La Muerte y la brújula. [Death And The Compass]. Dedication Copy

Buenos Aires: Emecé Editores, Colección Novelistas Argentinos Contemporáneos, 1951 The Dedication Copy Of This Landmark Title Story. First edition. Original pictorial wrappers showing very light use. [Helft p.74; Becco 46], 8vo, The inscription in English reads: "To Mandie from your lazy friend / Jorge Luis Borges - 1951". Nine tales reappear in this collection, all revised & corrected for this edition. Hombre de la esquina rosada, Borges points out, was written influenced by American movies & Robert Louis Stevenson. Emma Zunz "está redactada con palabras opacas, in a style of scrupulous meanness, como dijo Joyce de sus Dubliners. (it is written with opaque words], as Joyce had said about his Dubliners). Funes el memorioso "es el que menos me desagrada." (is the one that least despleases me). Its source is De Quincey's Palimpsest. Borges wrote it when he felt cornered by the universe: "me sentí acosado del universo".La espera is an urban tale, from a true police report read to Borges by his friend Alfredo Doblas.La form a de la espada & Tema del traidor y del héroe pretend to show a romantic view of Ireland. El jardín de los senderos que se bifurcan is a type of crime fiction. Borges hopes that the meaning of it will not come to the reader until the very last paragraph. La muerte y la brújula takes place in Buenos Aires, in spite of the Nordic or German street names. The volume is dedicated to: Mandie Molina Vedia, one of Borges' great, life long loves.. Signed by Author. 1st Edition.

        Hangsaman

London: Victor Gollancz. 1951. First. First English edition. Fine in very good or better dustwrapper with a few small nicks and tears, and a small, faint splash mark on the spine. Author's third book, and second novel, and her first novel to deal with the darker regions of human nature and personality. Inscribed by the author to her in-laws, the parents of her husband, Stanley Edgar Hyman: "For Lulu and Dad with all my love -- Shirley." The recipients were, along with her own parents, the dedicatees of Jackson's Life Among the Savages. Jackson was a bit of a recluse and books inscribed by her are uncommon, especially with any kind of association. .

Text printed in red and black with red and green initials; lithographs editioned by Mourlot. Limited edition copy 210 of 210. Van Dongen, a Dutch painter joined the fauvist movement in 1906, became a fashionable portraitist after World War I, but even in that medium he gave up all constraint -- he left a pitiless interpretation of Anatole France (our author here) as well as others, condemning a period and a class. Full green morocco, covers and spine inlaid with light green, tan and gray morocco, ruled in colors and gilt, all edges gilt, green suede doublures, uniform morocco edged chemise.         Porius

Macdonald bound by Bayntun Rivier 1951 - A gorgeous and very rare edition, sumptuously bound in leather and cloth, printed on special paper with sewn signatures, numbered and signed. This is number 82 of only 200 copies offered for sale in 1951, and with a grand looking broody photograph of the author as the frontispiece. This great messy novel was cut by about a third at the editors behest, so although this cannot ever be regarded as the true author text it is nonetheless an important Powys collectable. The binding and care that has been taken ensures this will last for centuries. This copy has been used a bit, the marbled endpapers are very slightly grubby, and there are some minor wrinkles to a few text pages. But this curiosity survives all complaint for the true Powysian; it is somehow reflective of the author that it ever achieved publication in this form at all. It is a true first edition, and with the brilliantly emphatic signature sprawling across the limitation page, in bluest Quink ink, this bleeding chunk of a masterpiece has a very special allure.         Typographica (First Series) Issues 4-16 (1951-1959)

Lund Humphries, London 1951 - A remarkably good set of the first series of this typographical journal subtitled 'A review of typography and the graphic arts.', missing only the first three volumes. Given that they are paper/card covered (all with fold backs) and were published in the 1950s, their condition is amazing. There is some spine fading to some issues and rubbing and/or nicking to some edges but in general they are bright, clean and tightly bound. Number 16 has a curious erosion to bottom front, which cannot be identified but still sound. A heavy and valuable set which will incur increased postage charges.         Physical studies of nucleic acid. Offprint, Signed by Wilkins & Gosling.

1951 - Crystalline Structure of DNA Wilkins, Maurice (1916- ); Gosling, Raymond; & Seeds, W. E. Physical studies of nucleic acid. Nucleic acid: An extensible molecule? Offprint from Nature 167 (May 12, 1951). 8vo. 7pp. Text illustrations. 213 x 140 mm. Original printed wrappers. Fine copy, signed by Gosling and Wilkins on the front wrapper. First Separate Edition. On 12 May 1950, at a meeting of the Faraday Society, Wilkins obtained from the Swiss scientist Rudolf Signer a sample of sodium thymonucleate, an improved DNA extract that preserved the long, fragile molecule's structure. While preparing part of this sample for study, Wilkins noticed that every time he touched the stuff with the tip of a glass rod and then drew the rod away, "I had spun a very thin fibre of DNA, almost invisible, like a filament of spider web." The fibres seemed so perfect and uniform that the molecules in them must have been neatly aligned alongside one another. Examined under a microscope, in polarized light, the fibres behaved as though they were made up of well-ordered crystals. (Judson, Eighth Day of Creation [1996], p. 78) Wilkins, who had no training in x-ray diffraction, took his DNA fibers to Raymond Gosling, a graduate student in physics at King's College who was then performing crystallography studies of ram's sperm using an antiquated x-ray apparatus in the basement of the college's chemistry department. Because the apparatus was not well suited to fiber work, several dozen of Wilkins's fibres had to be bundled together, in a tiny tungsten-wire frame where they could be tightened like a violin bow, to constitute a large enough specimen for the soft focus of the x-ray tube. Wilkins and Gosling remembered that Bernal, fifteen years before, had got the first good x-ray patterns from protein crystals by keeping them wet. Accordingly, they maintained the DNA fibres at high humidity. They got striking patterns, with many spots, sharp and detailed, far better than ever before seen from DNA, and for the first time unmistakably from a substance in crystalline form. (Judson, pp. 78-79)Thus began Wilkins's x-ray diffraction studies of DNA, which would gain for him a share of the 1962 Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine (the other two recipients of the 1962 prize were James Watson and Francis Crick). However, for several reasons-inadequate x-ray equipment being one of them-Wilkins put the DNA crystallography studies on hold for fifteen months, resuming them seriously only after the arrival at King's of Rosalind Franklin, a biologist highly skilled in x-ray diffraction techniques. However, Wilkins did publish "a couple of notes" (Judson, p. 79) on his researches in late 1950 and early 1951. The first, entitled "Ultra-violet microspectrographic studies of nucleoproteins and crystal of biological interest," was a preliminary notice that "went little further than the work of Torbjˆrn Caspersson ten years earlier" (Judson, p. 651); the second, which we are offering here in offprint form, gives the details of Wilkins and Gosling's initial investigations. Published with it is a paper by Mary and Robert Fraser entitled "Evidence on the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid from measurements with polarized infra-red radiation." Olby, The Path to the Double Helix, pp. 332-35 (including illustration taken from Wilkins & Gosling's paper). Magill, The Nobel Prize Winners: Physiology or Medicine, pp. 863-68.         Spartacus [Signed]

New York: Howard Fast, 1951. First Edition. In a 1951 pre-publication letter, Fast explained that when his publisher at Little, Brown and Company was forced to resign, the novel 'Spartacus' was thrown out with him. In the coming weeks he found "that no other firm would publish this or any other book written by me, and thereby I am forced to do what certain other authors have had to do at moments of crisis in America. I must either find a way to publish my own work, or give up writing." Given the political temper of the McCarthy era, Fast had a small number of copies bound, priced at $5.00, which he numbered, signed, and sold to subscribers in an effort to help finance the regular edition of his novel (price at $2.50). & & Easily Fast's most enduring work, a contribution Walter Rideout credited for showing "how an already established form, the traditional historical novel, may be used for radical ends" (p.275). Basis for Stanley Kubrick's Oscar-winning film (1960), with a screenplay written by Dalton Trumbo and starring Kirk Douglas and Laurence Olivier. RIDEOUT p.300. Pre-publication subscriber's edition, self-published by Fast and sold prior to the regular edition. Octavo (21cm); olive cloth (one of four variants, with no established priority), with titles stamed in gilt on spine; dustjacket; 364pp, [1]. Numbered and signed by the author on the front endpaper, with the original subscriber's card laid in. Dustjacket is unclipped ($5.00), lightly edgeworn, with a few tears and attendant creasing to upper edge, light sunning and a few tiny splash marks to spine; Very Good+.
