Atlanta, GA, 4 February 1949. Letter. Normal mailing creases. About Fine with original typed envelope. Fine single-spaced two-page TYPED LETTER SIGNED (TLS) of @700 words written just six months before Mitchell's untimely death at the age of 48 after being struck by a speeding automobile while crossing Peachtree Street. Written on her personal stationery and SIGNED "Margaret Mitchell Marsh" to Dr. C. E. Mayos. Personal content, in part: "We were sorry, too, that you were routed through our poorer section and missed seeing the residences which are Atlanta's chief charm." Mitchell discusses her husband's health and inquires as to why Dr. Mayos has retired and is in Florida, prefacing her inquiry by remarking, "It is not our habit to speak out about the personal affairs of other people." Mitchell compares Georgia to Florida and tries to convince the doctor to move to Georgia: "Our state is the largest east of the Mississippi, a sparsely settled one for such large territory, and we are very short of doctors.

        The Sheltering Sky

London: Lehmann. (1949). The first edition of Bowles's landmark first novel, about Western youths encountering the unfamiliar, and themselves, in North Africa. One of the seminal novels of the Beat generation and an influential book in the decades since. One critic commented that Bowles was "a master of cruelty and isolation and the ironies of the search for meaning in an inadequately understood environment." Bowles exposed his characters, and by extension his readers, to the alien cultures of the desert and also to the psychotropic drugs prevalent in that part of the world. Printed in an edition of only 4000 copies. This copy has a slight spine slant and foxing to the page edges; near fine in a very good, spine-tanned dust jacket with a tear to the lower front spine fold and a few small edge chips. A cheaply produced postwar book, this is a better than usual copy. . First Edition. Hardcover.

Autograph Letter, signed ("Bill"), to Mrs. Marrion Anderson & her son Arthur ("Bratto")

Saugus, Calif ("Barracks 19"), ca. 22 august 1949. 5 x 8 inches. 1-1/2 pp. in pencil on single sheet of ruled paper. With accompanying envelope addressed in Tilden's hand, postmarked Aug, 22, 1949 . A touching letter from the 56-year-old Tilden, the greatest tennis player of the first half of the twentieth century, then recently incarcerated for a second offense on charges of stemming from his homosexual encounters with young boys. Tilden writes from prison to his closest friends Marrion and her son Arthur Anderson, a young tennis player whom Tilden had adopted as his protEgE and pupil. According to Frank Deford, in BIG BILL TILDEN, Tilden actually lived with the Andersons twice for an extended period, and "The Andersons truly loved him. Many times he said to Marrion, 'You know, Arthur's the only real son I ever had.' And to Arthur, 'You and your mother are the only close family I ever had.'" The Andersons never deserted Tilden, even in this, his darkest hour. Tilden writes: "Dear Marrion and Bratto, Just to tell you how much I enjoyed the visit today - Next Friday is Bratto's birthday & since I have no hope of being with you then, please Marrion, even if the car is his present, give him $10 out of my money, with my love, and see he gets something he wants -" Tilden then turns to Arthur with tennis advice: "Now Bratto, Pal, remember all we talked about today, to play cool, intelligent mixed tennis, not to rush and to return service. This is only to let you know I am thinking of you and love you both very much & I'll be seeing you Sunday if not before. Always & ever, Your Bill." According to Deford, Tilden was released on December 18, 1949, just a few days before the Associated Press poll of the half-century voted Bill Tilden "the greatest athlete in his sport by a margin larger than any other - Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, Bobby Jones, Red Grange. Of them all, Tilden was voted the most dominant -"

Rotational States of Atomic Nuclei.Copenhagen: Ejnar Munksgaards Forlag, 1954. First edition.

Author's presentation copy of Aage Bohr's doctoral dissertation. "This paper, which gives a survey of the theory of nuclear rotational states and of the experimental evidence concerning this type of nuclear excitation, is based upon studies begun during the author's stay at Columbia University in 1949-59, and since then continued at the Institute for Theoretical Physics of the University of Copenhagen."<br/><br/> Aage Bohr (1922-2009), the son of Niels Bohr, began studying physics at the University of Copenhagen in 1940. In October 1943, he fled, with the rest of the Bohr family, to Sweden to escape the Nazi occupation. Some time later, he followed his father to England, and served during this time as his father's secretary and assistant. In August 1945 he was able to return to Denmark, and resume his studies. He received his Ph.D. in 1954 and in 1956 became professor at the University of Copenhagen. From 1963-1970 he was director of the Niels Bohr Institute, and from 1975 he was director of NORDITA. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1975 "for the discovery of the connection between collective motion and particle motion in atomic nuclei and the development of the theory of the structure of the atomic nucleus based on this connection." The other prize winners in that year were Ben Mottelson and James Rainwater, both of whom Aage Bohr thanked in this thesis.. 8vo (234 x 147 mm), original printed wrappers (with some very light sporring), pp. [1-7] 8-54, inscribed in pen by Aage Bohr to upper right corner of front wrapper 'Til Tante Rigmor [Adler] med autors underdanigste hilsen'

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1949. First Edition. Octavo. Canary-yellow boards backed in navy blue cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; dustjacket; 136pp. Inscribed by Langston Hughes on front endpaper: "Especially for Moe Asch - and our record - Sincerely, Langston," dated New York, August 1955. A tight, Near Fine copy in lightly worn dustwrapper with small loss near crown (not affecting text); VG to Near Fine. & & The inscription likely refers to Hughes&#39;s 1955 recording for Moe Asch&#39;s recording company, Folkways, titled The Glory of Negro History - one of several spoken-word collaborations between Hughes and Asch in the decade of the Fifties. Asch was a pioneer not only of recorded folk music - pressing the first commercial sides of artists as diverse as Pete Seeger and Leadbelly - but also a staunch supporter of the civil rights movement, as evidenced by his numerous collaborations with African-American poets and musicians throughout the post-war years. A terrific association.

The Fireside Cook Book: A Complete Guide to Fine Cooking

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1949. First edition of this early Beard classic. Original cloth. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Signed by James Beard on the half-title page. A very bright copy. The Fireside Cook Book is designed for people who are not content to regard food just as something one transfers periodically from plate to mouth. It is for those who recognize that a simple family meal (as well as a dress-up dinner party) can be a pleasure and a special event. The wide variety of I-can&#39;t-wait-to-try-it dishes in the book are presented according to a new and different theory. You will find here no attempt to overwhelm the cook with all the recipes ever concocted. Instead, you will find clear, easy-to-follow instructions for the basic preparation of every food, followed in each case by fascinating variations. The basic recipes and variations add up to 1,217 tested dishes -- simple enough for the novice, delicious enough for the most meticulous master chef, complete enough for the most imaginative menus without a repetition.

Archive of Drafts of Letters and Documents relating to Saroyan&#39;s separation and divorce from his wife Carol Marcus, and her affair with cartoonist Al Capp

[New York], 1949-1950. 4to. In all, 29 pp. . A Saroyan archive of essential biographical importance. In 1943, Armenian-American author William Saroyan, at the peak of his success and fame, married the 17-year-old socialite Carol Marcus. They had two children, Aram (b. 1943) and Lucy (b. 1946), but by 1949, as this archive painfully documents, the marriage was clearly breaking up. In July 1949, the couple agreed to separate; in September of that year they divorced; and Marcus, as a letter here reveals, began an affair will the cartoonist Al Capp. Eventually, Saroyan and Marcus remarried in 1951, but they quickly divorced again in 1952. This archive contains the following letters and documents relating to the marriage and its break-up: 1. Several typed and carbon drafts of Saroyan&#39;s request for annulment of the marriage, with several autograph corrections and insertions by Saroyan. The essential ground of the complaint was Saroyan&#39;s assertion that Marcus deceived him as to her origins, and pretended to be the daughter of a Catholic couple from Long Island, of Scottish, and French-Russian descent, rather than the illegitimate daughter of a Jewish mother, as she later admitted. 14 pages in all 2. Carbon copy of the separation agreement of July 1949. 6 pages. 3. Draft Typed Letter signed to Al Capp, Jan. 8, 1950. 3pp., with several autograph corrections. 4. Draft of the same letter. 1 page 5. Another draft of the same letter. 1 page. 6. Carbon copy of the final letter to Capp, Jan 8, 1950. 4 pages. A painful and moving letter to Capp regarding Capp&#39;s affair with Marcus, a warning to Capp that Marcus had a psychopathic personality ("she tells lies and believes them, makes false accusations, and lives in a world of fantasy"); and his belief that Capp is "wittingly or unwittingly helping this woman to plunge deeper and deeper into a life of fantasy which must eventually bring her to the urgent need of hospitalization, and to her children terrible suffering and heartache -" Carol Marcus later married the actor Walter Matthau; Aram Saroyan became a writer in his own right; and Lucy Saroyan became an actress

        Chinese Carriage hand-colored woodblock print

Chinese Carriage hand-colored woodblock printChina, 19th Century18" x 23 ¼" framed; museum quality framing using all archival materials and uv plexiglassExcellent conditionThis Chinese woodblock print is from a series of extraordinary woodblock prints, from the 19th century, illustrate various types of Chinese carriages, including Chinese litter, or jiao, which had no wheels. The first depictions of Chinese wooden carriages on poles appeared in painted landscape scrolls in the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534) and the Song Dynasty. The type of carriage one used was a way for the Chinese to denote class and/or status. A commoner used a simple carriage made of bamboo or wood, while the mandarin (the wealthiest class) class used a carriage enclosed in silk curtains. Also of great importance was the bridal chair. A traditional bride is carried to her wedding ceremony by a ?shoulder carriage.? These were lacquered in an auspicious shade of red, richly ornamented and gilded, and were equipped with red silk curtains to screen the bride from onlookers. During the late 19th century, manual rickshaws became popular with the social elite in China. Rickshaws are a mode of human-powered transport in which a runner draws a two-wheeled cart which seats one or two people. In the 20th Century, the rickshaw was considered a symbol of oppression to the working class and poor and were eventually eliminated after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949.This fascinating print is in excellent condition, with original hand-coloring, still incredibly vibrant.

Medicine Under Canvas: A War Journal of the 77th Evacuation Hospital

Kansas City, Missouri: The Sosland Press Inc. [& the University of Kansas, School of Medicine, 1949]. First Edition: apparently only 500 copies were printed for unit members. This is an extremely detailed history of an evacuation hospital in the European and North African theatres of World War II, one of only a few such histories published. The 77th Evacuation Hospital was formed at The University of Kansas Medical Center in 1942. Although preliminary organization began earlier, the unit was not actually drawn up until the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December of 1941. The unit, comprised of 40 doctors, 60 nurses, and 300 enlisted men, was shipped out to England in May of 1942. They were active in Oran after North Africa was invaded by the Allies and in Sicily until the surrender of all axis forces in that theatre in 1943. They then returned to England and prepared for service on the European mainland after the anticipated invasion. On July 7th, 1944 the unit crossed the English Channel and supported Allied troops until the end of the war.A second edition appeared in 2008, as well as a documentary film containing interviews with unit members and original colour footage shot by Mervin Rumold, MD, a surgeon in the unit. The documentary premiered on Veteran&rsquo;s Day, 2008. 4to. pp. [10], 196. text in double columns. profusely illus. in b/w, some map illus. map-illustrated endleaves tracing the movement of the 77th Evacuation Hospital from May 1942 &ndash; June 1945. cloth (some light wear, light damp staining to lower outer margins of last few leaves)

El Alamein to the River Sangro

New York: E. P. Dutton & Company, Inc.,, 1949. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine gilt, crest to upper board in blind. Dampstain to upper board partially affecting front endpapers, some spotting to endpapers, edges of text block, and occasionally to contents. First US edition, first printing. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To: Dick Casey who was a good friend to the Eighth Army, and a tower of strength when needed. From: Montgomery of Alamein F. M.". Montgomery was notoriously formal and grudging when it came to his inscriptions, even to close friends and family members, and those of warmth and generosity such as the present example are indeed rare. In this case Montgomery had good reason to be effusive. Richard Casey was a prominent Australian politician who was appointed Minister to the United States in 1940 and worked diligently to bring the US into the Second World War on the side of the British. He so impressed Winston Churchill that the Prime Minister appointed him British minister resident in the Middle East with a seat in the war cabinet. There he played a key role in negotiating between British and Allied governments, local leaders, and field commanders and "among his most ticklish jobs was negotiating the replacing of Sir Claude Auchinleck as commander by Alexander and Montgomery in August 1942" (ODNB). Montgomery had been recommended by General Brooke, but was disliked by Churchill, who "discouraged egos as big as his own" (ODNB). Montgomery&#39;s success is now well known, and so impressed was the Prime Minister by Casey&#39;s "trouble-shooting that, in early 1944, Churchill made him governor of Bengal to secure the base for the drive by Mountbatten against the Japanese in Burma. Here too his new broom was effective. He reorganized the embattled administration, inoculated virtually the whole population (54 of 65 million) against smallpox, and set about a gigantic food procurement programme to offset the likelihood of another famine" before returning to his political career in Australia (ODNB). A fantastic association.
