        Two Letters from Horton Foote

Washington DC. 1949. Two Autographed Letters Signed from two-time Academy Award-winning screenwriter and playwright Horton Foote. Both fine except for two holes along the margins of each letter (affecting a total of three words) where they were placed in a binder. The letters are dated August 31, 1949, and September 6, 1949, shortly before Foote's returned from Washington DC, where he ran an acting school with his wife and his friend, Vincent Donehue. The letters are addressed to "Arnold," likely L. Arnold Weisseberg, a theater lawyer with whom Foote had consulted in the past. In them he mentions the tough time had in running the school, his upcoming visit to New York, and his new play which he wants Weisseberg and actress Judith Evelyn to read. The unnamed play is The Chase, a smashing success that opened at The Playhouse Theater in 1952 with Jose Ferrer directing, and signaled Foote's return to Broadway. An interesting pair of letters from one of America's premiere stage and film writers who was then on the verge of success. .

        Snow Song

Paris: (Frederic Prokosch). 1949. First. First edition. Decorated self-wrappers with white printed label. 24mo. Fine. Out of a total edition of 44 copies, this is copy "d" of 10 lettered copies on Sienese paper. There were also 10 copies each on Florentine, Venetian, and Roman paper, and four on Sicilian paper. Signed by the author. A brief poem, one of the author's rare "butterfly books," this one issued as a Christmas Greeting. Prokosch was an American novelist of remarkable promise who later fell under a cloud for manufacturing some spurious "rare first editions," which he did while experimenting with the handpress he used to manufacture the butterfly books. Additionally he reprinted some of the books between 1978-1980, but the provenance of this book, and the owner's notes that accompany the book indicate that it was obtained in the 1950s. His reputation has suffered despite the fact that his books were both a critical and popular success at the time of publication. Rare. OCLC locates six copies (of the total edition) in institutions. .

        AN ALPHABET FOR GOURMETS. Inscribed.

The Viking Press,, New York 1949 - Fisher, M.F.K. AN ALPHABET FOR GOURMETS. Inscribed Copy. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1949. First Edition. 8vo., 256pp. Publisher's mauve cloth stamped in black & white (with a charming black & white stamp of a Roman feaster on the upper cover). [Marvin Bileck, illustrator]. Warmly inscribed by Fisher on the ffe.: "For the [____] / Berkeley, 28.V.57 / from a fellow connoisseur of chilis vellanos - / M.F.K. Fisher" A fine copy in a near fine dustwrapper, mildly faded at the spine as usual - the chocolate brown colour easily subject to sunning. Delightful drawings illustrate each letter of the alphabet: A is for dining Alone, B is for Bachelors, G is for Gluttony, E is for Exquisite, K is for Kosher; P is for Peas, W is for Wanton, Y is for Yak, Z is for Zakuski, "a Russian hors d'oeuvre", etc. In Alphabet for Gourmets, M.F.K. Fisher arranges a selection of her essays in a whimsical way that reveals the breadth & depth of her passion. Fisher alights on both long-time obsessions & idiosyncratic digressions. As usual, she liberates her readers from caution & slavish adherence to culinary tradition - & salts her writings with a healthy dose of humour. Books of the Century, pp. 114-15. Very uncommon Inscribed. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
