        [Photo Album]: Sun Valley, Idaho

1951-1952. Large oblong quarto. 310 photographic snapshots mounted on blank black pages, all but a few are silver gelatin prints, various sizes, ranging from 2.5" x 2.5" to 7" x 9.5", most are somewhere in between, virtually all are captioned, often in some detail. A few have e0ither fallen from their mounts (but are present), a few pages have been cut away removing the caption and image but there are several additional loose images that might have been in those places. Additionally included are a few commercial postcards, a drawing of the album's compiler (made by a young soldier on a train), a clipping, and a few other relevant small scraps. Overall near fine with nice, well-captioned images. Assembled by a waitress who worked at a resort in the resort city of Sun Valley, Idaho (adjacent to the city of Ketchum) in 1951 and 1952, consisting of a voluminous selection of well-composed images, mostly of young people in their 20s (the compiler looks to be a little older than most of the others, perhaps in her mid-30s) at work, and at play while swimming, rock climbing, spelunking, drinking and barbecuing, consorting with deer, antelope, and sled-dogs, in very deep snow (sometimes as much as 15 feet according to the captions), with snow sculptures, sleighing and tobogganing, camping, and generally having a wonderful time. Perhaps not surprisingly there are a generous selection of skiing photographs, both downhill and cross-country skiing at night, and including many of the young staff skiing in (intentionally) ludicrous costumes. A small but interesting selection are of the girls traveling on a sightseeing excursion to Salt Lake City, Nebraska, and Denver. The compiler seems to have been from Chicago, and laid into the back is a contemporary article in color from the Chicago Sunday Tribune about two of the waitresses who were using the opportunity provided by making successful attempts to become serious competitive skiers.A splendid "slice-of-life" vernacular photograph album with spectacular views and unlike other albums of the time (by tourists) provide interesting and unusual insights into the itinerant lifestyle of young people who worked in resorts in the early 1950s. .

Numerical Inverting of Matrices of High Order, I-II.

The American Mathematical Society, 1947; [1951]. Rare offprints of two of von Neumann's major papers. "The 1947 paper by John von Neumann and Herman Goldstine, 'Numerical Inverting of Matrices of High Order' (Bulletin of the AMS, Nov. 1947), is considered as the birth certificate of numerical analysis. Since its publication, the evolution of this domain has been enormous." (Bultheel & Cools, The Birth of Numerical Analysis). "Just when modern computers were being invented (those digital, electronic, and programmable), John von Neumann and Herman Goldstine wrote a paper to illustrate the mathematical analyses that they believed would be needed to use the new machines effectively and to guide the development of still faster computers. Their foresight and the congruence of historical events made their work the first modern paper in numerical analysis. Von Neumann once remarked that to found a mathematical theory one had to prove the first theorem, which he and Goldstine did concerning the accuracy of mechanized Gaussian elimination - but their paper was about more than that. Von Neumann and Goldstine described what they surmised would be the significant questions once computers became available for computational science, and they suggested enduring ways to answer them" (J. P. Grcar, 'John von Neumann's Analysis of Gaussian Elimination: the Founding of Modern Numerical Analysis,' SIAM Review 53 (2011), 607-682). "The concluding Chapter 7 interprets the rounding error analysis. Von Neumann asked his readers to continue from his residual bound 'several different ways'. He guided his readers by explaining the appropriate conclusion shows the computed result is exact for some perturbation of the initial data. This is the 'backward' interpretation which many people think von Neumann did not understand. The paper closes by evaluating the residual bound for 'random' matrices, and by counting arithmetic operations. "In sum, von Neumann's paper contains much that is unappreciated or at least unattributed to him. The contents are so familiar, it is easy to forget von Neumann is not repeating what everyone knows. He anticipated many of the developments in the field he originated, and his theorems on the accuracy of Gaussian elimination have not been encompassed in half a century. The paper is among von Neumann's many firsts in computer science. It is the first paper in modern numerical analysis, and the most recent by a person of von Neumann's genius" (Kees Vuik, Birthday of Modern Numerical Analysis, http://ta.twi.tudelft.nl/users/vuik/wi211/num_anal.html). Von Neumann & Goldstine's 1947 paper is here accompanied by its sequel, also in offprint form (the 1947 paper comprises Chapters I-VII, the sequel Chapter VIII-IX). In the sequel, the authors reassess the error estimates proved in the first part from a probabilistic point of view. Hook & Norman, Origins of Cyberspace 957 (first part only); Goldstine, The Computer from Pascal to von Neumann, pp.290-91; Nash, A History of Scientific Computing, p.23; DSB, XIV, p.92. Together two offprints, Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society, vol. 53, no. 11, 8vo, pp. [ii], 1021-1099 (241 x 152 mm); Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society, vol. 2, no. 2, 8vo, pp. [i], 188-202 (242 x 150 mm).         Archive of over 80 Television Patents, File copies from NYC Patent attorney

United States Patent Office, Washington DC 1951 - An archive of more than 80 patents related to early television, dating from 1923 to 1951, most from the earlier period. The archive is from prominent New York patent law firm Pennie Davis, Marvin and Edmonds, Counsellors At Law, 105 Broadway, New York with a number of the patents so marked. Sizes are roughly 7 ¾ x 11 5/8 inches, with most stapled. Occasional tearing, 3 hole punching, detached pages, etc as befits used file copies. The reproduction processes vary, but many appear to be period letterpress copies, stamped in red ink with reference numbers. A list is available on request with inventor last name and date issued. The whole offered in a custom clamshell box. Boards. While far from a complete representation of television patents during the period, many prominent inventors are represented (Baird, Ives, Zworykin), and what makes the archive even more interesting are the companies the inventors worked for - indicating who was actively pursuing the field during this period. The original collection was that of Jihei Kano, the museum's founder. He became expert in the art of the Nara period in Japan and, consequently, in the relics of the Sui and T'ang Dynasties of China. Mr. Kano began collecting early in the 20th century when a great number of the ancient tombs of the T'ang Dynasty were excavated at Lo-Lang (also known as Lo-Yang) in present-day North Korea. During that ancient dynasty Lo-Lang was under Chinese control. Many of the gold, silver and bronze objects first collected by Mr. Kano were documented in the 1930 publication, Hakkaku-Cho. He subsequently acquired relics from Yin Dynasty tombs. In 1935, to preserve his treasures, he established the Hakkaku Art Museum. To commemorate the opening of the museum, he published Hakkaku Kikkinshu (Hakkaku Collection for Bronzes). In the years after opening the museum Mr. Kano added relics from the Yin and Chou Dynasties as well as from the Period of the Warring States. To commemorate his 90th birthday in 1951 he selected 60 objects from his collection and published them in the present volume. The objects illustrated mainly are old bronzes of the Yin Dynasty and applied art objects of the T'ang Dynasty. The Hakkaku Art Museum also contains a welath of objects from the period of the Warring States, the middle of the Chou Dynasty, and the Han and Six Dynasties.

        Correspondence

1951, 1952, 1970. One typed letter signed, one autograph letter signed, and one autograph postcard signed by the controversial author of Worlds in Collision, Earth in Upheaval, and others. Velikovsky's books suggested that Earth's history was defined more by sudden catastrophes than by slow evolution. They became quite popular during the 1960s, when conventional wisdom of all sorts was being called into question. Each letter is written to a Mr. Tereshchenko: the first refutes two notions in a book by "Beaumont;" the second letter assures the recipient that the second volume of Ages [in Chaos] will be published and is being held up by Velikovsky himself; the third voices intent to send along a 1946 publication and explains that Ages in Chaos grew to a tetralogy. "Beaumont" is William Comyns Beaumont, a British author whom some claimed had advanced the notions put forward by Velikovsky a generation earlier. The first letter is secured across the midpoint fold with tape; very good. The second letter is on airmail paper; folded and opened as designed; else fine. The postcard is fine. Correspondence, or any autograph material, by Velikovsky is quite scarce, especially with significant content. No Binding.

Le ressassement éternel EDITION ORIGINALE Grand papier ENVOI AUTOGRAPHE

Paris: Les éditions de minuit, 1951. Fine. Les éditions de minuit, Paris 1951, 11,5x18,5cm, relié. - Original, one of 990 copies Ghaldwill Edition, only leading copies after 10 pure fil.binding half maoquin blue, smooth back, when golden tail, covered with marbled paper, guards and contreplats blue paper covers and spine preserved ( slightly back and irradiated with small gaps filled), gilded head, binding signed Goy & Vilaine.Exceptionnel and touching handwritten dedication signed by the author to his mother and to his sister: "To my very dear these pages, alas old well in any condition. Mauritius. / Before the beginning there was the new beginning which is a fascination of light, an image of anything and we empty the heart of the eternal rehashing ".Page false title which include the autograph dedication of the author slightly and marginally ombrée.Marguerite Blanchot, renowned organist Chalon Cathedral, remained all his life in the family home with his mother and aunt. "It will gradually become, for the family, as the memory of origins." Very close to Mauritius, she regularly corresponded with the writer who demonstrates her great recognition for his dedication to their helpless mother. If the intense affection Blanchot for his mother and sister shines in dedications of it, we know almost nothing about their relationship. In the only biographical essay on Blanchot, Christophe Bident reveals however: "Marguerite Maurice Blanchot worshiped his brother very proud of him, (...) it attached great importance to his political ideas (...) She read a lot (.... .) They phoned corresponded. Remotely, they shared the same natural authority, the same concern for discretion. " Blanchot address him indeed many books from his library, now with her continuous intellectual bond. As for the passion of Blanchot for his mother, it was the turn of his work that we discover the finest examples: "Maybe the power of the mother figure she borrows its radiance to the same power fascination, and one might say that if the mother carries this fascinating attraction is as appearing when the child lives entirely under the gaze of fascination, it concentrates in itself all the powers of enchantment ".Cultivant absolute discretion, Blanchot pushed the art of erasing into his handwritten dedications generally brief and almost always written on cards attached to rare books which he gave to his close friends. In contrast, in these precious autograph dedication of the authors to his mother and sister, Blanchot offers in all its fragility, revealing a hitherto unknown intimacy. Beautiful copy fully established. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

While far from a complete representation of television patents during the period, many prominent inventors are represented (Baird, Ives, Zworykin), and what makes the archive even more interesting are the companies the inventors worked for - indicating who was actively pursuing the field during this period.
