Le Deuxième Sexe (The Second Sex).

Gallimard, Paris 1949 - Volume 1: 1 blank leaf + half title with a list of her works on the verso + TP + Dedication page + half title + [11]-395 + [397] = half title + [399] = Index + [400] = Printing Information; Volume 2: 1 blank leaf + half title with a list of her works on the verso + TP + Quote page + Introduction page + Half title + [13]-577 + [579] = half title + [581] = Index + [583] = Printing Information, Octavo. First Edition. One of 2,000 numbered copies (from an edition of 2,150) on alfama Marais paper - Volume 1 is numbered 624 and Volume 2 is numbered 482. Beauvoir's landmark work on feminism appeared at a crucial turning point immediately following the Second World War, wherein she offered a profound and scathing analysis of patriarchal society and what it means to be a woman in Western society. One of her most important pieces of writing, The Second Sex, was translated into more than a dozen languages and played a pivotal role in the transition from the 'old feminism' of the woman suffrage movements and the 'new feminism' (the so-called "second wave") that has dominated gender politics ever since - setting the agenda for women's rights throughout the nineteen fifties and well beyond. " if nevertheless we admit, provisionally, that women do exist, then we must face the question "what is a woman"? To state the question is, to me, to suggest, at once, a preliminary answer. The fact that I ask it is in itself significant. A man would never set out to write a book on the peculiar situation of the human male. But if I wish to define myself, I must first of all say: 'I am a woman'; on this truth must be based all further discussion. A man never begins by presenting himself as an individual of a certain sex; it goes without saying that he is a man In actuality the relation of the two sexes is not quite like that of two electrical poles, for man represents both the positive and the neutral, as is indicated by the common use of man to designate human beings in general; whereas woman represents only the negative, defined by limiting criteria, without reciprocity. In the midst of an abstract discussion it is vexing to hear a man say: 'You think thus and so because you are a woman'; but I know that my only defense is to reply: 'I think thus and so because it is true,' thereby removing my subjective self from the argument. It would be out of the question to reply: 'And you think the contrary because you are a man', for it is understood that the fact of being a man is no peculiarity. A man is in the right in being a man; it is the woman who is in the wrong. It amounts to this: just as for the ancients there was an absolute vertical with reference to which the oblique was defined, so there is an absolute human type, the masculine. Woman has ovaries, a uterus: these peculiarities imprison her in her subjectivity, circumscribe her within the limits of her own nature. It is often said that she thinks with her glands. Man superbly ignores the fact that his anatomy also includes glands, such as the testicles, and that they secrete hormones. He thinks of his body as a direct and normal connection with the world, which he believes he apprehends objectively, whereas he regards the body of woman as a hindrance, a prison, weighed down by everything peculiar to it Thus humanity is male and man defines woman not in herself but as relative to him; she is not regarded as an autonomous being." the publisher's original cloth with the colorful, modern design supplied by Mario Prassinos. There is some minor wear to exterior and very light discolorations to the lover front edge of Volume 1 and to the lower edge of the spine of Volume 2. The title page of Volume 1 and the Dedication page that follows have a very light water stain (2" wide) in the upper left corner. Otherwise, this is a lovely copy of an extremely important and influential work in the history of ideas in the late 20th century. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Aria for Strings received its first American performance at the West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church by the Hausman Quartet on November 19, 2007; the performance was recorded and released on an album entitled "Chambers and Concertos" in 2009, the score published in 2010 by Halim El-Dabh Music LLC.An Egyptian-born American composer, performer, ethnomusicologist, and educator, El-Dabh came to the United States in 1950, becoming a part of the New York music scene that included Cage, Varèse, and Hovhaness. He went on to study composition with Krenek, Copland, Dallapiccola, and others. "El-Dabh's compositional style is influenced by Egyptian folk and traditional music. Frequently monodic, his works feature complex rhythms and much use of percussion. His career was launched in 1949 with a highly acclaimed performance of It is Dark and Damp on the Front (1948) at All Saints Cathedral, Cairo. In 1950 he made his début as a solo drummer, under the direction of Stokowski, in the first performance of Tahmeela. Other works include Clytemnestra (1958), One More Gaudy Night (1961), A Look at Lightning (1962) and Lucifer (1975), commissioned by Martha Graham; Sound and Light of the Pyramids of Giza (1960), written for the Cultural Ministry of the Egyptian Government and performed daily at the pyramids; and New Pharaoh's Suite, written for the Cleveland Museum of Art to accompany a visiting Ethiopian exhibit from the Louvre (1996). Spectrum no.1 ?Symphonies in Sonic Vibration' (1955) and Leiyla and the Poet (1959) have been recorded." Denise A Seachrist in Grove Music Online. An early pioneer of electronic music, El-Dabh composed one of the earliest known works of tape music, or "musique concrète," in 1944, The Expression of Zaar. He also scored four ballets for Martha Graham: Clytemnestra (1958), One More Gaudy Night (1961), A Look at Lightning (1962), and Lucifer (1975)."El-Dabh is probably the best known composer of Arabic descent and his works are highly regarded in Egypt, where he is considered the foremost living composer among that nations's 'second generation' of contemporary composers." In Europe, Martin Rauch is regarded as one of the pioneers of modern technical and creative applications for traditional rammed earth construction. His work encompasses residential, hotel, ecclesiastical and industrial buildings, interior design and landscape design in Germany, Britain, Italy, Austria and Switzerland, including projects with Herzog & de Meuron and Schneider + Schumacher. His "Church of Reconciliation" in Berlin was the first load-bearing structure to be built with rammed earth in Germany in the last ninety years. Together with local architects Rauch constructed experimental family homes in Vorarlberg, Austria, and with Kienast Vogt & Partner, he designed a series of garden and park projects. This volume is the definitive introduction to contemporary building with rammed earth. Otto Kapfinger, geboren 1949 in St. Pölten, freischaffender Architekturwissenschaftler und -publizist.         First Day Cover Honoring Edgar Allan Poe; Signed By Agatha Christie, Rex Stout, Leslie Charteris and Others

      - Edgar Allan Poe: First Day of Cover Signed By Agatha Christie, Rex Stout, Leslie Charteris, Evan Hunter, and Others. 1949. Issued on the 100th Anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe's Death, signed in the early 1970's by Agatha Christie, Rex Stout, Leslie Charteris, Evan Hunter (with his pen name "Ed McBain" in brackets), Richard Lockeridge, and George Harmon Coxe. It is likely that they would have been signed at the Mystery Writes of America in the early 1970's since Rex Stout died in 1975. The signature of Agatha Christie appears to be a little shakier which is typical of her writing in the same period. This first day cover that was issued on October 7, 1949. We have seen most of the same writers sign a later first day issue in 1974 so it is possible they were signed at the same event.

President Truman signs a Dwight D. Eisenhower, American Red Cross Citation for distinguished service

[Washington, DC], 1949. 14" x 11". "Large American Red Cross Citation awarded to Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1949 and signed by ""Harry Truman"", as President of The United States. 14"" x 11"" on card stock. Fine condition. An attractive, rare, and large American Red Cross Citation awarded to Dwight D. Eisenhower, dated 1949 (several years before his presidential term) in ""Grateful Recognition of Distinguished Humanitarian Service During the 1949 Fund Campaign"". Signed by President Harry Truman. Although the citation does not go into more detail, one can presume it may have likely revolved around Eisenhower's contribution with his involvement in numerous pre and post war efforts. The Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center (EAMC) is a 93-bed medical treatment facility started as Camp Gordon Station Hospital in 1941, located near Augusta, Georgia which was set up to care for World War II casualties and dependents. Although closed in 1946, it reopened as Camp Gordon and became the more permanent Fort Gordon during the Cold War. In addition Eisenhower championed the rebuilding and aid to Western Europe, the POW's and to ""European Recovery Program"", an American initiative to aid Western Europe to rebuild their economies and help the civilians after the end of World War II. The plan was in operation for four years beginning April 8, 1948, with the intent to assist in rebuilding war devastated regions. A unique award, in crisp, clean condition which would present well framed."

        Nineteen Eighty-Four A Novel

London: Secker & Warburg,, 1949. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in red, top edge red. With the red dust jacket. An excellent, bright copy in the jacket with some nicks and rubbing to spine ends, spine panel slightly faded, though less so than usually encountered, short closed tear to head of front spine fold, some minor nicks and creasing to extremities. First edition, first impression. Copies of the first impression were issued either in green or dark red dust jackets. To judge from surviving examples, this was done in proportions of about two green to one red. The red jackets are far more susceptible to fading, and as a consequence, surviving copies in nice condition are uncommon.

Neue Motive Jugendstil Art noveau Textildruck Passau Brünn

Little information seems to be known or is available, concerning the German designer Alois Bohla. That he produced a number of textile designs that were put into production is known. He also produced a range of instructional drawings based on Art Nouveau floral motifs. These are now somewhat rare and not readily available online. However, a web link is given in the Reference links section below, where some of the colour work produced by Bohla can be both seen and purchased. The four textile patterns shown in this article were meant to be produced as tablecloth designs. The first two were published in 1905, while the latter two are slightly later and were published in 1911. All four designs were purchased by the Austrian textile manufacturers Norbert Langer und Sohne for eventual release as tablecloth covers. Interestingly, the first two from 1905 were part of a competition organised by Norbert Langer und Sohne, the winners of which were published in the German magazine Deutsche Kunst und Dekoration. Prof. Alois Bohla, Jugendstilmappe um 1910 "Neue Motive für moderne Flächenverzierung - Studien nach der Natur mit daraus gewonnenen Motiven und Musterungen und Andeutungen geschmackvoller Farbenwahl - Moderne Anregungen für Schulen und verschiedene Arten gewerblicher Verwendung - Herausgegeben von Professor Al.
