        Comment voudriez-vous voir R. L. Dupuy

1951. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good. Unique collection of 74 watercolors, ink drawings, collages and mixed media playful caricatures of a Parisian advertising executive, presumably by members of his creative staff. Most of the individual send-ups are imaginative and amusing; the cumulative effect, though, is truly extraordinary in the sheer variety and range of the works. As a whole the album honors not merely a particular individual, but the human creative spirit! Thus we have a Soviet Dupuy, an angelic Dupuy, an overworked Dupuy, a gaucho Dupuy, a scout Dupuy, a wandering eye Dupuy, a lolling Dupuy; he is depicted as a painter, a mariner, a general, and on and on. These various roles assigned to him scarcely suggest the richness of ideas of the particular artwork. In just one drawing, showing the executive in a bathtub, we see floating atop the water the names of products, presumably ones he promoted, and other names spraying over him from the showerhead. Dupuy, based on the wealth of images we have of him, was a quintessential Frenchman in his appearance; we can also surmise that he was beloved, if not also feared a bit, and certainly, he had to have had a charisma, for few businessmen have probably ever received such an effortful and remarkable tribute as represented by this manuscript. The folio measures 33 by 28 cm, 13 by 11 inches. With a dust jacket that at its center has a cameo relief of Dupuy himself. The DJ, now protected with mylar, has use creases, minor spotting and toning. The leaves are all clean, and the album is tight.

        C. 1951-1954 Photographic Album Recording the Building of a Western-Engineered Milling Facility in Egypt With Many Pictures Identified and Depicting Social, Sporting, Political Activities in Cairo and Alexandria Egypt During the Nasser Era.

Cairo 1951 - Album with approxmately 280 + photographs; mounted with photo-corners only, not glued down; many with identifiers on back, dating the photograph and naming the participants; many photographs of social activities, state and company dinners, tennis matches, other sporting activities where apparently these people went to be entertained in Cairo and Alexandria, Egypt; a mixing of Middle-Eastern and Western-style events, with some military and political leaders socially melding with the engineers and workers on this project; with views of the Egyptian countryside as well as of the plant; (with) a book in Arabic, evidently promoting the new facility, with black and white photographs; also including about 30-40 photographs of family outings, evidently in Europe, Italy and other places where family and friends may have had leave from building the project; various formats, mostly snapshot size, however there are many 3" x 5" and larger, even a couple of 7"x 9" size; all contained in a faux leather album, with a very worn spine and coming disbound; photographs clear, well-taken and very well preserved, recording a little-known aspect of Western business and industrial development in the Middle East, with the participation of wives and families while a project was being completed and during the Nasser revolutionary era; We note that some of the equipment, possibly for power generation, bears the Babcock & Wilcox name, and also equipment from Kohorn, who were textile equipment manufacturers; these names are visible on the apparatus pictured in the accompanying brochure.         [Original Art and Proof for]: The Enchanted Castle

Boston: Barry Humphries. 1951. Original pencil and gouache artwork accompanied by two cover proof sheets and a first edition of the book. The art, which measures 20"x 26", is painted directly onto an illustration board with the spine panel painted separately and applied to the board. Near fine plus with a few rubbed spots, tape remnants, and ink marks. The two color cover proofs are near fine with a few creases, and the book is fine in near fine dustwrapper with a bit of wear at the extremities and some sunning to the spine. Neff (1902-1993) was a painter, muralist, illustrator, and printmaker who worked with the Treasury Relief Art Project and briefly served as Director of the Federal Arts Project in Cleveland in 1937. In addition to working as a commercial artist and book illustrator, he gained some national recognition as chairman of the Cleveland Ufology Project lecturing on UFO phenomenon and exposing fraud when he found it. While Neff is not credited on the published dustwrapper, as he is on the original art, the rear flap copy is entirely (and strangely) devoted to "The Decorative Jacket" with four paragraphs describing the joint effort made by the writer and artist to develop a compelling cover concept. The text explains that the illustration depicts the battle between good and evil as shown by "Satan's insidious attack on the vulnerable castle, supported by his host of red demons conjured up from the shadows" and "the Good Fairy's valiant defense, aided by her kindly elves born of the bright sunshine and blue sky" which have "identical counterparts in the flesh-and-blood characters of the modern mansion of the actual story." The art for an obscure but interesting book from an equally obscure but interesting artist, representing a much closer collaboration than is usually found between author and jacket illustrator. OCLC locates no copies of this book. .

An exceptional copy none-the-less, inscribed by Henry Miller to his ex wife: "For June / - to read in / moments / of despair / Henry / 10 /16 /56". It was Miller's custom to send books to June & Siddhartha was Miller's favorite & he probably sent her at least 2 copies of Siddhartha over the years. Rarely do these books surface but they on occasion do. Often thought of as a Sixties book, Siddhartha was actually a decade early; a precursor to the major societal & philosophical changes to follow & a cardinal influence during the Sixties & beyond.         THE PREPARATION OF PROGRAMS FOR AN ELECTRONIC DIGITAL COMPUTER, with Special Reference to the EDSAC and the Use of a Library of Subroutines

Cambridge, Mass: Addison-Wesley, 1951 A Pioneering Book From The Dawn Of The Computer Age. A Review Copy in Dustwrapper Of The First Practical Text Book On Digital Computing. First Edition. An especially Fine Copy in a previously unrecorded dustwrapper. Tall 8vo., pp [14] incl. 2 full-page, photo illus. before title-page (one on back of half-title), 167, [3]. Light, red RSM diagonally across half-title 'BOOK REVIEW COPY'. Original brown cloth. Light-brown, plain dustwrapper which, due to its minimal wear, slight browning & exact fit, has all the appearances of having been issued with the book, allowing the covers of the book to have been preserved in 'as-new' condition. A narrow section of the dustwrapper spine-panel has been removed, presumably to allow the book to be identified without removing the plain unprinted dustwrapper & discarding it which was likely the case in every case. Internally fresh & clean. Excellent fine copy. Remarkable as this title ended up primarily in libraries to be marked stamped, coded & pocketed accordingly. The first generally published text on computer programming. Refs: (Williams, Hist. Computing Technology, p. 337; see also pp. 331-38). Lee, Computer Pioneers, pp. 730-35. OOC/Origins of Cyberspace 1030. Working with the EDSAC at Cambridge, Wilkes used a symbolic assembly language [Assembler] which was further developed by Wheeler under Wilkes' management in 1949. With Gill, they developed the concept of subroutines in programs to create reusable modules & as a team produced the first textbook on "The Preparation of Programs for an Electronic Digital Computer". This breakthrough was seminal to the very conceptualization of formalized "software" development; a term that was just a spec of dust on the horizon.. 1st Edition.

Faber Book News 1951 - Two pages of electrostencilled publicity mailing. The first page being an introduction (almost certainly written by Eliot) and the second page containing the poem, "Cat Morgan Introduces Himself". The extremely rare first appearance of Cat Morgan Introduces Himself, which was incorporated into "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" as the final poem from the 1953 (11th impression) edition onwards. The two page flyer was issued with Faber's Autumn and Winter Catalogue for 1951. The introductory page states, "The front cover of Faber & Faber's new Autumn and Winter catalogue bears an attractive drawing by Margaret Wolpe of the portico of 24, Russell Square. On the back cover you will find a [picture of a black cat] approaching. He is advancing to take up his favourite seat, cuddled up against and protected by the door-scraper. Morgan, for that is his name, is the Faber & Faber cat. We were astonished to find the biographical note written in verse, but perhaps this is not surprising if one considers the literary atmosphere in which he has passed so much of his life." The following poem carries the footnote to the effect that it may be reproduced without permission, and was according to Gallup "widely reprinted in various newspapers". It was issued under Eliot's name in the Animal's Magazine, and subsequently as a broadside by Donald Gallup entitled "Cat Morgan's Apology" in 1953, in an edition of 30 copies. Not listed in Gallup though referred to E2g (Gallup's 1953 Broadsheet). Copies of the poem are present in the British Library and as part of the Hayward bequest in King's College, Cambridge, though both seem to lack the introductory page. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1951. First edition and First Printing. 8vo, publisher’s original black cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine and in the original dustjacket featuring Salinger’s photo on rear cover credited to Lotte Jacobi and $3 price correctly positioned on front flap. 277 pp. A good and honest copy showing some use, but otherwise well preserved. The dustjacket with some evidence of age-wear at the extremities and with a chip at the bottom of the spine panel, the bottom of the dustjacket sometime trimmed slightly to clean the bottom edge. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING OF AN AMERICAN ICONIC WORK AND A 20TH CENTURY LITERARY CLASSIC. J.D. Salinger’s first and still, most famous work.. Salinger tapped into a common and necessary theme in American literature with his unhappy teenage character, Holden Caulfield, who runs away from his boarding school as part of his disgust with 'phoniness'. Caufield's feelings and the idiom in which he communicates them have made the book a symbol of purity and sensitivity to generations of readers and has insured that it will remain a particularly coveted title in modern literature.

        Catcher in the Rye, The

London: Hamish Hamilton, 1951. First Impression. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine+. First UK Edition (First published in Great Britain 1951) of the author's masterwork. 8vo; 254pp. Publisher's French blue cloth, the spine lettered silver; in Fritz Wegner's pictorial dust jacket priced on the front flap 10s/6d. A Near Fine copy with just a shade of fading to the spine (but the lettering undiminished), a bit of speckling to the top edge, and a short closed tear (text completely untouched) and associated creasing to the top edge of two pages; in a Near Fine or better jacket, bright and vibrant, the the spine's crown lightly rubbed, the back panel dust-soiled with several dime-sized pink stains. Even after more than fifty years The Catcher in the Rye speaks to readers through the freshness of Holden's voice. . . . [Salinger's] words even have the power to transfigure some readers' lives, at least once with horrible consequences. On 8 December 1980 Mark David Chapman associated Holden's view of “phonies” with John Lennon. After assassinating the former Beatle across the street from Central Park, Chapman sat down, pulled out a copy of Catcher and waited for the police to arrive." (Literary Encyclopedia) Note: Yet another example of the value to be found in the graphically superior designs of most UK editions of American authors' works (our specialty). With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. Langley Searles, / with compliments of / Clark Ashton Smith / Dec. 12th, 1951." 563 copies printed. A selection of forty poems, ably showing off his brand of the fantastic, which was heavily influenced by the French Decadents. His sixth collection of poems and the first of three issued by Arkham House. "Lyric poetry offered Smith (as it did Lovecraft and, arguably Poe, as well) a purer form for the expression of his chief literary genius, which was the painting of fantastic tableaus, vignettes and landscapes with little need for character, dialogue or action." - Robert Eldridge. Mild bumps to spine ends, mild tanning to paste-downs, else a fine copy in nearly fine dust jacket with mild age-darkening to spine lettering and touch of rubbing to spine ends and corner tips.
