Milwaukee, Wisconsin: The Settlement Cook Book Co.. Good with no Dust Jacket. Hard Cover. Book is 13th Edition, 1951. Boards and pages are clean, unmarked, bright, tightly bound and sharp cornered. Scarce, Out Of Print, Book. "Treasured Recipes of Seven Decades - The Famous All-Purpose Cook Book for Beginner and Expert. With over 3,000 kitchen-tested recipes for everything from appetizers and soups to fruits and other desserts, the book contains a bountiful variety of nutritious, delectable and ever-popular dishes.Wisconsin Historical Society:Born in Milwaukee in 1858, Lizzie Black Kander helped to establish and was president of Milwaukee's first social settlement, known simply as "the Settlement" in 1900. With the financial support of the Federation Jewish Charities of Milwaukee, the Settlement offered training in vocational and domestic skills, as well as classes in English, American history, and music. Kander believed that food was a powerful means of religious and cultural expression, and she used culinary reform to aid in the assimilation of immigrant girls and to introduce immigrant women to American consumer culture. Her involvement in the cooking classes led to the publication of The Settlement's own cookbook in 1901. In these excerpts, Kander defines the "Household Rules," offers recipes for cakes and cookies, and discusses appropriate foods for invalids. Her sub-text throughout these culinary and domestic instructions is about helping recent immigrants adjust to mainstream American culture.

        INSCRIBED PHOTOGRAPH, 9" x 12 ".

      - Circa 1951. A dramatic black and white image of Welles, theatrically posed in front of a movie set for his 1952 movie classic, "Othello," scowling in character as the tragic Moor. The inscription, penned in white ink against the dark background reads: "Dearest Dadda and Hazel: God willing this is the last Christmas in a long time -- we'll spend apart -- all my love always Orson." Maurice "Dadda" Bernstein was among the most important people in the life of Orson Welles, perhaps THE most important. He was the family's physician as well as a friend of the young Orson's parents, Richard and Beatrice. Bernstein carried on a long-term sexual affair with Beatrice and after her death remained on friendly terms with her husband until Richard died. At that time Bernstein became Orson's legal guardian and controlled the boy's inherited fortune. More importantly, he was quick to recognize the potential genius of his ward. It was Dadda who presented the boy with formative gifts that were to prove crucial to his career: a miniature theater and a magic set. Though their relationship was at time checkered (Welles would come to question Dadda's not-so-occasional appropriation of the funds he inherited upon attaining legal age) it is obvious that the two loved each other deeply -- as this photograph so graphically indicates. As fine an Orson Welles artifact as one may hope to find. Matted and framed under museum glass [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The Lost Childhood and other Essays.

London: Eyre and Spottiswoode, 1951. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author to fellow writer Norman Douglas, "Dear Norman This with my love. Thank you so much for the nostalgic picture postcard. Catherine and I both miss you a great deal" With Norman Douglas's ownership stamp on the front pastedown. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a few small closed tears. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A fine association linking these two great novelists and travel writers of the twentieth century. Norman Douglas is best known for his novel South Wind. However his travel books also combine erudition, insight, and some fine prose, which Greene drew upon for both his novels and travel books. These works include Siren Land (1911), Fountains in the Sand, described as 'rambles amongst the oases of Tunisia' (1912), Old Calabria (1915), Together (Austria) (1923) and Alone (Italy) (1921). In Michael Shelden's biography of Greene The Man Within he paints a vivid account of Greene's stay at Villa Rosaio in Anacapri, high above the Bay of Naples. It is, as Shelden points out, a difficult place to find and clearly an ideal retreat for a well known author like Greene. It was here that Greene struck up a close friendship with the author Norman Douglas, During the 1940s and 50s Greene and Douglas would often meet up and share dinners together and the two become close friends.

        End of the Affair, The

London: William Heinemann, 1951. First Impression. Hardcover. Fine-/Fine-. First Issue, without the divisional numeral (and thus chapter division) of Book 2, VIII. 8vo: [6],237,[1]pp. Publisher's grey cloth, spine lettered in gilt, biege end papers, grey and white price-clipped typographic dust jacket. About Fine (mild lightening to spine); about Fine jacket (several miniscule closed tears). A most attractive copy. Wobbe A27a In the introduction to this novel in Introductions to Three Novels, Greene reminds the reader that The End of the Affair was one of his first attempts to use the first person. He also reports that Great Expectations and The Good Soldier were deeply influential in the novel's development. "From a technical standpoint, [The End of the Affair] is a masterful blend of diary entries, letters, and shifting viewpoints, yet from a religious standpoint, it is the most spiritually challenging record of obsessive jealousy and hate that Greene ever produced . . . The fourth of Greene?s explicitly Catholic novels, [it] in fact concerns a love triangle. It is also a kind of detective story, in which the mysterious third party, of whom Bendrix is so jealous, proves to be spiritual. Greene dedicated the novel to 'C.' [Lady Catherine Walston], with whom he was then having an affair."         MES MODÈLES A TRAVERS LE MONDE : Paris, Les Amériques, L'Orient, Tahiti.

Quelques rousseurs. ÉDITION ORIGINALE. TIRAGE A 350 EXEMPLAIRES. Life, New York Tribune, Match, France-Soir, etc. Une relative aisance matérielle lui permet alors de s'échapper de Montmartre et de rechercher ses modèles en Orient, à Tahiti et dans les Amériques.         Lie Down in Darkness [Inscribed Association Copy w/ TNS]

Bobbs-Merrill, Indianapolis 1951 - Styron's first book, inscribed to the writer Jonathan Carroll: "with best wishes/ William Styron/ 27 September 1971/ (Twenty years, to the month, after publication)." The date is also nine years before Carroll's first published book, The Land of Laughs. Laid in is a typed note signed by Styron in which he agrees to the signing; based on the address, Carroll would have been an English teacher at the time, in North Carolina. The book is unevenly sunned on the cloth and bears a few small stains; very good in a jacket with modest edge wear including one edge tear, and a vertical crease to the spine; still very good. The note is folded, else fine, with a chipped mailing envelope included. A nice association copy of an important first novel. Forty years after this inscription, on the occasion of Styron's death in 2011, Carroll wrote a blog post on his website, referring to Styron as a "great American novelist."
