Les vingt-cinq capitales de la Suisse *

Ides & Calendes, Neuchâtel & Paris été 1949. - En feuilles sous cartable demi-toile à rabats 30 x 25, dos muet, titre gravé contrecollé. A peine défraîchi.

CASE OF THE NEGLIGENT NYMPH (Intimately Inscribed)

New York: William Morrow, 1949. Gardner, Erle Stanley. THE CASE OF THE NEGLIGENT NYMPH. New York: William Morrow, (1949). First Edition. A FINE bright copy in a NEAR FINE priced dust jacket (trifling edge wear, a few stray scratches to the front panel, a tiny stain on the rear panel). Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Tee Rose, who can find words on a paper that really arouse emotions. My love and best for a rosy 1950. Yours, Erle" Underneath this, he has signed his full name "Erle Stanley Gardner/ Dec 1949." Not much is known of the recipient, as yet, other than she did write a story for Argosy Magazine in the late 1940s that appeared in the same issue as one of Gardner's. Erle Stanley Gardner occasionally signed copies of his books for friends and people he worked with but rarely did he inscribe a book so intimately. See our other copies from the same primary source by using key words Tee Rose.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Fine/Near Fine.

        Tibetan Painted Scrolls

Rome:: La Libreria Dello Stato ,, 1949. ORIGINAL ITALIAN EDITION (assumed proof). Hardcover. Very Good. An ORIGINAL ITALIAN EDITON from 1949, (and assumed proof from the library of Professor. F.D. Lessing late of UC. Berkeley) of the important early set of three volumes by the Tibetologist Giuseppe Tucci. Volume 1, 328 pages with 89 figure illustrations; Volume 2, 329-727 pages, with figures 90-122 and 16 numbered tables. volume 3: Portfolio of plates, 25 polychrome color, numbered alphabetically, omitting "W" (as is standard in all sets) and 231 sepia monochrome, varying in size on 12.5 by 17 inch leaves. Giuseppe Tucci was Italy's foremost scholar of the East, living in India where he studied Buddhism and Tibet, and organizing several pioneering archaeological digs in the Swat Valley, Ghazni in Afghanistan, the Himalayas and Iran. The first volume of the set covers Tibetan history with an emphasis on gTsang and dBus and the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries. Volume two discusses the 195 tankas reproduced in the 231 plates of the portfolio volume. The third volume is a fold-out cloth portfolio containing the plates themselves. From Professor Lessing's review: "In summary, this work far surpasses anything written before in the wealth of material and in the beauty of reproductions. Furthermore, the author outdistances by far all his predecessors, both as a field worker and as a desk worker ... No future work on Tibetan iconography can be done which would ignore Tucci's research now accessible in convenient form. In brief, this is and will stand as a milestone in the field." Journal of the American Oriental Society, Vol. 74, No. 1 (Jan-Mar., 1954), pp. 40-51. This was issued in an numbered edition of 750. This set, coming from the library of Professor Ferdinand D. Lessing, Professor of Oriental Languages at U.C. Berkeley, was presumably the set used of his lengthy review of 1954, and not being a numbered edition is presumed to be a proof set. Comparison of this set with a numbered edition at the University of Virginia Library Tibetan Collection reveals a greater depth of color in the plates of this edition, and thus would appear to confirm its status as a proof. The 2 book volumes are 17 by 12 inches, and the third portfolio is 20 by 14 inches. The volumes are of red cloth with titles, the contents of all volumes are excellent, the covers of each have some fading and wear at the edges, though this would appear quite normal considering the age and use etc. Volume 1 binding has some cracks at the hinges. The copies at The University of Virginia were similarly worn to the outside.

Berlin: Gebrüder Weiss,, 1949. Octavo. Original cream cloth, titles to spine and upper board in red. With the dust jacket. Boards a little rubbed and toned with some slight spots to the lower cover, contents tanned. A very good copy in the rubbed and nicked jacket. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by Brecht's wife Helene Weigel on the front free endpaper, "Dear Mr. Clark, many thanks, Helene Weigel". Tipped-in to the front pastedown is a postcard also inscribed by Weigel to Clark, "Dear Mr. Clark, please accept these as a small token of thanks and friendship for your help during our stay in London. With greetings! Yours Helene Weigel and 'The Berliner Ensemble'". The Berliner Ensemble is a theatre company established by Brecht and Weigel in Germany in 1949 and still operating today. The troupe visited London during the late summer of 1956, only a few weeks after Brecht's death, where they performed Mother Courage, The Caucasian Chalk Circle and Trumpets and Drums at the Palace Theatre. Critic Michael Billington later recalled it as one of the pivotal moments in post-war British theatre. Though Clark's identity is unknown, he was obviously instrumental in assisting Weigel and her colleagues during this important visit. A very nice presentation.

The Intelligent Investor: A Book of Practical Counsel

HARPER & BROTHERS, NEW YORK 1949 - extremely scarce first edition 1949. THIS COPY IS A LATER PRINTING PRINTED IN 1949 WITH from a classic author on the Stock Market. Minimal wear to boards, gilt title on spine, lightly age-toned pages. However, dust jacket sun faded, some loss of head of spine and brittleness, fore edge of jacket ford chipped, creased edges, some closed tears. The inner flap of dust jacket has a $3.50 price; number on bottom of front inner flap No. 7553, and the number on the rear of jacket bottom corner is No. 3086. They did however print a 'letter-letter' printing code on the copyright page-a standard procedure for Harper at that time, and known to Bookseller's as the "Harper Printing Code'. The first letter was the month of the year ('A' being January, 'B' February etc) and the second was the Year. Google Harper Printing Code and you will find a table showing the letters Harper used until they abandoned the system. In this case 'D-Y' means April, 1949. The Book was copyrighted in May, 1949, and obviously the original print run done up in the month before. If you look for other copies available on the web, you will see a number of them that claim the letter code of the First Printing should be 'A-Z'. That is false, as a perusal of the Harper Printing Code table you just Googled will show you that A-Z is the printing code for a January, 1950 Printing. Also note that some later printings now available for sale (including A-Z copies and F-Y copies among others), will use the word First Edition in the description of the Book offered, sometimes without indicating that the copy is, in fact, a later printing. That is because the SECOND EDITION did not come out until 1959, so that technically speaking, all PRINTINGS before then are FIRST EDITIONS, even though they might also be LATER PRINTINGS. All PRINTINGS of the Original Edition are collectible, but the most desirable is the First Printing (which this is). There is some confusion about this sometimes, as we Booksellers typically use First Edition and First Printing pretty much interchangeably much of the time.
