Amsterdam tijdens den hongerwinter / Amsterdam During the 'Hungerwinter'

Amsterdam: Contact / De Bezige Bij, (1947). A little foxing to the front end paper, else near fine in a bright, close to near fine jacket, with a few small edge tears and a tiny spot of soiling at the spine heel. An excellent copy of a book rarely found in jacket; still uncommon at all in North America.. First Edition. Quarto. Pictures taken during the winter of 1944-1945 by leading members of the Underground Camera group, including Dutch greats Cas Oorthuys and Emmy Andriese. What emerges from this book - beyond the harrowing wartime shots of starvation and destruction - are the beginnings in photo literature of a new way of seeing the world. Forced by necessity to shoot under the most extreme conditions, the photographers are formulating a new aesthetic forged from the immediacy of circumstance. (Parr / Badger, v1, 196).

UNDER THE VOLCANO (Advance Review PROOF, the superb H. Bradley Martin copy)

New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1947. Lowry, Malcolm. UNDER THE VOLCANO. New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1947. First Edition. Publisher's original uncorrected PROOF COPY in original wrappers, the finest known example, sporting only a few tiny insignificant blemishes but otherwise surviving virtually as new. From the legendary library of H. Bradley Martin (bookplate). Of the few known surviving proofs of Lowry's great 20th century masterpiece, this is the only one we know of which hasn't been the victim of all sorts of problems, many stemming from the pale color of the wrappers which basically soil just by looking at them. UNDER THE VOLCANO is on virtually every major list of the 100 most important (or best) novels of the 20th century (Modern Library, Time, Le Monde, et cetera) and copies of the first edition which haven't been restored or repaired are rare indeed. It was adapted into film in 1984 starring Albert Finney and Jacqueline Bisset, directed by John Huston, winning several Oscar nominations. The novel had originally been accepted in London by the prestigious publishing house of Jonathan Cape which, however, demanded extensive changes. Lowry, passionate in defense of his novel's raw, unattractive, and uncompromising intensity, chose the relatively obscure New York firm of Reynal & Hitchcock to publish it exactly as it was intended, leading to smaller publishing numbers and further accounting for the rarity of the first edition. Quick plot summary: Against a background of war breaking out in Europe and the Mexican fiesta Day of Death, we are taken through one day in the life of Geoffrey Firmin, a British consul living in alcoholic disrepair and obscurity in a small southern Mexican town in 1939. The Consul's self-destructive behavior is a source of perplexity and sadness to his nomadic, idealistic half-brother, Hugh, and his ex-wife, Yvonne, who has returned with hopes of healing Geoffrey and their broken marriage. Firmin's best friend is alcohol, and lots of it, as he constantly tries to drown out the world's and his own personal problems. The former category includes the Spanish Civil War, the rise of Nazism in Germany and the associated effect it has on Mexican nationalism. The latter category mostly concerns his recent divorce from his actress wife and the nearly-as-violent inner war which her reappearance has kindled in the wreckage of his emotions. Originally written in 1940, it is still a powerful read today perhaps as evidenced by the fact it has never once been out of print in the last sixty-five years. Housed in a very attractive red quarter-morocco slipcase.. First Edition. Fine.

Lot of 77 Western Photography Guild "Physique Photographs", ca. 1947-1963

Denver, Colorado. ca. 1947-63. Near Fine. Lot of 77 4 x 5 inch original "beefcake" physique photographs by Don Whitman, founder of the Western Photography Guild. Housed in archival plastic portfolios. The lot includes selections from six different series and contains 19 doubles photographs. Though undated, the photographs were certainly taken between 1947, when the studio was founded, and 1963, when the five-digit zip code was established and incorporated into the studio's stamp that appears on the verso of each photograph. The style appears to be most accurately ca. 1950s, with gentlemen Gene Licka, Keith Lewin, Jim Dardanis, and Dick Kiefer prominently featured, and certainly dating from before the 1968 repeal of the ban on mailing nude photographs, which the WPC avoided by strategically placing modesty cloths over the mens' groins. In addition to the provocative subjects, Whitman's photographs were also unique for their use of the natural Colorado scenery, often posing subjects on rocks, trees, or against expansive vistas. The lot includes many of these natural Colorodo backdrops, as well as studio shoots. All photographs are in excellent condition and are stamped on the verso with the studio stamp, as well as series and number. Some have the model's name or series title stamped or handwritten also on the verso. Photographs are culled from series X, 1, 4, 6, 32, 35, and 37, 77, which include a wrestling series, a series featuring the use of chains, a series with jeans, and many classical poses. Two photographs are out-of-series. An amazing collection of these highly desirable photographs.

Inscribed by Vishniac on the title page, "To my good friends- DePorto with deep appreciation from the author June 1948". Near fine in a good dust jacket. A much nicer copy than usually seen. Roman Vishniac was hired in the 1930's by the Joint Distribution Committee to travel through Eastern Europe documenting people groups under assault in Germany. "These pictures," Vishniac wrote, "were made without letting the subjects know of the presence of a camera. They represent real life completely unposed. And so today they have become documents of a lost epoch of a lost people.

Numerical Inverting of Matrices of High Order

The American Mathematical Society, 1947. First edition. Rare offprint of one of von Neumann’s major papers. “The 1947 paper by John von Neumann and Herman Goldstine, ‘Numerical Inverting of Matrices of High Order’ (Bulletin of the AMS, Nov. 1947), is considered as the birth certificate of numerical analysis. Since its publication, the evolution of this domain has been enormous.” (Bultheel & Cools: The Birth of Numerical Analysis).

& “Just when modern computers were being invented (those digital, electronic, and programmable), John von Neumann and Herman Goldstine wrote a paper to illustrate the mathematical analyses that they believed would be needed to use the new machines effectively and to guide the development of still faster computers. Their foresight and the congruence of historical events made their work the first modern paper in numerical analysis. Von Neumann once remarked that to found a mathematical theory one had to prove the first theorem, which he and Goldstine did concerning the accuracy of mechanized Gaussian elimination - but their paper was about more than that. Von Neumann and Goldstine described what they surmised would be the significant questions once computers became available for computational science, and they suggested enduring ways to answer them.” (John von Neumann's Analysis of Gaussian Elimination: the Founding of Modern Numerical Analysis, Lecture at ICME, Stanford, January 2007).

& “The concluding Chapter 7 interprets the rounding error analysis. Von Neumann asked his readers to continue from his residual bound ‘several different ways’. He guided his readers by explaining the appropriate conclusion shows the computed result is exact for some perturbation of the initial data. This is the ‘backward’ interpretation which many people think von Neumann did not understand. The paper closes by evaluating the residual bound for ‘random’ matrices, and by counting arithmetic operations.
& In sum, von Neumann’s paper contains much that is unappreciated or at least unattributed to him. The contents are so familiar, it is easy to forget von Neumann is not repeating what everyone knows. He anticipated many of the developments in the field he originated, and his theorems on the accuracy of Gaussian elimination have not been encompassed in half a century. The paper is among von Neumann's many firsts in computer science. It is the first paper in modern numerical analysis, and the most recent by a person of von Neumann's genius.” (Kees Vuik, Birthday of Modern Numerical Analysis).

& Hook & Norman, Origins of Cyberspace, no. 957; Goldstine, The Computer from Pascal to von Neumann, pp.290-91; Nash, A History of Scientific Computing, p.23; DSB, XIV, p.92. Offprint from Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society, vol. 53, no. 11, pp. 1021-1099. 8vo: 241 x 152 mm. Original green printed wrappers. Provenance: With the rubber stamp of statistician, and specialist in numerical methods, Dr. Clifford J. Maloney to the front and rear wrapper. Very fine.

Both editions have had an undeniable influence on consumer wine purchases, tourism, and even travel literature and industry winemaking practice. Parker has given 69 Rhône wines a 100 score, the most for any region. On the wines of the Rhône, Parker comments; "They are extraordinary wines that transcend normal vocabulary and establish new tasting parameters" (introduction). Lettre autographe.

        Foundations of Economic Analysis

Cambridge: Harvard University Press 1947. First edition of the author's magnum opus and one of the most influential economic texts of the twentieth century. Octavo, original burgundy cloth with titles in gilt. Signed by Paul Samuelson on the title page. An excellent near fine copy with light wear to the bottom edges in the rare dust jacket, which shows some toning to the front panel and a few small chips to the crown. Housed in a custom quarter morocco clamshell box. Exceptionally rare in the original dust jacket and signed. Fifty years after it was written, "Foundations of Economic Analysis" (together with Hicks' Value and Capital) is still one of the most inspiring classics of general equilibrium economics" (Niehans, History of Economic Theory). Paul Samuelson is one of the developers of both neo-Keynesian and neoclassical economics, the latter of which still dominates mainstream economics. He was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for having written considerable parts of economic theory, and he is one of the ten Nobel Prize winning economists still signing the Economist's statement opposing the Bush tax cuts. One of Samuelson's many novel contributions was that he generalized and applied mathematical methods developed for the study of thermodynamics to the field of economics. His inspiration for doing so came, in part, from his mentor, polymath Edwin Bisdwell Wilson who was a former Yale student of the founder of chemical thermodynamics, Willard Gibbs. Samuelson, therefore, is a successful example of interdisciplinarity, and he combined these ideas in his magnum opus Foundations of Economic Analysis (1947).
