1947. Used book in very good condition with a worn dust jacket. Alcoholics Anonymous 1st Edition 11th Printing 1947 Works Publishing Inc.original dust jacket Works Publishing, Inc., New York, 1939, stated 11th printing June 1947, viii + [1] + 400 + [4] pages. There is no apparent writing in the book and there are no missing pages, the binding is tight, the cover has mild indication of wear and soiling, the gilt lettering is bright and almost completely intact, and the text pages are age-toned with foxed end papers. The original dust jacket has missing pieces all along the edges and the hinges are barely hanging on to the main panels. The book is in very good condition with a worn dust jacket. This is the 11th printing of which there were 25,000 copies printed, far fewer than ensuing printings that reached 50,000 copies each. While many believe there were no changes to the main text of the first edition, this is the copy in which five references to "ex-alcoholics" were changed to phrases such as "ex-problem drinker," "understanding fellows," and "a non-drinking." This is an excellent opportunity for a collection or archive of A.A. material. PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION AND ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE PURCHASING THE BOOK.

CHAS ADDAMS
1947. When ordering from the US, parcels may be subject to import tax and duty charges, which the buyer is responsible to pay. ADDAMS AND EVIL LATER PRINTING, 1947 CHAS ADDAMS Simon and Schuster, 1947 First Edition, Later Printing A large very clean book (11.25″ x 8″) with a spectacular, large example of an original full length sketch of Wednesday Addams in her classic pose, hands behind her back, and long stringy hair. Note, that the final published drawing by Charles Addams can sell in excess of $20,000, so original sketches are highly collectible! Addams signed and dated the artwork in his classic signature of "Chas Addams / New York 1958", along with his neat inscription of "To Audrena for Bob Guy". In slightly rubbed boards, with the scarce original lightly rubbed/chipped dust jacket with fantastic artwork. Scarce signed book with an original drawing. Will come with a PSA/DNA certificate of authenticity! In 1935 Addams was hired by The New Yorker as a regular cartoonist. The pay was modest--just $35 per cartoon--but the magazine allowed him to explore his voice and imagination as well as hone the dark humor that would come to define his work. His famous, "creepy and kooky" Addams Family, later adapted for television and film productions. He demonstrated an appreciation for the macabre at an early age. He had a deep fascination for coffins and skeletons, as well as a good practical joke. "We had a dumbwaiter in our house," he later recounted, "and I'd get inside on the ground floor, and then very quietly I'd haul myself up to grandmother's floor, and then I'd knock on t … [Click Below for Full Description]

REPRODUCED BY ENGINEER SECTION ARMY ADVISORY GROUP
Nanking, 1947. An interesting booklet published between the end of World War II and the conquest of China by the Communists. The booklet is addressed to the wives of United States Army Personal stationed in China and allied with the Nationalist Forces; it is intended to help make their stay more congenial, and gives extensive details about daily life in China, such as places to shop, to eat, and to worship. The main base for personal was in Nanking, but the closest city with extensive amenities was Shanghai and so a considerable amount of the book is a guide to that city. Also included are shorter sections on Beijing, Hangchow, Cheng Tu, Hankow, and Tsing-Tao, as well as the Great Wall of China. The mentions the very unsettled state of lands north of the Yellow River - of course, a reference to the Maoist forces. The book has one map on the inside front covers. There appears to have been a place prepared in the book for a Shanghai map, but it is unknown whether this was ever printed. Extensive sketches (by Gyula Singer) and photographic illustrations. 24 x 17cm, 88 pages. Bound in original illustrated wrappers. Some wear to wrappers, chafing to spine, but overall a good copy. I could locate only three copies of this scarce booklet in United States libraries.

INTO THE NIGHT LIFE 1947 HENRY MILLER BEZALEL SCHATZ please see pictures posted " Eighteen months solid work was required to reflect this interlinear which Freud once referred to as a veritable " Anabasis of Dream " . One can now understand why Each Copy No Matter What Number it Bears , is an Original . to make doubly sure , the screens were destroyed . only a combined genius of doctors Mabuse and Caligari could bring about a second edition . Your Copy Is an Original , Remember That . The witting , which is in longhand and the designs and illustrations , which are also in long hand , blend. Exactly like Body and Soul . To Accomplish this Miracle over 1900 Experimental Pages Were Made " Henry Miller " The handwriting, notwithstanding irregularities, is easy to read-smooth, flowing, though occasionally interrupted by rigidly perpendicular written parts. His hand moves in the rhythm of the text, now in a quiet, almost persuasive style, steady and thin, suddenly getting thicker, angrier, rougher, with violent words-in red ink-like curses thrown in, heavily underlined. Then the waves rise, rolling over the paper on the swell of horror, grimmer, fiercer, weakening again, and occasionally ending in a desperate ink-blot. Into these movements the painter Schatz, de sa part, wove his lines, drew his parallel view of the essentials of the dream: the sexual symbols, the mother-womb, the embryo, the night bird of horror. Not Miller's dreams alone but their assimilated experiences gave birth to a gruesome, cruel, unequalled, colorful and authentic short-hand report of our lives behind th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gridley, Marion E. (editor)
Millar Publishing Company, Chicago. Chicago: Millar Publishing Company:, 1947. First edition, Hardcover, Good with no dust jacket, 111 pp. An extremely interesting book for a number of reasons. A book of pictures and short bios of a number of prominent Native Americans. Seven of those profiled in this book sign and/or inscribe the book on their profile page to the book's previous owner. Nice. What's really nice is that one of those to sign (with no inscription) is Jim Thorpe. Thorpe's signature appears above his name and photo on the page with his entry. The previous owner was obviously very proud of this as the page was marked both with tape (since removed) and a paper clip that, ultimately, resulted in a hole about .33 inches by 1.0 inches adjacent to Thorpe's signature. A wonder historical document in its own right. However, the Jim Thorpe fan or autograph collector could excise this page, place a matte behind it, and frame it, rendering the hole nearly invisible. There is a tape ghost near the signature as well but, overall, this is quite a remarkable item and a genuine rarity. HUTCHINSON, A.S.M (Arthur Stuart-Mentet) [1879-1971]
1947. Arthur Stuart-Mentet Hutchinson was a British novelist and the editor of the London illustrated newspaper, The Daily Graphic. He wrote romance and family novels as well as short stories for publications such as The Sphere Magazine. His best-selling novel, If Winter Comes, was in many aspects ahead of its time, dealing with an unhappy marriage, eventual divorce, and an unwed mother who commits suicide. The A.S.M. Hutchinson collection consists of 21 items dating from 1922 to 1947, specifically, 10 letters, 2 pieces of sheet music, 1 book, 7 b&w photos and 1 colour photo cigarette card. 10 letters (8 Autograph Letters Signed ALS and 2 Typed Letters Signed): ? 4 ALS and a TLS (8 pp. in all) to Miss Bickley, 21 June 1923, 12 February 1924, 24 May 1926, 23 June 1926, and 26 June 1927, re her appreciation of Hutchinson`s work, her condolences on his mother`s death, house hunting. ? 2 ALS (3 pp.) to Mr. Reynolds, 12 November 1935 and 13 December 1935, re Reynolds's appreciation of Hutchinson's work and the publication of A Year That the Locust-. ? ALS (3 pp.) to Norman Davey (English engineer, poet, and novelist), 4 October 1922, sending thanks for his letter, and replying in part: ". . . Few novelists, I think, can have had praise so splendid; no novelists, I know, but you & Sadleir, could so generously have estimated the work of another. . What is so utterly delightful is that, a fellow craftsman, you pick out the bits of work, that, as a craftsman, appeal to you. CAMUS, ALBERT
Paris: Gallimard, 1947. First edition. FIRST EDITION, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY CAMUS. AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY: INSCRIBED BY CAMUS TO FRENCH LITERARY FIGURE JACQUES HÉBERTOT. Inscribed on half-title: "A Jacques Hébertot / En témoignage d'amitié affectueuse / son obligé / Albert Camus". [To Jacques Hébertot / In testimony of affectionate friendship / His grateful / Albert Camus]. "The longest and most ambitious of his fictions, Albert Camus's novel The Plague is widely regarded as his masterpiece. It is certainly an artistic tour de force: a vividly realistic account of a harrowing imaginary event" (Murray Sachs). "When The Plague was first published in 1947, the majority of French critics greeted it as an allegorical presentation, not only of la condition humaine in general, but also of the particular experience of the German occupation... Yet it would be an extremely limiting interpretation to see in The Plague only the description of a single historical experience. The struggle against plague and occupation are part of a wider struggle, not only against the physical evil inherent in the world, but also against the evil which men, by their blindness and indifference as well as by their cruelty, do to one another" (Philip Thody). The recipient of this copy, Jacques Hébertot, (1886-1970) was a legendary French theater director, journalist, poet, publisher, and editor. Camus's plays Caligula (1945) and Les Justes (1949) both premiered at Hébertot's highly influential theater, Le Théâtre Hébertot. Upon his death, the French journalist Bertrand Poirot-Delpech, writing in Le … [Click Below for Full Description]
