        Crusade in Europe

Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, 1948. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author, "For George Brooke with best wishes and warm regard from his friend Dwight D. Eisenhower 5 June 1954." Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Five-star General Dwight D. Eisenhower was arguably the single most important military figure of World War II. For many historians, his memoirs of this eventful period of U.S. history have become the single most important record of the war. Crusade in Europe tells the complete story of the war as Eisenhower planned and lived it. Through his eyes, the enormous scope and drama of the war-strategy, battles, moments of fateful decision-become fully illuminated in all their fateful glory. "Eisenhower gives the reader true insight into the most difficult part of a commander's life" (New York Times).

The Second World War, full set of six U S first editions

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1948. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a full, six-volume, jacketed set of first editions. The Second World War is Churchill's history of the epic 20th Century struggle that was so indelibly stamped by his leadership. Seldom, if ever, has history endowed a statesman with both singular ability to make history, and singular ability to write it. As with so much of what Churchill wrote, The Second World War is not "history" in the strictly academic, objectivist sense, but rather Churchill's perspective on history. In his March 1948 introduction to the first volume, Churchill himself made the disclaimer, "I do not describe it as history... it is a contribution to history..." Nonetheless the compelling fact remains, as stated by Churchill himself, "I am perhaps the only man who has passed through both the two supreme cataclysms of recorded history in high Cabinet office... I was for more than five years in this second struggle with Germany the Head of His Majesty's government. I write, therefore, from a different standpoint and with more authority than was possible in my earlier books." Certainly The Second World War may be regarded as an intensely personal and inherently biased history. Nonetheless, Churchill's work remains seminal, iconic, and a vital part of the historical record. The six-volume epic has been called "indispensable reading for anyone who seeks a true understanding of the war that made us what we are today." This U.S. first edition is not only more scarce today than its British counterpart, but is also the true first edition. The first U.S. volume, The Gathering Storm, was published in June 1948, while the British first edition was not published until October 1948. The sixth and final U.S. first edition volume, Triumph and Tragedy, was published during Churchill's second and final Premiership in November 1953. A Book-of-the-Month Club (BOMC) edition was published virtually simultaneously with the U.S. first edition and is quite similar in appearance (often causing confusion for disappointed collectors who think they are buying first editions). Note these are not the common BOMC look-alikes, but correct first trade editions in all respects: the dust jackets are unclipped and bear the correct, first printing $6.00 price. All top edges are stained dark yellow-orange. Title and copyright pages bear correct first printing indications. All volumes bear the distinctive red and yellow head and foot bands. There are no BOMC indentations on the rear covers. This first edition set shows some age and wear, but nonetheless features very good plus or better volumes in good plus or better dust jackets. Shelf presentation is imperfect but notably bright, with none of the typical fading of the vivid red, yellow, and orange hues. We note edgewear and chipping to all of the jackets, with a scuff at the title of the Volume III spine head. The dust jackets are protected beneath removable, archival quality clear covers. The first printing volumes all feature tight bindings that are clean and unfaded with bright shelf presentation. A trace of spotting appears confined to a few page edges and the Volume III endpapers. The sole previous ownership mark we find in the set is a previous owner name, with Baltimore address and dated ?Aug. ?50?, inked to the Volume I upper front free endpaper. Laid in at page 69 in Volume III we discovered an interesting wartime souvenir ? the front cover of a wartime matchbook cover printed in six lines: ?Buy | WAR SAVINGS | BONDS | and | STAMPS | close cover before striking?. This had clearly been laid in for the life of the volume, with transfer browning to the upper left of the page where the matchbook cover has lain all these years. Please note that this large set may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A240.1(I-VI).a, Woods/ICS A123(aa), Langworth p.258.

The Second World War, full set of six British first editions, inscribed in the first volume by the author's namesake grandson

London: Cassell and Company, Ltd., 1948. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Here is a full set of British first editions of The Second World War, inscribed and dated by the author?s namesake grandson in Volume I. The inscription, inked in blue in four lines on the half title recto of The Gathering Storm, reads: ?For Harvey | from | Winston S. Churchill | 9/11/92?. Winston S. Churchill (1940-2010), son of Randolph S. Churchill, was born exactly five months after his grandfather became wartime prime minister, days before the victorious conclusion to the Battle of Britain. The grandson ultimately served as a Conservative Member of Parliament for 27 years. The Second World War is Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill?s history of the epic 20th Century struggle that was so indelibly stamped by his leadership. Richard Langworth calls the six-volume epic "indispensable reading for anyone who seeks a true understanding of the war that made us what we are today." Jacketed British first edition sets in marginal condition are not uncommon. However, the coarse cloth bindings of this edition proved susceptible to soiling and mildew, the contents (printed on post-war "Economy Standards" paper) proved highly prone to spotting, the red-stained top edges are most often severely faded, and the dust jackets proved exceptionally vulnerable to pronounced spine toning. Consequently, superior jacketed sets have become scarce. This set is superior to many we encounter, featuring near fine volumes in very good or better dust jackets. The black cloth bindings remain uniformly clean, tight, and square with bright spine gilt. The contents show none of the spotting endemic to the first edition. The red topstain is modestly sunned, but retains respectable color. The only previous ownership mark we find in the set is a gift inscription dated ?Oct: 1948? ? the month of publication - inked on the upper front free endpaper of The Gathering Storm. Laid in at volumes IV, V, and VI we also found original Harrods purchase receipts, all bearing the same owner name and address. The dust jackets are complete, with all original prices intact on the front flaps and no losses or tears. We note only some trivial wear to extremities and mild but even toning to the jacket spines, with the red subtitle lettering faded but still legible. All six dust jackets are protected with removable, archival quality clear covers. Please note that this set may require additional postage.         47th Street [Inscribed, Signed, and Contemporarily Dated]

Prairie City, Illinois: The Decker Press, 1948. Hardcover. Near Fine/near fine. A Near Fine copy (small spot at bottom of rear board, lower corners tapped, minor shelf wear, some spotting to the closed page block's edges, slight leftward lean -- ironic perhaps), in a Very Good +dust jacket (age toning, small spot at bottom of rear panel, some spotting to the verso, light soiling and light edge wear) INSCRIBED, SIGNED, AND CONTEMPORARILY DATED BY FRANK MARSHALL DAVIS on the title page as follows: "To / Bill McBride / from a fellow artist / but of another field / Frank Marshall Davis / July 24, 1948". Davis was a poet, journalist, and political and social activist and former editor of the Atlanta Daily World, turning the paper from a semiweekly paper to the first successful black daily newspaper. Davis also served as a Member of the National Executive Board of the Civil Rights Congress, cited by the Truman Administration as a subversive organization. The Civil Rights Congress also was named a Communist Front in the House Un-American Activities Committee Report. Davis' work was resurrected during Amiri Baraka's (aka Everett LeRoi Jones) important Black Arts Movement. "47th Street" is named for Chicago's street of the same name. A very scarce book itself, signed copies are scarcer still. A Near Fine copy of an extremely scarce book in a Very Good + dust jacket, INSCRIBED, SIGNED, AND CONTEMPORARILY DATED BY FRANK MARSHALL DAVIS. SCARCE.

(E. Sottsass jr.)\

Leipzig, Ernst Wunderlich Verlag 1948 - 4°. 20 n.n.S. mit Illustrationen in Offset. Originalbroschur. Kinderwelt im Bilderbuch 813. - Erste Ausgabe. (s. Phantastiken. die Bauhäuslerin Lou Scheper-Berkenkamp, Berlin, Bauhaus-Archiv. 2012). - Umschlag ganz leicht fleckig. Sehr gutes Exemplar. - Selten wie alle Bücher der Künstlerin. [Attributes: First Edition]
