The Second World War

London: Cassell & Co. Ltd.,, 1948–54. 6 volumes, octavo (207 × 131 mm) Bound in near contemporary red half morocco on matched boards by Maurin - miniscule ink-stamp top corner verso of the front free endpapers - flattened bands with gilt foliate roll forming 6 compartments with single fillet panel, title in the second and author in the fourth, floral spray corner-pieces to the rest, single gilt rule to the spine and corner edges, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Maps and diagrams, some folding. Minimal shelf-wear, internally clean and bright, a very handsome set. First editions, first impressions of Churchill's masterpiece in a highly attractive fine binding. Undoubtedly the single most important historical account of the Second World War. Max Beloff observed that there was no statesman of the twentieth century "whose retrospective accounts of the great events in which he has taken part have so dominated subsequent historical thinking." A man who had always primarily made his living by his pen, Churchill was the only major war leader to give an authoritative account of the conflict, and his ringing phrases seeped into the collective memory. As J. H. Plumb noted in his essay in A. J. P. Taylor's Churchill: Four Faces and the Man "Churchill the historian lies at the very heart of all historiography of the Second World War, and will always remain there… [we still] move down the broad avenues which he drove through war's confusion and complexity."

LENINGRAD DURING THE GREAT PATRIOTIC WAR (18 Woodcuts in Portfolio)

1948. Original Wrappers. Folio. A prominent Russian Jewish artist and illustrator, Yudovin typically depicted life of Jewish township and people in both Soviet and imperial Russia; this suite of engravings was an unusual departure for Yudovin near the end of his life as he passed the Second World War in Leningrad. Scenes of besieged Leningrad are powerfully rendered in these prints. The suite is complete with 18 engravings--a few with some marginal spotting (the first is particularly heavy, but limited to the margins)--laid in to a printed portfolio with a single bifolium introduction with list of contents; the text is in Russian; this is quite an uncommon suite; digital images can be made available upon request.

Original Hand-Bound Mock-Up for The Grindstone of God: A Samoyed Fable, with 26 Original Pencil Illustrations by Bernarda Bryson Shahn

      - An enigmatic folktale in which a fox and a horse, each starving to death, must decide among themselves which one is to die. Shahn's animal illustrations are lively and accurate throughout. This is presumably an unused trial version, as an ink note to the front cover states "do not use this dummy." Carl Withers was the author of the well-known 1948 poetry anthology A Rocket in My Pocket. Bernarda Bryson's 1963 book The Sun Is A Golden Earring was a Caldecott medalist. [Roosevelt, NJ: ca 1969-70]. Octavo (23.5cm). Red paper-covered boards; [28]pp. Original hand-made "dummy" of 28 pages, with text and illustrations tipped on to blank pages. Includes a hand-lettered title page and 26 original pencil drawings by Bernarda Shahn, illustrating the (mostly) animal characters in the text. In fine condition, as made. Physical Principles Involved in Transistor Action.Lancaster: American Physical Society, 1949. First edition.

The first comprehensive report on the transistor; one of the most important inventions of the 20th Century.

❧ Origins of Cyberspace 450.

The invention of the transistor was first announced in three short letters by Bardeen, Brattain, Shockley, and Pearson, in The Physical Review (July 1948). The following year Bardeen and Brattain published the more comprehensive report 'Physical Principles Involved in Transistor Action'. This paper was simultaneously published, the same month, in The Physical Review [as offered here] and Bell System Technical Journal [no priority established]. In 1956 Bardeen and Brattain shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with William Shockley "for their researches on semiconductors and their discovery of the transistor effect". In 1972 Bardeen again received the Nobel Prize in Physics for his part in the development of the theory of superconductivity (BCS-theory), and thus became the only person, until this day, to receive the Nobel Prize more than once in the same field.. The Origin of Chemical Elements

Lancaster PA and New York: American Institute of Physics. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. FIRST EDITION of the scientific foundation for the Big Bang theory: the famous "Alpha=Beta-Gamma" paper. Physicist George Gamow "was interested in the Big Bang in relation to nucleosynthesis- the formation of atomic nuclei. Gamow wanted to see whether nuclear physics and the Big Bang could explain the observed atomic abundances," specifically, "whether the early moments of the Big Bang could be responsible for our universe being dominated by hydrogen and helium." With his graduate student Ralph Alpher, Gamow began constructing an ingenius mathematical model that attempted to explain the nuclear processes that would have occurred at the conditions of the extreme heat of the very early universe. They "spent three years working through their calculations, questioning their assumptions, updating their cross-sections and refining their estimates... This was an extraordinary adventure. They were applying concrete physics to a previously vague Big Bang theory, attempting to mathematically model the conditions and events of the early universe. They were estimating initial conditions and applying the laws of nuclear physics to see how the universe evolved with time and how the processes of nucleosynthesis progressed." The result was a stunning success. With their model, Alpher and Gamow could predict the formation of hydrogen and helium in the observed proportions ( 99.99% of all atoms ) in the universe. "This result was the first major triumph for the Big Bang model since Hubble had observed and measured the redshifts of galaxies." When Gamow and Alpher's paper, "The Origin of Chemical Elements" was being sent for publication in the April 1, 1948 issue (April Fool's Day) of the Physical Review, Gamow couldn't resist playing a little joke on the scientific community. Even though his good friend Hans Bethe contributed nothing to the paper, Gamow added his name to the list of authors so the readers could enjoy the sight of a paper authored by Alpher, Bethe, Gamow and appreciate the pun on the Greek letters alpha, beta, and gamma. One of the unintended consequences of this joke was that is stripped the young Alpher of much of the credit due to him, for the public naturally assumed that the famous Bethe and Gamow had now done all the work. "The Alpha-Beta-Gamma paper, as it became known, was a milestone in the Big Bang versus eternal universe debate. It showed that it was possible to do real calculations relating to the nuclear processes that might have occurred after a hypothetical Big Bang, and thus test this theory of creation. Big Bang supporters could now point to two pieces of evidence, the expansion of the universe and the abundance of hydrogen and helium, and show that they were entirely consistent with the Big Bang model of the universe." Simon Singh, Big Bang: The Origin of the Universe, pp. 306-336. IN: The Physical Review, Vol. 73, No. 7, pp. 803-4; April 1 1948. Lancaster, PA and New York, NY: American Institute of Physics, 1948. London & Ayot St. Lawrence. 27 May 1948 through 25 January 1950.. Five items, as detailed below. Two autograph lettercards from Shaw, one t.l.s. from Box, with Shaw's manuscript response, and two retained carbons of Box's letters to Shaw. Very good. British film producer Sidney Box here endeavors, without luck, to get Shaw to grant him cooperation and/or rights to films based on or derived from his works. In his letter of 27 May 1948, Box inquires of Shaw's interest in joining with Maugham and Noel Coward in a series of films "starring writers instead of actors ....," in the form of a selection of scenes/vignettes from the works, accompanied by the writer speaking in context. Shaw's response, if any, is not present. On 20 July 1949, Box writes again, this time seeking permission to film THE DEVIL'S DISCIPLE and offering 10% of the gross and promises of textual and artistic integrity. Shaw responds on 21 July 1949: "Many thanks for your proposal and its quite satisfactory terms; but the filming of the Devil's Disciple is engaged to Gabriel Pascal. He is at present in the U.S.A. in bed after an operation; so I shall bear you in mind in case ---- ???? G. Bernard Shaw." On 25 July Box responds: "I cannot wait for Gabriel Pascal to die; he is extremely tough and, if he takes care of himself one half as well as you do, will live to be 105." He then asks: "How about 'The Doctor's Dilemma' on similar terms to those set out in my letter of July 20th?" Shaw responds in a blank portion of Box's letter: "NO. Gabriel has the whole boodle as long as he is alive and efficient. But he may be dead: the operation was a serious one. GBS 26/7/49." In response, evidently, to a further entreaty from Box - not present - Shaw writes him on one of his printed lettercards, c/o Pinewood Studios: "25/1/1950 NO. Drop it. [indecipherable[] is not my subject. GBS." In fact, Gabriel Pascal lived until 1954, and produced films of four Shaw properties, although only one, ANDROCLES AND THE LION, appeared after Shaw's exchange with Box, in 1952. Guy Hamilton's version of THE DEVIL'S DISCIPLE was released in 1959, by which point Box was involved in television rather than film.

        The Spirit of Zen

John Murray|~| London: John Murray. (1948). Second printing of this early book by one of the first writers to popularize Zen in the West, and who helped draw the connections between Zen and other mystical traditions of both East and West. Watts was particularly taken by Zen's integration of the spiritual and the practical: the subtitle of the book is "A Way of Life, Work and Art in the Far East." The first printing of the book was done in 1936, and the second was not done until after the Second World War. Watts moved to California in 1951 and later experimented with, and wrote about, psychedelic drugs, comparing their effects to the mystical experiences described in Zen and other religious literature, thus helping give an entire generation justification for their own use of recreational drugs. He became a counterculture celebrity, albeit perhaps a slightly reluctant one. Inscribed by the author in the year of publication "to my good friend ___ ___ with very best wishes from the author - Alan W. Watts." Modest foxing to text; heavy offsetting to flyleaf, behind the inscription; handling to cloth; very good, without dust jacket. Books signed by Watts are fairly uncommon, especially from the early years of his career. . Hardcover.
