1949 - STETTNER, Louis. 10 Photographs". Introduction by Brassaï. Paris and New York: Two Cities Publications, (1949). Slim folio, six loose sheets and ten duotone plates in original heavy tan wrappers. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $4500.Limited first edition, number 30 of only 265 copies, of this revealing selection of ten Paris and New York street images by Brooklyn-born Louis Stettner"""consummate street photographer in the Cartier-Bresson tradition."Praised by Brassaï as a photographer who reveals the world "with utmost accuracy and the simplicity of great art" (Early Joys), Brooklyn-born Louis Stettner is "a consummate street photographer in the Cartier-Bresson, Atget and, well, Weegee tradition" (New York Times). This impressive group of ten Stettner duotones provides memorable views of empty Paris street corners juxtaposed with high-contrast portraits of individuals on the street. As a realist, Stettner "renounces his personality, his "˜I' with its little fads and immense pretensions. Henceforth he will live under the authority of reality and will dedicate his existence to the cult of its images." Text by Brassaï in French and English translation. Plates fine, original wrappers and loose sheets with expert repairs to folds. A near-fine copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

The Macmillan Company, New York 1949 - Tenth printing of Michener's first book, winner of the Pulitzer Prize. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author to the actor who created the role of Capt. George Brackett in the original Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway musical: "To Martin Wolfson,/In a character that does/not appear in this book, you/catch the precise & wonderful/spirit of what I was trying to/do. I have been deeply impressed/by your art & your sympathetic/understanding. It's been great/fun knowing you & watching your/performances./Your admirer, /James A. Michener." Michener's inscription takes up most of the front endpaper, but just above it is another inscription to Wolfson that we surmise is by the actor William Tabbert who played Lieutenant Joe Cable in the original production and who shared several scenes with Wolfson: "To Martin/In appreciation of his/splendid performance which/added much strength and/reality to the whole production/from his friend/Bill." SOUTH PACIFIC, the musical, won its own Pulitzer Prize, a New York Drama Critics Circle Award, and nine Tony Awards. Its memorable hits include "Some Enchanted Evening," "Bali Ha'I,"There is Nothing Like a Dame," "I'm in Love With a Wonderful Guy," and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out-a My Hair." It is rare to find copies of this book inscribed by Michener to original cast members of this historic American musical. Some light spotting to the cloth.         Autograph letter signed. With Viva Zapata Screenplay

1949 - (ZANUCK, Daryl) STEINBECK, John. Autograph letter signed. Pacific Grove, California: November 4, 1949. WITH: Viva Zapata! Screenplay. WITH: John Steinbeck and Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation". Legal Department. New York: Twentieth Century-Fox Film, 1949, 1951. Three items. Single original leaf (8-1/2 by 11 inches) of onionskin letterhead in manuscript on the recto. WITH: Quarto (8-1/2 by 11 inches), mimeograph manuscript in typescript on rectos only, original printed yellow wrappers, bound with brads as issued. WITH: Ten leaves of facsimile (8-1/2 by 11 inches) loose. Together housed in a custom folding chemise and slipcase. $8000.November 4, 1949 autograph letter signed by Steinbeck to film producer Daryl Zanuck, reporting Steinbeck's optimism at the progress of his original screenplay for the film Viva Zapata!, Steinbeck's letter in this rare collection with a May 16, 1951 original final shooting screenplay for the film, which premiered in 1952 starring Marlon Brando and directed by Elia Kazan, with Steinbeck's Oscar-nominated script hailed as a "towering achievement". unquestionably his finest work in the genre," housed together with ten loose leaves of facsimile documenting Steinbeck's legal contracts on the film with Twentieth Century-Fox Film, in a handsome custom folding chemise and half morocco slipcase."Steinbeck's towering achievement in film is most embodied by Viva Zapata!, a film Robert Morseberger regards as 'unquestionably his finest work in the genre". When Viva Zapata! finally appeared on the screen in 1952, it was the culmination not only of 20 years of study, but also Steinbeck's apprenticeship in writing for Hollywood".Unlike F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Faulkner or Ernest Hemingway". Steinbeck had great successes on the big screen". Over the course of his career, Steinbeck was three times nominated for the screenwriting Academy Award, while his films, more generally, garnered 25 Academy Award nominations, ultimately winning four". On the film's release, with Marlon Brando in the lead, Viva Zapata! electrified audiences. It earned Steinbeck an Academy Award nomination for best story and screenplay; Marlon Brando earned an Oscar nomination for best actor, while Anthony Quinn actually won the Oscar for best supporting actor. Indeed, Morseberger ranks Viva Zapata! as one of the four 'most memorable films". placing it in the elite company of High Noon, Singin' in the Rain, and The Quiet Man" (Price, "Champion of the Common Man," in Bloom, John Steinbeck, 47-48). The very scarce autograph letter in this collection, entirely in Steinbeck's hand, is dated three years before the film's 1952 premiere and many years after he began work on the screenplay. The letter""included with the "shooting final" screenplay of Viva Zapata! in the original wrappers of Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation""captures his near elation at this turning point in the project that consumed so many years of his life. Steinbeck, who "had been reading about Emiliano Zapata since the early 1930s," here writes Fox producer Daryl Zanuck with evident relief about his screenplay (Railsback and Meyer, 411). The letter is on a single leaf of onionskin personal letterhead with his Pacific Grove address: "John Steinbeck, 147 Eleventh Street, Pacific Grove, California." It reads: "November 4, 49, Dear Daryl: It was a brilliant thing to send me Jules Buck. He is a hell of a man. We work well together, are going very fast and I think a good script is coming out of it. I am extremely pleased. Just a note, John Steinbeck." Together with Steinbeck's letter and the screenplay are ten loose facsimile leaves, the file copies of legal agreements between Steinbeck and Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation, including a four-page, "Modification Agreement" dated "November 23, 1949" and a six-page "Assignment," with the date of "February 5, 1951."         Farewell to Arms (Latvian)

1949 - HEMINGWAY, Ernest. Ardievas Ierociem (Farewell to Arms). (Örebro, Sweden): Parnass, (1949). Octavo, original paper wrappers, uncut and unopened. $3500.First Latvian edition of A Farewell to Arms, Hemingway's own copy, warmly and humorously inscribed on the half title, "For Fraser Bragg Drew, from his friend Ernest Hemingway (Read this for home-work) EH."Hemingway inscribed this volume to his friend Professor Fraser Drew. As a young teacher, Drew wrote a letter to which Hemingway responded with uncharacteristic kindness, signing six of Drew's books and presenting him with six more "as an act of contrition" for taking so long to return the books. Hemingway then invited Drew to visit, and on April 8, 1955, one year after Hemingway won the Nobel Prize, they spent a long afternoon discussing literature, later recounted by Drew in his article "Unedited Notes on a Visit to Finca Vigia" (in Bruccoli, Conversations With Ernest Hemingway, 89-98). At the end of Drew's visit Hemingway said "Let's go up to the house and sign those books of yours." Hemingway inscribed all the books Drew had brought with him and presented him with many others from his own collection, many of which were foreign translations; this volume is undoubtedly from that visit. A Farewell to Arms first published in 1929; this first Latvian edition was translated by Dzintars Sodums. Grissom, 714. Bookplate of Fraser Drew.Interior fine, only light wear to paper wrappers. A near-fine volume with a wonderful Hemingway inscription. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Typed letter signed

1949 - WEIZMANN, Chaim. Typed letter signed. [Jerusalem]: March 19, 1949. Original letter, one leaf of presidential stationary, measuring 6-1/2 by 9 inches, typewritten on recto. $9000.Extraordinary letter typewritten in Hebrew and signed by Israel's first president, Chaim Weizmann. Written and signed in Hebrew. The letter, written in Hebrew on the official stationery of the president of Israel, reads: "State of Israel. Office of the President. 18 Adar 5709. March 19, 1949. Dr. Chaim Weizmann. [To] Member of Knesset Dr. Zerah Wahrhaftig. Tel Aviv. Dear Member of Knesset. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your best wishes. The Zionist Organization and the People of Israel have blessed me with a high and lofty position and a great honor. This honor, though, is a weighty one at my age and in view of the state of my health. I pray in my heart that I may be worthy of the position, and that history will keep me from any quarrels and internal strife, which, most unfortunately, are frequent in postwar countries. With great appreciation, [signed] Chaim Weizmann. President of Israel. Copy: Secretariat of the Knesset."Chaim Weizmann's importance in bringing about the establishment of the state of Israel cannot be overestimated. He was one of Israel's most important statesmen, having used his skills in diplomacy to convince British Prime Minister Balfour of the importance of Palestine as a Jewish homeland, which resulted in the Balfour Declaration. "The Declaration, which was Weizmann's primary achievement, was a turning point in modern Jewish history. The idea of restoring Jewish political nationhood had passed from fantasy into the world of politics. A leading diplomatic historian has described Weizmann's role as "˜the greatest act of diplomatic statesmanship of the First World War". The spectacular nature of his achievement had made him the central figure in the public life of the Jewish people; he was recognized as such by Jews and non-Jews alike. His position in international life even conveyed a premonition of Jewish sovereignty. Heads of state, ministers, and high officials, behaved toward him as though he were already president of a sovereign nation equal in status to their own. He and they knew that this was not strictly true; but something in his presence and in their own historic imagination forbade them to break the spell." In addition, "President Truman, in direct response to Weizmann's letter, had authorized the recognition of Israel by the United States," immediately after it had declared its independence on May 14, 1948, ensuring that many others in the United Nations would do so. Due to these, and numerous other diplomatic achievements on behalf of Israel, "in February 1949, the first elected parliament of Israel, meeting specially in Jerusalem, elevated Weizmann from the presidency of the Provisional State Council to the title of president of the State of Israel." (Encyclopedia Judaica). Weizmann official assumed office on February 17, 1949. This letter, composed scarcely one month later, was printed so soon after the founding of the state of Israel that the official stationery lacks the familiar official emblem of the state of Israel (a menorah and olive branches) that would adorn all later stationery. Unfortunately, the concerns about his health that Weizmann voices in this letter would prove to be well-founded; he passed away in 1952, before the completion of his term of office. Weizmann wrote this letter to one of the Knesset's most distinguished statesmen and intellectuals. Legal and religious scholar Rabbi Dr. Zerah Wahrhaftig emigrated to Israel in 1947, and very quickly became a political leader. He was one of the original signers of the Israeli Declaration of Independence, served in the Knesset from the founding of the State of Israel until 1981, served as Minister of Religions in the Prime Minister's cabinet, led the National Religious Party, was a lecturer at Hebrew University, and helped to found Bar Il [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Faint mark to fore edge; an excellent copy in the jacket with some loss to head of spine, short closed tear to centre of spine panel, nick and short closed tear to foot of spine. First US edition, first printing. Inscribed by the author on the half-title, "Paul Bowles. Tangier, April 1985." American-born Bowles moved to Tangier in 1947, where he lived until his death in 1999. Tangier was the setting of this, his first novel, a key title in the development of Beat literature. It was first published in September 1949 in the UK, after Doubleday rejected the manuscript; the first US edition followed a month later. Norman Mailer commented that with this title, Bowles "opened the world of Hip. He let in the murder, the drugs, the incest, the death of the Square ... the call of the orgy, the end of civilization". Uncommon inscribed, with just two copies appearing at auction.

Houghton Mifflin 1949 - 8vo. A highlight of Western literature and the source for the 1953 movie classic of the same name, but in a hitherto unknown proof jacket that depicts the Shane character standing in a saloon, his back to Wilson, the hired gun, who is ready to draw on him. Shane's hands hang loosely within easy reach of his gun holsters. The published jacket shows only Shane's head and comprises the entire front panel. The Houghton Mifflin archive at Harvard conclusively documents which of the two jackets precedes. A July 11, 1949, letter to Schaefer from the editorial department states: "I managed to get hold of a rough proof of the jacket and have been warned by the art department that this jacket is being remade and possibly the head will be bigger." A subsequent letter to the author, dated August 18, 1949, conveys a proof copy of the published jacket which Schaefer, in a letter dated August 23, 1949, commends: "Thanks for the proof of the new jacket for Shane . an improvement over the first one." [The cataloguer respectfully disagrees with this opinion]. Rare. Fine in a fine example of the wraparound dust jacket (lightly sunned at the spine) and housed in a custom-made leather clamshell box. First edition of the author's first book. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

New York: Harcourt Brace, (1949). First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine, lacking the dustwrapper. INSCRIBED by the author for William Archibald "with best wishes" and SIGNED by her "at Upper Grand View on May 26, 1956." Archibald, from Trinidad, wrote the book and lyrics for two musicals: CARIB SONG in 1945 and THE CRYSTAL HEART in 1960. The latter starred Mildred Dunnock and earned some praise from the critics including this comment by Harold Hobson of the 1957 London production: "I would rather have written this failure than successes like THE KING AND I and SOUTH PACIFIC." More to the point, Welty in the early 1950s corresponded with Archibald in the hopes that he would create a musical from her novel THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM, a project that never materialized. Laid into the book is a Christmas card from Welty to Archibald showing a Santa on the deck of a ferry named "Miss Noel." Inside the card Welty has written: "Variety tells me you went to Europe for beginning CRYSTAL HEART, so who knows when the Miss Noel will catch up with you. This is to say hello, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and fabulous success with the London opening [it closed after only four performances]. I'll be reading about it in the papers. All the best for 1957 from Eudora." Welty has also added a one-line note to Bean, Baldwin Bergersen, Archibald's companion and musical collaborator. Archibald's loose bookplate laid in with the adhesive stain from it on the front pastedown.

Jour de fete (Original French Film Program)

Cady Films, Paris 1949 - Original French program for the 1949 Jacques Tati film, "Jour de Fete," the director's first feature-length movie, about a day in the life of a rural French postman, illustrated throughout in color by Rene Peron. Rather than being a typical program with biographies, photographs, film stills, and essays, Tati's approach is to introduce the film's cast and crew details, then tell its story along with illustrations, in the manner of a children's book. "Jour de fete" was shot in both Thomson-Color and black-and-white, and due to processing difficulties with the former, only the black-and-white version was seen for decades, until 1995 when the color version was restored. Fascinatingly, this rare program clearly illustrates the vivid color that Tati intended audiences in France and Europe to see--though no one did. Tall card wrappers in full color, saddle-stitched, with full-color illustrations throughout and photomontages from the film printed on the wrapper verso. 12 x 8 inches. About Near Fine. A unique piece from one of the most important French films of the twentieth century.BFI 603, Criterion 730. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
