        Nineteen Eighty-Four

London: Secker & Warburg,, 1949. Octavo. Original light green cloth, titles to spine in red, red top-stain. With the red dust jacket. Housed in a white and light brown cloth slipcase. Cloth very lightly rubbed at ends of spine, small spot to tail of spine, contents faintly toned. An excellent copy in the fresh jacket that is very lightly rubbed at the extremities with slightly toned spine panel. First US edition, first impression, originally published in the UK in the same year. Copies of the UK and US first editions of Nineteen Eighty-Four were issued either in green or dark red dust jackets. To judge from surviving examples, this was done in proportions of about two green to one red. The red jackets are far more susceptible to fading, and as a consequence, surviving copies in nice condition are uncommon.

A FINE bright copy in a NEAR FINE priced dust jacket (trifling edge wear, a few stray scratches to the front panel, a tiny stain on the rear panel). Not much is known of the recipient, as yet, other than she did write a story for Argosy Magazine in the late 1940s that appeared in the same issue as one of Gardner's. Erle Stanley Gardner occasionally signed copies of his books for friends and people he worked with but rarely did he inscribe a book so intimately. See our other copies from the same primary source by using key words Tee Rose.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Fine/Near Fine.

        Tibetan Painted Scrolls

Rome:: La Libreria Dello Stato ,, 1949. ORIGINAL ITALIAN EDITION (assumed proof). Hardcover. Very Good. An ORIGINAL ITALIAN EDITON from 1949, (and assumed proof from the library of Professor. F.D. Lessing late of UC. Berkeley) of the important early set of three volumes by the Tibetologist Giuseppe Tucci. Volume 1, 328 pages with 89 figure illustrations; Volume 2, 329-727 pages, with figures 90-122 and 16 numbered tables. volume 3: Portfolio of plates, 25 polychrome color, numbered alphabetically, omitting "W" (as is standard in all sets) and 231 sepia monochrome, varying in size on 12.5 by 17 inch leaves. Giuseppe Tucci was Italy's foremost scholar of the East, living in India where he studied Buddhism and Tibet, and organizing several pioneering archaeological digs in the Swat Valley, Ghazni in Afghanistan, the Himalayas and Iran. The first volume of the set covers Tibetan history with an emphasis on gTsang and dBus and the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries. Volume two discusses the 195 tankas reproduced in the 231 plates of the portfolio volume. The third volume is a fold-out cloth portfolio containing the plates themselves. From Professor Lessing's review: "In summary, this work far surpasses anything written before in the wealth of material and in the beauty of reproductions. Furthermore, the author outdistances by far all his predecessors, both as a field worker and as a desk worker ... No future work on Tibetan iconography can be done which would ignore Tucci's research now accessible in convenient form. In brief, this is and will stand as a milestone in the field." Journal of the American Oriental Society, Vol. 74, No. 1 (Jan-Mar., 1954), pp. 40-51. This was issued in an numbered edition of 750. This set, coming from the library of Professor Ferdinand D. Lessing, Professor of Oriental Languages at U.C. Berkeley, was presumably the set used of his lengthy review of 1954, and not being a numbered edition is presumed to be a proof set. Comparison of this set with a numbered edition at the University of Virginia Library Tibetan Collection reveals a greater depth of color in the plates of this edition, and thus would appear to confirm its status as a proof. The 2 book volumes are 17 by 12 inches, and the third portfolio is 20 by 14 inches. The volumes are of red cloth with titles, the contents of all volumes are excellent, the covers of each have some fading and wear at the edges, though this would appear quite normal considering the age and use etc. Volume 1 binding has some cracks at the hinges. The copies at The University of Virginia were similarly worn to the outside.
