Modern Arms and Free Men: A Discussion of the Role of Science in Preserving Democracy ( Association Copy )

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1949. First Printing. Review Copy, publisher's Review card, with tissue guard, laid in. Very Good, lacking the jacket, spine a bit faded, "Withdrawn" stamp of the Stanford University Library over the inscription. An Association Copy, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR on front end page - "To Fred Terman, cordial regards Vannevar Bush". Vannevar Bush's long list of accomplishments include heading the U.S. Office of Scientific Research and Development (OSRD) during WWII, which included the start-up of the Manhattan Project, being the President of the Carnegie Institute, Chairman of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics ( precursor of NASA ), and founder of Raytheon Company. His 1945 Atlantic Monthly article "As We May Think", in which he described his "Memex" system for handling information is credited with originating the idea of hypertext and the World Wide Web. He also designed and built the differential analyzer, a machine for solving differential equations. At his death, Jerome Wiesner declared "No American has had greater influence in the growth of science and technology than Vannevar Bush". Frederick Terman ( 1900-1982 ) is widely credited, together with Willaim Shockley, as being the "Father of Silicon Valley", Terman earned his Doctor of Science at MIT, and his advisor there was Vannevar Bush. Terman later became Dean of the School of Engineering at Stanford, and then Provost. Terman's students at Stanford included William Hewlett and David Packard. In 1951 he led the creation of Stanford Industrial Park, bringing in companies such as Hewlett-Packard, Eastman Kodak, GE, and Lockheed. The Park later became known as Silicon Valley. The books in the Terman collection were left to the Engineering Library that bears his name by Dr. Terman upon his retirement, hence the "Withdrawn " stamp from Stanford Library. An utterly fascinating Association Copy, from "the Grand Old Man of American Science " to the "Father of Silicon Valley".. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR. First Edition. Cloth.         Portrait of Marshall

1949 - Portrait of Marshall, measuring 8 x 10 inches, circa 1949; framed. A presentation copy, inscribed in the wide margin: "To Ambassador Philip Jessup, with appreciation of his services and with warm regards, George C. Marshall." ---- The recipient, Philip C. Jessup, a judge on the International Court of Justice, was credited with playing a major role in ending the Soviet blockade of West Berlin. Jessup was a U. S. representative to the United Nations General Assembly, as well as a member of the International Court of Justice at The Hague. He also served as a U. S. ambassador at large from 1949 until his resignation in 1953. During that time, he was one of the closest advisers of then-Secretary of State Dean Acheson. After Jessup was maligned by Senator Joe McCarthy for purported communist "affinities," Secretary of Defense George C. Marshall rose to the diplomat's defense against McCarthy, who, in turn, demanded the General's dismissal from Truman's cabinet. Meanwhile, McCarthy's charges kept Jessup from being reappointed to the U.S. delegation to the United Nations in 1951 but President Harry S. Truman made him an alternate delegate the following year. An remarkable presentation photograph, linking one of the era's most influential diplomats with the iconic soldier and statesman Marshall. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Large folio (13 by 17-1/2 inches), original green cloth gilt, patterned endpapers. $5800.First edition, lavishly illustrated with 243 stunning large folio photographic plates of Egyptian building and architectural details, numerous in-text drawings, building plans and elevations, and two large fold “Maps of Cairo Showing Mohammedan Monuments” housed in a rear pocket in Volume I. “The finest piece of book production achieved in Egypt.”“Cairo possesses a most remarkable series of Muslim monuments, running unbroken from the ninth to the nineteenth century. In the latter respect it is unique; other cities, such as Damascus, possess a large number of monuments but some centuries are not represented at all.” “As one surveys the gorgeous monuments of Muslim Egypt one is struck by the grandeur, the beauty and the mysteries of mosques. They represent Art at its best and in its varied aspects. They record the eventful history of those momentous periods. They seem to hide within them secrets which had far-reaching effects on the political and social history of the country as well as on its intellectual and spiritual life throughout the centuries. Indeed the history of the Muslim World in general and Muslim Egypt in particular cannot be properly understood or rightly interpreted unless mosques are thoroughly studied as links in the chain of the past. It is therefore of great advantage to Egypt and to the world to unveil those secrets and reveal them; for mosques were not only places of worship, but also colleges for the study of religious doctrines, philosophical ideas and political theories.” With an introduction and preface dated 1954 laid into Volume I. With a gift inscription to French historian René Huyghe from Egyptian cultural minister Saroite Okasha.A fine copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Ohne Dat. u. U., \"Der blaue Kammerherr. Modern Arms and Free Men: A Discussion of the Role of Science in Preserving Democracy ( Association Copy )

Simon & Schuster, New York 1949 - First Printing. An utterly fascinating Association Copy, from "the Grand Old Man of American Science " to the "Father of Silicon Valley".
