Alpha Iota Chapter of Theta Sigma Phi. Yearbook 1950-1951. [Cover title]: AI: Nineteen Fifty - Nineteen Fifty-one

(Long Beach, California): Alpha Iota Chapter of Theta Sigma Phi. 1951. Oblong folio. Measuring 19.5" x 8.25". Plastic spiral bound handpainted and hand-lettered card covers with plastic overlay. Light edgewear, a few of the affixed elements (probably photographs) are lacking, a couple of others have become loose or detached, but otherwise nice and near fine. A completely handmade, well-designed, and very attractive yearbook made for a sorority chapter, in Long Beach, California, probably at Los Angeles-Orange County State College (now California State University, Long Beach). A long introductory poem about the Chapter's activities is signed "R.P.L." which seems to indicate the member Rosemary Leal who is listed elsewhere in the book. Each page has been carefully and artfully handlettered, usually with affixed photographs, invitations to events, clippings, or letters indicating the various activities of the sorority. The yearbook highlights chapter events, both locally and nationally, service activities that the sorority participated in: Red Cross, March of Dimes, Christmas Seals, etc., and many others: bridal showers and engagement parties, dances, fashion shows, excursions, Mother's Day events, a Gold Rush 49ers-theme pledge party, a Lone Ranger and Tonto "mock initiation," Halloween Party, etc.Los Angeles-Orange County State College was founded in 1949, so presumably this would shed some light on the very early days of the institution. Considering the amount of labor that went into the yearbook, it seems likely that this appealing artifact is unique . .

Collection of 21 Erotic Stories from the Fifties

Tijuana, Mexico: The 7 Zephyrs Press and Esoterica Press. 1951-1953. Two gray file folders containing 21 stapled quarto pamphlets; one with punch holes is string-tied and the other is stab bound with wire. Each story is individually stapled in wrappers with two-color covers and mimeograph sheets, printed rectos only. About half are paginated and most have "Copy" printed on their covers and with a number in red. Wear to the edges and oxidation to the staples, overall very good.A collection of erotic stories published by The 7 Zephyrs Press and Esoterica Press in the early 1950s. The stories, which typically tell of virginal young men and woman experiencing sex for the first time (as well as in all of its many varieties), hold a particular forbidden charm despite their crude production and hastily composed content. They also remind us of the repressive nature of postwar America when graphic descriptions of sex and alternative sexual desires were not only considered immoral, but many cases, illegal as well. One of the files folder has a magazine clipping taped to its inside front cover titled, "Unique Store: Lewd Books Openly Sold in Tijuana!" This one-page article from Bare magazine describes the Old Paris Book Shop on Main Street in Tijuana which sells "dirty books" to tourist.         Dianetics: The Original Thesis

Wichita, Kansas: The Wichita Publishing Co., distributed by The Hubbard Dianetic Foundation. Inc.,, [1951]. Octavo. Original plain green cloth. With the dust jacket. Ends and corners very slightly rubbed, an excellent copy with the jacket bearing only a few small nicks, tears and marks. First edition, first impression. The Original Thesis was originally written in 1948 and distributed among close friends - it quickly gained attention and in 1951 received its first official publication in this scarce hardcover edition. This copy bears the corrective ink stamp to the jacket front panel and the title page, changing the address from The Hubbard Dianetic Foundation, Wichita, to a new personal address, "L. Ron Hubbard, 1405 north central, phoenix, arizona" - an evocative indicator of the now-international Scientology movement being run out of town in its nascent stages.

Plastic spiral bound handpainted and hand-lettered card covers with plastic overlay. Light edgewear, a few of the affixed elements (probably photographs) are lacking, a couple of others have become loose or detached, but otherwise nice and near fine. 10 (4 eigenh. und 6 ms.) Briefe mit U. sowie eine Portraitphotographie mit eh. Widmung und U. Paris, Santa Monica, und New York, 1951 bis 1974.

1951. Zusammen 12¼ SS. auf 14 Bll. Verschiedene Formate. Die Photographie i. F. 201:125 mm. This is not what I consider a final draft of Gigi, by any means, for there is plenty of work to be done on it. But I do feel it is at a stage where I should proceed according to the ideas of the director. My own concept of the play is that the whole thing should be in the mood of a rather naughty Valentine and that it must definitely have a girl in the title role who can emerge as a star. (Mind you, I do think that the part will give any actress plenty of scope and opportunity.) Another idea I have is this - - If it were a possibility that Bethel Leslie could play Gigi, it might also be a possibility that Helen Hayes would play Aunt Alicia. I know that Helen has been considering to do a play with Bethel, should the right one come along. So this might be it [...]" (a. d. Br. v. 3. IV. 1951). (2½ SS. auf 3 Bll.): "Love to my twin brother from | Anita". - Aus der Sammlung Charles Williamson und Tucker Fleming.
