      Rialto, 1947. Original French affiche poster for the 1947 French film noir, "Quai des Orfevres," directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot, based on the novel by "Legitime Defense" by Stanislas-Andre Steeman, and starring Louis Jouvet and Bernard Blier. One of Clouzot's undisputed masterpieces, a Simenon-esque story in which a guilty man's complex murder scheme is systematically deconstructed by a patient and very tenacious police inspector (Jouvet). Not only one of the classics of French noir, but important in that much of it was shot in several famous French burlesque halls that were subsequently leveled, as well as much location footage from the grittier parts of Paris circa 1947. This copy with two letters to Richard Tobin, journalist and editor of SATURDAY REVIEW, including an AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by the author and a TYPED LETTER signed in type by Olson. The holograph letter is 3 pages written from Gloucester addressed to Dick and SIGNED "Olson": "This scrabbled note-- for a bed!" Most of the @125 word letter, written in dark ink, pertains to travel plans and expresses hope of staying with Tobin. The typed letter, signed in type as Olson and also addressed to Dick from the John Winthrop House in "Cambritch," is 1-page, single-spaced, and @300 words. The purpose of the letter is to recommend a young journalist, but Olson's jagged sense of humor comes through from the first paragraph: "I've got your hat on at this moment. Why? I guess cause I just got in. It has a hole in the front and a hole in the back cause as you know it was too small and to pull it down over my longer and longer hair (I'm cheating the barber for a hell of a good reason - no gold) forace has been necessary thus the holes and thus it looks like a hat that did come out of the Flood. But thanks anyhow. I've liked it." Near the top of the letter is a neat hole representing the hole in the hat.

A Very Good + copy of the first US edition, first printing (fading to the board extremities and to the spine, modest shelf wear, spine ends pushed, fading to the topstain) in a Very Good + George Salter-designed dust jacket (spine moderately sunned, moderate rubbing and small chipping to the spine head, light wear to the spine tail and jacket edges, typical toning to the panels and to the flap extremities), SIGNED BY ELIAS CANETTI on the half-title and SIGNED BY GEORGE SALTER on the dust jacket's front flap. First published as Die Blendung ("The Blinding") in 1935 and later banned in Nazi Germany, the book was translated to English in 1946 by C. V. Wedgwood then published in the UK as "Auto-Da-Fe" and in the US as "The Tower of Babel". As Canetti did not become widely-known until his "Crowds and Power" was published in 1960, both the Knopf and the Cape first editions are rather scarce. (Canetti intended the novel to be the first installment in a eight-volume series. As he did not write the rest of the planned installments, "The Tower of Babel" is not only his debut novel, but also is the only novel he ever published. Both "Crowds and Power", a work of nonfiction, and "The Tower of Babel" explore how an individual is affected by his or her participation in a group.) Canetti won the 1981 Nobel Prize in Literature "for writings marked by a broad outlook, a wealth of ideas and artistic power", and "The Tower of Babel" is, in our estimation, his best-known work. Of this novel, Salman Rushdie stated: " one is spared. Professor and furniture salesman, doctor, housekeeper, and thief all get it in the neck. The remorseless quality of the comedy builds one of the most terrifying literary worlds of the century". As noted above, George Salter designed the book's striking dust jacket and signed this nice example of it at the bottom of the front flap. Born Georg Salter in Germany (1897), Salter was naturally left-handed and, after receiving a grade of only "satisfactory" in handwriting, taught himself to write and to draw with his right hand. A set designer by trade who also worked as a freelance book and dust jacket designer, Salter emigrated to the United States in 1934 and began to design dust jackets for US Publishers, ultimately designing hundreds of dust jackets and numerous magazine covers. Salter created some of the most mesmerizing dust jackets ever to grace a book, such as those for the US editions of Faulkner's "Absalom, Absalom" and "The Hamlet", Kafka's "The Trial", George Mandel's "Flee the Angry Strangers", Graham Greene's "This Gun for Hire", Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged", Ignazio Silone's "Bread and Wine", William Styron's "Lie Down in Darkness", and, of course, Canetti's "The Tower of Babel". Each of his dust jackets evoked the book's content and without a doubt helped increase the sales of the books which wore his works. Signed copies of Canetti's books are scarce, signed copies of any English translation of his books are scarcer still, and signed copies of any English translation of this title, the work for which he is best known, are extraordinarily so. Furthermore, not only are signed copies of Canetti's works scarce, but signed copies of George Salter's wonderful dust jackets are real hen's teeth in the market. Coming from the Estate of decorated Naval Officer and famed Actor Douglas Fairbank's and carrying his elegant bookplate to the front pastedown, this book's Provenance only adds to the book's rarity and desirability. A Very Good + copy of an uncommon book, SIGNED BY ELIAS CANETTI, with the DUST JACKET SIGNED BY GEORGE SALTER, and having a wonderful Provenance. RARE INDEED.

        A Collection of B. Traven Letters to Ruth Ford with Related Material Including Three Books

      A magnificent archive consisting of 21 Typed Letters Initialed (as either "H." or "H.C.") from the elusive and fiercely private B. Traven, nearly all of the letters to the actress Ruth Ford, for whom he professes great love in many of the letters. Accompanied by three books, including a first American edition of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and assorted clippings. All of the letters Initialed by Traven as "H.C" or "H." as Hal Croves. Croves, one of several aliases used by Traven, was invented by the author in order to present himself as Traven's literary agent, and used mostly in his interaction with legendary film director John Huston throughout the development and filming of Traven's novel The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. The letters start in early 1947 and end in 1961, but the majority of them were written during 1947 and correspond with the production of the classic film. Many include references to day-to-day events of the film's production. These are dense letters, nearly all being single space typed. The letters average more than 500 words each, and one letter is over 2000 words. All of the letters have folds from mailing but are otherwise fine with about half of them accompanied by the original postmarked envelopes. Further details available upon request. .

Portrait frontispiece. Slightly rubbed, a little bubbled on the upper board, differential browning to the endpapers, marginal toning, a very good copy. First edition in English, published in French as Louis Armstrong. Le Roi du Jazz, in Paris in the same year. This copy signed by Armstrong beneath the portrait. Goffin was a Belgian lawyer, poet and author, a Stormy Petrel of the Nazi invasion, and who fled to the USA in 1939. In 1932 he had published Aux Frontières du Jazz., one of the earliest serious analyses of the jazz, and contributed "The Best Negro Jazz Orchestra," translated by Beckett, to Nancy Cunard's Negro anthology. In exile he supported himself by his writings, including a number of novels on the Nazi occupation of Belgium - La Colombe de la Gestapo and Passeports pour l'Audelà - and lectures, in 1942 collaborating with Leonard Feather to teach what is considered the first course ever on jazz history and analysis, held at the New School for Social Research in New York City. Goffin and Armstrong were close friends, and although Goffin is credited as the author, Armstrong's involvement in the book went far beyond acting as the co-operative subject. The 1999 publication of the Goffin Notebooks, part of the Louis Armstrong In His Own Words collection, showed that Satchmo was paying Goffin to act as his amanuensis, much of the material being drawn from his won manuscript autobiography covering his life from 1918-31. Having allowed his 1936 "autobiography" Swing that Music to be heavily ghosted, he decided to set the record straight.

First edition, presentation copy to his former pupil Gerard Debreu, inscribed by the author at the head of the first title, and with Debreu's ownership inscriptions to each front free endpaper. An outstanding presentation between two Nobel economics laureates: Maurice Allais (1911-2010), 1988 winner for his pioneering contributions to the theory of markets and efficient utilization of resources, to Debreu (1921-2004), 1983 winner for having incorporated new analytical methods into economic theory and for his rigorous reformulation of general equilibrium theory, much of which work elaborated on Allais's. The two men were working together in the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris at the time of publication, where Allais was director of a research unit and Debreu was an assistant. Economie et Intérêt is Allais's second major publication, a massive work on capital and interest which has formed the basis for the so-called "golden rule of accumulation". This states that to maximise real income, the optimum rate of interest should equal the growth rate of the economy. Allais did not publish in English until late in his career and as a result was slow to receive the international recognition that was his due: Debreu beat his former teacher to the Nobel prize in 1983 after he became an American citizen.

La Fontaine de Vaucluse, MCMXLVII (Paris, 1947) With an original etching by Picasso (Bloch 370), translated in French by Louis Aragon. One of 100 copies on Arches wove of a total edition of 110. Each copy is inscribed with a different handwritten proverb by Louis Aragon, in lieu of his signature, and is numbered in ink by Aragon. This book includes five sonnets from the Canzoniere conceived and written by Francesco Petrarca after the death of his beloved Laura on 1348. Picasso's etching for the book is a beautiful oval face surrounded by flowing hair, representing the idealized portrait of Laura, but it was the homage of Louis Aragon to Elsa Triolet, a Russian he met in 1928 after a suicide attempt, and who changed his life. In the dedicatory epigraph Aragon wrote: "They said Laura was somebody Else" the printing of the capital letter E make a possible equation between Laura and Else, or Laura and Elsa. Ref: Cramer 47, Bloch 370, Bloch books 43.inscribed : a short note written by the author or a previous owner in the beginning of a book, generally accompanied by a signature.

      Macmillan, New York 1947 - Michener's first book and winner of the Pulitzer Prize. This copy with the typical browning to the paper though not as bad as usually found. The endpapers and pastedowns at front and rear have some foxing that does not enter the text. The dustwrapper has the $3.00 price horizontally at the bottom of the front flap and is quite bright with just a little edgewear at the corners and spine tips and no tears, chips, or creases of any significance. You are not likely to find a better copy, and anyone who tries to sell you a Fine/Fine copy should be court-martialed.         A Streetcar Named Desire

      (NY): New Directions, (1947). First edition. This is Williams's most famous play, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama the year it was published. Legend has it that the audience applauded for half an hour after the debut performance ended. Williams also wrote the screenplay for the 1951 film, which garnered fame equal to (and perhaps surpassing) that of the original play with defining performances by Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh. However, many of the more sensitive aspects of the play, such as Blanche's rape and references to homosexuality, were altered or omitted in order to comply with the film industry's censorship codes. A fine copy in printed boards with a tiny nick at the top of the spine and some light rubbing. There is no fading to the spine of the book. The dust wrapper is slightly faded on the spine and has two short, closed tears, else a fine example of a book that is notoriously difficult to find in such a state.

      New York: Macmillan, 1947. First Edition. cloth. Good copy only, but a great, early inscription. Michener's first book and winner of the Pulitzer Prize. This copy with a very early INSCRIPTION dated 27 May 1947 SIGNED by the author: "Dear Jim,/The first serious writing I/did came your way. This one/had a better fortune, thanks to the/passing of time and some millions of/acres of the Pacific. It's been a treat knowing you./Jim Michener." We can only speculate who Jim was, but obviously he was of some importance to Michener very early in his career. The brittleness of the cheap paper, found in every copy we have seen, is much in evidence with a very short tear at the top margin running through nearly every page of the book. The covers also have short tears near the spine at the top and bottom. The upper front corner is bumped, and a darker shade at the very head of the spine indicates that a dustwrapper was present on this book for quite some time. All that is left is the rear flap which is laid in. Housed in a handsome and recent navy blue half morocco clamshell box.
