Paris: , 1949. Two colour lithograph - yellow and black - poster. Framed and glazed, floated on black background mount in a black-stained wood box frame. Striking abstract expressionist design by Danest. A little browned, some surface soiling, but overall very good. Fine, uncommon, and very French poster, for one of the competing jazz periodicals of the immediate post-war period, the full name of which gives a flavour of the "debate": La Gazette du jazz. A short-lived defence, just 14 issues between 1949-51.

        Shane (First Edition)

Houghton, Mifflin, Boston 1949 - First Edition. The author's first book, one of the best Westerns ever written, which in 1953 was adapted into one of the best films the genre has ever seen (with a script by A.B. Guthrie, Jr.), in which a lone gunfighter comes to the aid of a small community. Though not nominated, Alan Ladd gave an Oscar-worthy performance. Jack Palance, despite saying only 12 lines, received an Academy Award nomination for his creepy, career-defining role. A classic which transcends the genre and can be appreciated on many levels. Very Good plus in a Near Fine, professionally restored dust jacket. Book is bumped at the spine ends and is lightly shelfworn, but quite clean and bright overall. Jacket has had some professional repairs and restoration made at the front panel and the crown. Apart from some faint creasing to the front panel, presents beautifully.         MAGNASCO

1949 - GEIGER, Benno. MAGNASCO. Bergamo: Istituto Italiano d'Arti Grafiche, 1949. First, limited edition; this copy is number 507 from a numbered edition of 1500 copies that are signed by the author. Illustrated with 494 plates, of which 29 are color. 196 pp., + plates. Folio, brown morocco spine with gilt title and accents, natural buckram covered boards with title and illustration printed to upper board, brown endpapers. Front pastedown has an old bookseller's catalog description tipped-in. But for a small bit of rubbing at spine, it is a fine copy. Housed in a worn and faded publisher's paper-covered clamshell box that lacks one of the short side panels, shows evidence of earlier tape repairs (now removed), and is splitting at several folds. It is unusual to find the book with the box. A handsome volume about the life and work of the Italian rococo painter Alessandro Magnasco (1667-1749), also known as "il Lissandrino."

The Le Chatelier principle in linear programming. U.S. Air Force Project RAND report RM-210.

RAND Corporation, Santa Monica, CA 1949 - Samuelson, Paul Anthony (1915-2009). The Le Chatelier principle in linear programming. U.S. Air Force Project RAND report RM-210. Offset typescript. 18ff. Santa Monica, CA: The RAND Corporation, 4 August 1949. 280 x 217 mm. Original printed wrappers with author and title of paper supplied in original typescript, three or four small marginal tears, but fine otherwise. Samuelson's copy, no. 25 of most likely 50 copies or fewer, assigned to Samuelson on the title in a secretarial hand.First Edition, the Author's Own Copy, of this rare and important research memorandum, in which Samuelson first applied the Le Chatelier principle of thermodynamics-which he had introduced into economics two years before-to the field of linear programming. Extremely Rare, with only one copy (Duke University) cited in OCLC. This working paper, prepared under the auspices of Project RAND (later the RAND Corporation), was most likely issued in an edition of 50 copies or fewer; a note on the title reads that "RAND Research Memoranda are available to authorized persons or agencies for their use and further dissemination is not permitted." Paul Anthony Samuelson, the first American to receive the Nobel Prize in Economics, has often been called "the father of modern economics" due to the fact that he, more than anyone else, was responsible for incorporating the use of mathematics and the principles of optimization that characterize the modern paradigm of economic analysis. In his magnum opus, The Foundations of Economic Analysis (1947), Samuelson established the method of "comparative statics" by adapting the Le Châtelier principle of thermodynamics, in order to solve the fundamental problem of explaining how the coordinates of an equilibrium point defined by a system of equations shift when one or more of the given determining parameters changes. Le Châtelier's principle can loosely be formulated in the following way: "If the external conditions of a thermodynamic system are altered, the equilibrium of the system will tend to move in such a direction as to oppose the change in external conditions." In the context of economics this principle yields itself as the property that if the quantity of one of the available resources changes, then its shadow price changes in the opposite direction, or in other words, the marginal value of a resource increases if its amount is reduced, and vice versa. Samuelson's method of comparative statics lies at the core of modern economic analysis. In this research paper Samuelson first introduced his principle, which later became known as the Samuelson-Le Châtelier (or correspondence) principle, into the newly born field of linear programming, which is a mathematical method for determining a way to achieve the best outcome in a given mathematical model. The method was first developed in 1939 by Russian mathematician Leonid Kantorovich, and further expanded in the following decade by George Dantzig, who published the simplex method in 1947, and John von Neumann, who developed the theory of the duality in the same year. Linear programming is used most often in business, economics and operations research. Samuelson published numerous works on linear programming, culminating with Linear Programming and Economic Analysis (1958), co-authored with Robert Dorfman and Robert Solow.         [Photo Album]: Girl's High School Album from Connecticut

New Haven, Connecticut. 1949. Oblong quarto. Green leather over paper boards embossed with gilt decorations measuring 10" x 13". Assembled are 230 black and white photographs of various sizes from roughly 2" x 3.5" to 7" x 9" affixed to stiff black paper with captions. Some toning, creasing on occasional photos, and tiny tears on the paper leaves thus very good. A photo album documenting New Haven, Connecticut native, Rhoda Sochrin, while attending Wilbur Cross High School and later Southern Connecticut State University. The exploits of young New Englanders in the late 1940s and early 1950s plays out through the extensive pages of Sochrin's album. Beach excursions filled with antics of boys trying to impress their female counterparts with handstands and silly poses; a girl smoking with the caption, "for blackmail use"; another of Rhoda and "Howie" states, "the lovers? Either I'm asleep or I'm dreamy eyed." Later pictures show the group at a Phi Beta dance and include professional "souvenir" photographs with a live band pictured behind them. Sochrin also collected autographs and publicity photos of celebrities, present are Howard Smith, Karen Rich, and Artie Shaw. Rhoda was a member of the current affairs club and aspired to be a writer and contributed to her university's literary journal. A nice insight on the goings on of the life of the American teenager after the war. .
