ORIGINAL JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT COVERDONE BY VAN GULIK FOR HIS 1949 TRANSLATION OF DEE GOONG AN.

1949. 1949 - One of a limited number of the original Japanese woodblock prints done by Van Gulik for his 1949 translation of Dee Goong An, The Ancient Chinese Detective Story, that are criminal cases solved by Judge Dee. The book DEE GOONG AN was published in 1949 and limited to 1200 copies. This print was used as the dust jacket for the book, but after his death in 1967, a small number (probably 20 copies), were found among his holdings and were sold by his wife. On the printing of Dee Goong An, Dr. van Gulik noted: The cover of this book represents the scene described on page 197. ["Judge Dee had the senior scribe read aloud his notes of the confession, and Hsu Deh-tai affixed his seal thereto. The judge slowly reread the document. Then he ordered the constables to bring in Mrs. Djou . They took off her robes, leaving her only one undergarment, and then stretched her out on the floor. Having brought in the large screws, they made her lie on the heavy boards with her back, and placed her arms and legs in the screws. Her body writhed in vain in the terrible grip, and she shrieked hoarsely, but she gave no sign of wanting to confess."]. The print measures 13" x 18" and is protected with a mat and tasteful wooden frame. The condition of the print is fine and it provides a scene that is present in one of the three stories Judge Dee had to solve. An elusive item and an exceptional copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

ORIGINAL COLOR POCHOIR [RED SHOES, GREEN HAT].

N.p.: Artist, [ca. 1940-1949]. - Folio. 17 x 13" (432 x 337 mm.), plus margins. Pochoir stencil on wove paper. Signed in the plate. Archivally mounted. Mat a bit scuffed, print has a few nicks and smudges at the extreme edges of the substantial margins, else about fine. A colorful and whimsical image, sometimes appearing under the alternate title, "Artist in Her Studio." Hilla Rebay von Ehrenwiesen (1890-1967) was the artist largely credited with exposing Solomon R. Guggenheim to avant- garde art, who appointed her as the first director of the Museum of Non-Objective Art (MNOA), later the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. After meeting artists Jean Arp, Rudolf Bauer, Paul Klee and Vasily Kandinsky in Europe, Rebay was converted to a new art form that Kandinsky called Non-Objective painting, which she embraced with great passion and fervor. Bauer, whose paintings she was obsessed with, was also her lover and mentor. From then on, Rebay would proselitize for Non- Objective painting until her death in 1967.

6000 gr.

ARCHIVE OF LETTERS AND A PHOTOGRAPH, A TOTAL OF 15 PIECES, TO THE MOTHER OF ETHEL KENNEDY

1949 - 1955. Letter. Very Good to Near Fine. Exceptional archive of 15 pieces including 4 TYPED LETTERS SIGNED from Merton to his typist, Ann Skakel (mother of Ethel Kennedy); a wonderful TYPED LETTER from Merton (signed in type) to his friend and teacher, Donald Walsh; 8 retained TYPED LETTERS from Skakel to Merton; a TYPED LETTER SIGNED from Walsh to Skakel; and a photograph of Merton's ordination annotated on the verso by Walsh. Superb content throughout with Merton's letters, SIGNED as "Father Louis" or "Father M. Louis Merton," containing much discussion of his work, including forwarding the carbon copy of his manuscript of his new book THE ASCENT TO TRUTH (not present here). There are maybe a dozen or so holograph additions by Merton in the letters. Merton's lengthy letter to Walsh discusses more spiritual matters: "The fact that I get scared of Our Lord and have to trust Him blindly about the present and the future is, however, sufficient pledge of what one must expect. So I turn to jelly on the threshold of a terrified love." The 8" x 10" original photograph of Merton's ordination, possibly unique, contains Walsh's detailed notes on the verso identifying those in the photograph and the location-- "the Basilica of the Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani, Trappist, Ky, on Ascension Day, May 26, 1949." Ann Skakel and her husband George were killed in an airplane crash not long after the date of the last letter in this archive. Ethel's devotion to her Catholic religion can be attributed to the faith of her mother.

However, he was also a champion of modern music, and performed modern works such as Bela Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra. His relationship with the Nazi's and attitude towards Adolf Hitler was a matter of much controversy. At his denazification trial, Furtwängler was charged with supporting Nazism by remaining in Germany, performing at Nazi party functions and with making anti-Semitic remarks against the part-Jewish conductor Victor de Sabata. However, he was eventually cleared on all these counts. All three articles are rare. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
