MARCUSE, Herbert, Philosoph und Soziologe (1898-1979)
Washington DC 1 1, 1947. 1 Seite, gr-8, mit eigh. Kuvert. - An eine ehemalige Kollegin vom amerikanischen Geheimdienst, die ihm in Bern Bücher besorgt hatte. "Dear Mrs. Parsons: I was awfully happy and surprised when I received the Guardini and Camus from Bern. It is really very nice of you to have remembered my wishes. But I have not yet received the bill. If you paid for the books, please let me know how much, and where I shall send the money. / What about coming back to Washington and taking again a job in BR? The outfit apparently expands and needs good people. If you don't want to return, drop a line telling us how you are. And many, many thanks for your efforts to get me the books. With best wishes, Yours very sincerely, Herbert Marcuse". Marcuse nahm 1942 eine neue Stellung in Washington D.C. beim Office of Strategic Services (OSS), Amerikas erstem Geheimdienst, an. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

(INDIAN NATIONAL ARMY.) GIANI, Kesar Singh.
Lahore: Singh Brothers,, 1947. Octavo. Original paper covered pictorial boards, plain endpapers. In the pictorial dust jacket. Housed in tricolour cloth drop-back box, the colours of the INA flag with spinning wheel device in blue, I.N.A. gilt to the spine. Half-tone photographic frontispiece of "memorial to unknown Azad Hind Martyrs at Singapore" and 24 similar plates, some double sided. Front hinge neatly repaired text block solid, a very good copy in the very good, slightly foxed, dust jacket. First and only edition of 2,000. This is a scarce account of the history, goals and administration of Azad Hind (Free India) by Kesar Singh Giani, who worked as a civil administrator for its Provisional Government; Copac shows only 3 locations (BL, Oxford and SOAS). The idea of establishing a Free Indian State opposed to British rule in the country was conceived at a conference in Tokyo 1942 and a government in exile was established in Singapore in 1943. The rebel state and its Indian National Army was led by Subhas Chandra Bose from 1943 until his death in a plane crash in 1945. The author of this account was motivated to publish it after reading so many hastily produced books about the movement in which "the writers indulged in half-truths and produced reading matter, which gives very meagre and scanty knowledge and mostly incorrect and incomplete information" (p. 10). As an Indian living in East Asia since 1936 and a member of the Azad Hind Sewak Dal, charged with administrating areas under the control of Azad Hind, he had access to a great number and variety of official publi … [Click Below for Full Description]

POCK, Alexander.
Pörtschach am Wörthersee: , 1947. MEMENTO OF A NOTED AUSTRIAN ARTIST AT WÖRTHERSEE Octavo. Original red three-quarter cloth, floral boards. 6 pencil drawings by Pock. A little rubbed, else very good. The guest-book for Werzer's famous Gasthof "zum Weißes Rössl" at Pörtschach am Wörthersee, now the home of the Brahms Haus Museum, containing six highly-finished pencil drawings by Alexander Pock: 1) Mounted officer, with New Year's wishes for 1947, dated on 26 December 1946; 2) Bust-portrait of a feldmarschal, 23 March 1947; 3) Two sailors, "on a cozy and beautiful afternoon" 20 April 1947; 4) Bust-portrait of a general "Before setting out for Carinthia" dated 11 May 1947; 5) Drum major, "drawn on a cozy Sunday afternoon" of 12 October 1947; and 6) Mounted bugler, dated 16 November 1947. Born in Znojmo, Moravia, now in the Czech Republic, Alexander Pock (1871-1950), became one of the most popular Austrian military, genre and portrait painters of his period. He studied at the Vienna Academy under Christian Griepenkerl and Carl Rudolph Huber, showing early enthusiasm for military subjects, with a special talent for equestrian portraits. He came to the attention of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who became an important patron, and provided many prestigious commissions for Pock. Immediately after Franz Ferdinand's assassination in Sarajevo and the outbreak of the First World War, Pock signed up as a war artist, working at the Front in Galicia, Transylvania, in the Krn (Isonzo) and South Tyrol. Pock had great facility as a sketch artist, quickly working up his studies from life … [Click Below for Full Description]

VEGTER, Jaap
(1947). (1947). Jaap Vegter (1932-2003) was a highly regarded Dutch satirist and comic artist who worked for numerous newspapers and magazines. He often gave a clever and humorous comment on events and people from political, social and cultural life. This is one of his early works, a pen and ink drawing on paper of a group of men and boys arrayed before a naked recumbent boy wearing a sailor's cap. The artist has also decorated the frame in pen and ink with the caption: "JongelingenVereeniging op Gereformeerde Grondslag" and his signature in the lower frame. The subject relates to the "League of Youth Associations" a youth movement associated with the Dutch Reformed Churches where boys were made acquainted with the anti-revolutionary principles. Brown, Margaret Wise; Hurd, Clement
(New York): Harper & Brothers, 1947. Very good plus to near fine.. Original quarter green cloth, color pictorial boards. Yellow pastedowns. Illustrated by Hurd in color throughout. [32] pages. Light edgewear to boards. Early printing of the notoriously elusive bedtime classic. GOODNIGHT MOON captures the comfort and enchantment of cozy bedtime hours shared with a loved one. By choosing to transform the characters from humans into rabbits, "the resulting book, rather than being tied to a human environment, achieved an otherworldly, timeless dimension" (Silvey). There is currently no authoritative method of determining first printing copies of GOODNIGHT MOON except through the price on the scarce dust jacket (which is even rarer to find unclipped). In copies lacking the jacket, as this one, the Harper & Brothers imprint indicates an early printing, before the publisher became Harper & Row. A masterful and arguably perfect book.

SCHULBERG, Budd
Random House, New York, 1947. First edition. A small, faint stain on the top edge, still fine in a very near fine dustwrapper with a bit of rubbing and a couple of small and unnecessary internal repairs. Signed by the author. A scathing indictment of the manipulation of professional boxers, no less relevant today than it was fifty years ago. Basis for the powerful Mark Robson film in which Humphrey Bogart, in his final role, plays a cynical press agent who comes to realize the extent to which prizefighters are pawns of their managers and racketeers. HAUTEFEUILLE,Guy de (Antonin Ivanovitch Soungouroff, illus)
Au Mont de Venus (1947). 4to. 24 full page illustrations. Au Mont de Venus (1947). 4to. 24 full page illustrations. A quite uncommon illustrated erotic text, recounting the various heterosexual and homosexual encounters of a young Frenchmen. The book was condemned by the French Tribunal the year after publication (and again in 1953) and is exceedingly uncommon, but the identity of the author remains unknown. The illustrator, although not attributed, was undoubtedly Antonin Soungouroff, a Russian emigre who settled in France in the 1930s. He was a denizen of the south of France and became known for his portraits of attractive young fisherman in the area (many of which decorated the walls of the famous Zanzibar in Cannes). Friends with many avant-garde artists such as Jean Cocteau, Christian Bérard and Roger Peyrefitte, his works were collected by many in the gay world of the 1950s and 60s. Dutel 1819. Bécourt, Livres condamnés 43. Very good in wrappers, light edgewear, occasional edgewear, chemise and slipcase are worn at edges, but intact. [Attributes: First Edition]

P G Wodehouse
1947. Typed letter, signed from P. G. Wodehouse [1881-1975] perhaps England's greatest comic novelist. A very good letter, tinged with melancholy to Jon Wynne Tyson [1924-2020] publisher and sometime 'King of Redonda', a tiny islet in the Caribbean, a half fanciful, half real creation originally stemming from the imagination of the writer MP Sheil. Wodehouse's letter dated 6th July 1947 in response to a letter from Wynne Tyson from NY city. .Thank you so much for your letter. I'm so glad that you liked J in the M ['Joy in the Morning' featuring Jeeves and Wooster] so much. It did extraordinarily well over here last year, in spite of the New Yorker saying that the time had come for me to realize that Jeeves had become a bore. It called it 'this sorry effort', which was a nasty way of putting it. Agony, though, that you didn't care for Money in the Bank. I thought it out and wrote Money in the Bank while a prisoner in a German internment camp, working throughout in long hand, and it may be that shades of the prison house linger. I was distressed to hear that J D Beresford [an English novelist of science fiction and supernatural tales] had written me a letter which I never received. It was extraordinarily good of him to write and I hope he realized, when he got no answer, that the thing had gone astray (as two out of three letters did in those days). I met him once when I went to Brighton to watch the Dulwich v. Brighton cricket match (1928 or 1929) and liked him enormously. I always wished I could have seen more of him. I hope your writing prospers, I agree with you about the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Works Publishing, 1947. SIGNED BY DR BOB SMITH, CO-FOUNDER OF ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS!! 1st Edition 11th Printing Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous from 1947 with original dust jacket. Dr Bob's signatures are much more rare than Bill's, mostly because Bob died 21 years earlier, but also because he was much more reserved than Bill. This has his classic inscription, 'Best of continued success in AA.' Dr Bob helped an estimated 5000 alcoholics during his 15 years in AA. This book came from a deceased physician's collection in Southern California that had several items signed by Bill and Bob. A personal library stamp on the title page, sticker residue inside back the cover, and some staining on the back board. Otherwise this book is in excellent shape!! No apparent writing. DJ in great shape as well. Book comes with a FREE custom made wooden box. Please see photos and feel free to message me with any questions. Do you need a Dr Bob signature for your collection? ITEMS LIKE THIS ARE GETTING HARDER AND HARDER TO FIND WITH THE INCREASING NUMBER OF ARCHIVES AND PRIVATE COLLECTIONS!! Pete L from Palmer, TX ('Pete from Palmer') used to say..."$6k minimum for a napkin or directory, but his full name in a Big Book? $15-20k." A solid investment for any collector, of AA and related items, books in general, signatures, etc. Thank you for your support. -Sean C. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

Japan Hydrogen Industry Co, Ltd. [Onahama, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan], 1947. Cloth album, 12 x 8.5 inches, containing 33 silver gelatin photographs mounted to rectos only, with printed captions in English and Japanese on facing pages. Very good. In the aftermath of World War II, the Allied powers recognized the importance of stabilizing the Japanese economy as part of a larger effort to prevent Japan's remilitarization and stave off the spread of communism. With the assistance of foreign aid, the Japanese government invested heavily in strengthening its industrial and manufacturing capacity. Economic development efforts in the coal-producing region of Fukushima Prefecture centered on the construction of chemical factories and related infrastructure. The Japan Hydrogen Industry Company (also known as Nihon Suiso Company), which had been founded in the port city of Onahama in 1937, became the core of the industrialization effort in the region after the war. This album, produced in 1947, was likely used in an effort to attract American investment. The company was involved in the gasification of pulverized coal (producing-depending on the exact process-coal gas, water gas, or syngas, all combustible gases used for municipal lighting and heating prior to the large-scale production of natural gas) as well as the production of ammonium sulfate and methanol. The album shows the plant's coke room; gas generators, compressors, and storage tanks; carbon monoxide converters; pumps for moving chemicals in solution; centrifuges; acid cooling process; ammonium sulphate storage room; an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Prague: 1947-1948. Quartos (29.3 × 21 cm). Original staple-stitched pictorial wrappers; 16 pp. per issue. Occasional old vertical creases and light wear to spine folds; final issue lacks rear wrapper; overall still about very good. Complete run comprising fifteen issues in thirteen fascicles (two double issues) of the first Czech periodical devoted entirely to jazz. The first issue leads with a quotation by the Czech avant-garde theatre figures Voskovec and Werich, which proclaims that "to view jazz as the music 'of some black people' is fascism, even if it is unconscious." The journal contains a wealth of photo-illustrated articles on Don Redman, the origins of Afro-American music, Tricky Sam Nanton, blues, King Cole Trio, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, the music culture of New Orleans and New York, and much else. Also of interest are book and film reviews, as well as extensive discographies and notes about local Czech jazz happenings. Remarkably, the journal was published from May 1947 to April 1948, right through the Communist coup of February 1948, which changed things drastically: "The communists' accession to power in 1948 prevented the release of major publications by the various protagonists of the jazz scene; only a few rather critical newspaper articles made it past the censorship system. Indeed, the state encouraged works that defamed jazz, such as the pamphlet Muzyka duchovnoj ni??ety (Mental poverty in music) by the Soviet musicologist Victor Gorodinski, who accused the genre of "mental poverty" and "enslavement" (Wolf-Georg Zaddach, "Jazz in Czechoslovakia d … [Click Below for Full Description]
