Original architectural drawing, signed and inscribed, "For Alfred Eisenstaedt", London, November 14, 1951

Pen and ink on paper. 7-3/4 x 5-1/2 inches. Fine. Pen and ink on paper. 7-3/4 x 5-1/2 inches. Architectural Drawing by Hugh Casson to Photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt. This drawing, presented to the photographer, was done at an interesting time: Casson, an architect who had spent the war in the Camouflage Service had become Architecture Director for the successful 1951 Festival of Britain, and on the date of this drawing was only six weeks away from receiving a knighthood for his services. He subsequently became, his biographer states, "the best known architect in Britain", creating a number of prominent buildings, from the Elephant House at the London Zoo to an ambitious series of buildings for Cambridge University. He was elected President of the Royal Academy, and was a noted writer and television spokesman for architecture and the arts.

        Love In A Dry Season.

The Dial Press, New York 1951 - First edition of Foote's third novel which anticipates much of the subject matter of his monumental Civil War trilogy. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Dennis Cross from Shelby Foote 13 Oct 90." The recipient was a friend of Foote's. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Love in a Dry Season describes an erotic and economic triangle, in which two wealthy and fantastically unhappy Mississippi families, the Barcrofts and the Carrutherses, are joined by an open-faced fortune hunter from the North, a man whose ruthlessness is matched only by his inability to understand the people he tries to exploit and his fatal incomprehension of the passions he so casually ignites. Combining a flawless sense of place with a Faulknerian command of the grotesque, Foote's novel turns a small cotton town into a sexual battleground as fatal as Vicksburg or Shiloh, and one where strategy is no match for instinct and tradition.         BEAT THE DEVIL.

      J. B. Lippincott Company, (1951)., Philadelphia: - First edition. A REVIEW COPY with slip laid in. Helvick was the pseudonym of Claud Cockburn, a noted British radical journalist. Born in Peking, China, in 1904, he was the scion of an aristocratic family--one of his ancestors was the British commander who ordered the burning of the White House during the War of 1812 and his cousin was the novelist Evelyn Waugh. The book was made into a 1953 film directed by John Huston, with the screenplay by Huston and Truman Capote, and starring Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones and Gina Lollobrigida. Huston intended it to be a tongue-in-cheek spoof of "The Maltese Falcon" (1941), also directed by Huston, and other films of Film Noir-style that Huston himself had pioneered (Wikipedia). Near fine with light rubbing to the cover, light bump to top front cover, and faint offset to the endpapers. In a dust jacket which is about an eighth-inch short. We've informed that at least one other copy with a little shorter jacket has been cataloged, so perhaps publisher produced (Graham Gateson reported cataloged by Bauman Books) Also minor edge rubbing and soiling, and a few shallow chips to the spine ends and corners.         The Cruel Sea. [First Book Society Edition]. IN FULL MOROCCO

Cassell,, [1951]. 8vo., First Edition thus, with double-page map; handsomely bound in navy blue full morocco, sides with frame border, back with raised bands, second compartment lettered in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt, fore-edges lightly mottled else a most attractive copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. This edition was published simultaneously (September 1951) with the first edition. It is now scarce in its own right. The finest novel of the Royal Navy in WWII and a maritime classic. The story, based upon the author's own experiences, formed the basis of Charles Frend's notable feature film starring Jack Hawkins in one of his most memorable roles. So accurate is its depiction of the Battle of the Atlantic that it is one of the very few works of fiction admitted by Law to his standard bibliography The Royal Navy in World War Two. Law, 1865 (recording the first edition).

        Bestie del 500

Firenze: Vallechi Editore, 1951. This is an about very good hardcover copy in a good dust jacket. The jacket front and back panels are present, but spine of jacket mostly perished. The top edges of both panels chipped, the front more heavily. Very clean inside, however the paper is very acidic and the edges of the text pages have browned. Text in Italian. The book is illustrated with 21 original serigraphs by Mino Maccari. These are printed on a lighter, better quality paper. The colors are fesh and bright. Palazzeschi's fabulous creatures are playfully interpreted by Maccari, who also used two of the decorations for the front and back panel of the dust jacket. Two different illustrations have been applied directly to the paper-covered boards. There is one brief inscription in Italian from the period on the front endpaper. The headpieces and vignettes in black & white are also by Maccari. 11" high X 8" wide, 164 pages. . Hard Cover. Very Good/Good.

Two albums of autographs, letters and photos of German opera stars in the 1950's.

Two albums of autographs of major German opera stars in the 1950's dating from a period of reconstruction in post war German culture. The albums are a modern 'Liber Amicorum' comprising many autographic sentiments and letters dedicated to Richard O'Hagen, a Canadian diplomat with the Military Mission and clearly a music lover by his friends Walter and Gisela Stoll [walter was a singer]. A wealth of material almost all of it in German. Over some 60 pages with singers and others signing to the pages and also often including photos and postcards, including; an autograph letter from the conductor Hans Von Benda [1888-1972] Artistic Director of the Berlin Philharmonic from 1936 - 1939; a good many letters typed, signed from Heinrich Pflanzel [1903-1978] Austrian opera singer, as well as signed photos and sentiments; Walter Grossmann [bass], signed postcard and sentiment; Gustel Grossmann Autograph Musical Quotation (Wagner) and sentiment; Mathieu Ahlersmeyer [1896- 1979] German baritone , signed postcard; a charming and well-executed drawing and poem by a 'Lydia Schone'; Wolf Voelker, opera director; 3 typed letters signed and photograph - unsigned - of Walter Felsenstein [1901-1975] Austrian opera director and founder of the Berlin Komische Oper company in 1947; Alfred Hilgert, singer, several signed postcards one tagged 'Meistersinger 1948'; Josef Greindl [1912-1993] bass famous for his Wagnerian roles, sentiment and signed postcard; Ludwig Suthaus [1906-1971] heldentenor [three autographs, two to album pages and one signed postcard]; Margarethe Klose [1899 -1968] mezzo soprano and a regular at Bayreuth [signed typed note and signed photograph]; Rudolf Schock [1915-1986] German tenor and film actor signed sentiment; Gerhard Frei [1911-1989] baritone, signed sentiment and signed postcard; Irmgard Armgart [1908-1982] German soprano, signed sentiment; Wilhelm Walter Dicks, baritone, signed sentiment; Wieland and Wolfgang Wagner [signature to page and signed postcard respectively] co-directors of the Bayreuth Festival Theatre; Elfriede Trotschel [1913-1958] German soprano, signed sentiment to page; Elisabeth Schwarzkopf [1915-2006] German soprano signed to album page 'Bayreuth 1951'; Gerhard Unger [ 1916-2011] lyric tenor, signed to album page 'Bayreuth 1951'; Paul Kuen [1910-1997] tenor who appeared in Wagner & Bernd Aldenhoff [1908-1959] heldentenor both signed to page; Sigurd Bjorling [1907-1983] Swedish tenor signed to page; Marthe Modl [1912-2001] one of the great postwar Wagnerian sopranos, signed to page; Astrid Varnay [1918-2006] Wagnerian soprano signed to page; Gunther Treptow [1907-1981] tenor famous for Wagnerian roles; Frederick Dalberg [1907-1988] bass, signature to album page 'Bayreuth 1951'; Hans Hopf [1916-1993] leading postwar Wagnerian heldentenor, signature to page 'Bayreuth 1951'; Erich Kunz [1909-1995] Austrian baritone & Otto Edelmann [1917-2003] Austrian bass signatures to album page; Hans Renmar [1895-1961] Austrian baritone, signed photograph; Diana Eustrati [1916 ] Greek mezzo, sentiment signed to album page; Ferenc Fricsay [1914-1963] Hungarian conductor, 2 signed Christmas cards, signed album page & signed photograph; Annalies Kupper [1906-1987] German soprano signed postcard and album page with sentiment; Kathe Dorsch [1890-1957] German actress & Walter Franck [1896-1961] German actor sentiments signed to album page; Silvia Kind [1907-2002] postcard with message, signed. The second album is also dedicated by Walter and Gisela Stoll and is less full but contains letters and notes [both autograph and typewritten] of Boleslaw Barlog [1906-1999] stage, film and opera director who was at the centre of the revival of post war cultural life of Berlin; Michael Bohnen [1887-1965] German bass-baritone, and Intendant of the Stadtischen Oper Berlin until dubious accusations of a Nazi past caused him to lose his post [two signed photos, one in role; Walter Franck [1896-1961] German stage and film actor, who played the mad scientist in the German science fiction film Master of the World (1934) signed photograph; Donald Bell [1934-] Canadian bass baritone [signed postcard]; Gerhard Stolz [1926-1979] tenor best known for his Wagnerian roles, postcard signed verso. In addition there are several signed postcards / pages which I can't make out but a scholar of the period would o doubt be able to decipher. There are also some menus, newspaper clippings, programmes etc. All in all some 80 odd signed letters, postcards, album pages by some of the leading and supporting singers and conductors of the German opera theatre in the early 1950's. A terrific archive of a period when Germany was getting back on its cultural feet in the post war, Cold War era. The first album is in VG order with decorative cover and the second, the cover is detached at spine but still holding. The vast majority of postcards and photographs in both albums are in corner mounts and removeable and all are in VG condition. Put together with care and affection for a man who was clearly a lover of opera. £495
