Steeple Bush

Henry Holt NY: Henry Holt, 1947. First edition. One of 751 copies signed by Frost. Title page decoration by Loren MacIver. In a review in the June 1, 1947 issue of the New York Times, Randall Jarrell singles out “Directive,” an early poem in Frost’s penultimate collection, for possessing “so much longing, tenderness, and passive sadness.” For Jarrell, the dirgeful majesty of “Directive” was a reminder of Frost’s greatness as a poet who has “written so well about the actions of ordinary men.” Very fine in cloth-backed boards with glassine wrapper and publisher’s slipcase.

Fine Structure of the Hydrogen Atom by a Microwave Method

Lancaster and New York: American Physical Society. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Fine. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of the discovery of the "Lamb shift" "Shortly after World War II, Lamb began his work to check the accuracy of the predictions of Paul Dirac as they related to the energy levels and spectral lines of hydrogen. Dirac's quantum mechanical theory predicted that the hydrogen atom had two possible energy states with equal energies. Lamb's accurate work using radiofrequency resonance techniques, reported in 1947, revealed that there was a minute difference in these energy levels. Small as it was, this Lamb shift necessitated a revision of the theory of the interaction of the electron with electromagnetic radiation. For this work Lamb was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics, which he shared with another leader of research at Columbia, Polykarp Kusch, with whom he had performed wartime research in developing microwave radar" (.Biographical Encyclopedia of Scientists). Particle Physics: One Hundred Years of Discoveries: "First measurements of the fine structure of the hydrogen atom, the Lamb shift. Nobel prize to W.E. Lamb awarded in 1955 'for his discoveries concerning the fine structure of the hydrogen spectrum.'" IN: The Physical Review, Vol 72, No 3, August 1, 1947, pp. 241-243. Lancaster, PA., and New York, NY: American Physical Society, 1947. Quarto, original wrappers. Tiny bump to outer edge, otherwise fine. Rare in wrappers.

1947. Manuscript. Very Good and scarce. Holograph Manuscript of "Serenade," first published in the periodicals ATLANTIC in November 1947 and PHOENIX QUARTERLY in 1948 and later included in Auden's 1951 collection NONES. It consists of three stanzas, each with eight lines, on the recto of an unlined 8-1/2" x 11" paper neatly penned completely in Auden's hand with a SIGNED INSCRIPTION at the bottom "To Bill/from/Wystan./June 26th 1947." According to Mendelson, Auden composed this poem in June 1947. There are several differences in punctuation between this manuscript and the printed version, but more importantly are word changes in four lines. Auden salutes the "incumbent" night in the printed version but here salutes the "threatening" night at the end of the first stanza. "The child with careful charm" is here "The careful child with charm." Auden also uses "that" for "which" in line 22 and "from" for "of" in the last line. Alas, we do not know who Bill is. Once folded in quarters, there is a visible but not disconcerting crease mark where folded as well as some minor general wrinkling. Two words in the third line are a little smudged but still readable. With an early undated typed transcription.

        River of Grass

2012. Soft Cover. Fine. Soft Cover. Number 22 of 36 copies. A stunning work by noted book artist, Dorothy Simpson Krause. From the artist's statement: "This homage to Marjory Stoneman Douglas, (1947-1997), and her seminal book, "The Everglades: River of Grass" combines my images of the Everglades with historic photographs, documents and maps. Forty miles wide and over 100 miles long this slow moving river ranges from a few inches to a few feet in depth. Only half it's original size, the Everglades has been largely destroyed to meet the demands of urban and agricultural growth. The ongoing battle for restoration of the Everglades is a moral test which hopefully we will pass." The book's exquisite images evoke the beauty and mystery of the Everglades, which are "one of the unique regions of the earth, remote, never wholly known" (Marjory Douglas). Printed on Yu Kou paper heavy,on the Oki C9650 laser printer with letterpress overlay printed on the Vandercook 4 with metallic inks. Interleaved with Yu Kou light. Envelope enclosure of Lokta Oil Paper, saddle brown, referencing a packet of documents an early settler might have carried. Native mahogany tree seedpod closure with rawhide and thread tie. Produced while Artist-in-Residence at the Jaffe Center for Book Arts, Wimberly Library, Florida Atlantic University, Spring, 2012 and published under the auspices of Minerva: The Press at Wimberly. Pictures taken during the winter of 1944-1945 by leading members of the Underground Camera group, including Dutch greats Cas Oorthuys and Emmy Andriese. What emerges from this book - beyond the harrowing wartime shots of starvation and destruction - are the beginnings in photo literature of a new way of seeing the world. UNDER THE VOLCANO (Advance Review PROOF, the superb H. Bradley Martin copy)

New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1947. Lowry, Malcolm. UNDER THE VOLCANO. New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1947. First Edition. Publisher's original uncorrected PROOF COPY in original wrappers, the finest known example, sporting only a few tiny insignificant blemishes but otherwise surviving virtually as new. From the legendary library of H. Bradley Martin (bookplate). Of the few known surviving proofs of Lowry's great 20th century masterpiece, this is the only one we know of which hasn't been the victim of all sorts of problems, many stemming from the pale color of the wrappers which basically soil just by looking at them. UNDER THE VOLCANO is on virtually every major list of the 100 most important (or best) novels of the 20th century (Modern Library, Time, Le Monde, et cetera) and copies of the first edition which haven't been restored or repaired are rare indeed. It was adapted into film in 1984 starring Albert Finney and Jacqueline Bisset, directed by John Huston, winning several Oscar nominations. The novel had originally been accepted in London by the prestigious publishing house of Jonathan Cape which, however, demanded extensive changes. Lowry, passionate in defense of his novel's raw, unattractive, and uncompromising intensity, chose the relatively obscure New York firm of Reynal & Hitchcock to publish it exactly as it was intended, leading to smaller publishing numbers and further accounting for the rarity of the first edition. Quick plot summary: Against a background of war breaking out in Europe and the Mexican fiesta Day of Death, we are taken through one day in the life of Geoffrey Firmin, a British consul living in alcoholic disrepair and obscurity in a small southern Mexican town in 1939. The Consul's self-destructive behavior is a source of perplexity and sadness to his nomadic, idealistic half-brother, Hugh, and his ex-wife, Yvonne, who has returned with hopes of healing Geoffrey and their broken marriage. Firmin's best friend is alcohol, and lots of it, as he constantly tries to drown out the world's and his own personal problems. The former category includes the Spanish Civil War, the rise of Nazism in Germany and the associated effect it has on Mexican nationalism. The latter category mostly concerns his recent divorce from his actress wife and the nearly-as-violent inner war which her reappearance has kindled in the wreckage of his emotions. Originally written in 1940, it is still a powerful read today perhaps as evidenced by the fact it has never once been out of print in the last sixty-five years. Housed in a very attractive red quarter-morocco slipcase.. First Edition. Fine.

Lot of 77 Western Photography Guild "Physique Photographs", ca. 1947-1963

Denver, Colorado. ca. 1947-63. Near Fine. Lot of 77 4 x 5 inch original "beefcake" physique photographs by Don Whitman, founder of the Western Photography Guild. Housed in archival plastic portfolios. The lot includes selections from six different series and contains 19 doubles photographs. Though undated, the photographs were certainly taken between 1947, when the studio was founded, and 1963, when the five-digit zip code was established and incorporated into the studio's stamp that appears on the verso of each photograph. The style appears to be most accurately ca. 1950s, with gentlemen Gene Licka, Keith Lewin, Jim Dardanis, and Dick Kiefer prominently featured, and certainly dating from before the 1968 repeal of the ban on mailing nude photographs, which the WPC avoided by strategically placing modesty cloths over the mens' groins. In addition to the provocative subjects, Whitman's photographs were also unique for their use of the natural Colorado scenery, often posing subjects on rocks, trees, or against expansive vistas. The lot includes many of these natural Colorodo backdrops, as well as studio shoots. All photographs are in excellent condition and are stamped on the verso with the studio stamp, as well as series and number. Some have the model's name or series title stamped or handwritten also on the verso. Photographs are culled from series X, 1, 4, 6, 32, 35, and 37, 77, which include a wrestling series, a series featuring the use of chains, a series with jeans, and many classical poses. Two photographs are out-of-series. An amazing collection of these highly desirable photographs.

        Polish Jews: A Pictorial Record

New York: Shocken Books, 1947. First edition of this classic work that Edward Steichen wrote, "among photography's finest documents of a time and place". Quarto, original black cloth. Inscribed by Vishniac on the title page, "To my good friends- DePorto with deep appreciation from the author June 1948". Near fine in a good dust jacket. A much nicer copy than usually seen. Vishniac's photography has been exhibited worldwide, for which he has been described as "one of the world's foremost photomicrographers" (McDarrah, 511). Roman Vishniac was hired in the 1930's by the Joint Distribution Committee to travel through Eastern Europe documenting people groups under assault in Germany. "These pictures," Vishniac wrote, "were made without letting the subjects know of the presence of a camera. They represent real life completely unposed. And so today they have become documents of a lost epoch of a lost people.
