1949. Rare Edition in Hebrew: <I>“Emile Zola / J’Accuse / 1898.”</I> Hardcover, 92 pages, 6” x 9.5”. Jerusalem: Bialik Foundation, 1949. Soiled front and back free-endpapers, damaged spine. Uncut. No dust jacket. Bound between pages39 and 40 is a folded, four page, 10” x 13.5” reprint of the January 13, 1898 issue of the French newspaper <I>“L’Aurore”</I> with Zola’s <I>“J’Accuse...!”</I> letter to French President Felix Faure on the front page, in fine condition. Seven page <I>“Prologue”</I> by Leon Blum, signed by him in facsimile. Except for spine, in very good condition.<br /><br />From “The Palestine Post,” September 30, 1949: “The Jewish Agency, through its Bialik Foundation, has repaid a debt due by all Jewry to Emile Zola in republishing in facsimile the issue of ‘L’Aurore,’ the newspaper containing his history-making article ‘J’Accuse....!’ 50 years after its explosive appearance in the midst of the Dreyfus affair ... It is fitting that it should be given anew to the generation which, by creating the State of Israel, has struck the most effective blow against the anti-Semitism which Zola fought so resoundingly. At the same time, the fact that the volume containing the reprint was prepared for publication last January but could not be issued till now owing to the siege conditions in Jerusalem early this year might well be taken as symbolic of the fact that vigilance must never be relaxed. The commemorative volume which being published by the Bialik Foundation, is naturally in Hebrew, contains a preface specially contributed by M. Leon Blum, who as a young lawyer took part in the preparation of the defence for Zola in the subsequent trial. Two translations of ‘J’Accuse....!’, one newly made by Itzhak Shenberg and one by A.A. Rakovsky in 1898, provide an instructive contrast between the fluid Hebrew of today and the stilted phraseology of then. There follows an appraisal by Mr. Benzion Dinaburg of the historic effects of Zola’s article, and a chronological record of the Dreyfus affair. The whole has been produced with the good paper, good print and general good taste that have come to be expected of the Bialik Foundation’s publications.”<br /><br />Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935), a Jewish French army officer, was accused of selling military secrets to the German military attaché. Convicted of treason in 1894 despite his protests of innocence and flimsy evidence, Dreyfus was imprisoned on Devil's Island. French novelist Emile Zola (1840-1902), who was Jewish, wrote a scathing letter to French President Felix Faure beginning “J'Accuse” which was published on the front page of the French newspaper “L’Aurore” on January 13, 1898. His letter led to an investigation which proved that the papers on which Dreyfus had been convicted were forged. Lieutenant Colonel Georges Picquart had found evidence that Major E.F. Esterhazy had engaged in espionage, not Dreyfus, and it was Esterhazy's handwriting that was found on the evidence incriminating Dreyfus. Instead of remedying the injustice, Picquart was removed from his post and the French staged anti-Semitic riots. Dreyfus, however, was given a second trial, and, although he was again found guilty, received a pardon from French President Emile Loubet who had succeeded Faure in 1899. Following yet another trial in which he tried to clear his name, in 1906, Dreyfus’ original conviction was finally set aside and he was restored to his rank and awarded the Legion of Honor.<br /><br />The Dreyfus Affair brought Leon Blum (1872-1950) into politics. Campaigning as a Dreyfusard brought him into contact with socialist leader Jean Jaures whom he greatly admired. He began writing for the socialist daily newspaper and eventually joined the Socialist Party. Blum became France’s first Socialist and first Jewish Prime Minister, serving from 1936-1937 and March-April 1938. In 1940, after the fall of France, he was arrested by the Vichy government and indicted on charges of war guilt. Blum was freed by U.S. forces from a German concentration camp in May 1945. From December 1946 to January 1947 he headed a caretaker government, pending the election of the first President of the Fourth Republic. Leon Blum died six months after this book was published.<br />

        Portrait d'Aimé Césaire.

Paris: Editions Fragrance,, 1949. Etching with drypoint on Montval paper with 'Montval and Corps Perdu' watermark. Sheet size 56.5 x 39.3 cm. Excellent condition. Presented float mounted in a white gold leaf frame with acrylic glass. Edition of about 200 unnumbered. Signed in pencil lower left by Picasso. A proof printed together with the uncorrected title page of Corps Perdu. Picasso and poet Aimé Césaire (1913-2008) met in 1948 at the Communist-led World Congress of Intellectuals for Peace, in Wroclaw, Poland. Césaire had been the figurehead of the 1930s Negritude movement in France, a group of writers who hoped to foster a sense of shared heritage throughout the African diaspora, reasserting their identities in opposition to Western colonial perspectives. Both Picasso and Césaire challenged and renewed the conventions of their respective mediums, and, in addition to their interest in Communist politics and African art, they shared Surrealism's interest in dreams, the power of the unconscious mind, and the irrational and fantastic. Césaire's text explores society's brutal positing of the black man as half-human, half-beast, while Picasso's illustrations fuse male and female sexual organs with plant-inspired forms. (MoMA)

[New York]: Famous Fantastic Mysteries, 1949.(). Black and white drawing by the famed science fiction and fantasy illustrator Hannes Bok. Bok's color cover art and black and white interior drawings appeared in many science fiction and fantasy magazines of the 1940s and 1950s, among them Weird Tales, the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, Famous Fantastic Mysteries, and many others. It illustrated "The Counter-Charm," story by Margaret St. Clair that appeared in the August 1949 issue of Famous Fantastic Mysteries, p. 111. Handwritten at bottom: "The Counter-charm"--M. St. Clair.         A Season in Hell, Une Saison en Enfer [DESIGN BINDING - Paul Delrue]

London: John Lehmann, 1949. 1st Edition. Leather. Fine. Vaughan, Keith. First edition, in a custom binding, octavo size, 69 pp., signed by binder Paul Delrue. First edition, in a custom binding. Paul Delrue (b. 1944) bound his first book at the age of 15 in 1959, and knew he had discovered his calling. He became an apprentice at the University College, London from 1961-64 and worked there as a binder until 1971. He set up his own bindery in 1971 and in 1981 was elected a Fellow of the Society of Bookbinders, having founded and served as chairman of the Chester and North Wales branch in 1979. Paul has earned numerous awards and honours, including the Silver medal and three other awards in 1991 in The Bookbinding Competition. He was elected a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in the same year; the following year he was awarded two Bronze medals in the prestigious Prix Paul Bonet. Paul developed the lacunose style of binding which is now used by other binders; his work is highly prized and springs from within him; as he writes on his web site, "A book and its binding are inextricably linked - the one complements the other in a way which creates something more than just a book with an attractive cover. My design bindings draw on what a book says to me and how it inspires me emotionally". Rimbaud is Delrue's favorite poet, and this is a sumptuous design binding of the first edition, including illustrations and the dust-jacket which is inlaid to the upper board of the case. ***DESCRIPTION: Full blue marbled sheepskin by Thomas Schmitz, onlay to upper board depticts Arthur Rimbaud at 17 smoking a pipe and is hand drawn in black by the binder, small circular onlay to lower board, housed a blue cloth fall-down-back box, with the upper wrapper of the original dust-jacket inlaid to the upper board and ruled in blind, lined in grey suede, bound with marbled endpapers, frontispiece and eight full-page illustrations, [i-vi], 1-69 pp., first edition in a custom binding, signed on the final page of text by Paul Delrue. ***CONDITION: A stunning, fine example of both the condition of the first edition, and the binding, in a fine box. Some might disapprove of a rebinding of a first edition, but in this case it is more of an homage or collaboaration, a loving new home built by a kindred spirit, and a very fine way to enjoy the first edition of the text. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. The event that appears to have brought these men together was the 1950 meeting of the Pigskin Club [of Washington], a largely African-American fraternal organization based around football and organized by Dr. Charles B. Fisher in 1938. Although white, Harman gave the 1950 principal address, a testament to the organization's attempt to overcome racial prejudice through democracy in sports. Both Henderson and Tyson served in various officer capacities, although it does not appear that Harman was a member. A Near Fine copy with the slightest cock to boards and one faint mark to the bottom front board; in the scarce pictorial dust jacket, which is unclipped ($4.00), but rubbed and worn with chipping to spine ends; a few water droplets to front panel; Good+. A highly, collectible copy with a significant association that signifies an attempt by men such as Henderson and Harman to extirpate racial prejudice through sports.

        Nineteen Eighty-Four.

London Secker & Warburg 1949 - First edition, 8vo, original cloth, mild sunning around spine, in the original red dust-jacket, usual loss of tone to spine, small splits and chipping to spine ends, rubbed at fore-edge of upper panel, but otherwise a better copy than one usually finds. An attractive unsophisticated copy of one of the 20th century's landmark works of fiction, and a classic of dystopian literature. The jacket is found printed in either green or red, with opinions vacillating over the years as to which is preferred or most scarce. The red in particular is notorious for losing colour at the spine, but this example is better than many, with both panels in very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Sheltering Sky

New York: New Directions, 1949. Author's first book, basis for the 1990 Bernardo Bertolucci film starring Debra Winger and John Malkovich. Fine and unread in a Very Good+ dust jacket. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Jacket with a touch of nicking to the extremities, and a tiny closed tear to the front panel, repaired with cello tape on the verso. Flap folds with some cracking, unrepaired. Bowles' first novel, which follows Port Moresby and his wife Kit's harrowing Saharan travels after WWII, established his literary reputation and is considered a landmark of 20th century literature. In his 1949 New York Times review of the novel, Tennessee Williams described it as "a chronicle of startling adventure against a background of the Sahara and the Arab-populated regions of the African Continent... In this external aspect the novel is an account of startling adventure. In its interior aspect, "The Sheltering Sky" is an allegory of the spiritual adventure of the fully conscious person into modern experience...a first-rate story of adventure by a really first-rate writer" (Williams). Modern Library Best 100 Novels in English. Fine in Very Good + dust jacket. Fine in Very Good + dust jacket.

        The Dreams UNCORRECTED PROOF

London: Jonathan Cape. Good with no dust jacket. 1949. Uncorrected Proof. Paperback. Sandy-ish coloured paper wraps printed in black to the front and back covers only. Dusty covers, with some edgewear and splits to the spine (now repaired). Also the covers have some light creases and a few marks. Page fore-edges dust ingrained and with a few small spots - brown and pink. Internally page corners were curled/creased, and the top of the first blank endpaper and the top of the title page both have a repaired tear - but no loss. One small closed tear further inside but apart from those repairs, the text block is generally very clean with no inscriptions, and is otherwise unmarked. Interestingly this Proof is DATED 1949 - and although most proofs are sent out pre-publication - the fact that this actually bears the printed date "First Published 1949", would indicate that it was going to be published in 1949 and not in 1950 when it was finally published. A scarce novel, the last of three by an author whose work often teetered on the border of Kafkaesque fantasy. Friedl Benedikt was a German Jew who fled first to France, and then England before the war, along with Elias Canetti with whom she had both a personal and professional relationship. She died at the age of 37 in 1953 in Paris. A Very Scarce Title and particularly so with the date anomoly. See Images. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall .

A drama of revenge, the film follows the machinations of a war veteran, Nick Garos, employed as a truck driver hauling California produce. Complications involve the crooked produce dealer who is out to cheat him as well as the two women in his life, his fiancà Polly, and the amoral Rica.
