ROBBINS, Lionel.) ALLAIS, Maurice.
Paris: Imprimerie Nationale, 1947. Paris: Imprimerie Nationale,, 1947. Presentation copy to Lionel Robbins 2 volumes, octavo (231 x 152 mm). Late 20th-century green cloth, red morocco label, original wrappers bound in. Binding in fine condition, restoration at wrapper extremities, First edition, presentation copy to the British economist Lionel Robbins, inscribed by the author on the title page of volume I: "A monsieur le professeur Robbins en bien candid Hommage M Allais". An excellent economics provenance: Robbins, along with Keynes, was the leading British economist during the inter-war period; at the London School of Economics, he "dominated the economics department for thirty years and built it up to its pre-eminent position in British economics" (ODNB). Économie et Intérêt was Allais's second major publication, a massive work on capital and interest which has formed the basis for the so-called "golden rule of accumulation". This states that to maximise real income, the optimum rate of interest should equal the growth rate of the economy. Allais did not publish in English until late in his career and as a result was slow to receive the international recognition that was his due. Following Robbins' death, his library was sold on behalf of his family by the booksellers John Boyle and Frognal Books. Books published prior to 1870 were sold to the Bank of Italy, those post-1870 to the Dutch economist Arnold Heertje, who selected a number for his own collection and sold most of the remaining books to the collector Robert Leon (the rest of the remaining books were sold to … [Click Below for Full Description]

… [Click Below for Full Description]

WALKER, Lewis
N.p.: N.p, 1947. Unique photo album. Screw-bound folio. One hundred tipped-in black and white silver gelatin prints by noted naturalist Lewis Walker. Published ephemera relating to some of the images laid in. One article in the November 1945 issue of "Natural History" is SIGNED by Walker and inscribed to friends. Photograph sizes vary; some are as large as 12 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches, some are 7 x 5 inch prints, but many are 8 x 10 inch prints; a few in unusual sizes. Mostly ornithological in nature, but also some photographs of insects, the Hawaiian mongoose, and waterfalls, many photographed nocturnally. Walker was a pioneer of nocturnal images of birds. The quality of the photographs, both day time and nocturnal, are uniformly exceptional and the album is artfully arranged. Walker published a book on owls in 1974 and was widely published in National Geographic and other nature journals. Some wear from handling, glue spots from pasting evident on some images, overall very good in screw-bound canvas covered boards. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

1947. ***Copy of photos, personal formats, graphics, or text is prohibited. Ebay may drop listings with infractions. I review content regularly. Baseball Hall of Fame Library Complete 27 Volume Author: Illustrations by Description: A beautiful set in extraordinary condition. This set includes extra details like gold gilt design right on the spine hubs (photos 3 and 4). Something done only on a few Easton Press books. I have put a bit higher premium because it's unusual to get the whole set in the box. Just getting them together in the plastic and complete is a challenge. I have included a sample photo of the back page ends just so you can see they have been stored properly and have no issues under the plastic. I picked this set up direct from the previous owner's storage and can verify they have been kept dry, indoors, and away from light. Though there are always the chance of private sellers (on-line yardsellers with no wholesale, shipping or operational fees) out there dumping the family library at any cost, keep in perspective that the price here is still WELL below $100 per book for a pristine set still in their boxes and well stored. If Easton Press tried to offer this set again (and there is no plan to do so) they might not even match that price and you couldn't get them all at once. Individual titles used and out of the plastic can go for over $100 depending on the title. Not only that, but the work of collecting is done for you. To the right collector, that's a pretty big benefit and a nice find! ***Please and kindly, no unsolicited offers. The Natural, Bernard Malm … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Pittsburgh)
1947. Very Good. Frame measures 26.5 x 26.5 inches, contains 3 signed 8x10 photos, plus hotel receipts for the two rooms at the Bailey Hotel occupied by Oscar Moore and his wife, and the Coles, in the next room over. The photos show some creases and wear. The Bailey Hotel was located in the historic African-American Pittsburgh neighborhood, the Hill District, close to the jazz clubs where these performers were booked -- the Crawford Grill on Wylie Ave. is a few minutes' walk to the east, for example. The Bailey was one of the hotels listed as welcoming in the Negro Motorist Green Book. The hotel slips for Cole and Moore are dated Feb. 17, 1947, probably during this same visit that Teenie Harris took a famous photo of Cole and his wife in the Hill District. Velma Middleton was a splendid vocalist, known for her long association with Louis Armstrong. The Southernaires were a fine vocal group, probably known back then for their having won a hotel discrimination lawsuit in 1942 that made national headlines. All three photos are signed, as well as the receipt by Coles, but can't tell if Moore signed his receipt. A lovely piece of Pittsburgh jazz history.

Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger (directors, screenwriters); Rumer Godden (novel); Deborah Kerr, Kathleen Byron, David Farrar (starring)
Universal City: Universal Pictures, 1947. American Post-production Continuity and Dialogue script for the 1947 film. With holograph ink annotations throughout. US mimeograph duplication of the British post-production script (so noted on the title page), with the annotations mostly having to do with deleted scenes. A group of Anglican nuns travel to a remote village in the Himalayas to establish a convent-a journey that heightens emotional tensions and spiritual unrest among the sisters and locals alike. A visually stunning Technicolor melodrama, and one of the Powell-Pressburger partnership's finest films. Nominated for two Academy Awards. White titled self wrappers, noted as CONTINUITY & DIALOGUE on the front wrapper, listed as production No. 5106, dated JUNE 24, 1946, with credits for actors Deborah Kerr, Sabu, David Farrar, Flora Robson, Esmond Knight, Jean Simmons, and Kathleen Byron. GOVERNMENT OF IRAQ, MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
1947. 8vo. Original light green printed wrappers, stapled; staples slightly rusty, small tears to head and tail of spine, wrappers a little stained and dust-soiled. A good copy of a fragile pamphlet. [2]title, [4]; [2], 7, [1]blank; [2], 7, [1]blank pp. Baghdad, Matba'at al-Hukumah (Government Press), A seemingly unrecorded official pamphlet, reprinting articles from the Charter of the Arab League (22 March 1945) and previous treaties between Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Published two years after the formation of the League, it was most likely produced to demonstrate Iraq?s part in earlier efforts of rapprochement and pan-Arab cooperation. It contains articles II (stating the purpose of the League, namely the strengthening of relations between member-states) and IX (allowing the member-states to conclude further agreements in line with the League?s tenets) from the 1945 charter, part of The Treaty of Arab Brotherhood and Alliance convened between Iraq and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (signed on 10 Muharram 1335/April 1936) and the instrument of Accession of the Kingdom of Yemen to that treaty. The 1936 treaty between Iraq and Saudi Arabia was an important step in the improved relations between the previously unfriendly Kingdoms. Though it represented pan-Arab ideas, the draft agreements ?objected to by the British? were more radical, and even proposed a mutual defensive treaty against aggression by a third party against either Kingdom. (see: Yehoshua Porath, In Search of Arab Unity 1930-1945, Routledge, 1986, p.181-3). No copies in Copac/Jisc or WorldCat. [Attributes: Signe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Patton
Boston: Houghton-Mifflin, 1947. VG-G/VG-G - Binding is quite tight, pages clean, some early pages slightly foxed , spine ends slightly edge-worn and spine slightly sunned with small discolorations at top and bottom -- owner's name is on fly title page; the dust jacket has some very small tears on spine ends and front corners and the spine is considerably sunned (see all photos). Extremely Rare Signed and Inscribed 1st Edition of General Patton's posthumously published thoughts and narratives - signed and inscribed by his wife, Beatrice Ayer Patton, who assembled from General Patton's letters to her, his diary, and his unfinished writings this exceptional book. While there have been numerous biographies of General Patton, none, I believe, has been able to capture the real Patton as this: his actual thoughts, written by him, not only on war but also on a wide range of interests ... with knowledge to match them -- on history, culture, geography, politics, religion, personalities, to name but a few. A unique and great historical figure in many respects as exemplified in this rare edition of the book. Laid in is an actual print (3 3/4" x 6 1/4") of photo from Ms. Patton of General Patton looking across the Rhine in March, 1945 (see my Photo # 12 here). Bradley Robinson; [Matthew A. Henson (1866-1955)]
New York: Robert M. McBride & Company, (1947). xviii, [2], 266pp. First edition. 8vo. Signed by both author and subject opposite the title-page. Publisher's black cloth, supplied with a very good mildly-soiled dust jacket which has a few nicks and two closed tears to rear panel. Previous owner's signature on endpaper. Endpapers photo-illustrated and with Arctic map. Overall, a very good and handsome copy. Biography of African American explorer Matthew A. Henson (1866-1955), credited as the first man to reach the North Pole. This copy signed by Henson and by the author with whom Henson collaborated in documenting his adventures. In 1908-1909, Henson accompanied explorer and U.S. Navy officer Robert Peary (1856-1920) on an expedition to the North Pole, reaching their goal on April 6, 1909. Henson had met Peary by chance in 1887 and accompanied him as a valet on a trip to survey a canal route through Nicaragua. "Peary soon found that Henson's ability to help chart a path through the jungles and his experiences as a seaman made him more valuable as a colleague than as a valet. Peary took Henson with him on all his trips to the Arctic except his first in 1886: 1891-1892, 1893-1895, 1896, 1897, 1898-1902, 1905-1906, and the final dash to the pole 1908-1909." (DANB) Despite some claims that the records of final expedition to the pole had been falsified, scholars credit Henson with being the first man to actually reach the Pole. Henson wrote a memoir of his Arctic explorations, A Negro Explorer at the North Pole (1912), but, because of his race, wider recognition did not come u … [Click Below for Full Description]

1947. Large engraved chart, measuring 1402 by 714mm. Scale 1:330,000. Several small dents to margins, some very light spotting, annotations in blue pencil to verso, otherwise very good. Block correction pasted onto section of chart. London, Admiralty, 14th April 1939, with printed corrections to A rare Admiralty chart of the coast from Umm Al Quawain (UAE) to Ras Matbakh (Qatar). It shows Sharjah, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and almost the entirety of the United Arab Emirates coastline (then called the Trucial Coast). The east coast of Qatar is also present, with a printed block correction updating the section including Doha and Al Wakrah. Despite the impressive detail, the text beneath the title urges circumspection: ?This chart should be used with great caution, as except in the vicinity of Jezirat Yas and Sharjah, it is compiled from old and imperfect surveys [likely those undertaken by G. Brucks and S. Haines (1821-29), and C. Constable and A. Stiffe (1857-60)].?

The albums contain a vast array of subjects and settings in and around Yokohama during the occupation period, most with identifying captions beneath the photos or near the edges of the images, showing soldiers lounging and clowning around in the barracks, working in the office and outside, and also moving along the streets of Yokohama, photographs in which Grigsby captures the local citizenry he encountered during his time in Japan.
