Black Incantation. 50 Danseurs et Chanteurs D'Afrique. Direction Artistique Rikar

Paris: S.P.I.C. [Societé Parisienne d'Impression et Cartonnage],, [c.1949]. Grande Semaine de Gala aux Ambassadeurs. Lithographic theatre poster. Framed and glazed, floated on black background mount in a black-stained wood box frame. Striking image in sepia, black, yellow and green by Castelli Aubin. Somewhat browned overall, some small repairs at the corners, and one short tear with a cellotape repair verso, overall very good. Scarce and striking poster for a Black "Ballet" written by the musician/artistic director Fonseca-Nou Ka Sonjé, better known by his "Portuguese" name Louis Vera da Fonseca. Born in the Cape Verde Islands of a Senegalese mother and Cape Verdean father, Fonseca showed early aptitude for music and dance, and after settling in Paris became involved in radio broadcasts of music from the French colonies. The present poster was for a spectacular show first staged at the Casino de Deauville, where reputedly on its première the Aga Khan offered a "tip" of 500,000 Francs, which Fonseca distributed among the cast. Fonseca has been categorized as an early proponent of a populist "world music", perhaps it would be fairer to see him as operating on the fringes of the Négritude movement.

URBANISTICA Rivista dell'Istituto Nazionale Urbanistica - Direttore Adriano Olivetti.

Torino,, 1949-1969.. In-4 p., bross. figur. Cfr. Cat. Archivolto, n. 6, 1993 - Bianchetti 1987, p. 32-39.

        Parfums Lucien Lelong

Paris: Lucien Lelong, 13, rue Alphonse de Neuville., 1949. Illustrations de A.M. Cassandre. Octavo. Original plain card boards in cream wrapper with the company device embossed within a debossed cartouche in the centre of the upper panel. 10 plates in colour lithography after illustrations by Cassandre, and similarly printed plates from photographs of the perfume bottles themselves by Réné Messager. Wraps a little rubbed and irregularly toned, spine slightly chipped head and tail, repair to short split at the head of the upper joint, contemporary gift inscription to the front free endpaper, else very good. First edition, no copy of this spectacular promotional brochure traced on line. Largely forgotten today, apart amongst the couture cognoscenti, Lelong was enormously influential in his day. After the First World War Lelong took charge of his parents' small fashion house, which was noted for its espousal of the modern look - the chic, autobiographical heroine of Colette's 1908 novella Les Vrilles de la vigne is dressed by Lelong - and continued their tradition of innovation advancing the concept of the "kinétique", clothes 'constructed in such a way that their true shape would emerge in movement, not at rest'. Not a designer himself, he employed a number of young designers who were later to strike out on their own, Christian Dior, Pierre Balmain, and Hubert de Givenchy all spent time developing collections for Lelong. His contribution to the success of the house was in his vision, and his marketing brilliance; he redesigned his parents' salon decorating entirely in black, so that it was said to resemble a black-lined jewellery box, he offered discounts to society women who agreed to be photographed in his dresses, and was early into the branded perfume market. The first fragrances offered by Lelong were enigmatically named A, B, C, J and N, intending to evoke a sense of mystery and romance. Over 30 years created a total of 27 different fragrances. The artfully designed bottles were largely the work of Lelong himself. This superbly produced "catalogue" features ten suitably mysterious and evocative plates by Cassandre, (né Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron), the Ukrainian-born French painter, illustrator, poster designer and typographer, probably best-known for his magnificently imposing poster for the great CGT liner Normandie.

        Adonais.

Percy Bisshe SHELLEY: Adonais. Buenos Aires, [Imprenta de Francisco A. Colombo], 1949-1959. [128]p.

        Hunter's Horn [Signed]

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1949. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing (modest rubbing to the spine ends and edges, and to the board edges and corners -- no dust jacket), SIGNED BY HARRIETT SIMPSON ARNOW on the title page and there inscribed by her as follows: "To / Lois McKenney / Harriette Simpson Arnow"; Arnow's critically-acclaimed her second book which the New York Times Book Review named as one of the ten best novels of the year and which the Saturday Review of Literature's critic's pole named as the Book of the Year. Set in the Kentucky hills, the novel chronicled the irreversible changes that roads and "progress" bring to rural communities. (Her intended title for the novel was "The End of the Gravel".) As Arnow stated: "First you have a path, and then a gravel road which takes the men and families away, and finally, when the strip mining has raped the landscape and the dammed rivers drowned the towns, comes the two-lane highway." A best-seller, many expected "Hunter's Horn" to win the 1949 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction ultimately won by James Gould Cozzens?'s "Guard of Honor". Bestowing high praise on Hunter's Horn, Joyce Carol Oates called it "our most unpretentious American masterpiece.?" Signed copies of the book are SCARCE. A Very Good copy of this major Twentieth-Century novel, SIGNED BY HARRIETTE SIMPSON ARNOW.

        The Final War

Portland, OR: Perri Press, 1949 Portland, OR: Perri Press, 1949. First Edition. 8 1/2" x 5 1/2", plain red staplebound wrappers. Unpaginated, but 10 single-page mimeographed chapters, I through X, are each faced by a tipped-in black-and-white illustration by a different illustrator. Foreword/acknowledgment and the unusual story itself by Keller. Sun shadow on front cover, else near fine with only minor toning to paper margins. A very scarce - and unusual - production of David H. Keller, M.D. (David Henry Keller), who primarily wrote, under this and a host of pseudonyms, for science fiction and fantasy/horror genre pulps. After the Portland [Oregon] Science Fantasy Society held an illustrating contest which yielded, as its winner, these ten very diverse pieces, Keller decided to write a short-short story tying them together, as a tribute. To do that in ten one-page chapters would be more than just a stretch, something Keller no doubt knew. The result - which incorporates ten different styles and ten different subjects for the illustrations, from a Poe-like candlelit haunting to a cubist "Dimension Dweller", a rather stunningly presaging Death Star, fetching females both human and not, decent impersonations of Frank Paul and Virgil Finlay, and even a slimy Lovecraftian Cthulhu (yes, Keller did work The Mythos into this brief effort, though the Big C unavoidably ends up on...Saturn; one of the illustrations is of the ringed planet) it's a story which is necessarily too breathless and fun-loving for character development. But then, it wasn't meant to be anything other than what it is. What it is, now, is a nice, and extraordinarily scarce, piece of science fiction history. L100
