THE GOLDEN APPLES along with an AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED (ANS)

New York: Harcourt Brace, (1949). First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine, lacking the dustwrapper. INSCRIBED by the author for William Archibald "with best wishes" and SIGNED by her "at Upper Grand View on May 26, 1956." Archibald, from Trinidad, wrote the book and lyrics for two musicals: CARIB SONG in 1945 and THE CRYSTAL HEART in 1960. The latter starred Mildred Dunnock and earned some praise from the critics including this comment by Harold Hobson of the 1957 London production: "I would rather have written this failure than successes like THE KING AND I and SOUTH PACIFIC." More to the point, Welty in the early 1950s corresponded with Archibald in the hopes that he would create a musical from her novel THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM, a project that never materialized. Laid into the book is a Christmas card from Welty to Archibald showing a Santa on the deck of a ferry named "Miss Noel." Inside the card Welty has written: "Variety tells me you went to Europe for beginning CRYSTAL HEART, so who knows when the Miss Noel will catch up with you. This is to say hello, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and fabulous success with the London opening [it closed after only four performances]. I'll be reading about it in the papers. All the best for 1957 from Eudora." Welty has also added a one-line note to Bean, Baldwin Bergersen, Archibald's companion and musical collaborator. Archibald's loose bookplate laid in with the adhesive stain from it on the front pastedown.

Jour de fete (Original French Film Program)

Cady Films, Paris 1949 - Original French program for the 1949 Jacques Tati film, "Jour de Fete," the director's first feature-length movie, about a day in the life of a rural French postman, illustrated throughout in color by Rene Peron. Rather than being a typical program with biographies, photographs, film stills, and essays, Tati's approach is to introduce the film's cast and crew details, then tell its story along with illustrations, in the manner of a children's book. "Jour de fete" was shot in both Thomson-Color and black-and-white, and due to processing difficulties with the former, only the black-and-white version was seen for decades, until 1995 when the color version was restored. Fascinatingly, this rare program clearly illustrates the vivid color that Tati intended audiences in France and Europe to see--though no one did. Tall card wrappers in full color, saddle-stitched, with full-color illustrations throughout and photomontages from the film printed on the wrapper verso. 12 x 8 inches. About Near Fine. A unique piece from one of the most important French films of the twentieth century.BFI 603, Criterion 730. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Alemandi).

PICASSO: 32 PEINTURES RECENTES (CHOISIS PARMI CELLES EXPOSEES A LA MAISON DE LA PENSEE FRANCAISE ET EXTRAITES DU NUMERO EN PREPERATION DE LA REVUE CAHIERS D'ART)

Cahiers D'Art, Paris 1949 - 44pp, 32 b&w illustrations. Text in French. In a protective clear acetate dustwraper. Published in 1949, this monographic Cahiers D'Art publication presents full page illustrations of thirty-two paintings from a total of sixty-five exhibited works executed by Pablo Picasso between 1946 and 1949. Held at Paris' Maison de la Pensee Francaise between July and December, the show was the most comprehensive presentation to date of the artist's post-war output. An internally bright, handsome example of this exceedingly uncommon document - only seven copies are currently cited in OCLC WorldCat - showing some mild wear, soiling, and staining to its cream colored covers along with some separation of the dustwrapper along the bottom edge with the vintage supplemental complete exhibition checklist laid in. It has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         The Twelve Ravens: A Lithuanian Fairy Tale [SIGNED]

München: T. J. Vizgirda, 1949. First edition. Hardcover. poor to g. Signed and dated on colophon. 528/560. 4to. 28pp. Original illustrated dustjacket over tan paper-covered boards with brown lettering on cover. Artist book illustrated with nine original woodcuts by Vaclovas Ratas, initials in plates, hand-set letterpress text. Translation revised by Mark J. Kinney and text edited by Paulius Jurkus. Volume XXVII of "Lithuania - Country and Nation." The woodcuts are similar to the German Expressionist style using stiff angular images and aggressive sharp broken lines.Dustjacket with major wear, bottom third of back part of dj and most of dj spine missing, flaps separated and various medium chips along edges. Binding with one-inch chip at head, and three-inch chip at tail of spine missing. Some sunning along edges of boards. Browning to pages of block not affecting text or images. Dj in poor, book in good condition. Though in poor condition, very rare with dj. Vaclovas Ratas' (1910-1973) work is known for his basic approach of simplicity, sincerity and his love for decorative values. His work is not true to one particular style but executed in varying styles and techniques. He was a founding member of FORMA in 1931, a group of seven Lithuanian artists and his work was exhibited internationally. In 1937 he was awarded the Prix d'Honeur for his woodcut illustrations in "Jurate and Kastytis," a ballad of the Lithuanian Poet Maironis. During his exile in Germany from 1945-1949 Ratas started his own art school and in 1949 created the nine woodcuts for "The Twelve Ravens." In the same year Ratas emigrated to Perth, Australia. "The speed with which the émigré artist embraced Aboriginal art is astounding. Vaclovas Ratas who landed in Perth in 1949 produced woodcuts that incorporated Aboriginal motifs by the end of that year." (Roger Butler). Ratas eventually settled in Sydney which was dominated by abstract art. He joined the Lithuanian artist group Aitvaras (The Goblin). Ratas Australian period is considered the least productive one though his style became more colorful and joyful.

The sisters, Charlotte (1816-1855), Emily (1818-1848), and Anne (1820-1849), are well known as poets and novelists. Like many contemporary female writers, they originally published their poems and novels under male pseudonyms: Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. Their stories immediately attracted attention, although not always the best, for their passion and originality. Charlotte's Jane Eyre was the first to know success, while Emily's Wuthering Heights, Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and other works were later to be accepted as masterpieces of literature. .
