The paper helped establish that genes control not just the presence or absence of enzymes (as genetics had shown in the early 1940s) but also the specific structure of protein molecules. It was also an important triumph in the efforts of Pauling and others to apply the instruments and methods of the physical sciences to biology."         The Love Letters of Mark Twain

New York: Harper, 1949 - Original black cloth, dust jacket. Slipcase. A fine copy. First edition of Samuel Clemens’s wonderful love letters to his wife Livy, signed by the author both “S. L. Clemens” and “Mark Twain” on the tipped-in limitation sheet. This is one of 155 numbered copies of the deluxe limited edition. The leaf also bears the notice, “these signatures of Mark Twain have been in the possession of Harper & Brothers for fifty years. There are no more.” These letters span the years from the couple’s initial courtship in 1868 through Livy’s death in 1904. In his long first letter to Livy, who had rebuffed him, Clemens writes in small part, “I do not regret that I have loved you, still love & shall always love you. I accept the situation, uncomplainingly, hard as it is. Of old I am acquaint- ed with grief, disaster & disappointment, & have borne these troubles as became a man. So, also, shall I bear this last & bitterest, even though it break my heart. I would not dishonor this worthiest love that has yet been born within me by any puerile thought, or word, or deed. It is better to have loved and lost you than that my life should have remained forever the blank it was before ” [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Skizzenbuch. Num. und vom Künstler signiertes Exemplar Nr. 189.

Bad Dürkheim : [E. D. Dill], 1949.. 23 Bl. : Abb. mit Text ; quer-gr. 8 Lw.. Einband gering berieben, sonst gut erhalten. In kleiner Auflage erschienen. Selten!

        8 letters signed.

Milan, 27 July 1949 through 16 February 1950.. Nine pages, on eight quarto and octavo leaves. In Italian. Occasional creases and minor isolated foxing, very good. Accompanied by typescript translations.. Manzu here writes extensively to Marcelo de Ridder, gallery owner and art dealer in Buenos Aires, concerning the nuts and bolts of an exhibition of his works de Ridder is organizing for late 1949. Always polite, but frequently exasperated, Manzu deals with burdens he feels are de Ridder's responsibilities (customs, shipping, etc), and is justifiably upset when, on 27 December 1949, he writes: "La mia mostra si e aperta e chiusa a mia insaputa senza nessure sapere dagli organizzatori la minima notizia, e questo nonostante le mie risetute preghiere, alle quali non e mai stato risposto. ("My exhibition has opened and closed unbeknownst to me, and without my having received the slightest notification from its organizers, despite my repeated requests which were never answered. I did not even receive a catalogue of the exhibition. I am truly amazed at this, could you try to at least have the courtesy to let me know where my works are now [...]", transl.). The 16 February 1950 letter is far more conciliatory and grateful, perhaps as a consequence of having received the exhibition documentation and photographs, with which he is pleased, as well as received proceeds so far of "two hundred thousand lire". - Manzu is most widely known for his public works of sculpture, including the bronze doors at St. Peter's Basilica and two reliefs for Rockefeller Center, but was accomplished and prolific in other media as well. During WWII, his anti-Fascist drawings forced him underground, and in 1968 he was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize for his public stance against Western policies in Southeast Asia.

Radiation Theories of Tomonaga, Schwinger, and Feynman

Lancaster, PA and New York, NY: for The American Physical Society by the American Institute of Physics, February 1 and June 1, 1949. Lancaster, PA and New York, NY: for The American Physical Society by the American Institute of Physics, February 1 and June 1,, 1949. [In] The Physical Review Volume 75, Number 3. [Together with] The S Matrix in Quantum Electrodynamics. [In] The Physical Review Volume 75, Number 11. 2 volumes, octavo. Original green wrappers printed in black. Ownership ink stamps of C. Moller to upper wrappers. Wrappers a little rubbed with the occasional small spot, spines toned with some closed tears, minor creases to the edges of contents in volume II, contents very faintly toned. An excellent set. First editions, first impressions of the papers that demonstrated the equivalence between Richard Feynman's diagram-based approach to quantum electrodynamics and Julius Schwinger and Sin-Itiro Tomonaga's operator method approach. Both theories were presented for the first time at the Pocono Conference in April 1948, with Feynman and Schwinger going head-to-head, each wary of the other and jealously guarding their intellectual territory. Freeman Dyson, "one of England's two or three most brilliant mathematical prodigies" (Gleick, Genius, p. 235) was then a graduate student at Cornell, where Feynman was teaching, and though he did not attend the conference he eagerly absorbed the notes made by attendees. At the end of the summer he submitted a "manuscript representing a cathartic outpouring of work… Dyson had found the mathematical common ground he was sure must exist [between the two theories]… His chief insight was to focus on a so-called scattering matrix, or S matrix, a mustering of all the probabilities associated with the different routes from an initial state to a given end point. He now advertised a 'unified development of the subject' – more reliable than Feynman and more useable than Schwinger" (Gleick p. 267). But Dyson was concerned about publishing his own paper on two unpublished theories by more senior physicists – would he offend Feynman or Schwinger? Discussing the predicament with Hans Bethe, Dyson argued that "it was Schwinger's and Feynman's own fault that they had not published 'any moderately intelligible account': Schwinger, he suspected, was polishing obsessively, and Feynman simply couldn't be bothered with paperwork. It was irresponsible. They were retarding the development of science. By publicising their work Dyson was performing a service to humanity, he argued… By January the war had been won. At the American Physical Society meeting Dyson found himself almost as much a hero as Schwinger had been the year before. Sitting in the audience with Feynman beside him, he listened as a speaker talked admiringly of 'the beautiful theory of Feynman-Dyson'. Feynman said loudly, 'Well, Doc, you're in'." (Gleick, pp. 267-270).

My Early Life, inscribed by Churchill to the young son of Churchill's Secretary of State for War

London: Odhams Press Limited, 1949. London: Odhams Press Limited, 1949. Hardcover. Fair. This is a post-war reprint of Churchill's famous autobiography, inscribed to the young son of Churchill's Secretary of State for War. The inked inscription in four lines on the first free endpaper reads: "Inscribed by / Winston S. Churchill / for / Simon Head." Simon Andrew Head (born 11 November 1944) was the second son of Viscount Antony Henry Head GCMG, CBE, MC, PC (1906-1983). Antony Head was a soldier, Member of Parliament, and diplomat. He had a distinguished military record, serving throughout the Second World War, both with heroism on the battlefield at Boulogne and with a "clear brain and notable endowment of common sense" (ODNB) at combined operations headquarters, attending the Casablanca, Tehran, Quebec, and Yalta conferences and achieving the rank of Brigadier. Elected to Parliament as a conservative MP in 1945, he "made a name for himself as a fluent and persuasive speaker on defence. So it was not surprising that on 31 October 1951 Winston Churchill, who liked him personally and admired his drive and sharpness of intellect, made him a privy councillor and secretary of state for war." (ODNB) Head held this position during the entirety of Churchill's second premiership (1951-1955), becoming Minister of Defence after Anthony Eden became prime minister in April 1955. Head was created Viscount in 1960 and subsequently served as British High Commissioner to Nigeria from 1960-1963 and Malaysia (1963-1966). (Gilbert, Vol. VIII, p.1206) On the day Simon Head was born - the same day of the armistice in 1918 - Churchill was still wartime prime minister and spent the day in Paris, which had been liberated just two and a half months prior, as the guest of de Gaulle at the Quai d'Orsay. (Gilbert, Vol. VIII, p.1057-60) Simon Head was nearly seven years old when Churchill began his Second Premiership and his father became Churchill's Secretary of State for War. The first edition of My Early Life was published by Thornton Butterworth in 1930. Covering the years from Churchill's birth in 1874 to his first few years in Parliament, the book proved among the most popular of Churchill's many published works and saw many editions and printings during (and well beyond) Churchill's lifetime. Odhams Press Limited began issuing reprints in 1947. This copy is the "standard binding" of the third Odhams printing of 1949. Odhams did not publish another printing until 1957, so this 1949 printing would have been the one available during WSC's second and final premiership (1951-1955) when Simon Head's father served in Churchill's Cabinet. Certainly it would have been among the most accessible and engaging of Churchill's works for the young son of a distinguished soldier and statesman. This book itself is an uninspiring copy of an unremarkable edition, but nonetheless a nice association inscription in perhaps the most popular and engaging work in the Churchill canon. Condition of the book is only fair, owing to considerable fading, soiling, and wear to the binding. The title page gutter shows a split and is a bit tender, but the mull beneath nonetheless remains fully attached to the text block. Notably, the contents remain bright with no previous ownership marks other than the author's inscription. Very light spotting appears confined to the first and final blank endsheets and the title page. We also note some soiling to the edge of the title page. The red stained page edges show some fading but retain generally even color. The inscribed first free endpaper shows some overall soiling and mild spotting, but the inscription is nonetheless a clean example, clear and unfaded. The book would lend itself well to either a decorative clamshell preservation case or a fine rebinding. Bibliographic reference: A91.9.f, Woods/ICS A37(g.3), Langworth p.141
