Human Action: A Treatise on Economics

New Haven: Yale University Press, 1949. First edition, sixth printing of the author's magnum opus. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Kenniston P. Merrill New York, May 25, 1961 Ludwig Mises." In very good condition with some toning to the spine. Books inscribed by Von Mises are uncommon. Human Action is the single most important work by Von Mises and one of the most influential economic works of the twentieth century. "It should become the leading text of everyone who believes in freedom, in individualism, and in the ability of a free-market economy not only to outdistance any government-planned system in the production of goods and services for the masses, but to promote and safeguard . . . those intellectual, cultural, and moral values upon which all civilization ultimately rests" (Henry Hazlitt).

        Shane (First Edition)

Boston: Houghton, Mifflin, 1949. First Edition. First Edition. Guthrie, Jr.), in which a lone gunfighter comes to the aid of a small community. Though not nominated, Alan Ladd gave an Oscar-worthy performance.         Harry Truman's personally owned St. Christopher Medal Charm, presented to him on his 65th birthday — also the fourth anniversary of VE Day

n.p., May 8, 1949. 1" diameter. "A gold charm, 1"" diameter (9.7 dwts.) bearing an image of St. Christopher surrounded by the words: ''ST. CHRISTOPHER BE MY GUIDE."" on the obverse. The reverse bears an engraved inscription: ""H S T May 8, 1949"" A few minor abrasions and scuffs not detracting from the overall presentation. Truman spent his 65th birthday by attending services at the First Baptist Church in Washington. Also being Mother's Day, the communion table was festooned with flowers memorializing his mother, Mrs. Martha Truman, who died in 1947. May 8 also had additional significance for Truman. It was on that day in 1945, only a month after he had become President, that he announced the capitulation of German forces in Europe. From the Estate of Margaret Truman Daniel."

In the 1960s, she appeared in films; she had a role in Sidney Lumet's 1964 film, "The Pawnbroker."         Modern Arms and Free Men: A Discussion of the Role of Science in Preserving Democracy ( Association Copy )

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1949. First Printing. Review Copy, publisher's Review card, with tissue guard, laid in. Very Good, lacking the jacket, spine a bit faded, "Withdrawn" stamp of the Stanford University Library over the inscription. An Association Copy, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR on front end page - "To Fred Terman, cordial regards Vannevar Bush". Vannevar Bush's long list of accomplishments include heading the U.S. Office of Scientific Research and Development (OSRD) during WWII, which included the start-up of the Manhattan Project, being the President of the Carnegie Institute, Chairman of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics ( precursor of NASA ), and founder of Raytheon Company. His 1945 Atlantic Monthly article "As We May Think", in which he described his "Memex" system for handling information is credited with originating the idea of hypertext and the World Wide Web. He also designed and built the differential analyzer, a machine for solving differential equations. At his death, Jerome Wiesner declared "No American has had greater influence in the growth of science and technology than Vannevar Bush". Frederick Terman ( 1900-1982 ) is widely credited, together with Willaim Shockley, as being the "Father of Silicon Valley", Terman earned his Doctor of Science at MIT, and his advisor there was Vannevar Bush. Terman later became Dean of the School of Engineering at Stanford, and then Provost. Terman's students at Stanford included William Hewlett and David Packard. In 1951 he led the creation of Stanford Industrial Park, bringing in companies such as Hewlett-Packard, Eastman Kodak, GE, and Lockheed. The Park later became known as Silicon Valley. The books in the Terman collection were left to the Engineering Library that bears his name by Dr. Terman upon his retirement, hence the "Withdrawn " stamp from Stanford Library. An utterly fascinating Association Copy, from "the Grand Old Man of American Science " to the "Father of Silicon Valley".. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Review Copy.
