        RAR Eames Plastic Armchair. Schaukelstuhl.

I WALK ALONE (1948)

Paramount 1948 - Vintage original 22 x 28" (56 x 71 cm.) half sheet poster style B, USA. Burt Lancaster, Lizabeth Scott, Kirk Douglas, Wendell Cory, Kristine Miller, George Rigaud, dir: Byron Haskin; Paramount. Finely remembered and regarded film noir and nice testament to star Lizabeth Scott. When Frankie is sprung out of prison after 14 years, he expects his bootlegging partner, who has since made good, to stick to their 50/50 agreement. Noll Turner has no intention of doing that, even though torch singer femme fatale Kay does her best to intervene. Their first film together, Douglas and Lancaster would form a company and make six more films. Lancaster appears on this poster with Liz Scott. This is by far the best poster for this film which we have ever seen. Paper-backed, originally twice folded, with very minor touch-ups. ABOUT FINE

        The Second World War

London: Cassell & Co. Ltd,, 1948–54. 6 volumes, octavo (208 x 132 mm). Contemporary French dark blue half morocco (with the original dust jackets bound in), spines gilt tooled direct, marbled sides and endpapers, tricolour silk page markers. Maps and diagrams, some folding. Touch of foxing to top and fore-edges otherwise a very good set, handsomely bound. First UK editions, first impressions of volumes II-VI, "new edition, revised and reset" of volume I. Signed and dated by Churchill on the front free endpaper: "Winston S. Churchill 1951"; inscribed on the same leaf "To my friend Pierre Crohare. C. J. Gilmour-Wood. Chairman Royal Air Forces Association. Paris Branch 1948/49". Squadron Leader C. J. Gilmour-Wood was a wartime RAF liaison officer and Octave "Pierre" Crohare (b. 1901) a highly-decorated member of the French Résistance. A Parisian, Crohare was a policeman in the 1930s, promoted to special investigator in 1938. However, in 1942 he was dismissed from the force for belonging to a Masonic lodge and giving false information. He then purchased a café (situated at 3 Rue de la Folie-Regnault in the 11 arrondissement) and during the German occupation became a very active member of the clandestine Resistance groups Turma-Vengeance and L'Honneur de la Police. His café soon became a meeting place for the Résistance. Under the pseudonym "Pierre", Crohare worked closely with the maquis. However, in June 1944 he was arrested by the German police, imprisoned, tortured and deported to Péronne. His wife Susanne was also arrested and sent to prison in Fresnes. In 1944 the US First Army released Crohare and he was instrumental in assisting the Americans to clear remaining pockets of German resistance, and acted as an interpreter. After the war he rejoined the police as a commissaire, ending his career as chef des services spéciaux (chief of special services) with responsibility for the protection of visiting dignitaries. He may have met Gilmour-Wood when the latter was in charge of the guard of honour for Princess Elizabeth's visit to Paris in June 1948. They may also have been in attendance during Churchill's visit to Paris in April 1951. Crohare was awarded the Legion d'Honneur, La Croix de Guerre, the Medal of Freedom, and the Medaille de la Résistance avec rosette. Volume II is also inscribed to Crohare (using an anglicized version of his pseudonym): "To 'Peter' hoping that this 'Second Volume' will make him more than anxious to read the 'Third Volume'. W. W. Jackson, Paris 20/6/51." Jackson was a flying officer with the RAF, described by Aeroplane and Commercial Aviation News (Volume 86, 1954) as the "secretary, press officer and general factotum of the [RAF] Association's European Central Committee and the Paris Branch. He will give you a drink in the Free French Club bar and advice and assistance if you are in need of them". The Second World War is Churchill's masterpiece, the single most important historical account of that conflict. Cassell were scrupulous in incorporating Churchill's extensive revisions, and he always insisted that the UK edition was definitive. Max Beloff observed that there was no statesman of the twentieth century "whose retrospective accounts of the great events in which he has taken part have so dominated subsequent historical thinking." A man who had always primarily made his living by his pen, Churchill was the only major war leader to give an authoritative account of the conflict, and his ringing phrases seeped into the collective memory. As J. H. Plumb noted in his essay in A. J. P. Taylor's Churchill: Four Faces and the Man, "Churchill the historian lies at the very heart of all historiography of the Second World War, and will always remain there… [we still] move down the broad avenues which he drove through war's confusion and complexity".
