Manuscrit du discours de Paul Claudel pour sa Grand-Croix de la Légion d'honneur.

      - 1 manuscrit autographe 2 pp. ½ In-folio 17/10/1951 Marge sup. mal coupée. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

(Jerome David) Salinger's (1919-2010) first and only novel, the Holden Caulfield book he'd worked on for nearly a decade. This novel was a bestseller in its time and is still considered one of the classics of American literature, it continues to sell about a quarter-million copies per year. It endures as talismanic to discontented youth and perfectly captures the voice of the author, reflecting his own troubled school days. "What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though." (N.B., quote from the Salinger.)___DESCRIPTION: Original black cloth covered boards with gilt lettering to backstrip, octavo size (8" by 5.5"), pagination: [i-vi] [1-2] 3-277, first edition, first printing, in original pictorial first issue dust jacket showing original price of $3.00, photo of author on back panel has the top of his head right at the top edge (no space).___CONDITION: A very good copy, the boards are clean and still a rich black hue, no sunning to backstrip with the gilt lettering still bright, very minimal shelfwear to the lower edges and only slightly bumped at lower corners, upper corners are straight; internally bright with only minimal age-toning to the outer edges and a few faint odd stains, endpapers with a few light stains, a square text block with solid hinges, no cocking to spine, and other than a small notation in ink at the top left of the verso of the rear free endpaper free of prior owner markings. The unclipped dust jacket is bright, the backstrip and covers are all of one tone with some light sunning to the upper approximately 2" of the front panel; the jacket has been lightly restored by a professional conservator (contact us for details or photos), the jacket is now near fine on the outside, with some toning inside; overall a very good copy in a very good jacket. An essential book for any collector of important American literature.___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.       Macdonald, London 1951-1969.(). A first edition set of Williamson's celebrated semi-autobiographical sequence of fifteen novels which explore the fortunes of one family during the first half of the twentieth century. 8vo. Several top edges lightly dust marked, with just a hint of light partial browning to two or three free endpapers. Former owner name and date neatly inked to the front free endpaper of each volume, in each instance accompanied by a small area of surface abrasion (possibly a result of somebody trying to obscure this signature), but the impact is extremely minor. One volume ('The Gale of the World') also contains a tiny dealer plate to the front pastedown. An extremely crisp set in the original James Broom-Lynne-designed pictorial dust wrappers, none of which have been price-clipped. A number exhibit a little minor rubbing and chafing to the spine ends, and some occasional minor dust soiling to the predominantly white rear panels. The publisher's red spine panel colouring to 'Love and the Loveless' is faded as is so often the case although this example much less so that is customary. 'The Golden Virgin' is complete with the uncommon 'Daily Mail Book of the Month' wraparound band. The only dust wrapper that is graded below very good is 'Donkey Boy' which exhibits some taped reinforcement and restoration. A very nice example of an increasingly scarce set - a Burgess Ninety-Nine.. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: Very Good

I then discerned that Carson McCullers was on board the ship and asked her to autograph it. She was partially crippled, and very peculiar looking & acting. She and her husband were on their way to Vienna, where, as he remarked "they could live much cheaper than in New York." Emily Stewart." The play won the Donaldson Award and the New York Drama Critics' Prize for Best American Play of the 1950 season. An exceptionally well-preserved copy with interesting provenance. Carson and husband Reeves, re-married at this point for seven tumultuous years, were on their way to Europe; 20 months after this book was inscribed, Reeves died of an overdose of sleeping pills in their Paris apartment, after trying to convince Carson to commit suicide with him.         Alpha Iota Chapter of Theta Sigma Phi. Yearbook 1950-1951. [Cover title]: AI: Nineteen Fifty - Nineteen Fifty-one

Alpha Iota Chapter of Theta Sigma Phi, (Long Beach, California) 1951 - Oblong folio. Measuring 19.5" x 8.25". Plastic spiral bound handpainted and hand-lettered card covers with plastic overlay. Light edgewear, a few of the affixed elements (probably photographs) are lacking, a couple of others have become loose or detached, but otherwise nice and near fine. A completely handmade, well-designed, and very attractive yearbook made for a sorority chapter, in Long Beach, California, probably at Los Angeles-Orange County State College (now California State University, Long Beach). A long introductory poem about the Chapter's activities is signed "R.P.L." which seems to indicate the member Rosemary Leal who is listed elsewhere in the book. Each page has been carefully and artfully handlettered, usually with affixed photographs, invitations to events, clippings, or letters indicating the various activities of the sorority. The yearbook highlights chapter events, both locally and nationally, service activities that the sorority participated in: Red Cross, March of Dimes, Christmas Seals, etc., and many others: bridal showers and engagement parties, dances, fashion shows, excursions, Mother's Day events, a Gold Rush 49ers-theme pledge party, a Lone Ranger and Tonto "mock initiation," Halloween Party, etc.Los Angeles-Orange County State College was founded in 1949, so presumably this would shed some light on the very early days of the institution. Considering the amount of labor that went into the yearbook, it seems likely that this appealing artifact is unique.

Eleanor Roosevelt Defends Universal Military Training – and 18 year-old Voting Rights

Hyde Park, New York 1951 - Typed Letter Signed, to Flora E. Shirah, February 27, 1951. 2 pp., 7 1/4 x 10 1/4 in. "I suppose you can say that anything which is obligatory is in some degree similar to communism or fascism. The only difference here is that we the people, are consulted and it is our representatives through whom we speak. I think you are a trifle emotional when you call 18 year old men, children. I think they should be allowed to vote. Of course there are inequalities and injustices in any big undertaking.""I am sorry if you feel that you can not trust your government. You can not expect always to have one man who will carry the burdens of the whole democracy and express their thinking for them. Now we have to do it for ourselves.""We are not alone in Korea, many nations are represented . but we have to bear the brunt . because we were spared during the last war from war in our own country and therefore today we are the strongest nation in the world.""A mothers' rebellion would certainly be a novel and interesting undertaking because there would be a division even among the mothers. I do not know, nor could I tell you exactly how you could find out how many men in Congress have eighteen year old sons but I am sure there are a great many who have."A rich and fascinating letter by one of the twentieth century's most powerful first ladies. Complete TranscriptVal-Kill Cottage / Hyde Park, Dutchess County / New York February 27, 1951Dear Mrs. Shirah:The Universal Military Training Bill which is now being considered will mean that eighteen year olds will enter Universal Military Training because most boys will be finishing their high school and there will be less upset if they do their military service then whether they are going to work or whether they are going to college. If they are college material they will probably be sent for college training since great care will be taken not to deplete our essential leadership either for skilled people in medicine, engineering, etc.I do not attribute the motives that you do to our representatives. We have delayed in accepting Universal Military Training until we accepted the fact that we were going to have for a number of years, a situation in which we would have to be constantly prepared unless the USSR was to feel free to attack us. Since that is the case, we must now have Universal Military Training.I suppose you can say that anything which is obligatory is in some degree similar to communism or fascism. The only difference here is that we the people, are consulted and it is our representatives through whom we speak when we accept a measure of this kind because we decide that it is necessary.I think you are a trifle emotional when you call 18 year old men, children. I think they should be allowed to vote. I think you are wrong in saying that in the last war men received one to two years of training. Some men may have stayed in training camps that long for various reasons but not because it was essential to give them that amount of training.Of course there are inequalities and injustices in any big undertaking.I am sorry if you feel that you can not trust your government. I feel that we have some very fine men as our representatives and I feel that they react to what citizens want. You can not expect always to have one man who will carry the burdens of the whole democracy and express their thinking for them. Now we have to do it for ourselves. We are not alone in Korea, many nations are represented on that frontier and their support is valuable but we have to bear the brunt as we will have to bear the brunt in many other undertakings because we were spared during the last war from war in our own country and therefore today we are the strongest nation in the world.A mothers' rebellion would certainly be a novel and interesting undertaking because there would be a division even among the mothers. I do not know, nor could I tell you exactly how you could . (See website for full description)
