The Art of Living [Inscribed Association Copy]

NY: Harper & Brothers. (1949). The second book by this artist who is perhaps most famous as a New Yorker cover artist and cartoonist: his "View of the World from 9th Avenue" became an iconic and satirical comment on New Yorkers' self-centered view of their place in the world. This book comprises about 300 Steinberg drawings, most published here for the first time. Between the publication of his first book and this one, Steinberg had been selected for the prestigious show "Fourteen Americans" at the Museum of Modern Art, along with such artists as Robert Motherwell, Ahile Gorky, I. Rice Pereira, and others, and is considered to have been the show that "proclaimed the arrival of Abstract Expressionism" in 1946. This copy is inscribed by Steinberg to Peter Matthiessen, "with affectionate greetings" and dated December 25, 1985. Another name in pencil on half title; sunning and staining to illustrated boards; a good copy, lacking the dust jacket but with the front and back jacket flaps laid in. A nice association copy between a notable artist and a notable writer. First Edition. Hardcover.

The cover page is printed on U.S. STEEL CORPORATION / THEATRE GUILD ON THE AIR stationery. The radio script is dated May 8, 1949. The cover / title page has the following mimeographed information: "OF MICE AND MEN", By John Steinbeck. Adapted by (sic) Radio By Robert Anderson. Sunday, May 8th, 1949. AS BROADCAST 5/8/49. The actors in this 1949 Radio Play included BURGESS MEREDITH, JUNE HAVOC, E.G. MARSHALL, and others. They are listed on the "Characters" page. The OF MICE AND MEN Radio Script is Accompanied by a two page TYPED CARBON AGREEMENT between THE THEATRE GUILD and JOHN STEINBECK. The Agreement is Dated March 15, 1949. In it, John Steinbeck grants permission for The Theatre Guild to adapt his Play, OF MICE AND MEN, for the Radio; and to Broadcast and Re-Broadcast the Radio Play Adaptation. The AGREEMENT is SIGNED in JOHN STEINBECK'S name by his SECRETARY (i.e. Signed Secretarially). Below Steinbeck's secretarially signed signature is typed: "JOHN STEINBECK / c/o ANNIE LAURIE WILLIAMS / 18 East 41 Street / New York City, N.Y." Annie Laurie Williams was the GREAT LITERARY AGENT who was Steinbeck's agent. The Agreement is also SIGNED by ARMINA MARSHALL (Actress and Theatrical Producer) for THE THEATRE GUILD. Condition: RADIO SCRIPT: The cover page has corner creases, wear and tearing around the staples (upper left corner) and light edge wear; the last page has pulled from the staples and has chipping and wear to its edges; a few of the first and last pages have some edge wear and corner creasing; all pages have some light toning; the first page has the pencil price ($6,500), code, and brief note of the previous owner, Peter Howard (see more about Peter Howard below); otherwise this very rare radio script is complete, bright, clean and unmarked. TWO PAGE LETTER: Both pages of the letter are worn, chipped, torn and creased at their edges, the top of the first page has a pencil code and price by the previous owner Peter Howard; otherwise all the typing and signatures remain bright and clear. Provenance of the late PETER HOWARD, ABAA, owner of the now gone SERENDIPITY BOOKS of Berkeley, California. Included is the manila folder that he used to hold the above documents. The folder has no real relation to the Radio Script and Typed Signed Agreement, but it is of interest in that Peter has written his notes on both the front and back sides of the folder, including that he entered (into his system) the documents on 10/3/91, and, on several places, his price of $6,500. The folder is in POOR condition, split in two parts, torn and chipped along the edges. The folder is included only in that it might be of general interest and because it provides provenance. You can read about ROBERT ANDERSON on Wikipedia. You can read about the Literary Agent ANNIE LAURIE WILLIAMS on various Internet sites. Good

[Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Huddie discovered that he was being credited as an important source in the development of jazz when music historians Charles Edward Smith and Frederick Ramsey, Jr. began inquiring into the roots of his music. In the early to mid 1940s, Ledbetter toured with several jazz and blues bands including combos headed by the likes of Bunk Johnson, Brownie McGhee and Art Hodes. Around June 1946, he recorded five songs in New York with George ""Pops"" Foster on bass (together with Willie ""The Lion"" Smith on piano, Sonny Terry on harmonica, and Brownie McGhee on guitar). During January and February 1949 he made several radio appearances on the WNYC Jazz Festival as well as a $75 gig at the Jazz Band Ball in February and in the same month he joined the musicians union (Charles K. Wolfe, Life and Legend of Leadbelly, 1992, pp. 232-244). Clifford Manz was serving the lecture and concert coordinator for the University of Minnesota when Ledbetter performed there in the fall of 1948. (Ibid, p. 253)."

Tibetan Painted Scrolls: An Artistic and Symbolic Illustration of 172 Tibetan Paintings Preceded by a Survey of the Historical, Artistic, Literary and Religious Development of Tibetan Culture. With An Article of P. Pelliot on a Mongol Edict, The Translation of Historical Documents and An Appendix On Prebuddhistic Ideas of Tibet.

Rome:: La Libreria Dello Stato ,, 1949. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. The important early set of three volumes by the Tibetologist Giuseppe Tucci. Number specimen 436 from an edition of 750. Volume 1, 328 pages with 89 figure illustrations; Volume 2, 329-727 pages, with figures 90-122 and 16 numbered tables. volume 3: Portfolio of plates, 25 polychrome color, numbered alphabetically, omitting "W" (as is standard in all sets) and 231 sepia monochrome, varying in size on 12.5 by 17 inch leaves. Giuseppe Tucci was Italy's foremost scholar of the East, living in India where he studied Buddhism and Tibet, and organizing several pioneering archaeological digs in the Swat Valley, Ghazni in Afghanistan, the Himalayas and Iran. The first volume of the set covers Tibetan history with an emphasis on gTsang and dBus and the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries. Volume two discusses the 195 tankas reproduced in the 231 plates of the portfolio volume. The third volume is a fold-out cloth portfolio containing the plates themselves. From Professor Lessing's review: "In summary, this work far surpasses anything written before in the wealth of material and in the beauty of reproductions. Furthermore, the author outdistances by far all his predecessors, both as a field worker and as a desk worker ... No future work on Tibetan iconography can be done which would ignore Tucci's research now accessible in convenient form. In brief, this is and will stand as a milestone in the field." Journal of the American Oriental Society, Vol. 74, No. 1 (Jan-Mar., 1954), pp. 40-51. This was issued in an numbered edition of 750. The 2 book volumes are 17 by 12 inches, and the third portfolio is 20 by 14 inches. The volumes are of red cloth with titles, the contents of all volumes are excellent, the covers of each have some fading and wear at the edges, though this would appear quite normal considering the age and use etc. Volume 1 binding has some fading to the spine, hinges are strong, minor surface wear to front. Volume 2 has minor surface wear to rear cover, front cover has a major surface abrasion, see photos, some fading to spine and small stain, hinges are strong. Volume 3 has some fading to the spine and front cover, small ink mark and some tearing to hinge, often seen in this volume, some light surface wear to front and rear.

        Ms. Brief mit eigenh. U.

Clarens, 22. Juni 1949. - 2/3 SS. Gr.-4to.

        Two Letters from Horton Foote

Washington DC 1949 - Two Autographed Letters Signed from two-time Academy Award-winning screenwriter and playwright Horton Foote. Both fine except for two holes along the margins of each letter (affecting a total of three words) where they were placed in a binder. The letters are dated August 31, 1949, and September 6, 1949, shortly before Foote's returned from Washington DC, where he ran an acting school with his wife and his friend, Vincent Donehue. The letters are addressed to "Arnold," likely L. Arnold Weisseberg, a theater lawyer with whom Foote had consulted in the past. In them he mentions the tough time had in running the school, his upcoming visit to New York, and his new play which he wants Weisseberg and actress Judith Evelyn to read. The unnamed play is *The Chase*, a smashing success that opened at The Playhouse Theater in 1952 with Jose Ferrer directing, and signaled Foote's return to Broadway. An interesting pair of letters from one of America's premiere stage and film writers who was then on the verge of success.

Mimeographed Manuscript, staple bound at the upper left corner, 8.5x11", pages printed on one side only, 63 numbered pages plus additional pages inserted here and there with lettered-numbers following a numbered page (i.e. 61, 61A, 61B, 61C, 61D, 62; 46, 46A, 46B, 46C, 46D, 46E, 47; etc.) plus a cover page, a "Characters" page, and 2 Introductory pages lettered A and B.

        The World Crisis

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1949. First edition, third printing. Hardcover. This is a collector grade copy of the first abridged and revised edition, third and final printing of Churchill's history of the First World War in the dust jacket unique to this printing. Churchill's history - which he titled "The World Crisis" - was originally published between 1923 and 1931. Of The World Crisis, Churchill bibliographer Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the front. He served as First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915. After the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his masterwork - originally published in six volumes between 1923 and 1931 - far exceeds this purpose. This important edition covering the war years 1911-1918 is not just an abridgement. It incorporates revisions by Churchill with new material, including a whole new chapter on the Battle of the Marne, as well as a new introduction. The U.S. edition preceded the British, making it the true first edition. There were three printings of the U.S. first abridged and revised edition - 1931, 1942, and 1949. All three are quite scarce in the original dust jackets. Here is the third printing, with a black dust jacket unique to this printing that prominently features a famous wartime photo of Churchill by Yousuf Karsh on the front face. A large book and quality production, it is 866 pages with fold-out maps and illustrations, bound in an attractive, vertically scored red cloth. This is a beautiful, near fine plus copy in a near fine dust jacket. The red cloth binding is square, tight, and immaculately clean with nicely rounded spine. The only exterior flaws noted are lightly bumped upper corners. The contents are notably bright with no spotting and no previous ownership marks. All fold-out maps and illustrations are present and pristine. We note only a trace of barely discernible soiling to the otherwise bright page edges. The black dust jacket of this edition proved particularly susceptible to wear and scuffing, perhaps owing to the thin paper of the dust jacket (which was printed black on white paper), and the size and weight of the book. This dust jacket is near fine with perhaps the best spine presentation weÂ’ve seen; the red spine lettering remains vividly bright with no trace of sunning and there is only minor wear to the spine ends and rear hinge. The dust jacket is unclipped, retaining the original front flap price. The illustrated front face shows only light scuffing with no loss. The sole trivial losses are a .5 inch chip to the upper edge of the rear face and a closed tear with some wrinkling and small chip losses to the rear flap fold. Withal, an exceptionally well-preserved example of a striking and notoriously fragile dust jacket. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival clear cover.

A Short Account of the Life and Work of Wynkyn de Worde, with a leaf from The Golden Legend printed by him at the sign of The Sun in Fleet Street, London, the Year 1527

San Francisco: Printed by the Grabhorn Press for the Book Club of California, 1949. Leaf book. One of 375 copies. Title in red, printed in red and black throughout in Rudolf Koch's Bibel Gotisch type on French handmade. Seven devices of Wynkyn de Worde reproduced in the text and with decorative initials by Zena Kavin. Folio, original brown cloth backed, decorated paper covered board, printed paper labels on spine and upper cover, in the original plain paper protective wrapper (chipped at extremities). The texts used here on Wynkyn de Worde and on the textual and printing history of the Golden Legend, were compiled from various sources by Robert Grabhorn and is a fascinating story despite the fact that "with Wynkyn de Worde his record forces us to the conclusion that his history was largely one of long and industrious labor, free from any drama other than that provided by his time". The original Wynkyn de Worde leaf in our copy is folio 53 and appears to be of the final words of the first part of the text the first two pages of the index. A very good copy with the booklabel of Clarence B. Hanson on the front pastedown.

1949. MUNARI, [Bruno]. [Libro illeggibile]. Small stampled pamphlet, 105 x 90 mm, comprised of off-white paper covers, the front cover with a hand torn hole, followed by 6 sheets of various coloured tissue paper (purple, green and yellow) each with a hand torn hole, and a silver paper star pasted down on the recto of the back cover, preserved in a new purple cloth folding box. Milan: Muggiani, n.d. ca. 1949. |~||~||~||~| An exceedingly rare ephemeral work by Bruno Munari. This small pamphlet is presented in the style of Munari's Libro illeggibile and was most likely created in a very small edition intended as a gift for friends. This copy comes by way of a friend and collaborator of Munari's who remembers receiving it around 1949. Some minor creasing, overall a fine survival of a fragile work.
