph notations in blue and black ink by Chicago-based Washburn, who kept the diary to chronicle her reactions to the television puppet show "Kukla, Fran, and Ollie." The show ran from 1947 to 1957, featuring puppets ad-libbing interactions with the only regularly-featured human character, radio comedian Fran Allison. In her first entry on January 22, 1951, Washburn writes: "It seems very funny now to think that when I was first told about, 'the cute puppet show named Kukla, Fran + Ollie,' I thought it disgusting that adults should want to watch such childish antics, and vowed never to so much as even look at them. Now, although I still abhore [sic] all childish puppet programs, Kukla, Fran + Ollie and all the Kuklapolitans plus Jack + Linwood + all the others, have become a very real and precious part of my life." While originally created for children, the show drew a large, vocal adult fan base (as is highly evident here), with Orson Welles, John Steinbeck, and Tallulah Bankhead, among their ranks. Creator Bill Tillstrom went on to influence and mentor many well-known puppeteers, including Shari Lewis and the great Jim Henson. Seventeen additional pages laid in with both holograph notations and typescript episode descriptions. Included is an 8 x 10 inch vintage black and white photograph of Tillstrom holding the Ollie puppet, INSCRIBED to … [Click Below for Full Description]

MONSARRAT, Nicholas
First edition, 8vo; original cloth boards. The Cruel Sea follows the lives of a group of Royal Navy sailors fighting the Battle of the Atlantic during the Second World War. The novel, based on the author's experience of serving in corvettes in the North Atlantic in the Second World War, gives a matter-of-fact but moving portrayal of ordinary men learning to fight and survive in a violent, exhausting battle against the elements and a ruthless enemy. The book was made into a film in 1953 starring Jack Hawkins, Donald Sinden, Denholm Elliott, Stanley Baker and, Virginia McKenna. The screenplay by Eric Ambler omits some of Monsarrat's grimmest moments. Included with this copy of the book are signed publicity photographs taken for film of Jack Hawkins and Donald Sinden. Very good, with a neat owners inscription to the front end paper, in a very good dust jacket with an area of loss to the top of the spine not affecting the lettering.

BLANCHOT Maurice
Paris: BLANCHOT Maurice. First edition, one advance (service de presse) copy.Very handsome and moving autograph inscription from Maurice Blanchot to his sister and mother : "Pour vous mes tres cheres, / ce livre, peut-etre dangereux à ecrire / peut-etre dangereux à lire, / parce que lie au lointain, / en toute affection et reconnaissance / Eze, le 24 Decembre 1951." A good copy. [Click Below for Full Description]
