        Naturalist Photo Album

      N.p.: N.p., 1947. Some wear from handling, glue spots from pasting evident on some images, overall very good in screw-bound canvas covered boards.. Unique photo album. Screw-bound folio. One hundred tipped-in black and white silver gelatin prints by noted naturalist Lewis Walker. Published ephemera relating to some of the images laid in. One article in the November 1945 issue of "Natural History" is SIGNED by Walker and inscribed to friends. Photograph sizes vary; some are as large as 12 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches, some are 7 x 5 inch prints, but many are 8 x 10 inch prints; a few in unusual sizes. Mostly ornithological in nature, but also some photographs of insects, the Hawaiian mongoose, and waterfalls, many photographed nocturnally. Walker was a pioneer of nocturnal images of birds. The quality of the photographs, both day time and nocturnal, are uniformly exceptional and the album is artfully arranged. Walker published a book on owls in 1974 and was widely published in National Geographic and other nature journals.

        ALS to Well Known New Zealand Ficton Writer Lady Anderson

      London 1947 - London, 20 September 1947. Manuscript Signed Letter by the Right Honourable Montgomery of Alamein, to well known fiction writer Lady Anderson, mentioning an unpublished book by Anderson which precedes her formal writing career. 8vo. Single-leaf measuring approximately 14 x 18cm (5.5 x 7 inches). Very good condition, and accompanied by the original postally used envelope. Graciously confirming receipt of what appears to be an unpublished book by a well known female author, and perhaps the first she had written, this letter is penned and signed by Bernard Law Montgomery (1887-1976), 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, and British Army Field Marshal nicknamed "Monty" and the "Spartan General" whose illustrious military career spanned both World Wars, during which time he earned numerous honours and awards. The recipient is Barbara Anderson, Lady Anderson (1926-2013) née Barbara Lillian Romaine, an internationally recognized fiction writer from New Zealand, and later, the wife of Sir Neil Dudley Anderson, Chief of New Zealand Defence Staff. Only a few months to this letter being written, Barbara had graduated with a BSc from Otago University. She subsequently worked as a medical technologist and teacher, though her passion had always been in writing. She finally pursued her formal writing career in her sixties, publishing a volume of short stories, for the first time, in 1989. The book mentioned in this letter does not appear on common lists of her published works, and pre-dates her writing career by approximately thirty years. The letter reads as follows: "Dear Lady Anderson, I have just got back from Germany and found your book 'Lend Me Your Ears'. Thank you so very much. Yrs. ever Montgomery of Alamein" [signed]

        LADY IN THE LAKE (1947)

      MGM 1947 - Vintage original 28 x 22" (70 x 55 cm.) half sheet poster style A, USA. Robert Montgomery, Audrey Totter, Lloyd Nolan, Leon Ames, Jayne Meadows, dir: Robert Montgomery; MGM. Montgomery directed and starred in this fine adaptation of the Raymond Chandler novel. It is perhaps the one film which truly captures the original spirit of a Chandler book. Montgomery was able to direct and act by ingeniously having his character be off camera much of the time, appearing to the audience by reflection in mirrors and by characters' reactions to him, thus giving Audrey Totter (in a performance as one of the all-time femmes fatales) an opportunity to play most of her role directly to the camera. The MGM art department was a bit creative in their poster campaign highlighting the murder mystery theme and using color layout atypical of their mid-1940s efforts, though the half sheet style A does use the odd yellow background of the time. This is a scarce poster, seldom seen, with much better design than the much-more common one sheet. One of the finest in the film noir genre. Poster is folded, there is a separation at the very bottom center fold, light corner and edge wear, no pin holes. ABOUT FINE

Broadside (measures 10 by 13-1/2 inches), printed on recto. $1800.1947 Jerusalem Orthodox broadside against “the Zionists who wish to uproot the Torah,” illustrative of the conflicts among Zionists and other factions in Jerusalem just prior to the creation of the state of Israel.This broadside states that it is the scholars of Torah who are the Neturei Karta, “the protectors of the city.” “The forces which were contending over the nature of the new society were divided into three broad groupsÂ… Socialist Zionists, known as the HistadrutÂ… middle-class elements [anti-Socialist Revisionists]Â… and the Orthodox, who could not imagine a Jewish presence in the land which did not exemplify the values and practices of the religious tradition” (Encyclopaedia Judaica). These three factions came to maturity as the Zionist settlement in Palestine increased tenfold, from roughly 60,000 in 1919 to 600,000 in the 1940s. This broadside goes on to claim, “Whomever has any relationship with the Zionists-even enlisting in the Haganah-becomes a partner in actions against Judaism.” “[Orthodox elements] were dedicated to the building of an institutional power base for religious Jews, so that they could compete as equals with the other groups and provide equal opportunity in the new country for those who shared the Orthodox religious faith. This body of opinion was deeply concerned that the total temper of the Jewish community should not be secularized. They did not want to become a religious ghetto in a non-religious Jewish society, and they believed that it was their duty to bring religion even to those who opposed itÂ… The struggle between the Socialist and the middle-class elements in IsraelÂ’s society has been muted in the generation of statehood, for a mixed economy now prevails. Dame Joan Hassell is one of the most celebrated female woodblock engravers of the 20th century. In 1972 she became the first woman to be elected the Master of the Art Workers Guild and in 1987 was awarded the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth. Unlike the trade issue, this beautifully produced edition was hand printed directly from her original woodblocks.       [London] Royal Naval Scientific Service 1947 - 10-page stapled offprint. Ownership ink stamp of Gunnar Hägg and date ink stamp "Dec 1947" to first leaf. Upper staple lacking, a little minor creasing and toning. An excellent copy. Scarce early computing offprint describing ENIAC and the IBM/Harvard Mark I. Only the third of Hartree's computer publications, this offprint appeared shortly before the more well-known Cambridge University Press pamphlet Calculating Machines: Recent & Prospective Developments. The only two pieces published prior to this were an article in the journal Nature and a shorter article in the Journal of Scientific Instruments (published July 1947, the same month as the present). In addition to his contributions to ballistics and quantum theory, British mathematician Douglas Hartree (1897-1958) was also a leader in efforts to automate scientific calculations. He was "involved in the development of the digital electronic computer, which emerged from wartime attempts to automate calculation further. In 1946 Hartree's advice was sought in the application of the United States army's ENIAC (electronic numerical integrator and computer) to the production of ballistic tables" (ODNB). The present paper begins with a short history of mechanical and electrical calculating, describes the functioning of the Mark I and ENIAC, and notes some prospective developments, including the construction of the EDVAC and ACE computers and the principle of the acoustic line delay. One American observer described it as a city ‘completely flat with destruction,Â’ where even ‘the rubble did not look like much.Â’ As he presided over a ceremony at the Embassy—his home for the next five and a half years—MacArthur ordered General Eichelberger to ‘have our countryÂ’s flag unfurled, and in TokyoÂ’s sun let it wave in its full glory as a symbol of hope for the oppressed and as a harbinger of victory for the right.Â’ This moment was not broadcast throughout the world as the surrender ceremony aboard the U.S.S. Missouri had been six days earlier. Yet in hindsight, it was just as symbolic of the occupation period to follow: optimistic, thoroughly American, and unmistakably MacArthur” (PBS). Folio (11-1/2 by 16 inches), original cream cloth gilt (dancing figure); and portfolio (14 by 18 inches), original cream cloth gilt (satyrÂ’s head ), with nineteen plates, title page and index of tables, unbound as issued. $2500.Limited second edition, number 196 of only 500 copies, of this famous study of “La Villa dei Misteri” by noted Pompeian scholar Amedeo Maiuri, with 18 large matted color plates and detailed folding plan of the perished city. A splendid production, beautifully bound and illustrated.Intensive excavation of Pompeii, destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., was begun in 1924 under the direction of Amedeo Maiuri, who was in charge of excavations until 1961. Following an interruption caused by World War II, during which Maiuri sand-bagged the ruins in hopes of preventing bomb damage and pillage, work was resumed in 1951. First published in 1931, this limited edition set of commentary and plates describes the findings of that famous archeological dig—one of the first to employ a rigorously systematic and scientific approach. “They were not melancholy,” Maiuri maintained of the inhabitants, “they wanted to be seen and remembered— after deathÂ… The important thing now is not to discover new objects. What we must do now isÂ…learn the daily life of the ordinary people.” The 18 plates, printed in full colors and individually framed in gray mats, depict contiguous sections of a painted wall in the city. In addition to his well-known excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum, Maiuri also supervised work on the Greek site at Paestum, rediscovered the fabled cave of the Sibyl of Cuma, and excavated the Villa Jovis on Capri. Gilbert Debrise discovers with horror that former kapos were enjoying complete immunity in exchange for their testimonies, which had become precious since none of the accused found the courage to acknowledge his crimes. Paradoxically, he feels a sense of guilt when one evening, after a tiring day, he finds himself dancing with a German woman in a Dachau club. Debrise then wonders if he does not act like a "monster" in the eyes of his comrades who have died as martyrs in this accursed place, he who has survived and begins to enjoy life again. This disgust for himself, a survivor syndrome, is accompanied by a bitter observation that Nazism has left an indelible imprint on the hearts and minds of a majority of German and Austrian civilians. Coldrick, British chemist and lecturer with the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, together with a collection of internal publications and company pamphlets.“We must look at the parts played by certain foreign countries in [Mideast] affairsÂ… Iraq and the countries to the south have been for many years the particular province of the British, who adopted from the beginning a closed door policy towards all other foreign powers mixing in the political affairs of the area” (Petroleum Times, June 1948). This magnificent photographic archive of Iranian daily life, taken by employees of the leading British oil company near and around its refinery at Abadan, includes striking portraits of tribesmen, local people, and a number of architectural and landscape views. The Anglo-Iranian Oil Company was at the time one of the largest oil companies in the world, with its principal site of production in Iran and with secondary sources in Iraq and Kuwait. The collection includes publications connected with the companyÂ’s refinery and its related Technical Institute, where the primary photographer W.P. Coldrick was employed as a full-time lecturer in chemistry. He also served as secretary of the companyÂ’s amateur “Photographic Society.” Many images are identified and dated in pencil on the versos. Unmounted photographs somewhat curled. A fascinating collection of candid images of 1950s Iranians.

Kräftiger Druck in grauviolett und schwarz auf chamoisfarbenem Papier. - Otto Pankok begann im Alter von 20 Jahren sein Studium an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Nach Kriegsdienst im 1. Weltkrieg ließ er sich 1919 in Düsseldorf nieder und trat der Künstlergruppe Junges Rheinland bei, der auch Otto Dix angehörte. 1921 heiratete er die Journalistin Hulda Droste. 1931 begann seine Freundschaft mit den „Zigeunern" in der damaligen „wilden Siedlung" im Düsseldorfer Heinefeld, im heutigen Stadtteil Unterrath gelegen. Sinti blieben ein künstlerisches Thema, das ihn bis an sein Lebensende immer wieder fesselte, und bei denen er viel Zeit verbrachte. 1947 vergleicht Pankok in seinem Vorwort zu "Zigeuner" den heute als Porajmos bezeichneten Völkermord an Roma mit dem Holocaust und benennt das Ineinandergreifen von Internierung, Deportation und Ermordung bei beiden Opfergruppen. - In der unteren Ecke mit kleinem Wasserrand.
