Collection of seventeen (17) photographs showing John Minihan with friends, fellow photographers like Andre Kertesz or Karsh and with some of the musicians like Christy Moore); or in Athy as a photographer in action.

. Original b/w photograph on archival paper. Different formats. From the library of irish photographer John Minihan. Most of them titled by John Minihan verso. With John's copyright-stamp verso.. John Minihan is an Irish photographer, born in Dublin in 1946 and raised in Athy, County Kildare. At the age of 12 he was brought to live in London, and went on to become an apprentice photographer with the Daily Mail. At the age of 15 he won the Evening Standard amateur photography competition. At 21 he became the youngest staff photographer for the Evening Standard. For thirty years he remained in London, returning every year to his hometown of Athy to record the people and their daily lives. The work of Minihan in Athy makes up a large part of his canon. Minihan began taking photos in Athy when he was 16. The photos are an attempt to document the lives of the ordinary people of the town in their day to day business and also in times of joy and sadness, notably during the wake of a woman called Katy Tyrrell. In between documenting Athy on visits home, Minihan continued his career on Fleet Street, which included the iconic snap of the 19-year-old Lady Diana Spencer in the garden of the nursery at which she worked, the morning sun to her back, her legs in silhouette through her skirt. Diana had just been announced as the Prince of Wales's love interest and photographers raced to take her photo, Minihan having the fortune to turn up first. Over the years Minihan developed a close relationship with many writers and his photographs of Samuel Beckett show a particular affinity between the two men. Minihans photos of Beckett are some of his best known, one in particular is described as one of the greatest photos of the twentieth century. William S. Burroughs once referred to Minihan as "a painless photographer". Minihan is perhaps best known for his photographs of Samuel Beckett. Minihan first expressed a desire to photograph Beckett in 1969, following Becketts winning of the Nobel Prize for literature, having noticed that all the available photos of Beckett were of a poor quality; 'We were running a story but discovered there were only two very vague images of Beckett taken many years before. It was like he didn't exist - that was the moment I decided I wanted to meet this man and take his photograph.' Minihan first encountered Beckett in London in 1980, while Beckett was working on a production of one of his own plays, Endgame. Minihan met Beckett in the Hyde Park hotel and showed him some of his photos of Athy to break the ice. The two met on a number of occasions over the next few years, but it was not until 1985 that they met in Paris. They arranged to meet in the restaurant of the Hotel PLM, a regular haunt of Beckett. At ten to five, with the light fading, Minihan took the photo that would go on to be called by some as the photograph of the twentieth century. John Calder credited Minihan with capturing, 'the introspective, infinitely sad gaze of a man looking into the abyss of the world's woes'. Among his numerous photographic publications are Photographs: Samuel Beckett (1995); Shadows from the Pale, Portrait of an Irish Town (1996); and An Unweaving of Rainbows, Images of Irish Writers, 1996. He is currently a freelance photographer specialising in 'the arts'. His book of photographs of Samuel Beckett was published in 1995. His photographs of Athy have been exhibited throughout the world. He was given the freedom of Athy in 1990. Minihan currently lives and works in West Cork. Minihan's many exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world include the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, 1984; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris 1986; the National Portrait Gallery, London 1987/8 and the October Gallery, London 1990 as well as the Guinness Hop Store, Dublin 1991.         An Archive of Treatment Scripts for an unproduced film The Merry, Merry Maidens (Five treatment scripts for an unproduced film)

David O. Selznick Productions, Los Angeles, CA 1946 - Five treatment scripts from various dates for an unproduced film at Selznick Studios. Including a treatment by a young Budd Schulberg, one of his earliest efforts in Hollywood. The story centers around the lives of several women on the home front during World War I, following their lives through to the post-war period, and did not see production in this form--though it predicted several similar World War II pictures with the same theme made by Selznick International during World War II, such as "I'll Be Seeing You" (1944) and "Since You Went Away" (1944). Notable too for having many of the same themes that would influence Schulberg's first novel, "What Makes Sammy Run?" in 1941.All scripts in pale blue studio wrappers, noted variously as "Treatment," "Treatment Outline," "General Sequence," or "Tentative Outline" on the front wrapper, dated between October 15, 1937 and February 11, 1946, with credits for different screenwriters on each draft: Schulberg, McCall, Jr., Sherman, Leman, Levien and Meyer. Mimeograph or carbon typescripts on onionskin stock. All scripts' pages Near Fine, wrappers Near Fine, bound with three silver brads.Full collation available on request. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Leclerq 1946; Medina 1210; Palau 325995-325996; Sabin 11036 (2nd work only). Two beautiful colonial imprints from Lima, Peru, bound together in one volume, containing interesting accounts of two synods held in Santiago, the capital of Chile, in 1688 and 1763. The Synod of 1688 was organized by the Bishop of Santiago, Don Bernardo Carrasco y Saavedra, and that of 1763 by Bishop Dr Don Manuel de Alday y Aspee. The description of the Synod of 1688 was first printed in Lima in 1690. That of 1763 is printed here for the first time and the two works were apparently designed for publication together, though they name different printing offices (they are often found bound together). The accounts give detailed information on both ecclesiastical matters and daily life in colonial Chile, including the text of the constitution outlining the rules of the Catholic Church. The accounts also describe a variety of cultural events such as dances, bullfights and games. With a manuscript note by the notary Nicolas Herrera on the first half-title. With the first leaf of the first work nearly detached from the book block and attached to the pastedown, but otherwise in very good condition, with only some marginal water stains on the first few leaves and four leaves somewhat browned. The parchment cover appears to have been taken from an older book. The parchment is wrinkled and shows various holes and folds from its use for the older binding. Accounts of synods, containing information on the church and daily life in colonial Chile in the 17th and 18th century.

        Documents d'ethnographie navale (series-title)

Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1946-, 1948. Six fascicles, with in total nine folding plates, seven photographic reproductions, and many illustrations (some in colour); the five studies in their original light blue printed wrappers, the introductory fascicle in the original dusky pink printed wrapper; some very light foxing to the wrappers, but all very good. A lovely set of these important works of naval architecture, forming a series on boat construction around the world. The series was planned as a supplement (in many ways a successor) to the well-known work by Admiral François-Edmond Paris, Souvenirs de Marine Conservés, ou Collection de Plans de Navires et de Bateaux de tous les Pays, first published in 1877. The first fascicle includes an index to Paris' main work, and reprints his five plates on the Bateaux de Cochinchine. Each of the fascicles gives a detailed account of boat-building techniques, with titles Les Jonques des Chinois du Siam, Pirogues et ca-vom de l'ouest Cochinchinois, Les Barques de Mer de Rachgia, La Machoua de Versova and Les Barques du moyen Niger. It was an ambitious project, planned under the direction of the Centre de Recherche Culturelle de la Route des Indes in Djibouti, and the series was also to have encompassed parts on "ethnographie terrestre" and "archéologie terrestre". However when the Parisian publisher Gauthier-Villars closed, the project stalled. These five initial fascicles, together with the sixth introductory part, appear to have been all that were published.

        HOLIDAY IN MEXICO (1946)

MGM 1946 - Vintage original 41 x 81" (102 x 202 cm.) three sheet poster style A, USA. Jane Powell, Ilona Massey, Walter Pidgeon, Jose Iturbi, dir: George Sidney; MGM. Advertised as a musical romance in carnival Technicolor, this poster is a testament to that statement with its vivid rainbow motif. Posters for MGM's 1940s musicals were lively, and this one has the added rarity of the eccentric caricature art by Jacques Kapralik. MGM often used his charming cut-out collage art for "Lion's Roar" magazine covers and full page inserts, but very seldom on posters -- making this large format gem a rarity. Kapralik was ingenious in not only capturing the stars' personalities, but would always include elements of the story within the art. The movie was fun and colorful and short on plot. Producer Joe Pasternak recycled the formula which had worked so well for Deanna Durbin at Universal for new teen soprano star Jane Powell, added Technicolor and snappy direction from George Sidney, and had a hit. Not only was this a film in a long series of musicals which promoted U.S. ally relations with South America, but a young Fidel Castro appears as an extra. On linen, with normal professional conservation to fold-lines, NEAR FINE.

Marjorie is at the movie house. And Mead Lux Louis is taking me on back down across the country to a place I've been before. I'm listening to some of the best Boogie beating I ever heard before. Really ace high. I only wish I had a player that would play a dozen of Mead Lux's pieces without me ever leaving to jump up and change every record. Mead's hand walks and talks on that keyboard. His boogie has hit me harder than any I've heard so far. If somebody can beat him I've just not heard them. You got a good studio tone in your records here. Only four songs, though. I would like an even dozen. He's as good at Boogie as the gospel. Keye are at $pirituals. He's the top, the tar roof, the brush arbor, the cedar grove k

Abeceda Duseviho Prazdna (Alphabet of Spiritual Emptiness)

Prague: Nakadatelsvi Za\' Druha a.s, 1946. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Soft cover. Near Fine/Very Good. This is a scarce first edition, first printing of the critically acclaimed photobook, Abeceda Duseviho Prazdna (Alphabet of Spiritual Emptiness) published by Nak/adatelsvi Za\' Druha a.s., Prague, in 1946. Abeceda is a documentary record of forced German labor camps in Breslau during 1941-1943 that Vince Aletti in the photobook reference work, The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century, calls a Czech artist\'s response to the physical and psychic devastation of World War ll. He also writes, The subject of his book is the walking wounded - men forced to work for the conquering army. The dark, impressionistic look of Tmej\'s photographs is the result of working indoors with a concealed camera and only the dimmest of available light. The book itself, a small paperback made with pulpy newsprint stock, has an abject quality contradicted only by the gorgeously tactile gravure prints. Published a year after Germany\\\'s collapse and their author\'s release, Tmej\'s photos retained their aura of furtiveness and despair at the same time as they were transformed into documents of resistance and survival. An exceptional account of the book appears on the 5B4 website, Unmarried Czech workers will be used as a group in the most remote parts of the Reich and will thereby be prevented from starting families in the territory of the protectorate. This was the decree under which, in the autumn of 1942, Zdenek Tmej was ordered to the town of Breslau to serve in a forced labor camp. Tmej, a 22-year-old aspiring photographer, brought along a Contax and a Rolliflex camera intending to bear witness to the conditions and events that transpired in a Nazi-run forced labor camp and somehow he would was allowed to keep his cameras and photograph. His job in the Reich was to work at the train station unloading the mail trains and he even took this as an opportunity to order an enlarger and darkroom equipment as well as a 4 x 5 camera to be sent from Prague. He sold prints to keep himself in film flashbulbs and photographic paper. The resulting photographs and eventual book published in 1946 called Abeceda Dusevniho Prazdna - Alphabet of Spiritual Emptiness, serve as an unrivaled insider\'s account of what it was like to live under the conditions of a Nazi forced labor camp. Measuring approximately 9.5 inches x 8.5 inches and containing 45 stunning gravure prints, the book is bound in cardboard type flexible paper wraps with a photographically illustrated dust jacket. The condition of the book is Near FINE+ with some very minor wear and soiling to the fragile covers and a few random marks to the page edges. The original dust jacket is in Very Good+ condition with some foxing to the rear and inside of the dust jacket. The edges of the dust jacket have been professionally restored. Overall, this is an exceptionally well preserved copy of an extremely scarce photobook that is notoriously fragile and almost impossible to find in this condition. Cited in all three reference works on photobooks: The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century and The Open Book by Andrew Roth and Parr and Badgers, The Photobook: A History.

Untitled [The Adventure of the Balloons in Upside Down Land]

. NA. Fine. Untitled collection of nine original watercolors that tell the story of juvenile balloons sold at a carnival and released into the air, where they find their way into "Upside Down Land". N.d., circa 1946, or in the immediate aftermath of World War Two. The order of the pictures telling the story -- there is no text -- is subject to debate, and one can not be certain that these illustrations represent the fully intended story, whether or not it was ever fully realized by the artist and storyteller. In any case, the balloons lose themselves with the manifold temptations of a candy shop. When outdoors, they are attacked by unsavory "balloon" monsters who puncture one of the balloons, who is then administered to by a balloon doctor who patches the hole. The balloons fly off rejoicing, and they dance a circle in the sky, Whether or not a complete suite of illustrations, there can be no denying the cleverness of the basic premise and the charm and skill by which the illustrations were executed. Not only is no published version of this story known, but also, there is no known story in which the concept of an "Upside Down Land" was used. An imaginary land is a commonplace in juvenile fiction, of course, but the ingeniousness of the Upside Down idea created here is that it allows for the illustrations to be viewed with equal appropriateness from top or from the bottom, and indeed, what is the top or bottom of the page is unanswerable, at least in six of the illustrations. The illustrations also capture a mid-twentieth century milieu superbly well. Nothing is known of the artist other than the name signed in one place, which is also not completely clear but appears to be Alberin. The watercolors are not all the same size but are generally about 27 by 20 cm.

        GILDA (1946)

USA 1946 - Vintage original 12 ¼ x 18 ¼" (31 x 46 cm.) campaign book, 32 pp. plus 16-page advertising section, USA. Rita Hayworth, Glenn Ford, George Macready, Joseph Calleia, dir: Charles Vidor; Columbia. One of the quintessential film noir titles, with star Rita Hayworth becoming film history's iconic "femme fatale". The cover and back of the book features one of the most famous publicity shots of all time, utilized fully and in part for scores of publicity campaigns for the film and the star. Hayworth is featured in what is likely her most famous costume -- a gown designed by Jean Louis. In the film she performs the musical number "Put the Blame on Mame" while wearing this gown. To this day Hayworth's performance is most appealing not only because of her sex appeal, but because of her pathos and vulnerability. The campaign book is lavish as Columbia was keen on promoting their most popular female star. It opens up to a gatefold featuring various stills of Hayworth in the famous costume and an array of movie magazine covers, articles and ads she appeared in to promote the film. Featured is a parade of gowns inspired by the Jean Louis fashions, radio promos, lobby displays including special cut out pieces, records, sheet music, articles -- including one on the screen's "meanies" (actresses who made good playing bad characters), promos and posters. There is also the separate 16-page advertising booklet. No cuts, folded (as issued), there is some wear to left border, NEAR FINE.
