        EVERY IDLE DREAM

Collins, London 1948 - With Illustrations by Elinor Darwin. London: Collins, 1948. First edition. The grandson of British naturalist Charles Darwin, Bernard Darwin (1876-1961) was an accomplished amateur golfer who covered the sport for The Times from 1907 to 1953 and for Country Life from 1907 to 1961, becoming the first writer ever to cover golf on a daily basis, rather than as an occasional feature. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2005. In the twenty-nine essays in this collection, Darwin elaborates on such varied topics as his boyhood attachment to tin soldiers, his "fundamentalist's" faith in Sherlockiana, his affection for small railroad junctions situated thrillingly close to some favorite golf links, the "restful excitement" of watching a cricket match, and the pleasures of a day spent in bed. Signed by Darwin on the title page. Octavo. Original gray cloth binding, with gilt titles. The spine is touch sun faded. Some light edgewear to the dust jacket, with a bit of mild foxing to the rear panel and flap; otherwise very good. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        L'APOCALYPSE DE SAINT JEAN APÔTRE

Paris: [Printed by Robert Blanchet for Paul Féraud], 1948. No. 12 OF 160 COPIES and ONE OF 10 COPIES with an additional suite of plates PRINTED ON VELLUM. This deluxe illlustrated edition of the Book of Revelations is enhanced by a stately binding by an important French firm and by an additional suite of the evocative etchings, printed on creamy vellum. The text here includes the three Epistles of Saint John, in addition to the Apocalypse, translated by Le Maistre de Sacy (1613-84), who was a member of the Jansenists, a French Roman Catholic sect named for and adhering to the doctrines of Cornelius Jansen, Bishop of Ypres; the group was strongly opposed to the teachings of the Jesuits and was supported by such literary luminaries as Pascal and Racine. A major theologian, de Sacy spent two years in the Bastille for his heterodoxy. The binding's fanfare style of decoration was popular in France during de Sacy's lifetime. The main features of this style, in Glaister's words, "are interlacing ribbons" that form "compartments of various shapes, with emphasis given to a central compartment. This interlacing ribbon is bounded by a double line on one side and a single one on the other." Ornaments made with small hand tools "fill all the compartments except the central one and almost completely cover the sides." The fanfare style is perhaps most frequently associated with the work of Nicolas and Clovis Eve, court binders and booksellers to successive kings of France from about 1578 to 1634. It is generally believed that the term "fanfare" actually took its name from an early 17th century music book (the title of which begins with the word "fanfare") acquired by the bibliophile Charles Nodier in 1829. The book was bound for Nodier by the famous Parisian binder Joseph Thouvenin, using an appropriately retrospective design in imitation of the Eves' style, which from that point forward came to be known as "fanfare." This retrospective binding was executed by one of the greatest French bookbinding families. In her "Bookbinders and their Craft," Prideaux says that the Gruel firm, founded in 1811, "always had the highest reputation . . . for initiative in artistic matters, as well as for irreproachable execution in the detail of its many-sided achievements." Paul Gruel (1864-1954) took over the firm after the death of his father, the great Léon Gruel, in 1923 and ably directed the operation until his own death, maintaining the atelier's reputation for excellence. The moving illustrations are the work of Jean Bernard (1908-94), a prolific book illustrator and a leader in the French artisans' association, Les Compagnons du Devoir. The etchings show to especially fine effect on vellum.. 340 x 263 mm. (13 1/4 x 10 1/2"). 2 p.l., 128 pp., [5] leaves. Translated into French by Maître de Sacy. No. 12 OF 160 COPIES and ONE OF 10 COPIES with an additional suite of plates PRINTED ON VELLUM. IMPRESSIVE SMOOTH CALF, CONSPICUOUSLY GILT IN A FANFARE STYLE, BY GRUEL (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with interlacing strapwork and many curling gilt vines, raised bands, spine gilt with twining vine enclosed by double gilt rules, gilt titling, turn-ins ruled and tooled in gilt, dark brown watered silk endleaves, all edges gilt. Original pictorial paper wrappers bound in. Housed in an attractive morocco-backed, suede-lined cloth clamshell box. With 65 small etchings in the text (including historiated initials), an illustrated table of plates, and 30 full-page etchings by Jean Bernard; with an additional suite of the plates printed on vellum, numbered (10/10) and signed by the artist. Vellum lightly rumpled and with occasional (naturally occurring) variations in grain, but A SPARKLING COPY inside and out. The etchings show to especially fine effect on vellum.

[Kinsey Reports] Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, [together with] Sexual Behavior in the Human Female

Philadelphia: W. B. Saunders [through 1953], 1948. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine-/Near Fine+. First Printings of this two-volume landmark work on human sexuality. Thick, tall 8vo: xv[1],804; xxx,841[1]pp. Publisher's maroon cloth, covers blocked in black and navy blue, spines stamped in gilt, typographic dust jackets in orange (male) and yellow (female) printed in black. Human Male: spine ends gently bumped, else Fine; jacket slightly dusty, shade of lightening to spine panel (but less than usual), two small chips at crown (not affecting lettering or design), unnecessary clear tape mends to verso, price obliterated by sticker removal, better than Very Good. Human Female: lower spine very lightly scuffed, small white spot at crown, about Fine; jacket, priced $8.00 to back flap, with light wear to folds and extremities, several small closed tears and creases, spine panel bright and unfaded, Near Fine or better. Garrison-Morton 7037-38. Kinsey and his colleagues at the Institute for Sex Research at Indiana University based the first volume on histories of approximately 5,300 males, collected during a fifteen year period. The text describes the methodology, sampling, coding, interviewing, and statistical analyses. Sexual Behavior in the Human Female was based on personal interviews with approximately 6,000 women. The data was analyzed for the frequency with which women participate in various types of sexual activity and considered how such factors as age, social-economic status, and religious adherence influenced sexual behavior. The evidence suggested that women were less sexually active than men, but the publications were immediately controversial, causing shock and outrage, both because they challenged conventional beliefs about sexuality and because they discussed subjects considered taboo. The Kinsey Reports together sold three-quarters of a million copies and were translated into thirteen languages, making them among the most successful and influential scientific books of the 20th century. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.
