        A Streetcar Named Desire

New York: New Directions, 1947. First edition. Fine/Fine. An exceptional copy of this theater and film highspot. A Fine copy in like dust jacket. Book with light dings to the crown and top corners, otherwise bright and appearing unread. In a sharp, unfaded dust jacket with minor browing at the top edge of the flaps, otherwise in exceptional condition. Housed in a custom clamshell case. Tennessee Williams' 1947 masterpiece, a Pulitzer Prize winning work that remains one of the great plays of the American theater. A Streetcar Named Desire follows Blanche DuBois as she moves to New Orleans to live with her sister, Stella, and Stella's husband Stanley. Like many of Williams' plays, some of the characters are thought to be inspired by members of Williams' own family. A Streetcar Named Desire originally premiered on Broadway on December 3rd 1949, starring Marlon Brando and Jessica Tandy and directed by Eliza Kazan. The London production involved such theatrical luminaries as Vivian Leigh and Laurence Olivier. Of course, the play would be adapted in a classic film version in 1951, which would win four Academy Awards including Best Actress, and was chosen as the Library of Congress as 'culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.' "But Mr. Williams is entitled to his own independence. For he has not forgotten that human beings are the basic subject of art. Out of poetic imagination and ordinary compassion he has spun a poignant and luminous story." (Contemporary New York Times review) Fine in Fine dust jacket. Fine in Fine dust jacket.

Sometimes critics claim membership for him in "The Movement," a postwar trend in English poetry, that might best be defined as anti-Modernist, anti-Romantic, dedicated to claity of thought and feeling and a return to the main lines of English verse."       New York: Forward Association(1947). Oblong 4to; 575 pages; First edition. Original Publisher's Cloth. Oblong 4to. 575, [7] pages. illus. 20 x 27 cm. In Yiddish and English throughout. A defining work on the lost Jewish communities of Europe. Others have come out in the last 2 decades, but this was the first (many, though by no means all, photos are by Vishniak) . Documenting Jewish life in Eastern Europe with over 600 photos (and text in English and Yiddish) , this work was an early post-war portrayal of these communities within the obvious context that they were gone forever, some with almost no trace of their thousand year histories remaining. Abramovitch himself was a refugee from this world--he was a leader of the Mensheviks in exile who worked at the Jewish Daily Forward and was also active in the Bund. Published as a memorial to these extinct communities, the book is bound in attractive heavy red linen with gilt spine and cover lettering in English and Yiddish, with a paper label (with a woodcut design) on the front. Bit of discoloration to covers, faint shadow from spine label, otherwise Very good condition. Excellent copy. (HOLO2-75-11A)

Rare anthology of Russian children's verse published by this publishing house of the Russian "displaced persons" (DP) camp Schleissheim, in the American occupied zone of Germany. Both the editor of the book, A. Kudriavtseva, and the illustrator, Robert Shlykevich, were likely displaced persons (nothing is known about them). The book consists of poems by a range of Russian authors, including Agniia Barto, who went on to win the Stalin Prize in 1949 for her work. Others represented in the book include: the nineteenth-century poet K. A. Peterson; Korney Chukovsky, a popular children's writer; and Sasha Chernyi, a Silver Age poet, children's author, and satirist, who emigrated after the Russian Revolution. Interestingly, in some instances the poems vary slightly from other versions of the well-known verse. For example, in Barto's "Snegir'" (1939) the first line is changed from "on the Arbat" (the famous boulevard in Moscow) to the more generic "on the prospect". The DP publisher Zlatoust was founded in 1946 and had anti-communist leanings; it published political works as well as children's literature, translations, high liter- ature and more popular books such as detective novels. Rare, with no copies in KVK, OCLC; not at the Russian State or National Library.

        The Everglades

New York: Rinehart & Co., (1947). First Edition. Very good+ in green cloth covered boards with a gilt on dark green title block on the spine with very light wear and rubbing to the cloth at the head and heel of the spine. This volume is otherwise in near fine condition with the hinges, joints and binding all tight, strong and clean. In a very good unclipped dust jacket with narrow 1/3" deep chips at the front corners of the spine area, small chips from the fore corners of the panels over the tips of the boards and light rubbing and wear to the ends of the spine area. Signed and very warmly inscribed by the author and dated in the year of publication on the fly title page. This copy is accompanied with a long, very complimentary newspaper article about the author from the St. Petersburg Times dated June 5, 1985. The 33rd volume in the Rivers of America series with illustrations by Robert Fink. Although part of the Rivers of American series this is one of the most important titles in Florida's environmental heritage. 406 pages including an index. It is interesting that this copy contains the two typographical errors on pages 26 and and 346 which have been corrected by the author in her own hand. This is typical as the author vowed in an article discussing the upcoming publication of her book that she would make these corrections on each and every copy presented to her for signature. Carol Fitzgerald in her outstanding bibliography of The Rivers of America series states that there were 7,500 copies of the first edition printed and sold. (Fitzgerald, p169)

The first six parts were printed on rationed paper by the Broadwater Press Ltd., of Welwyn Garden City; the other three parts... were printed by Messrs W.S. Cowell Ltd., of Ipswich". The second volume appeared under the imprint of The Dropmore Press, a venture of the newspaper proprietor Viscount Kemsley of Dropmore.
