        The Fear of God

Garden City: Doubleday, 1951 - Later printing. Very good in a mended dust jacket. The author was an Irish born priest who was a successful promoter of Evangelical Catholicism, holding mass rallies and using mass media as part of his ÒFamily Rosary Crusade.Ó Especially popular in Latin America, he tied himself closely to the C.I.A., an overly cozy relationship that he was eventually forced to abandon. He was criticized for leading a lavish lifestyle, but claimed that this was due to the generosity of his friends in Hollywood, and not at his insistence or request. This copy has been signed on the endpapers by many of those Hollywood actors and personalities, including Art Linkletter, Elinor Donahue, James Gleason, Jane Withers Moss (her married name at the time), Francis X. Bushman, Ward Bond, Rosalind Russell, Van Johnson, Charles Boyer, Ricardo Montalban and his sister-in-law, Loretta Young. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The River [Le fleuve] (Archive of material from the 1951 film, including an original photograph of Renoir on the set with assistant director Satyajit Ray)

Oriental Productions, Ltd. / United Artists, France / India / US 1951 - An archive of material for the 1951 film, including a vintage reference photograph of Renoir directing the film in Bengal, with his smiling 30-year-old assistant Satyajit Ray to his right. Also included in the archive are the original color program for the US release and a program produced specifically for the film's debut in San Francisco at the Stage Door Theatre. It is a point of interest that the film was distributed in the US via the Theatre Guild, resulting in many screenings in playhouses rather than traditional movie theaters.Renoir played a major role in defining what became known in the 1960s as an "auteur," and Ray was in the first generation of directors to inhabit that established definition. He is today considered one of the greatest directors of the twentieth century, and his involvement with Renoir's sole film to be made in India was critical to his career, which would begin properly 4 years later with "Pather Panchali" (1955). We have never before encountered a photograph of the two men together. The international program includes original essays by Renoir, Godden, and producer Kenneth McEldowney. "The River," an international co-production distributed by United Artists, concerns three young girls (two British, one Indian) in Bengal who become infatuated with an ex-soldier who comes into their lives. International program: Full-color, saddle-stitched card wrappers. 16 pages, 12 x 9 inches, saddle-stitched. Near Fine.Stage Door program: Black-and-white, saddle-stitched self-wrappers. 12 pages, 8.5 x 6 inches. Near Fine.Photograph: 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm). Fine.Criterion Collection 276.         WAR SPEECHES OF THE RT. HON. WINSTON S. CHURCHILL. Compiled by Charles Eade

London: Cassell and Co, 1951-1952. 3 volumes. First Edition. Tall 8vo, publisher’s original dark blue-black cloth lettered in gilt on the spines, in the original printed and decorated dustjackets. xvi, 483; xvi, 560; xvi, 578 pp. A very handsome and well preserved set, the cloth bright and clean, the gilt very well preserved, the textblocks fresh and solid. SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF THESE IMPORTANT WAR TIME SPEECHES. Sets of Churchill’s War Speeches have become quite elusive in recent years. We are pleased to be able to offer this complete set. Churchill was, over nearly a century’s activity, known for his almost universal genius. He was perhaps, the greatest orator and statesman of the twentieth century. He was a consummate writer--indeed he was awarded the Noble Prize for literature for his massive study of The Second World War--a master historian, journalist, traveler cum explorer cum military man. He was an accomplished painter and biographer, an extraordinary politician and government leader, but through these speeches, it is quite possible that we will remember him best. For in the speeches of wartime he succeeded in convincing his colleagues to accept the pains of courage and the British ‘race’ of people and the “free world” to make the good fight, to suffer the inestimable cost that would save the world from tyranny and totalitarianism. His vision was unrelenting and without peer and it is captured nowhere more completely than in these speeches of wartime. 4700 sets were published on Sept. 3, 1952. Although the note on p.[vi] states that the publication took place in 1951, printing difficulties caused a delay of twelve months. There are additional speeches in these volumes which did not appear in the wartime volumes and a very useful index and diary of events.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin: The Settlement Cook Book Co.. Good with no Dust Jacket. Hard Cover. Book is 13th Edition, 1951. Boards and pages are clean, unmarked, bright, tightly bound and sharp cornered. Scarce, Out Of Print, Book. "Treasured Recipes of Seven Decades - The Famous All-Purpose Cook Book for Beginner and Expert. With over 3,000 kitchen-tested recipes for everything from appetizers and soups to fruits and other desserts, the book contains a bountiful variety of nutritious, delectable and ever-popular dishes.Wisconsin Historical Society:Born in Milwaukee in 1858, Lizzie Black Kander helped to establish and was president of Milwaukee's first social settlement, known simply as "the Settlement" in 1900. With the financial support of the Federation Jewish Charities of Milwaukee, the Settlement offered training in vocational and domestic skills, as well as classes in English, American history, and music. Kander believed that food was a powerful means of religious and cultural expression, and she used culinary reform to aid in the assimilation of immigrant girls and to introduce immigrant women to American consumer culture. Her involvement in the cooking classes led to the publication of The Settlement's own cookbook in 1901. In these excerpts, Kander defines the "Household Rules," offers recipes for cakes and cookies, and discusses appropriate foods for invalids. Her sub-text throughout these culinary and domestic instructions is about helping recent immigrants adjust to mainstream American culture.

        INSCRIBED PHOTOGRAPH, 9" x 12 ".

      - Circa 1951. A dramatic black and white image of Welles, theatrically posed in front of a movie set for his 1952 movie classic, "Othello," scowling in character as the tragic Moor. The inscription, penned in white ink against the dark background reads: "Dearest Dadda and Hazel: God willing this is the last Christmas in a long time -- we'll spend apart -- all my love always Orson." Maurice "Dadda" Bernstein was among the most important people in the life of Orson Welles, perhaps THE most important. He was the family's physician as well as a friend of the young Orson's parents, Richard and Beatrice. Bernstein carried on a long-term sexual affair with Beatrice and after her death remained on friendly terms with her husband until Richard died. At that time Bernstein became Orson's legal guardian and controlled the boy's inherited fortune. More importantly, he was quick to recognize the potential genius of his ward. It was Dadda who presented the boy with formative gifts that were to prove crucial to his career: a miniature theater and a magic set. Though their relationship was at time checkered (Welles would come to question Dadda's not-so-occasional appropriation of the funds he inherited upon attaining legal age) it is obvious that the two loved each other deeply -- as this photograph so graphically indicates. As fine an Orson Welles artifact as one may hope to find. Matted and framed under museum glass [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The Lost Childhood and other Essays.

London: Eyre and Spottiswoode, 1951. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author to fellow writer Norman Douglas, "Dear Norman This with my love. Thank you so much for the nostalgic picture postcard. Catherine and I both miss you a great deal" With Norman Douglas's ownership stamp on the front pastedown. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a few small closed tears. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A fine association linking these two great novelists and travel writers of the twentieth century. Norman Douglas is best known for his novel South Wind. However his travel books also combine erudition, insight, and some fine prose, which Greene drew upon for both his novels and travel books. These works include Siren Land (1911), Fountains in the Sand, described as 'rambles amongst the oases of Tunisia' (1912), Old Calabria (1915), Together (Austria) (1923) and Alone (Italy) (1921). In Michael Shelden's biography of Greene The Man Within he paints a vivid account of Greene's stay at Villa Rosaio in Anacapri, high above the Bay of Naples. It is, as Shelden points out, a difficult place to find and clearly an ideal retreat for a well known author like Greene. It was here that Greene struck up a close friendship with the author Norman Douglas, During the 1940s and 50s Greene and Douglas would often meet up and share dinners together and the two become close friends.

        End of the Affair, The

London: William Heinemann, 1951. First Impression. Hardcover. Fine-/Fine-. First Issue, without the divisional numeral (and thus chapter division) of Book 2, VIII. 8vo: [6],237,[1]pp. Publisher's grey cloth, spine lettered in gilt, biege end papers, grey and white price-clipped typographic dust jacket. About Fine (mild lightening to spine); about Fine jacket (several miniscule closed tears). A most attractive copy. Wobbe A27a In the introduction to this novel in Introductions to Three Novels, Greene reminds the reader that The End of the Affair was one of his first attempts to use the first person. He also reports that Great Expectations and The Good Soldier were deeply influential in the novel's development. "From a technical standpoint, [The End of the Affair] is a masterful blend of diary entries, letters, and shifting viewpoints, yet from a religious standpoint, it is the most spiritually challenging record of obsessive jealousy and hate that Greene ever produced . . . The fourth of Greene?s explicitly Catholic novels, [it] in fact concerns a love triangle. It is also a kind of detective story, in which the mysterious third party, of whom Bendrix is so jealous, proves to be spiritual. Greene dedicated the novel to 'C.' [Lady Catherine Walston], with whom he was then having an affair."
