The Outermost House: A Year of Life on the Great Beach of Cape Cod

New York: Rinehart & Co.. (1949). Twelfth printing. New introduction by the author. Illustrated with photographs by William A. Bradford and others. Corners a bit bumped, near fine in an about fine dustwrapper with a very short tear. Warmly Inscribed by the author: "For George Swetman Esq. with the profound affection of his old friend and colleague. Henry Beston." A nature classic that captures the essence of place and that continues to endure, this copy comes with a wonderful eight page (both sides of four octavo leaves) Autograph Letter Signed twice by Beston on his Chimney Farm stationery to Mrs. Swetman sending the book, and explaining the creation of the book. In small part: "I wrote it a few years after I had emerged from War I. Being still sick at heart with this vast political massacre of the young by the young, I went as far as I could go to the world of nature and wonder, and just sat quiet awhile like the Bhudda under the Bo tree. After a while a religious sense of acceptance and peace possessed me, a sense I have never lost. After marriage, I bought from relatives the farm we now occupy, where I live very happily with my attendant bears, the chief of whom is my famous 'Oswald', an enchanting bear who on autumn nights is given permission to sleep by the open fire." Beston goes on to describe his life in Maine, and his upcoming trip to stay on a Maine island with a friend whose "occupation is the collaring of poor, innocent lobsters. I weep for them as the walrus wept for the oyster." With original envelope. A wonderful letter. .

. Emballages soignes, expedition rapide. Photographies originales du livre visibles sur librairie-solstices .

        The Final War

Perri Press, Portland, OR 1949 - Portland, OR: Perri Press, 1949. First Edition. 8 1/2" x 5 1/2", plain red staplebound wrappers. Unpaginated, but 10 single-page mimeographed chapters, I through X, are each faced by a tipped-in black-and-white illustration by a different illustrator. Foreword/acknowledgment and the unusual story itself by Keller. Sun shadow on front cover, else near fine with only minor toning to paper margins. A very scarce - and unusual - production of David H. Keller, M.D. (David Henry Keller), who primarily wrote, under this and a host of pseudonyms, for science fiction and fantasy/horror genre pulps. After the Portland [Oregon] Science Fantasy Society held an illustrating contest which yielded, as its winner, these ten very diverse pieces, Keller decided to write a short-short story tying them together, as a tribute. To do that in ten one-page chapters would be more than just a stretch, something Keller no doubt knew. The result - which incorporates ten different styles and ten different subjects for the illustrations, from a Poe-like candlelit haunting to a cubist "Dimension Dweller", a rather stunningly presaging Death Star, fetching females both human and not, decent impersonations of Frank Paul and Virgil Finlay, and even a slimy Lovecraftian Cthulhu (yes, Keller did work The Mythos into this brief effort, though the Big C unavoidably ends up on.Saturn; one of the illustrations is of the ringed planet) it's a story which is necessarily too breathless and fun-loving for character development. But then, it wasn't meant to be anything other than what it is. What it is, now, is a nice, and extraordinarily scarce, piece of science fiction history. L100 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Autograph Letter, signed ("Bill"), to Mrs. Marrion Anderson & her son Arthur ("Bratto")

Saugus, Calif ("Barracks 19"), ca. 22 august 1949 - A touching letter from the 56-year-old Tilden, the greatest tennis player of the first half of the twentieth century, then recently incarcerated for a second offense on charges of stemming from his homosexual encounters with young boys. Tilden writes from prison to his closest friends Marrion and her son Arthur Anderson, a young tennis player whom Tilden had adopted as his protégé and pupil. According to Frank Deford, in BIG BILL TILDEN, Tilden actually lived with the Andersons twice for an extended period, and "The Andersons truly loved him. Many times he said to Marrion, 'You know, Arthur's the only real son I ever had.' And to Arthur, 'You and your mother are the only close family I ever had.'" The Andersons never deserted Tilden, even in this, his darkest hour. Tilden writes: "Dear Marrion and Bratto, Just to tell you how much I enjoyed the visit today - Next Friday is Bratto's birthday & since I have no hope of being with you then, please Marrion, even if the car is his present, give him $10 out of my money, with my love, and see he gets something he wants -" Tilden then turns to Arthur with tennis advice: "Now Bratto, Pal, remember all we talked about today, to play cool, intelligent mixed tennis, not to rush and to return service. This is only to let you know I am thinking of you and love you both very much & I'll be seeing you Sunday if not before. Always & ever, Your Bill." According to Deford, Tilden was released on December 18, 1949, just a few days before the Associated Press poll of the half-century voted Bill Tilden "the greatest athlete in his sport by a margin larger than any other - Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, Bobby Jones, Red Grange. Of them all, Tilden was voted the most dominant -" 5 x 8 inches. 1-1/2 pp. in pencil on single sheet of ruled paper. With accompanying envelope addressed in Tilden's hand, postmarked Aug, 22, 1949

The Post-War Speeches - a full set of jacketed U.S. first editions: The Sinews of Peace, Europe Unite, In the Balance, Stemming the Tide

Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston 1949 - Here is a full set of U.S. editions of Churchill's postwar speeches in the scarce dust jackets. These volumes span the period from immediately after the Second World War, when Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, through the end of 1952, during his second Premiership. The events encompassed by these years are in many ways no less dramatic than those of the war years - the unraveling of the British Empire, the post-war recovery, the beginning of the Cold War, Soviet acquisition of the atomic bomb and U.S. invention of the hydrogen bomb. The U.S. postwar speeches were published in very small numbers, making jacketed U.S. editions much rarer than their British counterparts. Collectors should note that the U.S. postwar speeches compmrise only four volumes, as the fifth and final volume, The Unwritten Alliance, had no U.S. edition. All four volumes offered here are in near-fine condition with no spotting and no previous owner inscriptions. All four dust jackets are unclipped, still bearing their original front flap prices. Stemming the Tide (one of only 1,850 copies printed and the scarcest of the four) is bright, tight, and square with sharp corners and clean contents. The dust jacket remains bright and clean with unfaded red spine lettering, but shows some chipping at the spine ends and corners. In the Balance (one of 2,000 copies printed) retains a clean, tight, and square brown cloth binding with only trivial shelf wrinkling at the spine ends, as well as crisp, bright contents marred only by dust soiling to the top edge. The unclipped jacket retains unfaded red spine color, showing some edge wear, including a few short closed tears and some chipping at the spine ends. Europe Unite (one of 2,500 copies printed) retains a bright and clean turquoise cloth binding with only minor wrinkling at the spine ends. The contents are bright and clean with minor dust soiling to the top edge. The dust jacket is clean, bright, and highly complete. Spine presentation is superior, with only a barely discernible hint of sunning, fractional losses at the spine corners, and a tiny abrasion above the publisher's name. The Sinews of Peace (one of 3,000 copies printed) features a clean, vivid blue binding, marred only by small bumps at the top corners of the rear cover. The contents are crisp, clean, bright, and tight. The dust jacket is bright and unclipped, showing none of the usual fading, with minor wear mostly confined to the corners and spine ends. All four dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers.
