Typed Letter Signed, on his "Ausable Forks" imprinted stationery, 4to, Ausable Forks, NY. March 20, 1949.

      - Though Kent is better associated with his illustrations for Melville's "Moby Dick" and Voltaire's "Candide," his corespondent has apparently made an intriguing request of the artist that he consider his illustrations for "Bab Ballads" by W. S. Gilbert, and Lewis Carroll's "Hunting the Snark." Kent writes to an English professor referring to books of verses he illustrated. "With the exception of 'The Hunting of the Snark,' the 'Bab Ballads,' and such things which I have over and over again thoroughly enjoyed, I must say that 'enjoyment' is not the term for the deep emotion.that greater poetry has roused in me, I am not telling you what poems I have enjoyed, but what poems have most moved me." He continues to reply to his correspondent's request to suggest a poem for a book. ".there is little sense in mentioning "The Odyssey,' or even 'The Ancient Mariner,'.his final words to the Wedding Guest, beginning, 'Farewell, farewell, But this I tell.'and continuing to the end. These last stanzas, following all the poem that has preceded, are to me a deeply moving and convincing a creed for living as I know." He signs above the typed name, "Rockwell Kent." Fine insight into Kent's literary tastes. Paper clip rust stain on verso shows slightly on upper left margin.

Autograph Letter Signed, 8vo, on printed personalized stationery with an imprint of "Fantasmagoria," Big Sur, California, July 31, 1949.

      - Miller makes reference to German author, Hermann Hesse's ninth novel, "Siddhartha," (1922) published in English in 1951. Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891) French poet remembered for his poetry as well as his short libertine life. Miller's work was published as a book in 1952 by Mermod. To Bruno Adriani, Miller mentions French author Arthur Rimbaud and Hermann Hesse's classic, "Siddhartha." "Do you recall ever seeing a photograph of Rimbaud's mother? Mermod in Lausanne are bringing out the (2) parts of my work on Rimbaud in French, this year. Letter from H. L. Mermod advises no photo of the mother in the famous Matarosso Collection. Yet I saw one of her (Vitalie) in an old issue of 'Labyrinthe' (Mastarosso Coll too!). Wonder if this was a mistake of the printer? I suppose Mermod wishes to include some photos in the book. Roger Cornaz is doing the translation. Did you ever know Gerhart Muench (composer & pianist) from Dresden? He's in Altadema now and invites me frequently - rather amazing letters. Just read Hesse's 'Siddhartha' in French.Depresses me tremendously." He signs, "Henry Miller."

37 First Day Covers, opening of new Israeli post offices

, 1949-1952. 1949-1952. Very Good. (STAMPS) Thirty-seven (37) First Day Covers, each commemorating the opening of a new post office in Israel. 1949-1952. Printed in various colors, all highly graphic, many with pioneering scenes. Very Good condition.& & The opening of a post office, or a new mobile post office, was a barometer for population growth in the early days of Statehood. Each new opening was a cause for celebration, for, in most cases, it represented the beginning of a new neighborhood, and increased colonization of the Land. Each postcard, in some sense, serves as a historic document. Among the cities are: Azor, Tel Josef, Gan Shmuel, Ramla, Migdal Asqlon, Elat, Dir El Balah, Beit Yizhak, Caesarea, Kfar Hamakabi, Yavneh, Ganigar, and Beer Sheva.&

        Original Gelatin Silver Print Portrait

New York: , 1949. New York: , 1949. Vintage bromoil silver gelatin print (242 × 173 mm), studio wet-stamp, and pencil captioning verso. Very good. Superb, powerfully emotive image of the singer. Van Vechten told the story of the session in an article for Esquire magazine in 1962 ("Portraits of the Artists," volume 58, no.6). The meeting was arranged by Gerry Major, Geraldyn Dismond a noted African-American newspaper columnist and commentator, and the photographer had specifically asked Major to request that Holiday wore a gown, but she arrived "at the appointed hour in a plain grey suit and facial expression equally depressing." The session was going badly until Van Vechten produced some of his images of Bessie Smith, taken in 1936 the year before she died, which brought Holiday to tears as she explained how Smith had provided the major inspiration for her career. The singer's attitude improved considerably, and she was persuaded to wear a satin drape, arranged to look like an evening dress, for some of the shots, as here. Then at midnight, Billie announced that she had to go home, but that she would return, and Van Vechten, worried that she would cop and never return, sent his assistant to accompany her to Harlem. They duly came back bringing Mister, Billie's Boxer dog, and the mood lifted, the singer becoming lively and relaxed. When the session was over "she related in great detail the sad, bittersweet story of her tempestuous life." Van Vechten's wife Fania had joined the group, and "in a short time Fania, like the rest of us, was in tears, and suddenly, also like the rest of us, found herself attached to Billie as if she had known her intimately for years." Holiday stayed until shortly before dawn. "We never saw her again, but not one of us will ever forget her." Some of the results of the session were remarkable, probably unique in making manifest Holiday's essential mystery, her shifting balance between power and powerlessness, control and abdication, directness and misdirection. The present image is particularly evocative.

A rather utopian, post-apocalyptic future after the world is almost depopulated by a plague, where over 3 generations the survivors decide how much of modern civilization is relevant to the world they now inhabit. Still the most comprehensive viewpoint and best written approach to a post-apocalyptic world. Stephen King says this book was an inspiration for him in writing "The Stand." ; 8-1/4 x 5-5/8"; 373 pages .

"The paper introduced the concept of a "molecular disease", and is considered a major impetus to the development of molecular medicine. The paper helped establish that genes control not just the presence or absence of enzymes (as genetics had shown in the early 1940s) but also the specific structure of protein molecules. It was also an important triumph in the efforts of Pauling and others to apply the instruments and methods of the physical sciences to biology."         NINETEEN EIGHTY FOUR

Secker & Warburg , 1949. Secker & Warburg , 1949. First edition. Original green cloth with red lettering on the spine in the preferred maroon dustwrapper, complete with scarce Evening Standard wraparound band. A fine copy with an erased inscription to the front endpaper in a very good dustwrapper indeed, which has only moderate fading to the spine (much less than usual), minor wear to the spine ends and corners and a couple of small patches of wear through the front foredge. Overall a clean, bright copy of a particularly susceptible book, rarely seen in such good condition. One of the highlights and great prophetic writings of the twentieth century. Orwell began writing Nineteen Eighty-Four in 1945, knowing that he would need to change publisher in order to see it in print. As he had found with Animal Farm, Orwell's novels were now opposed to Gollancz's political principles, and so it was the firm of Secker & Warburg (also the publishers of Animal Farm) who took on the book. The book was due to be finished in early 1948, though when the time came Orwell told his publishers "It is just a ghastly mess as it stands, but the idea is so good that I could not possibly abandon it." It was published in June 1949 and by October had sold over 22,000 copies. Such phrases as 'Double Think', 'Newspeak' and 'Big Brother' coined in the book have since become common parlance and the novel a cornerstone of dystopian literature.
